Is finding superior employees for your organization one of your top challenges? If you answered ‘yes’, you are in the same position as many employers in the USA. According to a recent Enterprise Bank andTrust survey, 80 percent of respondents said recruitment was among their top three challenges.
So, given this data, do you and your management team offer formal/ documented benefits that include a flexible workplace? If you answered yes, you should be pleased that you work in a progressive company, one that has the ability to attract the brightest and best talent. You already have a substantial advantage over many of your competitors. Another survey conducted by Fractl found that, after health insurance, employees place the highest value on benefits that are relatively low-cost to employers, such as flexible hours, more paid vacation time, and work-from-home options. Furthermore, the survey found that certain benefits could win over some job seekers faced with higher-paying offers that come with fewer additional advantages. Both flexible hours and work-from-home arrangements are affordable perks for companies that want to offer appealing benefits — and both of these benefits typically cost the employer nothing — and often save money by lowering overhead costs. When flexible programs are not offered, managers often cite ‘lack of jobs that are conducive to flexibility’. If I ran a company in virtually any industry, I would suggest that this manager needs some ‘enlightenment opportunities’ in order to remain in his or her position. Many of our readers are employed in the manufacturing industry, and while ‘work from home’ options may not be feasible, flexible hours and part time options certainly are. Consider the benefits of phased retirement, where your long term workers no longer wish to work full time, but are enthusiastic to work 2 or 3 days a week. This arrangement can reduce health benefits for the employee, and it offers your company the best mentoring opportunities for new employees. Flexible working or ‘Flex jobs’ not only means you have access to a much larger pool of talent for your team, it is good for business. In a study by WorldatWork, 2/3 of respondents to a management survey stated that ‘flexibility has a positive or extremely positive impact on employee engagement, motivation and satisfaction’. In Ernst & Young’s Global Generations Research, findings indicate that, amongst other generations, Millenials want job flexibility, but in their words, ‘bosses just don’t get it.’ In their study, close to 80 percent of millenials surveyed are part of dual-income couples. Of Generation X workers, people in their 30s and 40s now, 73 percent are. But of baby boomers, the generation that now occupies most top management positions, less than 1/2 have a full-time working spouse. “I really see that there’s an empathy gap in the workplace,” said Karyn Twaronite, EY global-diversity and inclusiveness officer. “When there’s frustration about work-life balance in the workplace, and you think your boss doesn’t get it, that very likely could be true. ” For employers considering the adoption of flexible work, the benefits of allowing employees to work a flexible schedule are numerous. From increased productivity to fewer missed days, employers reap the benefits that come from adopting flexible schedules in the workplace. Such benefits include; productivity increases, decreased absenteeism, and healthier, happier employees. In closing, I highly encourage you to formalize programs that include workforce flexibility. You will likely see immediate benefits, and your ability to recruit and retain top talent will lead to increased profitability. Until next issue, I wish you the best and God Bless our Troops!

“In 2017 about 170,000 United States manufacturing jobs were announced to come back from offshore, up 2,800 percent from 2010,” says Harry Moser, founder and president of the Reshoring Initiative. “We anticipate that this award will motivate more companies to reevaluate their offshoring and see that it is often more profitable to produce or source domestically. We also hope that other associations will choose to support similar awards to show that their industries are now successfully reshoring.” Source: Modern Machine Shop; By: Tarah Rauch

