Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s all small stuff. I had the pleasure to attend a weekend art auction recently, and met some artists who, though not household names, are well known in the artist community and are enjoying a substantial income from their livelihood.

Interestingly, all the artists featured at the weekend event grew up in very poor families, and all struggled in their early educational years. What I found extremely heart warming is that with their success, they are using their gift of art to give back to society. I will cite just 2 examples; Artist Michael Godard has dedicated himself to philanthropic causes through his art. “The funds I help raise save lives and at the end of the day, it’s the most important thing I do,” declares Godard. In 2006, his 16 yr. old daughter passed away after her battle with brain cancer. “All the money in the world can not bring her back, but the funds I help raise for a cure will help save another child,” said Godard. In his career that has spanned decades, Stephen Fishwick has earned widespread acclaim, but what makes him most proud are his philanthropic endeavors that have raised over $1 million for various charities. Stephen’s ‘For Life Collection’ features endangered animals, and he said that it is designed to educate the public and spur them to provide public support for these animals. We’re nearing Christmas, a time when we are all at our most generous and giving selves. It is a good time to discuss simple living, particularly since a number of religious and spiritual traditions encourage this. I have kept this short writing in my collection of memorable writings for a very long time now, and I today I feel let to share it. Interestingly, it is not clear who the original author was. One source credits Henry David Thoreau, an American naturalist and author, as the individual who is often considered to have made the classic secular statement advocating a life of simple and sustainable living in his book Walden (1854). Here it is: SIMPLE FORMULA FOR LIVING • Live beneath your means. • Return everything you borrow. • Stop blaming other people. • Admit it when you make a mistake. • Give clothes not worn to charity. • Do something nice and try not to get caught. • Listen more; talk less. • Take a 30-minute walk every day. • Strive for excellence, not perfection. • Be on time. Don’t make excuses. • Don’t argue. Get organized. Continued next column

Announcements & Releases Gene Haas Foundation In 1999 Gene Haas, owner of Haas Automation, Inc.,America’s leading builder of CNC machine tools, founded the Gene Haas Foundation. Growing up with a strong social conscience instilled by his family, Haas initially formed the foundation to fun the needs of the local community. The purpose of the Gene Haas Foundation is to build skills in the machining industry by providing scholarships for CNC Machine Technology students and NIMS Credentials. Gene’s commitment to the importance of US manufacturing has incited him to grow his personal foundation and direct his foundation board to focus on manufacturing education in the form of scholarships for CNC Machinist Training. Scholarship Grants are awarded annually to High Schools and Post-Secondary (Community andTechnical Colleges as well as Universities) institutions. Schools may apply every year for additional grants. Funds may be used for competitions such as SkillsUSA, FIRST Robotics, Supermileage, SAE, etc. or NIMS Credentials, but many not be used for any capital equipment. The Foundation has awarded over $60,000,000 since inception and in 2019 $167,000 to the MMT, LLC territory alone. 6 Ways Robotics Can Help Close Manufacturing’s Talent Gap Is robotics important to the future of manufacturing? Given the current and future talent gap in the sector, signs point to “Yes.” As of August 2018, as reported by Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute, the U.S. had 508,000 jobs available in manufacturing. They called this the best jobs gain in the industry in over two decades. However, this opportunity will soon start looking more like a potential crisis for employers. The report predicts 4.6 million jobs — a mix of new positions and exiting retirees — to fill between 2018 and 2028, with only 2.2 million of them “likely” to be successfully filled.The following is a look at six ways advanced robotics are already picking up the slack. 1. Robots eliminate unpopular work and reduce turnover - One of the challenges faced by Hitchiner Manufacturing Co. in Milford, N.H., was that newly hired skilled and semi-skilled machine operators often didn’t make it through their first day. In one study of manufacturing companies, 43% of respondents indicated their operations were sitting at 20% turnover per year or even higher. Industrial automation can help cut down on that churn and save jobs. 2. Robots make existing talent more useful - In an industry where skilled workers are both more valuable and scarcer than ever, companies need to find “force multipliers” for existing talent. Doing so helps lift employees into higher-paying and more compelling positions. This, in turn, improves employee engagement. “Businesses of all sizes are having trouble attracting and retaining talent,” said CEO JasonWalker. From collaborative robot arms to autonomous mobile robots, automation enables companies of all sizes to repurpose their existing workforce, which is already spread thin.“I go from a shipping and receiving clerk to also being a robot wrangler,” said Walker, as he described new roles for employees. “I add a new and valuable skill to the company. … I have Industry 4.0 talents.” 3. Robots improve safety for human talent -Private industry in the U.S. reported 2.8 million non-fatal illnesses and injuries in 2017. Manufacturing alone contributed 115,500 incidents of days away from work in 2017, or around 93 cases for every 10,000 employees.The perception that working in a factory offers high risks for low rewards is one challenge for staff recruiting and retention. In addition, people are more likely to be bored and make mistakes with certain tasks. “If a job is repetitive and boring, human workers tend to make a mistake, whereas robots can do these things the same way time after time,” said Frank Hearl, chief of staff at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

