“If you wait for customers to tell you that you need to do something, you’re too late. Good business leaders should be half a step ahead of what customers want, i.e. they don’t actually quite know they want it. That’s what innovation’s about.” Stuart Rose, British Business Executive Knighted for his services in the Retail Industry Innovation is defined as the process of translating an idea or invention into a good or service that creates value or for which customers will pay. To be called an innovation, an idea must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need. In business, innovation often results when the company applies ideas in order to further satisfy the needs and expectations of the customers. In a social context, innovation helps create new methods for alliance creation, joint venturing, flexible work hours, and creation of buyers’ purchasing power. In January of each year, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) takes place in Las Vegas. This grand-scale exhibition of the near future attracts thousands of companies and hundreds of thousands of attendees, setting the tone for the year ahead. CES amplifies the trends that are coming and exposes the ones that are fading. This year’s event was the largest ever, with more than 170,000 attendees, and included such emerging ‘Home Tech’, ‘Car Tech” and Gaming technologies as self-driving cars, wearable gadgets, and quantum Dot TVs, to name a few. It will be interesting to look back when we hit 2016 to see which of these technologies became a household must have. Innovation. How is it defined? I think you would be surprised at Forbes 2014 List of ‘The World’s Most Innovative Companies”. I was. It didn’t include companies like Apple or Facebook, or Sony, or Uber. In fact, their worldwide list included only 3 companies I have even heard of (Amazon, Unilever, and ARM). 6 of their top 10 were US based, 4 were pharmaceutical companies (While I wouldn’t have predicted this, I can certainly understand the rationale), 2 were consumer products (Unilever and CP ALL, a Thailand based convenience store chain) and the others were software, computer, and IT related.

So we don’t all have the opportunity to create the coolest new technology, but we do all have an opportunity to innovate within our businesses. Remember, innovation comes from taking a customer need and exploring ways to improve on it, even before the customer asks for it. And since this magazine is heavily aerospace, medical and defense oriented, you as readers can innovate to make products that improve safety, save lives, or make people better.
Published bi-monthly to keep precision manufacturers abreast of news and to supply a viable vendor source for the industry.
I publish this magazine, and it is pretty low-tech. Yet, in order to continue to grow the readership, and the magazine, I must continuously look for ways to make it better and more relevant. One change you might notice effective this issue is that we are re-naming the magazine. 21 years ago the founder called the legacy publication the ‘Arizona Metalworker’. Once I purchased it, over time we changed the name to the ‘A2Z Metalworker’. This facilitated new editions in the Rocky Mountain region and then in the West Coast. Months ago, the newest edition changed its name to ‘A2Z Manufacturing’. Today, the Rocky Mountain edition follows suit. After all, we are about precision manufacturing, not just metalworking.
Advertising Rates, deadlines and mechanical requirements furnished upon request or you can go to www.azManufacturing.com.
In closing, all signs point to a fantastic 2015! Until next issue, I wish you success and innovation, and God Bless our Troops.

Colorado EDC offers incentives to 3 companies, including Vegas High Roller cabin maker Colorado Economic Development Commission members approved an extension of job-creation tax incentives for a Grand Junction company that built the cabins for Las Vegas’ High Roller Ferris wheel, as well as incentives for two other unknown companies. Leitner-Poma, a company that originally specialized in building ski lifts, received incentives in 2007 from the commission and from Grand Junction that could garner it as much as $600,000 if it created an expected 100 new jobs at its manufacturing facility. But after the recession hit, business slowed and the company created just 26 new positions before the incentives expired in 2012 and then again in 2014. But after creating the enclosed cars for the 550-foot-tall Ferris wheel that overlooks the Las Vegas skyline, Leitner-Poma now is working on projects involving a people mover at Miami International Airport and the production of snow groomers as well, and it is bidding on other projects that could require it to ramp up its staff, CFO Bud Haupt told the EDC.

Vestas Wind Systems said it will build 149 of its V100-2.0 megawatt wind turbines for the Kingfisher Wind project in central Oklahoma, that when complete later this year will be capable of producing up to 298 megawatts of energy. That’s enough power to support the needs of about 100,000 homes, according to Apex Clean Energy, the project’s developer. Apex sold the project — which Apex estimated would cost $452 million to build — to First Reserve, an international private equity and infrastructure investment firm that focuses exclusively on energy projects.