We expect that each of the participants will develop new initiatives or expand on those already in place to advance their manufacturing agenda.” The year-long Policy Academy will guide the states through a planning and implementation process to identify relevant manufacturing-related partnerships and policies to move their economic development strategies forward. Each participant will receive customized assistance through access to national experts and collaboration with colleagues in other states. They may choose to focus on addressing skills gaps, accelerating start-up growth, expanding their market, improving their supply chain or other priorities the state teams identify. The Policy Academy is being coordinated by two national organizations — SSTI and the Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness (CREC) – with support from the Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) based at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). SSTI works to strengthen initiatives to create a better future through science, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship. CREC works to provide policy-makers from around the world with the information and technical assistance they need to formulate and execute innovative, regional, job-creating economic strategies. More than four in five firms in the industry are raising wages or boosting signing bonuses, according to a survey of about 400 executives by Deloitte LLP and the Manufacturing Institute, part of the National Association of Manufacturers. More than two-thirds said compensation had a moderate to very high impact on retention, while 32 percent said it had low or no impact. Raises are showing up in U.S. data: October marked the first month of annual wage gains above 3 percent since 2009. There are nearly half a million job openings in manufacturing, even after a strong pace of hiring that’s added almost that many to payrolls over the past two years, Labor Department data show. Pay raises should help to attract and retain people as the hiring pool shrinks. A majority of executives said talent availability was a key issue, with many blaming shifting skill sets and negative views of the manufacturing industry. Despite the labor shortage, just over half of executives sur veyed said workers should pay for their own retraining. At the same time, about three-quarters of respondents said industry associations should sponsor training for jobs facing the most serious talent shortages, and 69 percent of respondents said companies should fund the costs. It’s still unclear when Tesla will begin producing the Semi, which the company unveiled last year. CEO Elon Musk had suggested the first Semis would begin rolling off the assembly line in 2019, and ramp up production in 2020. That uncertain timeline hasn’t stopped dozens of companies from putting down a minimum of $20,000 per truck to get on Tesla’s pre-order list. Albertson’s likely paid at least $200,000 to pre-order 10 trucks. On a conference call in May, Musk said the company had pulled in around 2,000 preorders for the new truck, which would mean around $40 million in revenue on the low end. “We haven’t really tried to sell the Semi. ...Orders for the Semi are like, opportunistic,” Musk said on the call, according to Car and Driver magazine. “It’s just not something we really think about much.” Other early Semi backers include Albertsons customers

Manufacturing Skill Levels Show Signs of Improvement For the first time in almost two decades, manufacturing skill assessment scores are improving. It indicates that the skills gap could be closing.
“For the first three quarters of 2018, assessment scores have increased in 38 states,” says Stephen Berry, CEO of Scientific Management Techniques, a company that specializes in manufacturing skill assessments and training. “Should the data remain at this level for the balance of the year, this will mark the first time in 19 years that average assessment scores have increased in two out of three consecutive years.” After trending in a narrow range for 28 years, manufacturing skill assessment scores began a prolonged decline in 1999. “Given the current state of the manufacturing workforce, our clients are hiring more entry-level staff today than any other time in the last 46 years,” claims Berry. “The manufacturing skills shortage has driven an increased demand for the ability to identify mechanical aptitude in [job candidates who] have no prior training or manufacturing experience. “Individuals possessing mechanical aptitude assimilate training efficiently and become productive members of the workforce quickly,” Berry points out. Ford Buys Electric Scooter Company Spin Ford Motor Co. has purchased Spin, an electric scooter sharing company based in San Francisco, for a reported $80 million to $90 million. “The acquisition of Spin is the latest strategic move by Ford in the mobility space, as the company builds a mobility portfolio to help customers get places more easily, more quickly and less expensively,” Ford said in a statement. Spin, which started in March 2017, has operations across 13 cities and campuses nationwide. The purchase price was between $80 million and $90 million, according to reports. “Over the next few years, we plan to scale quickly across hundreds of U.S. markets, including large metropolises, mid-sized cities and college campuses,” Spin’s founders said in a statement, adding that “we are immediately scaling up Spin’s team of engineers, designers, urban planners, policy makers, lawyers, and operators to create a affordable, convenient and sustainable form of last mile transportation.”