4. Drones can provide agility at every stage of production - Deloitte last year identified drone data coordinator as one of a handful of new positions opening up as robotics literally take off in manufacturing. Unmanned aerial vehicles can play a role in multiple stages of production: • Drones can efficiently and safely locate raw materials out in the field by performing lower flyovers than planes. • Drones can transport materials, tools, and other assets within manufacturing plants by using vertical space and keeping out from underfoot. • Drones provide considerable opportunities in automated inventory management when combined with bar codes, QR codes or RFID tags. • The agility of drones, whether in the field or within a manufacturing facility, can take manufacturing by storm.A Spanish car manufacturer called SEAT uses drones to carry automotive parts between production and assembly plants.

This particular fetch-and-carry task once took humans an hour and a half or longer, but drones can do the same work in a quarter of an hour. It’s a perfect example of using robots to provide speed and agility while employees pivot to more cognitively demanding work. 5. Autonomous trucks keep parts moving - The American Trucking Association predicts the U.S. will see its truck driver shortage double in the next 10 years. Demand for freight services has softened slightly amid ongoing global trade tensions, but the talent crunch remains. Automotive and technology companies are working quickly to solve or at least partially alleviate this problem. For those reasons, Kay Manufacturing began leveraging collaborative robots at its facility in Calumet City, Ill. Thanks to improvements in machine vision and pathfinding, cobots have improved awareness of their surroundings in comparison with previous-generation robotics.They’re also capable of carrying out highly detailed and accurate inspections.Applying just one cobot to a parts inspection process helped Kay Manufacturing repurpose three employees at a time into better-paying roles. Critically, Kay says it hasn’t laid off a single worker since it began incorporating robotics back in 1996, and it bought Universal Robots’ 25,000th robot arm. North-Central Idaho Program Prepares Students For Local Manufacturing Jobs Nezperce High School senior Joe McGuigan is one of a handful of high school students who landed a summer job with a manufacturing company after participating in an industry-based apprenticeship program. He worked for Hillco Technologies last summer, starting at $11 an hour as a summer intern, and he learned a wide variety of skill sets on the job, including driving a forklift and running machines. There are more than 100 companies engaged in metal fabrication and manufacturing in north central Idaho – machine shops, guns and ammunition, farm equipment manufacturers and more. The workforce serving those companies is aging and nearing retirement age, and there’s a shortage of entry-level workers with the skills necessary to serve the industry. “Manufacturing has picked up in the small communities in north central Idaho, and it’s tough hiring people to work in manufacturing in this area,” said Lenny Hill, McGuigan’s boss and president of Hillco Technologies.

Hillco manufactures combine-leveling systems for farmers harvesting wheat in the steep, rolling Palouse countryside in the Palouse region, among other things. Located in Nez Perce, the company employs about 35 employees and typically pays a starting wage of $18-$19 an hour. “We like to recruit locally because job candidates understand the rural nature of this area and the outdoor lifestyle,” Hill said. “If they come from outside the area, a few of them might stick, but often we’re a little too remote compared to what they’re used to. It might be hard to find a Domino’s nearby or a Starbucks.” Hill is a member of the Northwest Intermountain Manufacturing (NIMA) Association. He was supportive of forming a partnership between the Nor thwest Intermountain Manufacturers Association, LewisClark State College, the Clearwater Economic Development Association, the University of Idaho and 16 school districts to create a pilot project to train high school students in fabrication and machining. The concept is to give students a solid skill set and educational background in manufacturing so they can be ready to start work right after high school. Eighty-nine students signed up the first year; 28 students enrolled in the program during the final year of the three-year pilot program. It’s a rigorous program with challenging academic standards. Students are required to complete seven collegelevel courses in manufacturing and fabrication from the time they are a sophomore, so they can complete the course work by the time they graduate. Twenty-eight high school students who are still engaged in the NIMM pilot program may also choose to work in metal manufacturing or fabrication. Students have toured 12 different companies in the region that need a skilled manufacturing workforce such as Schweitzer Engineering and Idaho Forest Group.

