“Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.”

Benjamin Franklin In life, we must always strive to improve ourselves -- each and everyday. We must work on our personal relationships with colleagues, with family, and with everyone we encounter. In manufacturing, constant improvement isn’t just something that we desire to do. Everyone of our readers, most of whom are directly involved in this great industry that formed the basis of our great United States, know that continual improvement is the difference between survival and, in essence, finding a new career. According to tradingeconomics.com, the United States has one of the most diversified and most technologically advanced economies in the world. Manufacturing, mining, and construction constitute 17 percent of the output. Agriculture accounts for only 1.5 percent of the GDP, yet due to use of advance technologies, the United States is a net exporter of food. Manufacturing will grow faster than the overall U.S. economy, according to MAPI. It expects manufacturing production to increase 3.2% in 2014 and 4.0% in 2015. The fastest growth in the manufacturing sector will be among high-tech companies, said MAPI. High-tech manufacturing production, which accounts for about 5% of all manufacturing, is expected to grow 6.8% in 2014 and 7.2% in 2015. Closer to home, I hope that you will read about 2 very exciting small manufacturing companies in this issue. Exact Tool Grinding was successfully grinding tools using manual equipment. When they made the bold decision to purchase their first CNC grinder, and it is a very bold decision for a small family owned business, they were astounded by how their business experienced immediate growth. Another company called Push Industries was founded by a young couple, Darren and Christina, who built a business designing and building products for the mountain bike suspension industry. After years of outsourcing manufacturing, they made a bold decision to bring manufacturing in-house. Though neither had machining backgrounds, they quickly embraced technology (in both machines and software) that now allows them to increase their new product introductions by 4 fold. It is just these kinds of individuals, whether they are doing it in their own businesses, or they are working for a company, all who embrace new technologies, that help US manufacturing to continue to drive our economy. I think the message is clear. What telling words come from Benjamin Franklin, born in the 18th century, when he said, “Improvement, achievement and success have no meaning without continual growth and progress.” Let us all embrace this. Until next issue, I wish you the best and God Bless Our Troops! May many of our new innovations help to protect those who protect us!

Boeing to improve 777, studies options for midsized jet Boeing Co pledged to improve the efficiency and seating capacity of its 777 to shore up production of its most profitable airliner before it switches to a newer model. The “mini-jumbo” is getting new engines and wings from 2020, but in the meantime Boeing needs to boost sales of the existing version to avoid having to cut production, which would undermine a key

source of cash.

Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing at the planemaker division, said that from the third quarter of 2016, the 777 would be delivered with a 2 percent gain in fuel efficiency thanks mainly to an aerodynamic facelift. Additionally, Boeing will make room for 14 extra seats. “This combination of improvement in fuel efficiency and more seats will yield about a 5 percent A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

20 • March / April 2015

improvement in efficiency per seat,” he told the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading (Istat) conference in Arizona. Participants said the decision to spruce up the existing model is designed to allay speculation that Boeing may have to cut production and aims to underpin the value investors place on 777s in the resale market, which affects prices of new planes. Boeing Chief Executive Officer Jim McNerney said last month it would have to capture 40 to 60 orders a year to maintain production at a record 8.3 aircraft a month. Europe’s Airbus AIR.PA was forced last month to announce a 40 percent cut in production of the smaller A330, after failing to win enough orders to secure a smooth transition to a newer model that is due to enter service in 2017. Tinseth said Boeing was confident it could “work through a successful transition” for the 777. But in an interview, Airbus sales chief John Leahy responded that Boeing would struggle to add 14 seats to the 365-seater and predicted it would have to cut production by half. Tinseth meanwhile gave a glimpse of Boeing studies for mid-market product between its narrow-body and widebody jets. There has been speculation about plans to replace the 757, a jet popular with U.S. carriers that seats up to 240 people on transcontinental routes or across the Atlantic. Airbus has been encroaching into a traditional Boeing niche with its fast-selling A321neo. Tinseth said Boeing was looking beyond a pure replacement for the 757 and that customers had expressed interest in a jet bigger than a 757 and with 20 percent more range.

Lockheed Martin proposes building ISS cargo ship for NASA Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. wants in on NASA’s multi-billion dollar contracts for delivering food, science experiments and supplies to the International Space Station.

And it wants to use that business as a stepping stone for deeper human space exploration. The Jefferson County-based aerospace company proposed to develop a new Jupiter spacecraft adapted from designs of interplanetary space probes the company has built for NASA, and a new cargo-carrying module it’s calling the “Exoliner” to go with it. The Jupiter craft would stay in orbit after delivering cargo to the ISS. There, it would connect future Exoliner containers launched to the ISS. The solar-powered Jupiter unit — housing the power, avionics and computer systems — could also launch small satellites for NASA or private companies, or be outfitted with instruments to conduct Earth observation for science in between handling ISS cargo deliveries. It’s a different way of looking at the cargo-delivery capabilities NASA wants, but one based on reliable technologies. If it ultimately wins the contract, it would be worth billions to the Jefferson County based company and cement Lockheed’s place as the nation’s premier aerospace contractor.

NASA’s ISS resupply work is being bid competitively to start launches ferrying supplies into orbit as early as 2017 and continue to 2024. NASA estimates $1 billion to $1.4 billion in annual spending for the project. LMSS says it could have its Jupiter system ready for flights as early as 2018. The company did not estimate what its Jupiter system proposal would cost. SpaceX and Orbital ATK currently hold NASA contracts worth more than $3.5 billion taking supplies to the ISS. NASA opened the bid process for its Commercial Resupply-2 contracts in December. It’s expected to announced winners of the contracts this June.