National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) released the results of their Outlook Survey earlier this month, and while optimism was high among the 718 manufacturers of all sizes who responded, there was one overriding concern: the possibility of a “full-blown workforce crisis.” Solving the problem before it reaches “full-blown crisis” mode is imperative for maximizing the potential created by growth in the manufacturing industry. The shortage of skilled laborers in manufacturing is, in many ways, a direct result of the sector’s success over the past year. September 2018 showed a 3.5 percent increase in output from the year prior and the NAM report shows that 92.5 percent of those surveyed anticipate positive developments for their company while 58 percent anticipate they will be hiring more workers over the next year. A skills-gap issue has already hit manufacturing, but as the industry continues to expand and unemployment remains low, the problem is exacerbated. Meanwhile, manufacturing finds itself competing for the best employees with a lot of other sectors in the supply chain, shrinking the pool of qualified applicants and increasing wages. As a result, 28.4 percent of the companies in NAM’s survey
claimed they had to turn down new business because of a shortage of workers. Turning down work is the last thing a business of any size wants to do, so filling the estimated 500,000 available manufacturing jobs is a must. One of the simplest ways to increase the amount of skilled workers is by training existing employees. Upskilling workers who are already successful provides them with upward mobility, inspiring them to stay on staff while also freeing up entry-level jobs for less skilled workers. Outreach programs and vocational education takes a bit more effort but is ultimately rewarding. Developing training programs at high schools and community colleges attracts a new generation of workers who may not have even considered a career in manufacturing. These students are shown that they can make a good living by learning the right skills and are ready to enter the workforce highly skilled. Veteran hiring programs are another potential source of qualified employees. In August 2018, the veteran unemployment rate was 3.8 percent, meaning there is an abundance of workers ready to learn new skills who are more than deserving of a chance. Set a budget, develop a strategy, find skilled workers, and get the satisfaction of giving back to those who served the country. Surely, having such a successful year that there aren’t enough workers to fuel expansion isn’t the worst problem an industry could have but impediments on growth is problematic. By using some creative thinking in the hiring process, those in the manufacturing industry could be headed for an even more successful 2019. Boss Magazine; By: Matthew Flynn

This growth in participation is reflective of the strength of the sector and the ongoing need to recruit a new generation of skilled workers to fill open positions. NTMA and PMA continued their long-standing support for the national day dedicated to building awareness. Members of both associations opened their doors for tours and participated in other educational and inspirational events. For example, members of the NWPA Chapter of NTMA joined in a local event which hosted over 2,000 students, parents, educators and community members. Colorado Manufacturing By The Numbers: Takeaways From 2018 And A Peek At 2019
second only to food manufacturing as the top manufacturing industry.
I’ve been fortunate to participate in CU Leeds’ excellent Colorado Business Economic Outlook the past two years, parsing manufacturing data with capable economists and business stakeholders lined up by Richard Wobbekind’s team at the Business Research Division. The 54th annual Report will be presented December 10 at the Grand Hyatt in Denver.
Readers have asked why we feature so many food and beverage companies, and growth in these industries reveals why. Food is today the single largest manufacturing industry in Colorado supporting just over 23,000 jobs. We track the sector as Food & Beverage, and total employment in those two sectors exceeds 30,000.
Here’s a first look at where manufacturing is forecast to end up in 2018 with a peek at ‘19, and what the numbers say about the state of Colorado manufacturing as this incredible economic year winds down. (The primary source of the following data is the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.)
The 2018 employment numbers are on track to be the highest since 2006, basically reaching pre-Great Recession numbers. But even at that point, manufacturing was on a long and precipitous employment fall, bottoming out in 2010 at 124,000.
Manufacturing industries outpacing the overall sector’s steady but modest growth in 2018 include Transportation Equipment at 2.8% -- a category that includes Colorado’s robust aviation and aerospace industries; Beverage and Tobacco manufacturing (not be to confused with cannabis) at 3.6%; and the aforementioned Computer & Electronics sector at 3.6%. It seems a strong overall economy is helping print media hold on: a 1% dip seems relatively healthy given the disruptions in media.
In 2000, manufacturing sustained nearly 188,000 jobs in Colorado, fueled by a lively Computer & Electronics category (recall the technology corridor in Boulder/Broomfield) that alone supported nearly 47,000 employees. Today, Computer & Electronics is enjoying a comeback of sorts in Colorado, growing to 22,500 jobs and forecast to exceed 23,000 total jobs in 2019,
The 2018 numbers tell a fascinating story. For starters, while Colorado’s manufacturing standalone contribution is relatively modest (just under $25 billion, or about 7% of state GDP), contrary
Manufacturing is growing modestly in 2018 but faster than forecast in the report last year, with total employment expected to rise 2.8% by year’s end to 147,000 jobs, adjusted from a nearflat projection of 1.1%. The initial forward-looking forecast calls for 2% growth in 2019, to roughly 150,000 jobs.