Musk Expects To Sell Millions Of Cars By 2025 USA Today reports that Tesla CEO Elon Musk, speaking at an Automotive News conference in Detroit, “showed no lack of optimism Tuesday in predicting his company will be cranking out ‘a few million’ of its electric cars by 2025.” However, he “also didn’t indicate that Tesla is any hurry to make a profit under official accounting rules, predicting that it may not go into the black until 2020” when the mass-market Model 3 is expected to be released. The Detroit Free Press reports that if Tesla could hit that goal, that “would make the company about the size of BMW today.” Musk “also left the door open to eventually establish franchised dealerships.” Tesla “in 2014 made about 33,000 units of the Model S luxury electric car, its only vehicle, and expects 50% growth this year.
Intel Pledges $300 Million Toward Goal Of Increasing Work Force Diversity USA Today reports that Intel “has set an aggressive goal of dramatically increasing the diversity of its US workforce by 2020.” As part of the plan, the Mountain View, California chipmaker is “pledging $300 million to fund the hiring and retention of women and underrepresented minorities,” making this the “largest investment yet in diversity by a technology company.” The New York Times reports that Intel’s plan calls for increasing the ranks of women, blacks, Hispanics and other groups employed by the company “by at least 14 percent.” CEO Brian Krzanich said: “This is the right time to make a bold statement. ... We say we’re going to reinvent Silicon every two years even though we don’t really know how we’re going to pull that off.”

The Wall Street Journal cites Alcoa as reporting that fourth-quarter revenue increased 14% as the biggest US producer of aluminum continued to benefit from rising prices of the metal and strong demand from the automotive and aerospace industries. Alcoa reported a quarterly profit of $159 million, or 11 cents a share, swinging

US Trade Deficit Reaches 11-Month Low The AP reports the US trade deficit fell to an 11-month low in November to $39 billion thanks to a drop in crude oil imports, according to information from the Commerce Department. Exports fell 1 percent from October’s value thanks to a decline in the sales of commercial airliners. The reduction in foreign oil declines helped drop imports 2.2 percent from October’s value. Economists predict that the deficit will continue to rise in 2015 thanks to a strong US dollar that will help drive more imports. However, the same economists also predicted overall growth in 2015 will be stronger than in 2014.

The company recently purchased a Nordson DAGE X-ray electronics inspection machine. Julie says it uses the latest technology, flat panel detector to provide the first choice for high quality real time imaging in production. They additionally purchased the Genesis Series 2 - Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Pick and Place Series machine from Universal Systems. Long-term management team member Julie Moore says the Genesis Series 2 is particularly beneficial for CST’s medical, aerospace and defense customers who have mission-critical assemblies and often small form factors, due to its superior head technologies, traceability software, and superior 01005 capabilities. CST believes it is one of very few contract manufacturer in

In their panel-enclosed room, CST offers conformal coating. Coating material is applied to electronic circuitry to act as protection against moisture, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes CST Designs and Builds Fixtures To that, if uncoated (non-protected), Support their Customers could result in damage or failure of the electronics to function. When electronics must withstand harsh environments and added protection is necessary, CST coats assemblies with a layer of transparent conformal coating. CST also offers OSP (Organic Surface Protection). OSP is a solution to customers’ leadfree problem could sound this simple: Immerse a printed circuit board into a solution, and the result is a final surface that can be stored and soldered. In fact, such a thing does exist: a lead-free alternative to HAL (Hot Air Levelling) with these wonderful features, at least from the point of view of the PCB manufacturer. OSP is an organic solution based on an imidazole substitute which, by means of dipping or rinsing can be selectively applied to the copper surfaces, ready for soldering. A transparent layer, max. 0.2 to 0.6 my thick, covers the copper like a barely visible clear varnish.
CST Retains an Inventory for its customers and Utilizes Kan Ban to meet certain customers’ requirements
New Certifications CST has successfully supported customers all over the United States in the medical, aerospace, defense, energy, semiconductor and commercial industries. But it determined that to continue to expand its capabilities, it needed to certify to International standards. At the end of 2013, CST certified to ISO 13485:2003. This certification specifies requirements for a quality management system that is specific to companies manufacturing medical devices. They additionally certified to ISO 9001:2008. Unlike ISO 13485:2003 which is specific to medical devices, all requirements of ISO 9001:2008 are generic and are intended to be applicable to all organizations, regardless of type, size and product provided. Julie says that the company will add AS9100 certification, specific to the aerospace industry, to their list of certifications this year.