Sierra Nevada Corp. Space Systems has said it will bid, proposing to use its experimental Dream Chaser space plane to take cargo into orbit and handle return deliveries by landing on a runway. Boeing Co., already a winner of a $4.2 billion NASA contract to start flying astronauts to the ISS in 2018, has said it’s bidding as well, using a version of its CST-100 capsule modified for cargo. Lockheed Martin Space Systems (LMSS) has a long history with NASA, handling many interplanetary scientific missions and satellite-building projects for the space agency. Its cargo re-supply bid involves a spacecraft derived from designs of the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission probe currently

analyzing Mars’ atmosphere— a NASA project built by LMSS and led by University of Colorado-Boulder researchers— and NASA’s Juno spacecraft headed to Jupiter. LMSS named its cargo delivery system Jupiter after the locomotive engine that first demonstrated the completion of the first railroad crossing of the United States. LMSS’ Jupiter spacecraft and its later cargo containers headed for the ISS would launch aboard an Atlas V rocket made by Centennial-based United Launch Alliance. LMSS says Jupiter’s valuable avionics, power and other features only have to be launched one time to handle several cargo delivery missions, it’ll prove more capable and cost effective for NASA than proposals that have to rebuild such systems every time they launch. The Jupiter craft would be refuelable and serviceable in orbit — like the ISS itself and the Hubble space telescope is — and that will keep long-term costs down, Crocker said. “If you just do things smart, you don’t have to be expensive,” he said. The robotic arm used by Jupiter will be produced by MDA, the Canadian maker of the robotic arms used now on the ISS and that grabbed satellites and did other tasks for NASA’s now-retired space shuttles.

After deliveries are completed, the Exoliner 1-888-726-6385 containers would be filled with ISS trash and then released. Jupiter’s robotic arm would attach it to a Centaur upper-stage rocket engine leftover from the delivery’s arrival. The engine would fire and push the disposal container back into the Earth’s atmosphere to burn up. NASA should like LMSS’ use of systems proven on multiple space missions, the international industry cooperation involved, and the ambition to prove technology for missions pushing out into deep space, the company said. LMSS is the lead contractor developing the Orion spaces capsules for NASA, the spacecraft designed to carry the first astronauts on missions beyond the moon to other destinations in the solar system, including Mars. The ISS is the size of a football field, largest thing humanity has placed in orbit. It has also been continuously occupied in orbit for 15 years. “It’s the proving ground for how we live and work in space and how we

will get ready to go deeper into space and become more of space-faring nation,” Crocker said. LMSS considers the Jupiter system the starting pieces of creating experimental human outposts 1,000 times farther into space than the ISS. That’s why LMSS derived Jupiter from spacecraft that were designed to handle the intense radiation of space outside the Earth’s magnetic field, said Josh Hopkins, LMSS space exploration architect. He oversees a team figuring out technologies needed for deep-space missions. The Jupiter’s Exoliner system could one day, without modification, launch with the Orion capsule atop NASA’s Space Launch System rockets, making them ready for use in long missions. The 14-foot diameter, 30-foot long containers could have treadmills for astronauts, water- and oxygen-recycling life support systems the size of refrigerators and other material making it possible for astronauts to spend weeks in space.Source: Denver Business Journal A2Z Manufacturing

The Defense Department has agreed to allow BAE Systems to export anti-missile technology that was developed in 2008 to protect Army helicopters from heat-seeking missiles. Friendly nations for the first time will be able to acquire the Advanced Threat Infrared Countermeasures (ATIRCM) system, the company announced in March. BAE Systems received a fast-track contract in 2008 to develop and produce the ATIRCM system on an accelerated schedule in the wake of rampant missile attacks against Army helicopters in war zones. BAE already exports its “common missile warning system” but the ATIRCM laser countermeasure had been restricted from foreign sales until now. When an aircraft comes under attack, the warning system detects the incoming missile and communicates the missile’s position relative to the aircraft, cueing the ATIRCM jam head to the missile’s location. ATIRCM then locates and tracks the incoming threat and emits a high-energy laser beam to thwart the missile’s infrared seeker, effectively blinding its guidance system and preventing it from homing in on the aircraft. “We are seeing tremendous international interest for this system, which has proven to be both highly effective and reliable since its fielding in 2009,” Bill Staib, director of threat management solutions at BAE Systems, said in a statement. The system also can be installed in fixed-wing aircraft, including commercial airliners. The Department of Homeland Security approved it for use by U.S. commercial airplanes. BAE Systems officials hailed the decision to allow foreign sales of ATIRCM as the company faces increased global competition. Other U.S. firms, as well as European and Israeli manufacturers, have developed comparable missile defense systems and all compete aggressively in the international arms market. “We are talking to several customers internationally,” said Tom Kirkpatrick, ATIRCM program manager at BAE Systems in Nashua, New Hampshire. “It is a big deal that the U.S. government is allowing this,” Kirkpatrick told National Defense.

The worldwide proliferation of shoulder-fired missiles, commonly known as manpads, has fueled demand for defensive systems, Kirkpatrick said.Technologies like ATIRCM are designed to defeat “advanced threats,” including modern manpads, he added. “The Army has said publicly the system has saved aircraft. Its performance speaks well, and several countries are interested in buying it.”

The obvious target customers, he said, are countries that buy Chinook helicopters and BAE’s common missile warning system. Permission to export ATIRCM is not a blanket license, however, and BAE will have to seek specific authorization to sell the system on a case by case basis.

Next level tool grinding. Faster, more accurate, more economical, ergonomic.

It’s here!

The decision was the culmination of a lengthy review by Defense and State Department panels, as well as White House officials. “It was not easy to get export approval,” Kirkpatrick said. “Given the advanced nature of the technology, it gets a fair amount of scrutiny.”

The tool grinder you’ve been waiting for

The go-ahead to BAE Systems follows two other major export policy decisions last month that were welcomed by the defense industry. The most surprising was an end to the ban of U.S. military and commercial drone exports. Although sales will be closely scrutinized, the new policy would ease previously ironclad restrictions on U.S. sales of military unmanned aircraft internationally. Also notable was an announcement earlier this month that the Raytheon Co. had received approval to export a gallium nitride-based active electronically scanned array sensor used in the Patriot air and missile defense system. A factor in that decision was pressure from non-U.S. buyers of the Patriot that have sought to upgrade it so it performs at levels comparable to the U.S. system. The defense industry for years has faulted the Obama administration for not doing enough to facilitate U.S. sales to allied countries, despite efforts by the administration to ease bureaucratic burdens associated with the export licensing process, and actions to remove restrictions on “dual use” technology exports. Companies have complained that government agencies often have conflicting views of what technologies fall under the control of the International Traffic in Arms Regu-

lations, and have called for more predictability about what markets they can pursue. The Pentagon’s chief weapons buyer Frank Kendall has championed measures that would allow U.S. companies to sell more equipment overseas. Kendall and other officials have called for greater defense exports as international sales of U.S. weapons helps to lower the cost of Defense Department programs. Administration officials also have begun to appreciate the foreign-policy benefits of allowing defense sales to allies, said Remy Nathan, vice president of international affairs at the Aerospace Industries Association. “The administration is thinking about security cooperation more,” Nathan said. “Frank Kendall has been taking a more active role in engaging our allies and partners at international trade shows.” Kendall also has suggested the Defense Department should encourage companies to design more “exportable” systems, Nathan said. Meanwhile, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, which manages sales to foreign militaries, has announced plans to reduce red tape and work more efficiently. “You are also seeing more State and Defense Department collaboration.” Rapidly changing and growing security concerns likely have contributed to the greater focus on defense exports,” Nathan said. “Working with partners is becoming more important.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