to a prevalent narrative, it’s growing. Jobs were to have been replaced by automated operations by now. But as CU’s Brian Lewandowski has noted in CompanyWeek, “With the multiplier effect, direct industry activity supports a total of 441,000 jobs in the state, and contributes approximately $47 billion to state GDP.” And only this week, the Economic Development Council of Colorado pointed to a new study and suggested the state is “poised to grow its manufacturing industry.” But it’s growth industries here that hold so much promise, not only in leading employment gains, but in redefining the narrative around manufacturing. This is not your grandfather’s sector. Manufacturing today is a mix of disruptive food and beverage brands; of advanced fabrication sending satellites into orbit, fashioning electric motors, and developing the next wave of U.S.-made medical devices and bio-products; and of aspirational brands across the catch-all “Other” category in the language of economists. It’s also a sector underpinned by a solid foundation -- a cadre of welders, benders, and cutters in such high demand that RK, a regional infrastructure giant, today has 300 apprentices in its fouryear program, with plans to hire them all. 300! Solar Projects Planned For Grand Valley, CO Solar power projects are planned for locations near Grand Junction and Palisade, three of six projects along the Interstate Highway 70 corridor through Colorado. Construction is expected to soon begin on a 2 megawatt solar garden planned for an industrial area in Grand Junction, Construction is underway on a 2 megawatt project in Palisade. Projects also are planned for sites in Parachute and west of Silt. Two more projects are planned for Grand Junction and Silt in 2019. The solar gardens are a collaborative effort between Standard Solar and Pivot Energy. Standard Solar will finance, own and maintain the six solar gardens developed and constructed by Pivot
Energy. A community solar garden enables subscribers to purchase a portion of power production and receive credits on their electric bills. By one estimate, community solar gardens can serve 50 percent to 75 percent of consumers who don’t have access to conventional rooftop installations. According to the Colorado Energy Office, Colorado leads the nation with nearly 70 community solar projects in operation. Subscribers have signed up for the full production from solar gardens in Grand Junction, Palisade, Parachute and Silt. Subscribers are sought for the additional gardens in Grand Junction and Silt. The six solar projects are expected to produce a total of 18,644,960 kilowatt hours of energy. That’s equivalent to offsetting greenhouse gas emissions from 2,971 passenger vehicles driven for one year and carbon dioxide emissions from nearly 7,600 tons of coal burned. “The shale operators obviously are very sensitive to prices. So as we saw price declines, they were going to pull back on operations and production,” she said, adding that recovering oil prices are helping spur production activity. “Any of the ancillary...manufacturers related to shale operations will also get a boost,” Ms. Bostjancic said. The manufacturing sector was hit hard by the 2007-09 recession and later by a big drop in oil prices, which hurt energy production. It also has been buffeted by years of competition from low-cost countries such as China. The Trump administration has imposed tariffs on imported steel and aluminum and also on a wide range of imports from China, moves meant to encourage more production in the U.S. at the expense of foreign competitors by driving up the price of imported goods. Cuts in U.S. corporate tax rates also were meant to spur domestic investment.
U.S. Manufacturing Capacity Increases for 16th Month in a Row U.S. manufacturers increased their capacity for the 16th straight month in September, fresh evidence that a strengthening economy is helping to propel a U.S. industrial rebound. The Trump Administration has prioritized increasing manufacturing investment in the U.S. with tax cuts and tariffs on a range of imported goods. Manufacturing capacity, tracked by the Federal Reserve, is a measure of how much production plants could achieve if running at full steam, a proxy for how much they are expanding their plants and productivity. Manufacturing capacity began recovering from a steep decline in 2011, faded in 2014 and resumed a modest march higher in mid-2015. In September it was up 1.4% from a year earlier. The report suggests investment in U.S. manufacturing has been increasing at a steady pace over the past three years. In June it passed its 2008 peak. The latest Fed manufacturing report showed factory output also rose in September, helping drive overall industrial production up 0.3% for the month. The Fed noted that output was “held down slightly” by Hurricane Florence but that the estimated effect was less than 0.1 percentage point. The pickup in manufacturing production and capacity in recent years reflects a strong global economy and could also be tied to a resurgence in U.S. oil and gas output, said Kathy Bostjancic, head U.S. financial-market economist at Oxford Economics. “We are in the midst of a manufacturing renaissance—something which nobody thought you’d hear–-which means more jobs for our great electrical contractors,” President Trump said this month at an electrical-contractors convention in Philadelphia. While some steelmakers have expanded U.S. production in the wake of the tariffs, other U.S. manufacturers remain heavily dependent on imported metals and have been constrained by the higher costs associated with tariffs. Evidence of slack in the industrial sector persists. Manufacturers operated at 75.9% of their capacity in September, below a long-run average of 78.3%. “That suggests there’s still excess capacity in manufacturing,” Ms. Bostjancic said, adding, “that’s a reason