Air Force approves plan to expand bomber training airspace
B-52 bombers out of Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota would use the new zone.
The Air Force approved a plan that would quadruple the airspace to be used as a training area for pilots of B-1 and B-52 bombers.
Thune argued that the expansion would help Ellsworth avoid being shuttered under a future Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) round.
The new space over Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas would be the largest training space over the continental U.S. The decision was made over the objections of lawmakers such as Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), who argue the overhead sonic booms will wreak havoc on rural communities and frighten livestock. The proposal now goes to the Federal Aviation Administration, which will examine the expansion of the Powder River Training Complex (PRTC). “The expanded training airspace ... is critical to ensuring our airmen and women receive the training they need to protect and defend our nation abroad,” Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) said in a statement. “The Air Force has made the safety and security of those living within this training airspace its highest priority.” Daines said he and Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) would to introduce a bill to restrict Air Force training over the location of a proposed loading terminal for the Keystone XL oil pipeline in Baker, Mont. The Air Force projects that, by expanding the airspace, it could save up to $23 million a year in fuel costs by scaling back the number of flights pilots will have to make to Utah and Nevada for training exercises.
Elon Musk announces ‘space Internet’ plan Elon Musk, the billionaire technology entrepreneur, has announced plans for a space Internet project that would provide faster, cheaper access around the globe. The $15 billion plan would use hundreds of satellites placed 750 miles above the Earth, far lower than existing communications satellites. Doing so would speed up the transfer of data and give better coverage to three billion people who do not have it.The speed would be similar to that of fibre optic cables on land even given the distance the data
Announcements
has to travel between the satellites and Earth. Mr Musk told Bloomberg Businessweek: “The speed of light is 40 per cent faster in the vacuum of space than it is for fibre. The long-term potential is to be the primary means of long-distance Internet traffic and to serve people in sparsely populated areas.
Industrial Rotary Surface Grinders
“Our focus is on creating a global communications system that would be larger than anything that has been talked about to date.” Mr Musk announced the project at the opening of new offices in Seattle for SpaceX, his rocket company that has a contract to supply the International Space Station. The billionaire said he will have 60 people working on the space Internet project initially and that could rise to 1,000 in a few years. The project would also form the basis of a communications system with Mars if Mr Musk is able to achieve his stated ambition of establishing a human colony there. He said: “It will be important for Mars to have a global communications network as well. I think this needs to be done, and I don’t see anyone else doing it.” He said it could take at least five years to get the first satellites ready. Sir Richard Branson is already investing in a project called OneWeb which hopes to put up 648 micro satellites to provide highspeed Internet and telephone services from space. Sir Richard has said it will be “the world’s largest-ever satellite network.”

The OneWeb plan would see satellites placed in orbit by LauncherOne, a vehicle being built by Sir Richard’s Virgin Galactic. Sir Richard said “I don’t think Elon can do a competing thing. There isn’t space for another network, like there physically is not enough space. If Elon wants to get into this area the logical thing for him would be to tie up with us.” Speaking on US television, Sir Richard said small satellites could now be built at a fraction of the cost of a decade ago. He said: “The quantity of satellites will enable us to drive the cost down to an incredibly competitive level. We can literally take off every three or four hours. “Imagine the possibilities for the three billion people in hard-toreach areas who are currently not connected.” Other big players in the race to provide worldwide Internet from the sky include Google. It is pursing Project Loon which would deliver access to remote areas using hot air balloons. Meanwhile, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is exploring giant drones, satellites, and lasers as delivery methods.

Boeing posts record year; commercial deliveries up 12 percent Boeing ended 2014 with records in commercial airplane deliveries and net orders. The company said that it delivered 723 jetliners, a nearly 12 percent increase from 648 deliveries in 2013. Boeing said commercial airplane deliveries in 2014 were its most ever in a single year. The company also said its sales team booked 1,423 net orders, valued at nearly $233 billion at list prices. Its net orders in 2014 broke a previous all-time high of 1,413 set in 2007. Boeing said deliveries of the 737 led all of its jetliner deliveries for the year, at 485, followed by deliveries of its newest airplane, the 787, at 114. Boeing said it delivered 99 777s for the year, six 767s and 19 747s. Boeing has enjoyed a relatively long run of increased orders for its commercial passenger jets as emerging markets develop their air travel industries and U.S. airlines move to modernize their fleets. The company said that, in 2015, it expects to begin assembly of its first
737 MAX and establish a firm configuration for its 777X. Stern Agee analyst Peter Arment said in an interview that Boeing had “very strong execution” on airplane deliveries in 2014 and expects “another strong year” in 2015. He’s forecasting that Boeing will deliver 762 jets in 2015, which would be a 5 percent increase from 2014. Robert Mann, an airline industry analyst and consultant, said Boeing is benefiting from airlines’ “historic” double-digit profit margins. And the airlines are using some of those profits to buy newer and more fuel-efficient jetliners. “I’ve been doing this for almost 40 years, and I’ve never seen anything like it,” Mann said of the industry’s profit margins. Spirit AeroSystems builds parts of all Boeing’s jetliners, including the 737 fuselage and the forward, or cockpit, section of the 767, 777 and 787.
JPL Competing In DARPA Robotics Challenge With Non Human-Like Robot The Washington Post reports on the efforts to develop robots that can take on the “difficult” task of working in areas too hazardous for people, such as disaster sites like that at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant site. UCLA roboticist Dennis Hong, who glimpsed the devastation of the plant up close, is “one of several engineers working to make robots that can come to the rescue in disasters.” Hong and “others from academia, industry, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab and the Defense Department’s research agency DARPA traveled to Fukushima last spring to see what they were up against.” Hong said the “take-home message was ‘Wow, it’s damn difficult.’” DARPA launched its DARPA Robotics Challenge to help promote this development. JPL’s Brett Kennedy said, “Someday, it would be
really cool to have a robot that does everything a fireman can do....burst through the door, save the baby, the whole nine yards.”