Exact Tool Grinding, Known For Its Superior Tool Grinding and Specialty Tool Design, Announces Improved Time and Design With Their ANCA FastGrind Tom Barnard didn’t grow up dreaming to someday open his own business, become an entrepreneur. Rather, he planned to work hard all of his life, excel in his trade, that of Journeyman tool grinder, and then retire. He knew tool grinding as well as any expert you will meet, having started literally as a teenager growing up in a small town outside of Eugene, Oregon. But life often has different plans for us. In Tom’s case, he spent 3 decades as a tool grinder (and subsequently a tool and fixture designer), many of which were with his long-term employer in the Salt Lake City area. The company changed names throughout Tom’s tenure due to acquisitions. (E-Systems, which was acquired by Raytheon Aircraft Corp, and then sold to Moog.) Finally, the large entity announced that it would be moving operations to the Philippines. Tom says, “The company gave us a few years notice before they relocated to the Philippines. It gave me time to plan to open my own business, which I named Exact Tool Grinding.”Tom continued to work for his employer, but he and his wife worked 2-3 jobs to save enough money for when Tom would actually go out on his own. Tom says, “My wife and I taught motorcycle safety classes, I was a machine shop teacher at Salt Lake City Community College, I worked full time for my employer, and I opened my business, where I worked evenings and weekends at a friend’s machine shop.”

and he would learn from a Journeyman tool grinder. “Tom can manually grind tools you would expect to be done on a CNC grinder”, one of his long-term customers said. “He is just that good.” Still manual grinding of tools is clearly more time consuming than it would take with a CNC grinder, and it was not as accurate. Tom says, “I am very conservative by nature. I knew that when Jess joined the business, if we were to make this a viable entity that would continue for the next decades, we would need to invest in a CNC grinding machine. But we didn’t believe that we could afford one or that we could get the financing we needed.” Tom contacted a couple of local dealers in Salt Lake City. “One dealer never even called me back, and I then called the regional manager for the builder, and he too never followed back up with me.”

Tom says, “The machinists I had worked with at our past employer spread out into new positions in various machine shops all over the valley. This gave me an entre into a number of companies, and they knew me for my specialty.”

He also called Smith Machinery Co, who carries the ANCA grinder machine line. “Everyone views ANCA as a superior grinding machine.” He continued, “Just as important as the quality of the machine I was buying was the company I would be buying it from. Smith Machinery was immediately very helpful, and they scheduled time for me to meet with some of ANCA’s engineering and support team”, he said.Tom was familiar with the best-known CNC grinding machines from his previous employer, but he says he wasn’t involved in the purchase decisions, nor did he have experience running the machines.

Business grew from the time Tom went full time in 2009 through the next years, enough so that Tom had to hire his first employee to support the company’s growth. Tom’s son Jess was working as a plumber, and though the skills for plumbing and machine tool grinding are quite different, Jess shared Tom’s mechanical aptitude,

Jess and Tom now have several months of experience running their ANCA FastGrind. Tom says, “The quality and consistency of the tools is now superior to what we could do manually.”The company continues to utilize their manual

When the day finally arrived when all the machinists working for Moog would no longer be employed by the large corporation,Tom was ready to begin running his business full time. He purchased some of the manual grinding machines from his previous employer, and leased his own private shop, where he still resides today.

grinding machines, and Tom says the manual machines are best sometimes when they are just grinding one tool or for insert modifications. He says the FastGrind offers the following: • Quick and easy set-up • Superior tool accuracy • High quality surface finish • Flexibility to grind a large variety of tool types • Machine reliability and accuracy Tom knows that he made the right decision in purchasing the ANCA. “For one thing”, he says, “We are very pleased with the service we get both from Smith Machinery and from the team at ANCA.” He continued, “I didn’t plan to make any money on this machine for 6 months.” Jess attended ANCA’s weeklong training in Detroit just after the company bought the new machine. Tom says, “Last month, less than 6 months after owning the new machine, 57% of our business was derived from the ANCA. And while I initially thought I would have this machine for 10 years, and buy my second ANCA in 5 years, I now believe it will happen much sooner than my original time line.” Exact Tool Grinding is well known for its re-grind capabilities, and they perform this service to more than 100 shops, most of who are in Utah. But they do more than re-grinding. Much more. They do a substantial amount of tool design, much like what Tom did at his previous employer. Tom says they also do a substantial amount of building solid carbide form tools. “Our sweet spot is tools that are ¾” and smaller, but we can support customers’ larger tooling requests. For example, when we have a customer who comes to us with a 1” tool that needs fluting, while it is time consuming for us to do, we are still often able to turn the tool around to them in a timely maner -- versus several weeks if they were to order it from a catalog house.” The company additionally has customers who purchase a generic end mill and have Exact Tool Grinding tool it with a corner radius or a corner chamfer. Tom says customers request this service to save money on their tooling. The company also is able to ‘re-flute’ tools. Exact Tool Grinding’s customers appreciate them for a number of reasons, most importantly that the quality they will receive from their regrind or custom tools is second to none. Additionally, as a small shop, Tom is extremely flexible. “I know if one of our customer’s machine is down, it is costing the shop over $100 per hour. If it’s down because they don’t have a tool, we are here to help the best we can to get them running again”. To learn more about ANCA’s superior line of grinders, call Smith Machinery Co. at 801-263-6403 or visit smithmachinetools.com If you need tool grinding or custom grinding, Exact Tool Grinding is an excellent choice. This milestone is important because drones will transform the energy industry across a multitude of categories, from improving safety and troubleshooting potential mechanical problems to surveying areas otherwise inaccessible to people in the field.