Job Market Shows Resilience, Quieting Recession Fears The American jobs engine has been beaten and battered, but it just keeps chugging along. Employers added 128,000 jobs in October, the Labor Department said Friday, and revisions to prior months’ data tacked on another 95,000. The figures for October would have been stronger had it not been for the strike at General Motors, which shaved close to 50,000 workers from the

employment rolls, and for the layoff of some 20,000 temporary census workers. All told, the report and other recent data paint a picture of a job market that is weathering the storm of trade tensions and a cooling global economy. The manufacturing sector is in a slump, business investment is falling, and overall economic growth has slowed this year. after the spring success of its first satellite sparked a burst of interest. “We are a fairly new company, but we’re on orbit and we’re signing customers up,” said Charles Beames,York’s chairman and chief strategy officer. The company’s goal is to make its S-Class satellites an off-the-shelf purchase for customers, meaning the core of the satellites are produced in bulk to bring costs down and customers can modify the satellites with different power packages and specialized instruments. York’s first satellite launched May 5 on a New Zealand-based Rocket Lab launch vehicle. The satellite, called Harbinger, was paid for by the U.S. Army, in part, to demonstrate on-orbit capabilities. Proving the S-Class satellite’s capability has attracted a burst of customer interest, Beames said.With industry trends moving toward York’s style of production, the company predicts a big jump in demand. “We’re on a path to build 50 next year,” he said. “Everything looks like growth is coming.We need to be able to do hundreds. We want to be ahead of the demand curve. York aims to shrink the time between when a customer signs a contract to launching a satellite, reducing it from 12 months to just four, Beames said.

In tech, nothing lasts forever. But when judged against the frenetic pace at which new businesses rise and fall, some things feel like they come pretty close. HP’s invention of the personal laser printer four decades ago was the culmination of one of the most successful corporate “skunk works” projects ever undertaken. A group of engineers far from HQ came up with a hit product that created a new market. It came complete with a business model, based on making money from follow-on sales of ink cartridges, that proved an even more effective innovation. The profits from laser printers supported HP for many years, and now look likely to outlast it. Xerox’s unsolicited bid for HP Inc this week, if successful, will finally bring the curtain down on a company that long defined Silicon Valley’s unique approach to innovation — though HP’s printers will go on throwing off cash, this time to help support the huge debt load Xerox plans to take on to buy its much bigger rival. HP’s phenomenal printer business is instructive for today’s tech leaders. A single hit product or service, if managed well, can turn into an annuity lasting far longer than its creators have a right to expect. But fail to use the profits from today’s cash cow to find the next big thing, and even these have their limits. In contrast to their Chinese counterparts, which have shot off in every direction in search of new digital markets, the biggest US internet and consumer tech companies have stuck close to what they know best. Google may have dabbled, nearly a decade ago, with social networking, and Facebook with search, but they dropped these profit-sapping exercises to double down on what each does best. Judged by the standards of any other point in business history, the results have been extraordinary. At Google, search is estimated to make up about 80 per cent of all advertising, putting it on track to become a $100bn business this year. The iPhone was a $165bn business for Apple in 2018, accounting for more than 60 per cent of revenues.

Diversification is a valuable tool for mature companies, or those with a risky or cyclical core business. But a hit tech product or service can last far longer — and carry a company much further — than seemed possible at the outset.

Back in the early days of internet search, Yahoo in some ways seemed a better bet than Google. It looked like remaining a close second in search, and also had a substantial online display advertising business, giving it far more options to offer to advertisers. But Google’s one-trick pony carried the day. This does not mean that there is not still huge pressure to find the next big thing. Today’s big tech companies, after dabbling for years in side-bets that mostly failed to turn into significant money-earners, have now arrived at the point where this issue has assumed a matter of urgency. Denver Startup Wins $50,000 In BBVA Entrepreneurial Contest Facing off against five other startups from the region, Denver’s Vita Inclinata Technologies took home the $50,000 grand prize in the BBVA Entrepreneurial Opportunity Contest finale in Phoenix. The contest, held in partnership with American City Business Journals, was launched earlier this year in six different markets: Denver, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Houston and Phoenix. Each market winner took home $10,000 and was invited to compete for the $50,000 final round prize at the end of October. After winning the local Denver competition, Vita Inclinata’s autonomous suspended-load stability system impressed judges and landed it the grand prize.