Major defense companies likely to pursue M&A for growth in 2015, experts predict Major defense contractors are likely to look to M&A in 2015 to grow shareholder value as the U.S. approaches the seventh year of slow military spending, experts predict. “If the companies in ‘13 were frozen by sequestration and weren’t moving, the mood last year was the beginning of ‘I can’t afford to be frozen, I need to start doing something or at least start thinking about it,’ “ said Pierre Chao, managing partner at Renaissance Strategic Advisors. Employers Add 252,000 Jobs In December, Including 17,000 In Manufacturing McClatchy reported on last month’s Labor Department data showing that US employers added 252,000 jobs in December, along with a combined 50,000 more in October and November than the government had previously forecast, pushing down the nation’s unemployment rate to 5.6% from 5.8% – its lowest level since 2008.The numbers for the final month of 2014 “stamped an exclamation mark on the best performance in 15 years for job creation,” McClatchy said while noting, however, that “the wages of millions of Americans continued to stagnate.”

2016 Budget To Bring U-2 Stay Of Execution The Pentagon is, once again, reversing its own position on which platform to use for its high-altitude reconnaissance mission – the venerable U-2 or Global Hawk unmanned aircraft. The Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) has directed the U.S. Air Force to restart modest funding not only for operations of the high-flying U-2, but also to invest some funding in research and development and procurement, according to industry sources. The roughly $150 million in investment spending over three years is a signal that last year’s proposal to retire the U-2 fleet and quickly transfer the high-altitude collection mission to the unmanned Northrop Grumman RQ-4B Global Hawk was a bridge too far. It shows that the service will not only operate the fleet it has, but pay for upgrades to keep the U-2 relevant. In addition, funding for U-2 operations will be restored for three more years – fiscal 2016-18, the sources say. Though operations at the height of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars ran about $400 million annually, the service is now targeting about $350 million a year to operate the U-2 globally. A congressional staffer says keeping the U-2 and Global Hawk will “please everyone” on Capitol Hill. Less than three years ago, the Air Force offered up Global Hawk for termination; the plan was to kill the Block 30 version of the aircraft. This is the variant capable of collecting imagery as well as conducting radar and signals intelligence. The Block 40 aircraft, outfitted with a large radar to monitor ground traffic, was expected to be next up for the ax once the Block 30 termination was approved. Google Aims To Get Self-Driving Cars On Road In Around Five Years Bloomberg News reports that Google “sees fielding a self-driving car on public roads in the U.S. within about five years without having to seek permission from regulators.” Google self-driving car director Chris Urmson said at the Detroit auto show, “We think we’re within a couple of years, probably within five years.” He added that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration “could certainly reactively ban it, but we don’t think that they need to grant permission ahead of time.”
Equipment Leasing and Finance Industry Confidence Reaches Three-Year High The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation releases the January 2015 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) . Designed to collect leadership data, the index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $903 billion equipment finance sector. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market is 66.1, an increase from the December index of 63.4 and the highest level in the last three years. When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI-EFI survey respondent Thomas Jaschik, President, BB&T Equipment Finance, said, “With third quarter GDP in excess of 5 percent, the economy is primed for a surge in capital equipment spending. I believe domestic companies now have the confidence to make substantial investments in plant and equipment to facilitate growth. This could lead to a record year for equipment finance in 2015.” January 2015 Survey Results: The overall MCI-EFI is 66.1, an increase from the December index of 63.4. • When asked to assess their business conditions over the next four months, 23.3% of executives responding said they believe
business conditions will improve over the next four months. • 20% of survey respondents believe demand for leases and loans to fund capital expenditures (capex) will increase over the next four months. 80% believe demand will “remain the same” during the same four-month time period, up from 72% the previous month.