That material, controlled and delivered to you anywhere around the globe, will result in substantial savings (from reduced travel and insurance costs involved with sending workers to remote job sites) and greater real-time intelligence about critical projects vulnerable to delays or mechanical problems.

Indeed, the upcoming (May1-3) Drones, Data X Conference in Santa Cruz, California, is a testament to the international popularity of drones for a diverse array of commercial interests. I plan to attend this three-day event because the crossover appeal of drones has significant relevance to the energy industry. For example: Given the personal dangers that are an inevitable part of energy exploration – not for nothing do we equip workers with safety gloves and glasses, and fire retardant boots and jackets –accidents do and will continue to occur. Minimizing these risks is a priority, but, where conventional measures may as well be pointless (like awaiting urgent care from a medical flotilla while a roughneck is on the brink of death), drones can be the lifesaving resource that increases safety for a traditionally hazardous profession. In the case of that injured roughneck, who may have suffered a heart attack, a drone carrying a defibrillator can be dispatched to land next to him – on a platform in the Gulf of Mexico, or off the California Coast, or in more treacherous waters in the Atlantic – as a coworker, speaking with a doctor, restarts the patient’s heart before a Coast Guard cutter or helicopter arrives. Those critical seconds or minutes are just that: The moment when a person is close to death, unless someone can stabilize him as emergency personnel are en route to a distant, makeshift village or excavation site to render additional care.

That safety principle also extends to equipment in general. Coming back to my earlier comment about vision – that a drone can focus on specific spots, where, for instance, it is too difficult for a worker to inspect a gauge or meter – this perspective can spare an entire crew from a possible explosion or sudden release of steam and chemicals, causing third-degree burns or worse. Picture a drone stationed parallel to piping, approximately 400 feet above sea level, relaying (in real-time) high-resolution video of a leak or fractured valve. That apparently deceptive fissure could, in fact, be a prelude to a breakdown in operations, the expulsion of toxic chemicals and an inescapable cauldron for workers. An energy executive can, based on this intelligence, evacuate his employees before a potential disaster ensues. Drones are the newest hardware in an industry known for its pioneering spirit. They are the ally of safety, and the enabler of safer energy exploration.By Lewis Fein, writer and technology enthusiast.

BNSF Railway plans $141 million spending program in Colorado BNSF Railway Co., one of two main freight railroads in Colorado, will spend about $141 million for maintenance and improvement projects in the state in 2015. The railroad company announced in December it would spend a record $6 billion on capital investments nationwide in 2015. “This year’s substantial investments in Colorado are a clear reflection of how important our operations in the state are to our overall network and our unwavering commitment to always operating safely — for our people and the communities in which we operate,” said Steve Nettleton, BNSF general manager operations Power River Division, in a statement. BNSF’s 2015 capital projects in Colorado include extending sidings — the short stretches of railroad track used to store railroad cars and trains — in several areas of the state, including Brush, Barr, Keensburg and Wiggins. BNSF also said it will build a new siding west of Commerce City to

allow one train to pull off the mainline onto the siding to allow another train to pass. BNSF also said it plans to extend tracks at its terminal in Denver and Sterling to improve the amount of throughput capacity on the track network. BNSF’s 2015 maintenance program in Colorado also will include 580 miles of track surfacing and undercutting work, the replacement of nearly 16 miles of rail and close to 123,500 ties, as well as signal upgrades. BNSF is owned by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Source: Denver Business Journal A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

Bell-Boeing Expecting at Least Two International Orders for V-22 Osprey in 2015 Osprey land an international contract, but company executives are betting that they will have two foreign customers in hand by the end of the year.

“There’s nothing that’s turned into an [letter of offer and acceptance] yet, but we’re working on that,” said Vince Tobin, one of the Bell-Boeing V-22 program directors, in reference to a formal offer made to a company in the foreign military sales process. He expects to sign two LOAs in 2015. Japan’s ministry of defense announced the purchase 17 Ospreys last year, although there is no contract set in stone yet, he said during an nterview at the International Defense Exhibition and Conference (IDEX). Israel had plans to buy the tiltrotor, but that deal remains in flux due to budget constraints. Additionally, the platform has received significant interest from countries in the Middle East and the companies are pursuing those opportunities, he said. Breaking into the export market would be one of several high points this year for the Bell-Boeing partnership, which has struggled to find sales for the Osprey outside of the Marine Corps and special operations communities. That changed when the Navy in their fiscal 2016 budget disclosed plans to buy 44 aircraft for what the service calls carrier onboard delivery — that is, flying people, supplies and cargo on and off flattops. The Navy’s Ospreys will probably be slightly different than those flown by the Marine Corps and special operators, although the

companies have not heard from the service what its requirements are, Tobin said. “Our assumption is that longer unrefueled range is always something that customers are interested in, especially for the Navy application for carrier on deck delivery,” he said. “We’re always looking for better ways to integrate radios.” Northrop Grumman’s C-2 Greyhound has filled the carrier onboard delivery role since 1966. During the heated battle against Bell-Boeing, Northrop proposed modernizing the C-2’s wings, engine and avionics, which executives claimed would be at least two times less expensive than buying a new aircraft. Bell-Boeing asserted that the Osprey would be more cost-effective over the long haul. According to the budget, the Navy plans to procure 22 V-22s in fiscal years 2018 through 2020. That will likely result in another five-year multiyear contract for Ospreys to be signed before the current one ends in September of calendar year 2018, Tobin said. He predicts the Navy will release a request for proposals to Bell-Boeing in spring or summer and a contract being signed by the end of 2017.