Vita Inclinata’s technology is essentially a drone that provides counterthrust to bring a helicopter’s rescue basket back to center. The company, founded in 2012, is preparing to rollout its technology for military and civilian use next year.

“While all of our six regional finalists possessed unique and clear business growth plans, the panel concluded thatVita Inclinata’s mission was an exceptionally powerful venture,” Dobers said in a statement. “The story behind the company, its business model and its use of digital capabilities were all significant factors in deeming them the overall winner.”

DESRI Acquires Utah Projects from First Solar

Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI) is the acquirer of the Cove Mountain and Cove Mountain 2 projects in Iron County, Utah.The acquisition of the two projects, the sales of which were previously disclosed by First Solar and which total 180 megawatts (MW)AC in capacity, nearly doubles DESRI’s portfolio of First Solar-developed projects to over 360MWAC. Most Admired CEO Tory Bruno Leads The Way For Space Exploration United Launch Alliance President and CEO Tory Bruno has led the rocket manufacturer to 135 successful missions, including NASA’s sun-searching Parker Solar Probe. During his 35-year career, Bruno has developed missile-defense systems and personally holds rocket patents. This Q&A has been edited for style, clarity and brevity. ULA is winning major defense and intelligence contracts, carrying exploratory moon missions and preparing for the nation’s first crewed missions from U.S. soil in nearly a decade. What has a shift to competitive contracts meant for the company? Ten years ago, ULA was the only launch company that could fly the U.S. government’s missions. During this time, the satellites on orbit were running out of life and their replacements were late. It was expected that gaps in GPS, weather and communications would occur. ULA’s mission was to provide the flexibility to launch any satellite that made it to the pad and to lose fewer than one in 10 during flight. We did all of that — losing none and avoiding gaps in capability.This gave the country breathing space to invest in other launch companies, achieving a broader industrial base.This made it possible to introduce competition about three years ago, putting the industry and nation in a strong position for the space challenges ahead. Fagnant, owners of Qualtek Manufacturing. The Fagnants bought the building at 4240 N. Nevada Ave., next door to Qualtek, four years ago and have been renovating it for the past year. They’ve finished the first phase of renovations, which includes four coworking spaces ranging from 1,500 to 1,700 square feet, a furnished mezzanine for collaborative conversations and presentations, and a kitchen and break room.

Collaboration is one of the benefits tenants of the three open spaces will gain, and one of the reasons why the Fagnants decided to develop the 32,000-square-foot building.They are looking for companies that are in business and need a place to grow, and they hope the project will help strengthen light manufacturing in Colorado Springs and demonstrate that manufacturing is innovative and interesting. Mary Fagnant recalls a panel discussion her company hosted, during which a young woman asked why manufacturers weren’t making their facilities more attractive and fun.“We started thinking about the idea that … maybe we could change it up a bit and see how we can make it an attractive environment where we can have fun and we can, more importantly, save money for manufacturers and encourage all of us to help each other grow,” Fagnant says. The Fagnants already had a long-term tenant, Colorado Gold Distillery, occupying the back of the building.“It would have been much easier for us to go ahead and get another tenant, rather than changing the model quite a bit,” Fagnant says. “But we decided that we really wanted to … develop this space so we can help keep manufacturing in Colorado Springs.” They had planned to finish the renovations before adding tenants but decided to rent one of the spaces to MotoMinded, which designs and produces accessories for motorcycles. “We really want our tenants to be giving back to the community — not necessarily financially, but giving back their time,” Fagnant says. MotoMinded’s owner, ChrisVestal, “loves to tell people about what he does and teach them about 3D printers.” A unique feature of Milestones for Growth is that the walls of the rental spaces are 8 feet high, affording a view into the spaces from the mezzanine area above.Fagnant says she wants to bring in local students “and let them look and see what we really do and get what the real manufacturing of today looks like.” As the project got going, the Fagnants brought in JenniferTaylor to handle marketing and strategic partnerships.Taylor is helping Milestones for Growth develop partnerships with organizations such as the Pikes Peak Business and Education Alliance, UCCS, Pikes Peak Community College, Peak Startup, Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC and the Pikes Peak Small Business Development Center. Milestones “really is an economic development project,”Taylor says. “In the development of North Nevada Avenue, what we see as our part is to create a gathering space that’s neighborhood- and student-related — something like University Village. Zdenek admits that, in his words, “If I knew 30 years ago what I know now, my business would be very different today.” He provides a few examples; 1) Don’t select your suppliers based upon price! When you have a great supplier, stick with them. He elaborates, “I started working with Clark Smith, owner of Smith Machinery, soon after I opened my business 30 years ago. The first machine I purchased was a Mazak QUICKTURN 100. Over the past 3 decades, I’ve purchased about a dozen machines from Clark. The service, honesty and relationship my team and I have built with the Smith Machinery team, including their service arm, Smith Neo-Tech, is consistently outstanding.” Zdenek says that he has purchased machines from other machine tool dealers occasionally over the years, and he recognizes that this has been a mistake.