Pentagon Said to Seek Funds for 57 Lockheed F35s, Up From 55 The Pentagon will request funding in fiscal 2016 to buy 57 F-35 jets made by Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT), two more than previously planned, according to two government officials. The Defense Department’s previous five-year plan had projected buying 55 of the fighter jets during the year that begins Oct. 1, said the officials. If approved by lawmakers, the acquisition would mark a major increase for a program that’s experienced cuts amid tight defense budgets and setbacks in testing of the costliest U.S. weapons system.
The Pentagon had requested 34 of the jets for the current year, and Congress increased that to 38. The projected budget for 55 aircraft was $9 billion; the added cost for two more planes wasn’t immediately available. The F-35 represents 17 percent of sales for Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed, the largest U.S. defense contractor. Pentagon officials have said they would do as much as they could to protect the aircraft from the automatic budget cuts known as sequestration. Those cuts will resume in fiscal 2016 unless they’re eased or overturned by Congress and the president. The further the F-35 advances, the stronger Senate support becomes “because you’ve got more invested in it,” former Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin told reporters in September. The Ogden School District and theYMCA of Northern Utah this week are introducing new after-school programs for K-12 students that focus on STEM academic assistance and career exploration — the first time that YMCA programs have been offered to high school students in the area. Even for Utahns already in the workforce, there are opportunities to ramp up their skills. Instructure, a Utah-based technology company specializing in online learning, recently began partnering with Salt Lake Community College to provide supplemental training for its employees. Whatever the age or experience of the student, Utah school officials are hopeful that supplemental instruction will mean success for students and sustainability for businesses, said Karen Gunn, associate provost of economic development and business partnerships at Salt lake Community College. “That is our goal,” Gunn said. “It’s really critical to ensure that if we’re trying to recruit companies to the state, that they know they have a skill-ready workforce at varying levels, regardless of whether it’s a post-secondary certificate of completion, all the way up to the advanced degree level.” Filling in blanks Logan Allen, STEM program manager forYMCA in Weber County, said STEM Hub programs help students discover interest in current and upcoming careers, such as aircraft mechanics at Hill Air Force Base, a major employer in the county. “Right now, there’s a huge boom in STEM careers here in Utah,” Allen said. “Unfortunately, we’re having to outsource those jobs outside of the state, so it’s important to address STEM with high school students as soon as possible so we can start getting them interested and into the workforce as soon as possible.” The programs began tlast month at Ogden and Ben Lomond high schools; Mound Fort Junior High School; and T.O. Smith, James Madison, Dee and Gramercy elementary schools. Ogden Mayor Mike Caldwell said providing early support for students in STEM subjects is “absolutely critical” to ensuring their achievement in college and eventual employment. “There’s a real direct path if you have a STEM education to go from graduating to being very highly sought-after,” Caldwell said. “We need to build an ecosystem of support for students if we hope to have a competitive advantage.”

Program coordinators work to determine the needs of each school to help students in STEM coursework and to develop a program that includes tutoring, hands-on activities and support for at-risk youth, Allen said. “We’ve met with principals one-on-one and explained the STEM Hub model and basically asked them to fill in the blanks to help us understand what social services or academic help their students might need,” he said. Some programs offer extended after-school hours for students, including dinner, according to Ogden School District spokesman Zac Williams, who said that all programs are open enrollment. “The programs are ready to take students where they are and enhance their education in STEM subjects, and that’s a big reason that we’re instituting them,”Williams said. “It also allows students who might not have other productive outlets during that time of day. It allows them to be at school and be involved in these activities.”
Still, some come with less-than-sufficient abilities. “There are some specific skills or knowledge base that we don’t always find in the people we hire,” Weber said. “This workshop with Salt Lake Community College can help us address those things.” Such training could range from computer automation skills, to management, to basic workplace communication. And being able to prepare customized local instruction on a quick timeframe saves critical time and money, Weber said. “I think it will certainly help,” he said. “It’s much more cost-effective and efficient than sending someone off to a training course somewhere else.” Such courses are common at the college. Each year, about 130 companies train their employees — about 3,500 last year — through the college, according to Gunn. Of those companies, about 40 percent deal with STEM occupations.
Parents whose children attend a participating school can enroll their students by completing a registration form and submitting it to the school’s front office.
In addition to workforce training programs, the college offers shortterm intensive programs for individuals who need to be more “work ready” quickly, Gunn said. Companies and the college often share the cost of equipment in order to build infrastructure for future programs.
Becoming work ready Instructure is one of many companies looking to out-of-state applicants to fill needed positions. Of the past 50 technology positions hired by Instructure, about half of them were given to people from outside Utah, Vice President Jeff Weber said during an education workforce alliance summit last month.
It’s a partnership that translates into qualified workers.“That’s a real value add that we bring to employers in being able to offer a nimbleness and responsiveness in the immediate while helping them plan how they want to use educational reimbursement tools or help support tuition of their employees over the long term,” Gunn said.Source: Deseret News A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