Vestas upping jobs by 400 in Windsor Vestas is planning to hire up to 400 workers at its Windsor blade plant in northern Colorado. The company has scheduled a job fair March 21 for production and production support workers at its factory, 1140 Eastman Dr. Piper Baron, head of external communications for Vestas Americas, was quoted in the Greeley Tribune saying the expansion is due to strong demand for wind energy.“We had a very successful 2014 and as a result our order pipeline is pretty full,” Baron said. The company has four Colorado plants in Windsor, Brighton and Pueblo. Last month, the company said its orders for wind turbines around the world jumped by 10 percent in 2014, compared to the previous year. Vestas said it logged orders for 6,544 megawatts worth of new wind turbines in 2014. The company’s wind turbines can generate between 1.8 megawatts and 3.3 megawatts worth of power, depending on the model. One megawatt of power from a wind turbine can support the power demands of about 300 U.S. homes. Vestas, in its 2014 annual report, said year-end revenues were about $7.8 billion (U.S.), a 14 percent jump over 2013. But 2015 revenues are expected to fall to $7.4 billion, the company said. German Deutschemark went through a similar strengthening, doubling its dollar-purchasing power between early 1985 and late 1987. In August 1985, year-over-year growth in the manufacturing component of the Industrial Production Index was just 0.8%. By the fall of 1987 it had roared ahead to over 8%. Today, the reverse may be happening. Already, there are signs of a currency impact.Yardeni Research points out that inflation-adjusted exports were up 2.9% year over year through January, while imports increased 5.2%. Strong Dollar Stands in Manufacturing Sector’s Way At first glance, that would seem like an exaggeration. The Industrial Production Index, is seen having risen 0.2% in February from the previous month, according to economists surveyed. That would be the same pace as in January and represent 4.8% growth from a year earlier. But the components of that index have been moving sharply in opposite directions. Electric and gas utilities increased 8.4%, year over year, in January 2014.They have moved into reverse since, retreating 6.6% this January. Manufacturing, on the other hand, accelerated to 5.6% most recently from 1.5% annual growth last January. That is the best pace in four years. The problem is that the strong dollar may slow this down. The U.S. Dollar Index broke above 100 from 80 last June, a huge move in so short a time. To gauge the impact of a strong dollar, look to what happened in the mid-1980s. Back then, the dollar strengthened enough to spur an unprecedented round of coordinated currency intervention known as the Plaza Accord in September 1985. The dollar went from buying 242 Japanese yen that summer to 153 the next year and 120 by 1988.TheWest A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

“The combination of Ball and Rexam creates a global metal beverage packaging supplier capable of leveraging its geographic presence, innovative products and talented employees to better serve customers of all sizes,” said Ball chairman and CEO John Hayes. Ball’s worldwide headquarters “will remain here in Broomfield, and there will be a transitional period as we consolidate Rexam’s current headquarters,” said company spokeswoman Renee Robinson. “For production facilities, our strategy is to retain and operate the existing Ball and Rexam manufacturing plants, subject to regulatory approval.” The combined company would control an estimated 60 percent of the North American beverage-can market and an even larger share in Europe, according to Morningstar.

All the cool names were picked when Darren and Christina wanted to start their new business, designing and building products for the mountain bike suspension industry. Then, Darren was mountain biking on a weekend. “It was a tough uphill”, Darren said, “And I thought just push yourself to get to the top of the mountain. It will be easier going down.” “Push Industries”, the name wasn’t taken, and Darren and Christina felt it was a name that epitomized what the sport of mountain biking was all about -- always pushing yourself. That was more than a decade ago. Darren had so much industry experience and relationships to start the business. Push Industries opened for business as a woman owned business in 2003, inValencia, California. Darren always had a passion for bicycles, growing up in Maine. When he saw an ad for the United Bicycle Institute (UBI), where he could learn to become a bicycle mechanic, Darren left the east coast to live in Ashland, Oregon, studying to learn his new trade. He returned to the east coast to open a bicycle shop with a partner. 4 years later, Marzocchi, a global manufacturer of motorbike and mountain bike suspensions, contacted him. Marzocchi knew of Darren since he was servicing and tuning their products. He continued to hone his skills, and he was involved in research and development for new products. From Marzocchi, Darren went to work for Eibach, manufacturer of high performance suspension components and competition springs. When Darren left Eibach, he did consulting for the industry. Darren says, “This was an outstanding experience for me. I was helping to develop new products.” “But”, he continued, “I was doing research and development for other people, and my wife and I decided we could design and build new products for our own company.” When Christina and Darren launched Push Industries, Darren reached out to the industry contacts he had worked with over the years. He thanks Richard Cunningham, at the time editor for Mountain Bike Action magazine, with featuring his company in the magazine. “Sales took off from there”, he says.

“In the early days, we really didn’t have a lot of competition”, Darren said. “There were a number of companies manufacturing suspension line products for motorcycles, but not for mountain bikes.” Today Darren says there are a number of competitors, but most of them do their manufacturing in Asia, not in the US, as Push does. Two years into business ownership, Christina and Darren made a quality of life decision. They knew they could run Push Industries anywhere in the US, since most of their customers shipped their products from all over the country.Tired of the high costs and congestion in Southern California, they moved their family to Colorado, where Push is located today, in Loveland. As the economy took a turn for the worse in late 2008, Darren says, “Our sales weren’t down, but our deliveries from our suppliers were suffering”. Push Industries relied upon machine shops to machine their parts, and assembly was done at Push. Darren says, “I wasn’t a machinist, but in all of my years working for manufacturers, I was around machines. He contacted Moncktons Machine Tools in Denver, the local Haas dealer. Darren says, “They assured me that I could take manufacturing in-house, and they were true to their word.” Today, Push Industries owns 5 CNC machines, including 3 Haas, 1 Citizen screw machine, and a Mori Seiki. They launched their first patent pending product just months ago, and Darren says they couldn’t have built the product without their high precision machine tools. The high end shock absorber built in house is patent pending, and Darren says it offers a ‘bigger grin factor’, allowing bicycle enthusiasts to tackle

terrains they never could have done before. Push Industries was using FeatureCAM even before they owned any machines, Darren says. “We would write programs that we would send to the machine shops building our parts”. He says that this enabled Push’s suppliers (the machine shops) to lower the cost of manufacturing the Push products. Darren learned about FeatureCAM when he ran into an old friend, an accountant, who with no machining background, was easily programming with the software. “If someone with no manufacturing background can write programs on FeatureCAM, then I could too.” Darren admittedly over analyzes any new technology that Push Industries adopts. “We evaluated several CAM software products, and we chose FeatureCAM because it had the most intuitive interface.” Blaine Duke came out from Delcam (Delcam is the developer of FeatureCAM). He offered some training to the team, and offered them a 60-day trial of the software. 7 years into FeatureCAM ownership, Darren says, “We bought FeatureCAM due to its intuitive interface, and we’ve stayed with them for a number of reasons: • The support is outstanding. If you can’t figure out the solution, reaching out to their technical support is easy, and you always reach someone who is extremely knowledgeable. Darren really appreciates their online technical support, which was introduced by Delcam in the last year. “In the past, if you had a small issue, you just worked through it yourself. With the online help at Delcam, you send the question, go to lunch, and by the time you come back you have a solution from Delcam, often better than what you could have come up with yourself.” • The Delcam software continues to evolve. “It gets better and better each year”, Darren says.Today, the company uses FeatureCAM 3D for 3 dimensional machining, FeatureRECOGNTIION, FeatureTURN,