“If I had the knowledge in past years that I have today, I would only buy from Smith Machinery. Not only do you get outstanding quality machines, you get AJ, you get a service team that is extraordinary, and you get the office staff, (including Sue who we’ve worked with for almost all of our years in business) that too is outstanding.” “Clark doesn’t honey coat his recommendations – when he makes a proposal for what we need and the options that will be advantageous for us, we completely trust that he isn’t just trying to sell us a specific product, he is selling us what our busi-

ness needs.” Zdenek cites an example where he and Medo were purchasing a Mazak machine, and they were going to add a 4th axis rotary table at a later time. “Clark shared numbers with us, and showed us that adding the rotary table after the install would be much more costly.” “I want to give you a comparison of the service we receive from Smith Machinery versus other dealers.When we call in an issue with Smith Machinery, if we are scheduled for a 7 am next day service call, either Paul or Justin is there without fail at or before 7 am. When we call in an issue to another dealer, the service person may show up at 9 or 9:30.When service happens in the late afternoon, the Smith Machinery/Neo-Tech team has stayed until 9 pm, if that is what is needed to fix the problem.With the other service, they leave at 4:30 pm, and that typically means they have to return, because they didn’t fix the issue.” “ I have to bite my tongue when I am dealing with a machine service if it isn’t Smith Machinery.”

Medo says, “When a part is required for a fix on our Mazak machines, the Smith Neo-Tech team orders it immediately, and if the order goes in by 5 pm Mountain time, the part is delivered from Mazak to us by the next day.” 2) Take care of your employees and you will see fewer turnovers than others in the industry. It is a credit to Zdenek that more than half of the team has >15 years of tenure with the company. Medo and Zdenek are also very willing to take a new employee with no background into the shop. Medo says, “They might start with deburring, but as we see their work ethic and aptitude, we are able to help them to become very good machinists.” 3) Most customers are good for your business – a few are not. Zdenek elaborates, “I built this

business on honesty and fairness. I give my customers the best price I can offer. When a customer feels the part could be manufactured less expensively, I invite them to come into the shop to see exactly how we make the part, and what our costs are.” On just a few occasions, CNC Machine has had customers who were negative and/or dishonest enough that they had to let them go. 4) Buy what you can afford in business. “We’ve seen other companies overextend themselves, and when a downturn happened (and downturns are inevitable), they went out of business.” Zdenek believes in paying cash for his machines, owning his building, and fundamentally, remaining debt free. He also believes that you should buy the best machines you can afford to remain competitive. Zdenek adds, “With Mazak machines, we get superior built machines that help us to reduce set-up times, and cut cycle times.” Medo says the team finds fixturing so much easier with the Mazatrol controls.

“Without Smith Machinery, we wouldn’t be the business we are today.” He adds that this is also true with CNC Machine and Design’s team members as it is of their customers. Startup Skydweller To Turn Solar Impulse 2 Into Long-Endurance UAV When Solar Impulse 2 flew around the world in 2015-16, including Andre Borschberg’s almost five-day solo flight across the Pacific, it dispelled the belief that solar-powered aircraft must be gossamer machines with limited capabilities. Now the 236-ft.-span poster child for clean technology is being prepared for a new role—as a heavy-payload, long-endurance unmanned aircraft for commercial and government markets. The famed aircraft has been acquired by U.S. startup Skydweller Aero, formed by UAV experts from Northrop Grumman’s Special Projects organization and backed by European aerospace giant Leonardo and a group of private investors. Founded in Switzerland by Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard, Solar Impulse flew a smaller prototype in 2009. The team then built the 5,620-lb. SI2 for the around-the-world attempt, launching from Abu Dhabi in March 2015 and returning in July 2016 after circumnavigating the globe in 17 flights totaling 558.7 hr. and 22,915 nm. The feat included the longest solo flight on record, 2,206 nm and 117 hr. 52 min. from Nagoya, Japan, to Kalaeloa, Hawaii, Borschberg flying in an unpressurized cockpit at 28,000 ft., sleeping 2 hr. a day in 20-min. chunks. SI2 is approved to fly over populated areas, has accumulated several hundred hours safe flight, “but its true potential will only be realized when the human is removed,” believes Skydweller. Advances in solar-powered aircraft have created a new market for highaltitude pseudo-satellites (HAPS) in roles such as communications and surveillance. These are unmanned aircraft that can stay aloft in the stratosphere, above winds and weather, for days to weeks or months. But to reach altitudes above 60,000 ft., such aircraft must have ultralight airframes and limited payloads. Examples include Airbus’ Zephyr, an 82-ft.-span UAV weighing 165 lb. and carrying just an 11-lb. payload, but which holds a flight endurance record of almost 26 days. BAE Systems’ Phasa-35 is a 114-ft.-span aircraft weighing 330 lb. and carrying 33 lb., while Aurora Flight Sciences’ 243-ft.-span Odysseus was designed to carry a payload of 55 lb. SI2 is a different beast. The requirement to support a pilot on flights up to five days at altitudes below 30,000 ft. required a robust airframe and power system. When it flew around the world, the aircraft carried a 200-lb. pilot plus his seat, survival equipment, life raft, supplies, oxygen, toilet and a cockpit full of controls and displays. Removal of all that equipment during conversion will result in an unmanned aircraft able to carry a payload of 300-800 lb. and sustain altitudes of 15,000-45,000 ft.—medium altitudes that a HAPS must transit with extreme caution. Airbus has lost two Zephyrs this year to atmospheric turbulence during ascent from its operating base in Wyndham, Australia. Skydweller describes its aircraft as a medium-altitude pseudo-satellite (MAPS)—a new class of UAV able to carry heavy payloads for long durations. Flights are expected to last up to 90 days, with more than 2,900 ft.2 of solar cells on the upper surfaces of the wing, fuselage and tail generating 100 kW at 300 volts, including 2 kW of continuous power to payloads with peaks up to 20 kW. “The payload capacity of Skydweller is a game changer,” says Allen Gardner, chief technology officer. “The conventional wisdom was that solar aircraft had to be extremely light and fragile, fly in the stratosphere, and carry tiny payloads. We break that mold. Our aim is to carry heavy and powerful payloads and persist indefinitely in medium altitudes.” Skydweller’s operational envelope is a matrix of latitude, time-of-year, altitude, payload weight and power. After each flight, the aircraft will return to base and be equipped with new payload and battery loadouts optimized for the next time-of-year slot. “There is no question that building a MAPS is tough,” says Gardner. “Wind and weather are the biggest challenge. Opinion: Product Safety Awareness Differentiating this from Personal Safety Bretta Kelly, Owner BMSC, LLC Josh Kelly: Illustrations Employee Awareness of Product Safety is a new requirement to the AS9100D Standard.The requirement in Section 7.3 of the Standard makes it mandatory that every employee becomes familiar with it. There have been complications recently due to the AS9100D Standard’s ambiguous expectations for employee awareness; this ambiguity can be attributed to the rise of inconsistent training, questioning, and comprehension among Aerospace employees and auditors alike. Product Safety is a longstanding requirement in the AS9110 standards for maintenance, repair and overhaul. Product Safety involves an awareness of the potential consequences a final product deemed dysfunctional or hazardous can cause. While employees generally comprehend Product Safety, many are not accustomed to it being a requirement. Historically, Product Safety has not been treated as an urgent topic and has existed in the shadow

of Personal Safety instead. A typical aerospace company has numerous procedures in place that are intended to keep the customer safe long after the product has been delivered. These processes include the removal of protruding wires and sharp edges to prevent a potential injury. Employees can find themselves in a situation where they are familiar with the procedures themselves but fail to answer questions about the procedure’s purpose correctly; this is likely because employees are still unfamiliar with the new standard, and the structure of the question itself can lead to uncertainty regarding what category of safety-precaution the procedure would fall under. Personal Safety is often at the forefront of the employee’s mind at all times, and they are instructed to follow strict guidelines to maintain a level of caution. It is included within the employee’s training who they should report to, what type of hazards to be aware of, when they should wear specific kinds of safety equipment, where to safely dispose of dangerous materials. The employee is also trained about why they engage in specific procedures, the issue arises when they are not informed about the different