SBA Approves 1,766 Loans In Colorado For FY 2018 The U.S. Small Business Administration approved loans 1,766 loans worth $884.9 million in fiscal year 2018 in Colorado. According to a release, the loans created or retained more than 17,200 jobs in the state. The fiscal year ran from Oct. 1, 2017 to Sept. 30. “The SBA continues to power small business growth and economic development across Colorado,” SBA Region VIII Administrator Dan Nordberg said. “The small business community has benefited from a
very good pro-business environment which was enhanced this year by the President’s tax cuts and reduction of red tape and regulations. The end result has been more jobs being created in both rural and urban communities statewide.” For the fourth straight year, the top SBA 7(a) lender in Colorado was Wells Fargo, which made 239 loans worth $91.5 million. The 7(a) loan program is the SBA’s primary program for providing financial assistance to small businesses and offers guarantees on loans to small businesses of up to $5 million on reasonable terms and conditions. These loans are commonly used for acquiring land, purchasing equipment or working capital.

work onsite or near their operations. With high schools no longer offering specialized vocational training and apprenticeship programs a shadow of what they were 30 or 40 years ago, the National Tooling and Machining Association, which represents precision custom manufacturers, has ramped up its training in recent years. A newish online curriculum called NTMA-U offers coursework in metallurgy, moldmaking, dimensional metrology, advanced diemaking. It also founded and supports* the National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS), a credentialing program for precision machinists who have completed specialized training through their school or company. NIMS offers “train the trainer” workshops as well. Dean Bartles, the new president of NTMA, says he is looking for ways to improve the curriculum and plans on spending the next six months visiting some of the organization’s 1,300 member companies, the bulk of them small and medium-sized operations, to find out what their needs and concerns are. Along with advocacy, NTMA can offer resources to help them the smaller players navigate and afford emerging technologies for their operations, he says. Bartles, who has held a variety of association roles in the past decade, shepherded the development and construction of the John Olson Advanced Manufacturing Center at the University of New Hampshire, which opened in June 2018. The center was designed to combine classroom engineering work with hands-on manufacturing training and visualization. But he spent of the bulk of his career—35 years—in aerospace
manufacturing. For 13 years, he was vice president and general Manager of the Ordnance and Tactical Systems Division at General Dynamics, overseeing three plants, including one in Joplin, Pennsylvania, that produced large-caliber ammunition. The Joplin plant manufactured lightweight tactical vehicles for artillery systems. “Special Forces had a requirement for a small vehicle designed to go up narrow mountain paths in Afghanistan,” he says. “We won the contract. That was my swan song.” Early in his career, he worked in specialized machining operations for several companies, including General Defense Corp., Olin Ordnance, and Fairchild Republic Company, at plants in Turkey and Egypt as well as in the United States. Another priority for Bartles is working with industry to further develop MT Connect, an open-source protocol for the industry allows exchange of data between any machine tool, so machines with different software can share data. Bartles is on the board of the non-profit MTConnect Institute, which is developing the free, open standard. By: Laura Putre Industry Week A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Kodak’s electrophotographic technology has been around for more than 40 years, and the KODAK NEXPRESS platform offers a modular, upgradeable package that Evolve can transform into a production technology for additive manufacturing. Evolve will be using a toner manufacturing process developed by Kodak to make part toners for its own system, and the electrophotographic technology will be a part of the entire system, including hardware, materials, processes, workflow software, and services required to print and finish parts with speed, quality and cost-effectiveness. The two companies are expected to work together on manufacturing, service and support as well. The first alpha STEP system was shipped to a strategic partner a couple of months ago, utilizing resources from both Evolve and Kodak. By Clare Scott | 3D Printing, Business

Kodak and Evolve Additive Solutions Partner to Further Develop STEP 3D Printing Technology
Amazon has launched a training program aimed at filling the computer engineer career pipeline with more than just a dribble of future tech workers.