and FeatureTURN/MILL. Darren says, “It’s not like work. Click one button, which is the FeatureRECOGNITION, and it will pick up the 3D milling all by itself.” • Darren says, “FeatureCAM is a very high performance product, but at the end of the day, it is really easy to use and it allows us to program in a fun environment without any constraints. FeatureCAM is gnarly, and gnarly is good!” • FeatureCAM greatly increases Push’s time to market for new products. Darren says prior to using FeatureCAM, the company introduced 4 new products in a year. Once they began using the power of FeatureCAM, they introduced 4 new products in just the first quarter. • The Delcam software communicates directly with Push’s CAD software, Solidworks. “If we make an engineering change with Solidworks, it imports directly for our programmer into FeatureCAM”, Darren says, “and this is a critical element for a research and development company.” Darren says, “When I talk to colleagues and tell them the support I receive from Delcam, they are always surprised.” He continued, “Delcam offers superior support – they are on the upper end of the scale.” “If people saw how we use FeatureCAM to maximize our efficiency in building products, for a small company of our size and the level of production that we do, they would buy it too.” He says that many small manufacturers and machine shops utilize entry-level CAM software. “They don’t know how FeatureCAM can change their business.” To learn how you can increase your ‘grin factor’ when mountain biking, contact Push Industries at (970) 278-1110 or visit pushindustries.com To learn more about Delcam’s superior line of CAM software tools, contact them at 1-877-DELCAM1 (335-2261) or visit Delcam-na.com A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

The House Finance Committee voted to back a measure that is part of a 10-bill workforce-development package representing the most bipartisan work being done by the Colorado Legislature. House Bill 1227, sponsored by Rep. KC Becker, D-Boulder, aims to help Colorado universities compete for top students and to give businesses within the state an edge in attracting graduates in some of the highest-paying and most growing fields. The bill does this by reimbursing employers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for half of the costs they put toward paying off workers’ students loans, up to a maximum of $5,000 per employee per year. The workers must have been employed for at least one year, must have graduated from college no later than 2010 and must be making less than $60,000 per year.

Noel Ginsburg, chairman of the Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Alliance, pointed to his own company, Intertech Plastics, to show how desperately Colorado needs to get involved in increasing the pipeline of high-tech workers. The average age of a machinist at his shop is the upper 60s, and five of his 24 machines are down because he can’t find qualified workers to run them, he said.

Becker noted that even oil and gas companies employing hydraulic fracturing could receive the tax breaks if they met all of the other conditions of the bill.“There is a huge loss of jobs in our state to our graduates because they’re not trained to fill them,” said Rep. Dan Pabon, D-Denver. “This will help to change that.” Reporter- Denver Business Journal

SLC Mayor announces Aviation Appreciation Month The Mayor of Salt Lake City has declared March Aviation Appreciation Month, and data indicates general aviation airports bring in millions

of dollars and thousands of jobs for Utah. General aviation airports may not service the larger airlines most Utahns are familiar with, but companies like Leading Edge Aviation use the smaller airports frequently. Kevin Wayman, Leading Edge Aviation, said these airports provide services for emergency responders.“A lot of people don’t realize that these smaller airports are a lifeline for people like AirMed, Angel Flight,” he said. He added “We get a lot of transit aircraft in and out of here that are doing humanitarian aid or helping people with animals, or flying people that are sick.” Many people also use general airports to reach business meetings, which allows them to avoid the lines and busy schedules of larger airports.Randy Ostman, Leading Edge Aviaation, said the smaller airports also help supply new pilots. A new space race emerges as NASA prepares to award contract to ferry supplies to space station Lugging groceries and supplies to the astronauts on the International Space Station may not be as cool as ferrying the astronauts themselves into orbit. But the NASA contract to fly cargo to the station in unmanned rocket ships has attracted bids from high-profile companies in what analysts say is another indication of commercial spaceflight’s recent renaissance. It appears that at least five space firms have submitted proposals for the work, including giants such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin, which didn’t bother to bid on the work the last time. In a new sort of space race, the contract has touched off an intense competition between stalwart defense contractors and new space start-ups that have, in just a few years, shown they can compete. Years ago, NASA implemented a plan to outsource transportation to the space station in low Earth orbit, saying that, with a tight budget, it needed to be focused on bigger targets, such as Mars. For the past few years, two companies have been resupplying the space station, taking supplies and experiments to the orbital laboratory. Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s SpaceX won a $1.6 billion contract, and so far has had five successful trips, and is scheduled for a sixth in April.

clear that this new paradigm shift was going to work. A lot of people were saying this is wrong; NASA has to have its own rocket.”

Time Is Money. Start Here and SAVE!

SpaceX’s successful launches not only propelled the once obscure start-up into the mainstream but demonstrated, even to the large, traditional defense contractors, that there is money to be made in space. “We’re really moving quickly away from that old paradigm where NASA dominates,” Caceres said. Last year, NASA awarded contracts to SpaceX and Boeing, worth a total of $6.8 billion, to take astronauts to the space station. Now, in the coming months, it is expected to award another contract for cargo resupply, which could also be worth billions. This time, the big players are lining up for a piece of the action. Fresh off its win to take astronauts to the space station, Boeing thinks it has a good shot. Its CST-100 capsule, originally designed for astronauts, could be easily reconfigured to handle cargo, said John Mulholland, a Boeing vice president in its space programs. Unlike some space vehicles that plop down in the sea, the CST-100 can land on land, with a combination of parachutes and air-bag like balloons that deploy under the capsule to ensure a soft landing. The company didn’t bid on the last cargo contract but isn’t surprised so many are now. “What you’re seeing now is more recognition that there is a near- and longterm market for commercial access to low Earth orbit, and that is why you see more competition emerging,” Mulholland said. Orbital ATK said its experience delivering cargo to the space station successfully gives it an edge. “We’ve proven the system works and works extremely