APY-9 radar system among its standout capabilities. Northrop Grumman describes Hawkeye’s radar technology, improved data processing and communications as not just next generation, but a two-generation jump ahead. These advances give warfighters the ability to see more targets at much further distances.Warfighters will receive better data more quickly, which means that they can now find out about and engage threats faster. How will this “digital quarterback” be used? The Hawkeye can be deployed for a range of tasks, from missile defense to border security. It will be key for time-critical threats. Hawkeye’s combined capabilities are a big advantage in defending and protecting U.S. forces in coastal areas and on land. Its excellent sensor data, battle space situational awareness, and connectivity to other airborne assets make this aircraft ideal for coordinating air strikes against hostile targets. For forces operating in littoral environments — or those that are part of bodies of water like a river or the ocean – safe access is crucial. The more common these advanced cruise missiles become, the more a solution like Hawkeye becomes important.
An airborne battle manager, the Hawkeye can operate from forward-deployed aircraft carriers. In a scenario where adversaries suddenly gain possession of missiles, the Hawkeye can detect the threat and use FORCEnet communications to notify an Aegis missile cruiser of a launched threat. Aegis then receives ongoing continuous data to help it destroy the missile. The aircraft system can help exactly locate and identify an adversary’s launch system. It does so by simultaneously collaborating with various assets like satellite surveillance. This versatile quarterback could also direct an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), or drone. X-Plane The longtime hunt for the ultimate military hybrid – part helicopter, part airplane – may finally be over.

DARPA has been pursuing the development of the “VTOL X-Plane,” which would give the military unprecedented capabilities. TheVTOL X plane is basically a helicopter mashed up with an airplane. Helicopters, with the ability to take off and land without an airstrip (otherwise known as VTOL, or Vertical Take Off and Landing) give the military access to areas that fixedwing aircraft can’t reach. But fixed-wing aircraft provide better speed and range.

DARPA announced that the competition to build the X Plane has been narrowed down to a final four companies – Aurora Flight Sciences,The Boeing Company, Karem Aircraft, and Sikorsky Aircraft. All have proposed designs for an unmanned X-Plane. While all in their conceptual stages, each of these designs and new technologies could ultimately revolutionize manned aircraft, too. VTOL X-Plane challenges the teams to create one single hybrid aircraft that incorporates significant improvements in vertical and cruise flight capabilities. The final four designs all leverage new multipurpose technologies. Developing technology that can do more than one thing is a smart approach – the aircraft will need fewer systems to operate.
Would this X-Plane be better than all the rest? DARPA hopes so.The VTOL X-Plane will have a number of impressive capabilities. The X-Plane project aims to provide an aircraft that can fly as fast as 460 mph, take off and land vertically, and hover efficiently. This would happen all while the plane hauls crates of heavy cargo. Current VTOLs, like the tilt-rotor V-22 Osprey, are used operationally and give the military the option to land just about anywhere at relatively fast speeds. But the Osprey can reach only about 322 mph. The plane’s lift-to-drag ratio — or the amount of lift generated by a wing or vehicle, divided by the drag it creates by moving through the air DARPA plans to invest $130 million to get the first X-Plane soaring in early 2018. Colorado VC deal value in Q4 is the best since 2001 Colorado tallied $342 million in venture capital deals in the fourth quarter, the state’s best quarter since the fourth quarter of 2001, according to the latest MoneyTree report released last month. For the full year, Colorado recorded 86VC deals valued at $793 million, up nearly 71 percent from $464.5 million in 2013, said the MoneyTree report by PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC) and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), based on data from Thomson Reuters.

“It’s the best quarter we’ve had since 2001, and that’s extremely exciting,” said Keith Parsons, assurance partner in PwC’s Denver office. “One of the interesting things is the size of the deals. We’re seeing some very large deals.” The largest deal in the fourth quarter and for the year in Colorado was a $59.9 million expansion stage investment in Boulder-based data storage technology firm Solidfire Inc., according to PwC. “The larger deals are being done in the later and expansion stages, for companies with a product on the market or ready to go to market,” Parsons said. “There’s less risk with a proven technology.” He attributes the strong VC activity last year to the fact that “there’s a really good exit market out there. The IPO (initial public offering) market has been the best we’ve seen in a number of years. And there’s still a lot of capital out there to invest.” Software investments led all sectors in Colorado in 2014, with $222 million worth of deals last year. VC investments in the industrial/energy sector in Colorado in 2014 were up 17 percent year-over-year to $90.1 million. But VC activity in that sector is likely to fall this year, thanks to the steep decline in oil prices. “I think that there is going to be a little bit of a downturn with energy and industrial companies, whether it’s oil and gas or renewables,” Parsons said. “But I do think that will be a short-term impact.” Nationally, venture capitalists invested $48.3 billion in 4,356 deals in 2014, an increase of 61 percent in dollars and a 4 percent increase in

Americans Said To Prefer Solar, Wind Power Contributor Jeff McMahon writes at Forbes about a presentation at the University of Chicago by Harvard professor Stephen Ansolabehere on the data he has gathered from surveying Americans on their energy preferences for 12 years. He found that, “Americans want to move away from coal, oil and nuclear power and toward wind and solar.” He said that the preference was so strong that it overwhelms “the partisan divide” as “about 80 percent” support a large increase in solar and wind power, and another 10 percent “want it to increase somewhat.” He concludes that few Americans support an “all of the above” energy policy, though “Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz still routinely uses the phrase” in describing the Administration’s policy. Ansolabehere said that Americans take this approach because they “think of solar and wind as relatively harmless, coal oil and nuclear as harmful and natural gas as somewhere in between.” In addition, they believe that solar and wind power are less expensive. Vestas gets SunEdison wind turbine order; company expected to top 2013 orders Vestas Wind Systems A/S says it has a new 60 megawatt order from SunEdison Inc. for wind turbine equipment. It’s part of a new “master supply agreement” or MSA with Maryland Heights, Missouri-based SunEdison that has a potential for more turbines generating as much as 600 MW, Vestas said. Under such longer-term deals, Vestas and a customer agree to terms on possible future orders, but those orders are not definite. “The turbines in the new MSA will be deployed at various projects that are currently being developed,” Vestas said. The fact that the order was placed before the end of the year means that wind farms that use the equipment will qualify for the federal Production Tax Credit on wind-generated power, which is set to expire tonight.Wind power industry executives and clean-energy advocates will push the new Congress to restore the credit. The SunEdison order is for wind turbine equipment for both the Vestas 2MW and 3MW turbines, Vestas said. The Danish company has four factories in Colorado. It did not say which plants will get work under the new order. By one estimate, a 1 MW turbine on land can provide enough electricity to power 225 to 300 households. In another U.S. order announced recently,Vestas said EDF Renewable Energy has ordered 75 V100 2 MW turbines under an existing MSA, bring the total turbines ordered under that deal to 1,094 MW. Overall, Vestas has announced 413 MW worth of worldwide turbine orders in the last three days for a 2014 total of 5,864 MW, leaving it just shy of 2013’s 5,964 megawatts of orders, with the likelihood of A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Astronauts close to moving into space station for year An American astronaut and Russian cosmonaut are just two months shy of launching to the International Space Station for an entire year. Already, though, scientists are clamoring for additional long-term subjects. Two people are not enough from a scientific perspective, NASA’s space station program scientist, Julie Robinson, said Thursday. The space agency wants to start collecting data from Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko before making any firm decisions on further one-year missions, she said. NASA and its partners - Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada - are considering as many as 12 one-year test subjects at the space station. All but Russia are new to such long orbital hauls. Space veterans in their 50s, Kelly and Kornienko will rocket into orbit in late March from Kazakhstan and remain aboard the space station until the following March. It will be the first time NASA sends someone into space for 12 months; station stints typically last six months. The Russians are old pros at this, but medical and technological breakthroughs since Russia’s yearlong missions from the 1980s and 1990s means even more will be learned this time around, according to Robinson. The two sides will collaborate on many of the experiments. NASA wants to learn how the body fares after a year in space, before committing to lengthy trips to Mars and elsewhere.Right now, it’s a big question mark as to what happens beyond six months in orbit. “What we don’t know right now is what that six- to 12-month period looks like,” Robinson told reporters. “We’re talking about it scientifically, but we’re not really having deep discussions about it until we have the first information from the first two. If we see something dramatic, that’s going to change how everybody looks at having additional oneyear missions.” Kelly will provide an especially unique set of data. His blood and urine
samples, as well as other measurements, will be compared with those from his identical twin brother, Mark, a retired astronaut. Space station program manager Mike Suffredini said NASA may wait until commercially developed crew capsules are ready to launch astronauts from U.S. soil, before building on Kelly and Kornienko’s flight. That won’t happen before 2017 or 2018. SpaceX and Boeing are the two chosen contractors. Since the retirement of the U.S. space shuttle fleet in 2011, Russian Soyuz spacecraft have served as the only means to ferry crew to and from the space station.
ViaSat taps SpaceX for satellite launch Operator ViaSat has hired Elon Musk’s SpaceX to launch its new high capacity ViaSat-2 Internet satellite in 2016. SpaceX, a privately held builder of rockets that supply the International Space Station under a contract with NASA, will use its biggest rocket, the Falcon Heavy, to put ViaSat-2 into orbit. The Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest launch vehicle — the Falcon 9 — at one-third the cost. The launch will take place from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with a launch window running from August through October next year, said Bruce Rowe, a ViaSat spokesman. Asked why ViaSat chose SpaceX, Rowe said one reason is ViaSat Chief Executive Mark Dankberg “thinks they are like us. They are
trying to do stuff nobody has done before.” Besides SpaceX, Musk also heads Tesla Motors, which makes all-electric luxury cars. About four years ago, ViaSat transformed itself from a sleepy maker of communications equipment into a satellite operator with the ViaSat-1. The company used a novel design to offer much faster speeds to Internet subscribers. The company’s Exede service provides 12 megabits per second download speeds starting at $50 a month. Launched in late 2011 from Kazakhstan, ViaSat-1 powers 657,000 residential Internet subscribers today. With 140 gigabits of total capacity, it’s also the backbone behind fast in-flight Wi-Fi on about 300 JetBlue and United Airlines commercial jets. Exede has monthly data usage caps on many of its service plans, however. That has been a drawback for potential subscribers who want to play online games or download movies. ViaSat-2 uses a new architecture to get more capacity and broader geographic coverage than ViaSat-1. The company says the new satellite will not only serve North America but also Central America and the Caribbean. In addition, the satellite will provide a bridge of coverage across the North Atlantic, connecting North America with Europe for in-flight Wi-Fi and other mobile services. ViaSat-2 also will have twice the bandwidth economics of ViaSat-1, the company said. “One of the primary objectives for ViaSat-2, beyond higher speeds, is to offer more data with all of our service plans,” said Dankberg in a statement. “We can do that by building
a network with lots more network capacity at a cost that will attract more customers, and that’s what this new class of satellite is designed to do.” ViaSat hired Boeing to build its $350 million satellite. The cost for ViaSat-2, including construction, launch, insurance, equipment and other expenses, is $625 million.
Stronger Supply Chains Deemed Crucial To US Manufacturing Growth Writing in IndustryWeek, National Mining Association President and CEO Hal Quinn and Reshoring Initiative founder Harry Moser assert that amid the nation’s current “manufacturing renaissance,” during which industry titans have moved operations back to these shores, “U.S. manufacturers are seriously concerned about how the supply of minerals and metals can impact the success of their businesses.” As the US regains manufacturing prominence, “the need for strong, stable supply chains” of critical minerals and metals becomes more acute, Quinn and Moser wrote, noting that although this country has $6.2 trillion worth of such materials in reserve, US manufacturers are highly dependent on foreign sources. While praising the House of Representatives’ passage of legislation to improve permitting of minerals mines, the writers urged the incoming Congress and President Obama “to collaborate and take the necessary actions to ensure the success of our domestic manufacturers and keep our economy growing.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper used the State Address to call out Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. (LMSS) for its role in the engineering of the Orion spacecraft, a test version of which launched last month. And the company also serves as an example of the most overarching policy theme of the governor’s speech:The need for more workforce training programs. LMSS — a unit of aerospace and defense giant Lockheed Martin Corp. — is headquartered in Jefferson County. Both LMSS and its parent company have extensive operations in metro Denver and Colorado Springs. In 2013, Lockheed discussed with state leaders its need for a rapid-hiring process as it expands locally. Company leaders knew that military veterans had the skills and character they sought, and they wanted an opportunity to tap into that population, said Richard Toya, Lockheed electronics manufacturing supervisor.

The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, which already had a mission to prioritize employment for returning veterans, marketed Lockheed’s openings and recruited and interviewed veterans that came through a training program it had established. Those who were interested enrolled at Blackfox Technical Institute in Longmont, where they then had a pipeline to working for Lockheed,Toya explained. Lockheed also provided a trainer to follow the veterans through school and through their first year of employment with the company, to ensure Factories ‘Reshore’ Some Work From they could work through any issues the new employees might have, Toya said. About 30 employees have come through that partnership so far.