Kodak and Evolve Additive Solutions are both relatively new entrants to the 3D printing industry. Evolve Additive Solutions emerged this year, a spinoff from Stratasys. Now the two companies have announced that they will be working together in a new partnership. Kodak will supply Evolve with imaging systems, parts and consumables based on the KODAK NEXPRESS digital electrophotographic system, and the two companies have signed Joint Development Agreements for equipment and materials with the goal of further developing Evolve’s Selective Thermoplastic Electrophotographic Process (STEP) technology.
The Amazon Future Engineer program hopes to inspire more than 10 million children and young adults a year from underserved and low-income communities to pursue careers in computer science.

WELCOME TO OLYMPIC METALS’ NEW HEADQUARTERS
Your AS9100 Revision D Certified Metals Distribution Company
Olympic Metals was founded a little more than 40 years ago when Bill Gibb and Ado Rekart made the decision to start a small metals distribution company that would prosper through hard work and superior customer service. When the company was started it was little more than a metals broker in a small trailer and fenced lot. Through the years, the company has grown exponentially and is currently located in Centennial, Colorado in a state of the art 61,000 square foot facility. What started as two men with an idea has grown into the premier aluminum plate distributor in Colorado. Bill made the decision to sell Olympic Metals to Reliance Steel and Aluminum Company in 2002. He felt this move gave the company the greatest chance to grow and succeed, and his biggest wish was that his employees would have the ability to thrive under the Reliance group. Once the sale was complete, Olympic’s minority owner Chris Pancoast assumed the leadership role for the company. After Chris’s passing in 2012, Bill’s son Greg moved up into the role of General Manager. Greg has worked for Olympic since 1990. As the economy started to recover a bit, Greg, along with some tenured employees, made the decision to make a change. “We felt that we needed to bring more value to our market in order to grow and stay competitive. We had a small bit of aerospace work, but realized A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

2018
that in order to truly capture this growing segment we needed to become AS9100 certified.” Along with implementing a true quality system, they also made the decision to join forces with another Reliance Company, Bralco Metals. Bralco is a premier aerospace aluminum plate distributor with eight locations spread across the western United States. “Joining the Bralco group truly enhanced our business. It gave us access to products that we otherwise would have struggled with, which is a huge benefit to our customers.” Business has been growing ever since. Just this past year the company moved into its new state of the art metal service center, more than doubling its previous square footage. The company owned facility sits on an expansive piece of land in Centennial, Colorado and the new site has land to provide for future growth. Greg says, “Our new facility allows us to operate much more efficiently, which is a must as we continue to grow our business. Not only are we able to strategically add to our inventory, but we can operate quicker, more accurately, and much more safely than before.”
Olympic maintains a $2 million dollar inventory to complement its five precision aluminum plate saws. They supply a full size range up to 10” thick in aluminum 2xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx alloys. “Being able to offer a complete range of alloys and sizes really gives us an advantage in the market, and along with our 99.3% On Time Delivery record, we feel our customers should have no reason to look elsewhere for their raw material needs”, Gibb adds. While business at Olympic Metals over the past two decades has been “anything but status quo,” many of the business principles that made the company successful 40 years ago remain in place today. For one, they have outstanding employee retention. Today, there are several employees who have remained loyal to Olympic Metals and its customers for decades, some for nearly as long as the company has been open. Joe Young, the first employee that Bill and Ado hired 38 years ago says, “Olympic Metals has always been a great company to work for. Since I am in sales I get to hear from our customers on a daily basis. I have always been proud of our superior customer service; we always go above and beyond expectations.” He continued, “We still run the business like a family owned company - we will all deliver parts in the back of our cars when it is needed.” About the company’s move to its new facility, Joe says, “Each move we have made over the past 40 years takes us to a new level.” Colleen Eachus, a 30 year employee, says her official title is Office Manager, but she elaborates, “We all wear many hats at Olympic Metals.” Colleen says she came to Olympic Metals specifically because she