A spokesman for SpaceX wouldn’t confirm whether it is bidding, but analysts think that after its recent successes it wouldn’t pass up the opportunity. The world’s largest defense contractor, Lockheed Martin, is in as well, promising to unveil “an innovative, reliable solution” at an invitation-only cocktail reception at D.C.’s Union Station later this week. Lockheed makes the Orion space capsule, which late last year NASA launched on a historic mission, sending the unmanned spacecraft farther than any human-rated vehicle had gone in 40 years. Then there is the Sierra Nevada Corporation. It made it to the final round of the contract to take astronauts to the space station but ultimately lost. Still, NASA has invested more than $363 million in its Dream Chaser space plane, which looks like a miniature version of the space shuttle and can land on commercial runways. Apple’s electric car could be in production by 2020, report says Apple Inc., which theWall Street Journal said has been working on an electric car, wants its team to begin production of a vehicle as soon as 2020. The project is code-named “Titan” and has an initial design of a vehicle that is similar to a minivan, one source told the Wall Street Journal. CEO Tim Cook approved Titan a year ago and assigned veteran product design Vice President Steve Zadesky to lead the group, people familiar with the matter told the newspaper. Apple has built its empire selling personal electronics like the iPhone — this would represent its first serious foray out of that industry. Additionally, the car could set the stage for a battle for customers with the likes of Tesla Motors Inc. and General Motors Co., both of which are targeting a 2017 release of an electric vehicle that can go more than 200 miles on a single charge and cost less than $40,000, according to Bloomberg. Bloomberg notes the timeframe is quite aggressive, as automakers usually spend five to seven years developing a car. Creating something from scratch, as Apple is doing, should take 10 years, Dennis Virag, president of Automotive Consulting Group told Bloomberg. Nissan Motor Co. is also a challenger in the space, while Google Inc. is going another route — developing a driverless car. For Tesla, the aggressive timeline may mean that the window for the Model 3(its true money making play) could be further tightened. Apple has significant catch-up to do with 12-year-old Tesla and auto giant General Motors, but its famously vast cash reserves could provide an advantage in the overhead and capital expenditure-heavy car industry.

FAA: Business Jet Fleet To Grow Over Next Two Decades The active business jet fleet is expected to experience strong growth over the next two decades, the FAA says in a newly-released forecast. At the same time, however, the piston-powered aircraft fleet is expected to decline slightly over the same period, the FAA projects. Recovery in the business jet market has been slow, and 2014 marked the first year of shipment increases by U.S. manufacturers since 2008.

“When Bretta told me that ISO shouldn’t be treated as “Rocket Science” I started listening. She was able to back it up with explanations we could understand. The difference we found with Bretta over other consultants we have talked to is that she herself has gone through the pain of ISO internally when working in quality departments. She is the President of her own company and is a certified auditor.”

“The forecast calls for robust growth in the long-term outlook, driven by higher corporate profits and the growth of worldwide GDP, though at rates slightly lower than those predicted last year,” the FAA said. ”Continued concerns about safety, security and flight delays keep business aviation attractive relative to commercial air travel.”

aircraft as the aging fleet starts to slow down, it said.

“We predict business usage of general aviation aircraft will expand at a faster pace than that for personal and recreational use,” the FAA said in its forecast. “Increased demand for turboprop aircraft also contributes to increased turbine fleet and hours.”

In the medium term, much of the increase in hours flown will reflect strong growth in the rotorcraft and turbine jet fleets.

The business jet fleet is projected to grow at an average rate of 2.8% a year from 2014 through 2035, growing to a total of 20,815 aircraft, the FAA’s forecast said. Overall, the active general aviation fleet is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 0.4% over the 21-year forecast, from an estimated 198,860 aircraft in 2014 to 214,260 by 2035, it said. The fixed wing turbine aircraft fleet is expected to grow 2.2% a year, while fixed-wing piston-powered aircraft are expected to decline 0.6% on average per year. The rotorcraft fleet, however, is expected to grow an average of 2.5% per year. The number of general aviation hours flown are forecasted to grow at an average rate of 1.4% a year, from 23.1 million hr. in 2014 to 30.6 million hr. in 2035, the forecast said. Fixed-wing aircraft hours flown are expected to grow 2.9% a year, while fixed-wing piston aircraft hours flown are projected to decline at a rate of 3% a year. The FAA projects faster growth in hours will occur after 2023, with increases in the fixed wing turbine aircraft fleet and increasing utilization of single and multi-engine piston

In addition, declining fuel prices will slow down the decrease in piston flight hours over the short-to-medium term.

“The real power of additive is taking six parts and designing it into one. You can create geometry that you can’t make it any other way,” says Greg Morris, the business development manager of additive technologies at GE Aviation. Not to mention having the ability to test a design, fail quickly, and re-test a new design quickly. “You can iterate quickly, find out what’s working and not working, change designs, and you can do that many more times than what traditional technologies would allow people to do in the past,” says Morris, who says it took about 50 different iterations to finally have a working Leap engine fuel nozzle design. So what does GE’s big push into additive manufacturing look like? Part of it is a $50 million investment that started last year to beef up a production facility in Auburn, Alabama, by installing hulking 3-D printers—like those produced by worldwide e-manufacturing company EOS—and hiring as many as 300 full-time employees. That’s in addition to the close to $140 million GE has invested into its GE Aviation Additive Development Center. Formerly Morris Technologies, GE acquired the company in 2012 to lead its push into an additive future.

It was Morris Technologies that began working in secret with GE early last decade to 3-D print a fuel nozzle for the Leap engine. Today, close to 90 people are employed by GE Aviation in Cincinnati, a number that stands to increase rapidly over the next several years, doing prototyping and low-rate initial production on a variety of 3-D-printed parts, including the Leap engine’s fuel nozzle. Once a fully tested part looks like it’s headed for general production, the GE Aviation team in Cincinnati does an initial slug of production-quality components, and then hands off their work to the additive manufacturing team.

HB335 would provide permanent funding for Southern Utah University and Dixie State University to work with local schools in providing STEM activities for students as young as 8 years old, as well as professional development for teachers. “I’ve been more excited about this proposal than anything else that I’ve worked on in my three years here in the Legislature,” said bill sponsor Rep. Jon Stanard, R-St. George. Currently, Dixie State University offers LEGO robotics activities, STEM summer camps and coding classes for students. It is also considering offering Latino- and girls-only courses.