wanted to work for a small, family-run company. “Today, we are a part of a very large entity, but both Reliance and Bralco let us run our division as a business; they are hands off so we still maintain the small business feel.” Greg adds that in the warehouse Olympic Metals is also privileged to have employees with decades of service, including Mike Flynn and Tim Ausler. He adds, “We even have the legacy of Chris Pancoast’s son Mike Pancoast, who today is our Operations Manager.” While Olympic Metals specializes in aluminum, specifically sheet and plate, they also offer a wide variety of other metals including stainless steel, brass, bronze, and copper. Olympic was built supporting a variety of businesses, from companies that were “one person with a mill in their garage” to Fortune 500 entities. Greg says, “We’ve always enthusiastically supported small customers, and it is amazing how many of our larger customers now were once start ups that we serviced years ago.” He added, “When we were small and independent we had to out service all of our competitors. Today, we may be bigger but we only know one way to work, and that’s offering the best in quality and service that we built our reputation on.” As part of their AS9100 certification, Olympic Metals receives report cards from a number of their customers, and they are consistently an A+ supplier. Their continuous improvement is paying dividends for the company; while retirements have resulted in a smaller employee
team, the company is seeing year over year revenue increases. Greg says, “Several factors have contributed to our significantly higher revenue per employee; our new facility that we designed for efficiency is paying off, our AS9100 certification has enabled our entry into a new market, aerospace, and new equipment enables more accurate and faster precision processing. We are getting more metal out on time with less people.” Greg and the Olympic Metals team value their employees. In the new facility the company is building out an employee area that includes both a lounge and a workout area. Greg says, “We want Olympic Metals to be a great place to work.” Olympic Metals supports customers’ non ferrous metal requirements throughout Colorado. The members of the AS9100 certified company invite you to tour their new state of the art facility. For more information, contact them at 303-2869700 or visit rsac.com. Manufacturing output rose 0.3% after an upwardly revised 0.3% gain in the prior month. Economists had projected a median increase of 0.2%. Total industrial production, which also includes mining and utilities, increased a below-forecast 0.1%, reflecting declines in those sectors. Factory output continued to grow at a solid clip, supported by a range of sectors including metals, machinery, aerospace and furniture. While buoyant consumer demand and this year’s corporate tax cuts have helped boost production, the sector faces headwinds including higher costs for materials and supply constraints partly linked to the trade war with China. The industrial production figures reflect a 0.5% decline in utility output, the biggest drop since June, and a 0.3% decrease in mining, the largest decline since January. Hurricanes Florence and Michael, which made landfall in September and October respectively, lowered industrial production during the two months, “but their effects appear to be less than 0.1% per month,” the Fed said. Capacity utilization, measuring the amount of a plant that’s in use, eased to 78.4% from an upwardly revised 78.5% in the prior two months, the highest since January 2015. That compares with the long-run average of 79.8%. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

That plane is the Airbus A220, formerly the Bombardier C Series, which landed with the carrier last week complete with extensive flight testing done by Bombardier inWichita and production by Spirit AeroSystems Inc. of the aircraft’s engine pylons. But it’s a jet that has also had an impact felt far beyond Wichita, as it was Delta’s original order for the aircraft that set in motion a turn of events that reshaped the commercial aviation landscape. That order, made in 2016 with Bombardier for 75 of the aircraft, sparked a trade protest by the Boeing Co. that in turn led to a majority ownership stake in the C Series program being acquired by Airbus. And that in turn helped lead to the joint venture in the works between Boeing and Embraer of Brazil to partner on competing aircraft. As the dust of the C Series-to-A220 saga settles, Delta now prepares to give U.S. travelers their first opportunity to fly on the newest member of the Airbus family. That could someday include passengers out of the Air Capital, where Delta offers service to Atlanta and Minneapolis from Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. For now, though, passengers will have to catch flights on the inaugural routes between New York, Boston and Dallas that begin in January, or wait as markets including Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Detroit and Houston are added through August.
“In many ways, the A220 represents our continued work to make flying better for everyone and represents the go-forward objectives of our fleet strategy,” Delta COO Gil West said. By Daniel McCoy – Wichita Business Journal
August U.S. Cutting Tool Consumption Rises 11.2% August U.S. cutting tool consumption totaled $223.47 million, according to the United States Cutting Tool Institute and AMT— The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the Cutting Tool Market Report (CTMR) collaboration, was up 11.2% from July’s $200.97 million and up 13.9% when compared with the $196.23 million reported for August 2017. With a year-to-date total of $1.636 billion, 2018 is up 12% when compared with 2017. These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals reported by the companies participating in the CTMR program. The totals here represent the majority of the U.S. market for cutting tools. “August results posted double-digit increases from the previous month, previous year-to-date and previous year-over-year,” said Phil Kurtz, vice chairman of Wetmore Tool and Engineering. “August also set a new record for total monthly sales. The volume of cutting tools being consumed reflects the good backlogs in metal-cutting tool shops across the United States. While the increases may cool off through the fourth quarter, it appears the run rate will remain very strong.” According to Chris Kaiser, president and CEO of BIG Kaiser Precision Tooling: “Our year-to-date sales reflect what we have seen from the data until August with a 12%-plus increase. More machine tools have been sold this year than last. Everyone is equipping their new machines with cutting tools and toolholders. We’ve seen increases in aerospace, defense, and fracking pumps. Automotive, mining, construction, and agriculture are good, but not as strong as those previous industries.”

The Cutting Tool Market Report is jointly compiled by AMT and USCTI, two trade associations representing the development, production, and distribution of cutting tool technology and products. It provides a monthly statement on U.S. manufacturers’ consumption of the primary consumable in the manufacturing process—the cutting tool. Analysis of cutting tool consumption is a leading indicator of both upturns and downturns in U.S. manufacturing activity, as it is a true measure of actual production levels.

ees must be well trained in accurately capturing data, holding each other accountable and understanding how daily processes impact costing. Have accurate bills and routers.Without them lead times will be incorrect, causing mate-rials to be ordered at the wrong times, inventory overstocks or fees for expediting materials. Set realistic due dates. Plan your work orders correctly to set yourself up for success. Issuing due dates on a work order for a week from now, when you know it will take several weeks to make the part, will set your shop up for failure. Obtain correct cost and conversion factors. You should always know a PO’s cost. Have timely PO receipts. When you enter the PO receipt on time, traceability of any material needed to complete the PO will not be lost. How to Manufacture Like a Boss: 13 To Do’s Nick Knight, Global Shop Solutions
Issue material on time. Controlling your inventory is one of the most important components in manufacturing. Watch your cycle count adjustments. The more cycle count adjustments made, the less inventory control there will be. Finish your job. If you’re not closing out jobs correctly, materials will continue to be issued out, leading to incorrect demand. Have a plan. A plan to handle rework or bad parts on work orders where the bulk of the parts have been completed should be in place.
Every manufactured part has a story—including how something is made, how much it costs, how much it can be sold for and if you make it again. A good manufacturing story will be filled with precise detail and accuracy, and will guide your future processes based on a truthful history. And this means your customers will want more. Why? Because you are manufacturing like a boss, which means you must:
Track labor and perform daily balancing. It’s better to find labor mistakes as soon as they happen so the cost is corrected immediately. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
• Master the four key transactions: obtaining purchasing receipts; issuing material; WIP to finished goods; and shipping/invoicing. • Know your costs (freight, labor, outside services, overhead, material, other) with great accuracy. • Price your parts competitively and profitably. • Quote your jobs with speed and accuracy. • Reduce risk by knowing instead of guessing.
Compare estimates to actuals. Having something to base costing on is important because you don’t have a way to know if your cost is correct without a baseline.
When you are doing the above, you are making parts faster and better, watching it all in real time and knowing exactly what everything costs. So how do you become a “boss” manufacturer? Get back to the basics and master these 13 to do’s: Prepare to win. Manufacturing can be won or lost in how prepared your company as a whole is, not just individual people. Close work orders on time. This will save you time, money and major headaches compared to parts being cycled in and out because you forgot to close out a work order.
Stop guessing and start knowing. Know your costs with high precision instead of guessing at what it really costs to get a part out the door. In manufacturing, it’s easy to lose focus. As time goes by, we find ourselves working harder for the same results. Typically, this means we have stepped away from the successful plan that got us to the top of the mountain; at this point, we need to get back to basics.