“There’s a great disparity of very, very few females that go into these fields,” Stanard said. “They’ve found that what interests girls is very, very different than what interests boys. With the boys, especially once they get to college, it’s ‘What does it pay and how am I going to provide for my family?’ For girls, it’s ‘How can I change the world?’” Southern Utah University uses mobile science labs to provide activities for students. The university also facilitates training for science teachers in public schools. Stanard said the programs would help satisfy heavy demand from Utah industries for qualified workers in STEM fields.

“We are not even scratching the surface at the need and the demand that’s out there,” Stanard said. The bill asks for more than $700,000 in ongoing funds to be divided between the two universities, with 100 percent of the funds going to the public education programs. However, the bill’s fiscal note could change “significantly,” depending on where it falls among other budget priorities in the final days of the legislative session, Stanard said. The bill now goes to the full Senate.

It’s rare to see such substantial helicopter orders coming out of the Pentagon in such a short time period. The Boeing Co. Defense, Space & Security segment in Mesa, Ariz., makes the AH-64E, while Airbus Helicopters Inc. in Herndon Va., makes the UH-72A.

The AH-64E Apache is being delivered to the U.S. Army and has been selected by several international defense forces.

These orders are good news not only for Boeing and Airbus, but also for the many subcontractors that contribute to these military rotorcraft. On the AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopter, for example, General Electric makes the engines; Lockheed Martin makes the targeting system; Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin make the radar; Intevac Photonics makes image intensifier cameras; and Elbit Systems of America makes the helicopter’s mission processor as well as its integrated helmet and display sight system (IHADSS). On the UH-72 Lakota light helicopter, Raytheon is providing the helicopter’s radios, CAE is building the cockpit simulators; Sagem Avionics provides the automatic flight control systems; Thales North America is building the avionics suite with glass cockpit; Turbomeca USA assembles the UH-72A’s Arriel 1E2 engines; and Wulfsberg Electronics provides the UH-72A’s navigation and communications systems. The UH-72 Lakota is a twin-engine helicopter with a four-bladed main rotor, and is a militarized version of the EC145 rotorcraft that is replacing aging UH-1H/V and OH-58A/C helicopters in the Army and Army National Guard fleets. The Lakota seats two pilots and six passengers. Two stretchers can be installed for MEDEVAC missions with a crew of four: pilot, co-pilot and two medics. The Raytheon AN/ARC-231 Skyfire is the Lakota’s multimode airborne communications system. The Army increasingly relies on combat helicopters like the Apache and the Lakota, and is expected to do so well into the future. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

A new space race emerges as NASA prepares to award contract to ferry supplies to space station

of cash and with more launches to its credit, has grown more robust. The other company to win the cargo contract, Orbital Sciences, now Orbital ATK, had its unmanned rocket explode shortly after takeoff last year. That raised questions about whether NASA should be relying on the commercial sector so heavily. But at NASA, the explosion did not dampen enthusiasm for outsourcing the work. That’s in part because of SpaceX’s success. But also because given the NASA’s tight budgets, it doesn’t really have a choice but to hire contractors to do the work for it, analysts said.

Lugging groceries and supplies to the astronauts on the International Space Station may not be as cool as ferrying the astronauts themselves into orbit. Some members of Congress and others criticized the decision, saying that private industry could not be trusted with such high-stakes work and that the business of spaceflight should be left to NASA. But in the years since, NASA’s decision to rely on commercial companies helped ignite the commercial space industry, which, backed by new infusions A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

46 • March / April 2015

The private space industry has been buoyed by billionaires, such as Musk, Richard Branson, who ownsVirgin Galactic, and Jeff Bezos, the Amazon. com founder who owns Blue Origin (as well as the Washington Post). But now others are looking to invest in space as well. On a recent trip to Silicon Valley, Eric Stallmer, the president of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation, said many other investors had a palpable fearof-missing-out vibe. “Tell me the companies I need to be looking out for,” he said they asked. “Never have we seen this level of investment come in.” In January, SpaceX announced it had received a $1 billion infusion from Google and Fidelity. Planet Labs, which builds and operates satellites, also announced this year that it had received $95 million in funding. The money, or interest, in space wasn’t there just a few years ago.At the time of the last cargo contract, “the environment looked different,” said Marco Caceres, an analyst with the Teal Group. “It wasn’t clear that this new paradigm shift was going to work. A lot of people were saying this is wrong; NASA has to have its own rocket.” SpaceX’s successful launches not only propelled the once obscure

start-up into the mainstream but demonstrated, even to the large, traditional defense contractors, that there is money to be made in space. Unlike some space vehicles that plop down in the sea, the CST-100 can land on land, with a combination of parachutes and airbag like balloons that deploy under the capsule to ensure a soft landing. The company didn’t bid on the last cargo contract but isn’t surprised so many are now. “What you’re seeing now is more recognition that there is a near- and long-term market for commercial access to low Earth orbit, and that is why you see more competition emerging,” Mulholland said.

Despite the explosion in October, Orbital ATK said its experience delivering cargo to the space station successfully gives it an edge. “We’ve proven the system works and works extremely well,” said spokesman Barron Beneski. “NASA knew we were a partner they could rely on.” On its next resupply mission this fall, the company will use a United Launch Alliance Atlas V while it continues to develop its new Antares rocket. The new rocket should be ready in March 2016 in time for the following cargo launch, he said. It’s an entirely different approach than the

other companies’ offerings, which is in part why it “can’t be counted out,” said Caceres, the space analyst. “It will once again put pressure on NASA to make a tough call.”

Colorado center for manufacturing lands $1.6 million federal grant Manufacturer’s Edge, a program that helps small/midsize manufacturing companies in Colorado, will get a $1,668,359 grant from the Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Manufacturer’s Edge (formerly known as the Colorado Association for Manufacturing and Technology) is a statewide manufacturing assistance center, partially funded by the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). Manufacturer’s Edge was one of 10 state MEP centers selected for funding in a nationwide competition. NIST awarded a total of $26 million in funding to help the centers increase their services and customer base. The new cooperative agreements are for five years, subject to availability of funding and successful annual reviews. “We are grateful for Senator Michael Bennet’s and the entire Colorado delegation’s continued strong support of the manufacturing community in Colorado,” said Tom Bugnitz, CEO of Manufacturer’s Edge. “This award is further indication of Colorado’s increased prominence in America’s manufacturing sector, and we look forward to helping Colorado manufacturing continue to innovate and grow in the coming years.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain
