Many of the hottest market trends of the pandemic era are now passe. The stay-at-home beneficiaries like Teladoc, Peloton, and Zoom are 60%-80% below their early 2021 peaks. Meme stocks (Stocks that have gained a cult-like following online and through social media platforms) are already down this year. Gold, which rallied 80% from March to August 2020, has barely been treading water for the better part of the last year. In 2022, new trends are starting to emerge. Most certainly one is in the electric vehicle space. Ford broke out of a 20-year trading range after announcing that it was doubling production capacity of its new electric F-150 Lightning. Volkswagen and Toyota are likewise gearing up to spend billions and take on Tesla. And what can we expect for the manufacturing industry this year? It’s unusual to see positive economic indicators paired with historic labor and supply chain challenges. But this is the trajectory for the US manufacturing industry in 2022 emerging from the pandemic. As production and capacity utilization surpassed pre-pandemic levels midyear, strong increases in new orders for all major subsectors signal growth continuing in 2022. Other trends experts have forecasted include:

Managing With A Workforce Shortage — Record numbers of unfilled jobs are likely to limit higher productivity and growth in 2022, and last year we estimated a shortfall of 2.1 million skilled jobs by 2030. Shrinking the industry’s public perception gap by making manufacturing jobs a more desirable entry point could be critical to meeting hiring needs in 2022. Engagement with a wider talent ecosystem of partners to reach diverse, skilled talent pools can help offset the recent wave of retirements and voluntary exits.

Manufacturing executives may also need to balance goals for retention, culture, and innovation. As flexible work is taking root in offices, manufacturers should explore ways to add flexibility across their organization in order to attract and retain workers. Organizations that can manage through workforce shortages and a rapid pace of change today can come out ahead.

Reshoring — Prior to the onset of the COVID pandemic, reshoring was often presented as a lofty goal for industry. In 2020 and 2021, the importance of doing business closer to home was thrown into sharp relief, with reshoring becoming a necessary way to bolster continuity. In 2022, reshoring will settle in as a necessary supply chain solution, evolving to become a more conventional way of operating. Supply Chain Management — The initial worldwide supply chain disruption of 2020 continued to make waves in 2021, driving home just how precarious the normal status quo has been for nearly every facility and business. Thus, it is unsurprising that in 2022, the supply chain will continue to hold a prominent position as an area for continuous monitoring, management, and improvement. Let’s hope and plan for a robust year for manufacturing here in the United States, and in our Rocky Mountain region. Until next issue, I wish you the best. And as always, God bless our troops, our Front liners, and our manufacturing industry.

Military Veterans Make a Difference at Mazak Mazak North America credits veterans as essential to its ongoing hiring efforts and its ability to move past the skills gap that challenges companies throughout the manufacturing industry. With 18 new veteran hires in 2021, the Mazak staff now includes 87 veterans in departments ranging from field service and parts to production and purchasing. “We’re constantly impressed with the strong work ethic, focused time management, adaptability and practical problem solving that veterans bring throughout our organization,” said Mazak Human Resources Director Bill Weier. “Their dedication, creativity and can-do attitude set an example of how to excel and advance.” Mazak is committed to providing these veterans with the training and development they need to build thriving, sustained careers with the company. Many veterans become Mazak Field Service Technicians, providing onsite troubleshooting, maintenance and repair on Mazak machine tools at customer facilities. The electrical and mechanical training that these veterans receive in the military meets many of the prerequisites for these jobs, enabling many of them to train and then enter the technician ranks in a mere six months. Managers praise these veterans for their diagnostic skills and their ability to reason through solutions without relying solely on documentation. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Hurco North America Announces New Apprenticeship Program Hurco North America announced the launch of a new apprenticeship program. The Field Service Apprenticeship (FSA) is a 2-year program that starts with a 12-week industry training that merges hands-on training and repair of CNC machines with classroom materials. Cory Miller, General Manager of Hurco North America, said, “We are fortunate to have a tenured service and support team at Hurco. The knowledge they have amassed is extremely valuable and the FSA program will allow them to transfer that knowledge to the next generation of service engineers with intensive training about the machine tool industry, how they are built, the technology that powers our CNC machines, how to diagnose issues, and service machines.” While candidates with a degree or working toward one are encouraged to apply, candidates who are mechanically inclined with no industry or engineering experience are also encouraged to apply for the FSA. “We know there are people outside our industry who would excel at a career as a service engineer for machine tools, but might not have been exposed to our industry. We believe the FSA will be important to bridge the skills gap and introduce more people to the machine tool industry, which benefits the industry as a whole,” said Miller. “If you have a strong work ethic, like to learn how things work, like hands-on training, and want a career instead of a job, this apprenticeship is for you,” said Mark Gilmore, Service Manager Announcements Con’t Next Page

None believe there will be a decrease in spending, unchanged from last month. ABOUT THE MCI Why an MCI-EFI? Confidence in the U.S. economy and the capital markets is a critical driver to the equipment finance industry. Throughout history, when confidence increases, consumers and businesses are more apt to acquire more consumer goods, equipment, and durables, and invest at prevailing prices. When confidence decreases, spending and risk-taking tend to fall. Investors are said to be confident when the news about the future is good and stock prices are rising.

together we will be able to greatly accelerate the field of 1/24/22 9:51 PM social robotics based on the combined work of both teams.” Since the launch of its first robot in 2014, Furhat Robotics has seen a yearly growth of sold robots within both academia and the corporate sector. The company works with U.S. brands including Disney, Intel, Accenture and Facebook, as well as academic institutions including Stanford, Northeastern and many others. The company is most known for its social robot that features a highly expressive and customizable face. Al Moubayed, Furhat’s CEO/co-founder, said the acquisition was an exciting moment for the social robotics industry. “We know that the next few years will be pivotal for our dream to bring social robots closer to people’s lives,” he said in a statement. “This rare event in bringing together the forces of two of the leading social robotics companies in the world is going to give us much stronger capabilities to move faster towards that dream. What Ian, Tim, and the team have built, during a few very difficult years under Covid, is a huge feat, and having them join Furhat is game changing for us.” With the acquisition, Misty will maintain its presence in Boulder and Bernstein and Enwall will join Furhat’s advisory board. Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 Colorado Company Chosen To Make NASA’s First Rocket To Launch From Mars

a NASA mission awarded last month.

Lockheed Martin Space will build a small rocket to blast off from Mars and carry the first samples off the red p l a n e t ’s surface under

The Jefferson County-based company has been part of every mission to reach Mars’ surface. Now it will create what NASA expects will be the first spacecraft to return scientific samples from another planet. “This groundbreaking endeavor is destined to inspire the world when the first robotic round-trip mission retrieves a sample from another planet – a significant step that will ultimately help send the first astronauts to Mars,” said Bill Nelson, NASA administrator, in a contract award announcement. years and is worth up to $194 million, the space agency said. NASA’s Mars Perseverance rover, which landed on Mars in 2020 and that Lockheed Martin Space played a role in, is designed to collect some Mars rocks and soil from the Jezero Crater region of Mars, plus air samples from the planet, and cache them for future recovery. The aeroshell and the heat shield for the Mars 2020 rover were designed and built at Lockheed Martin Space’s headquarters campus southwest of Denver. The Mars Ascent Vehicle award to Lockheed Martin Space is the first step in designing a complicated relay team of robotic spacecraft to bring those samples back to Earth in the early 2030s for advanced scientific study. People at the company are excited to have been chosen, said Lauren Duda, a Lockheed Martin Space spokeswoman. She declined to comment further and referred

Colorado Start-up company lands $85 million to expand rocket engine production A Colorado startup has landed $85 million from investors to scale up commercial production at its rocket engine factory north of the Denver metro area. Ursa Major Technologies attracted the investment just as it’s growing to meet orders for 50 rocket engines it is booked to deliver next year, and then to accelerate the pace of production to as many as two engines a week. Ursa Major Technologies employs 125 people and has a 90-acre engine assembly and test campus in Berthoud, north of the Denver metro area. It currently makes engines and test-fires them on three test stands, sometimes up to as many as nine test-firing sessions per day, Laurienti said. It’s an unusually fast pace for engine production, one made possible by the fact that much of the rocket engines — about 80% of them by weight — are 3D printed there at Ursa Major’s facility where the engines are assembled and tested. The funding will help the company expand production and physical rocket engine testing, and further design a new generation of engines it plans to sell. The emergence of affordable, more capable small satellites has led to the formation of many space launch companies aiming to help get commercial satellites to orbit more easily and affordably than traditional launch businesses such as Centennial-based United Launch Alliance or A Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain • 2

Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Rocket engine development is difficult, however, and the few new, U.S.-made engines that have been developed in recent decades have been designed for space launch vehicles. Ursa Major Technologies looks to make its engines an affordable, high-performance commodity flexible enough to serve the small satellite and commercial space launch markets, and the military’s interest in hypersonic missiles. The company makes the Hadley engine, capable of 5,000 pounds of thrust and able to throttle its power output and change the direction of its thrust. Rocket startup Phantom Space Corp., based in Tucson, uses eight Hadley engines in each of its Daytona rockets. Both Stratolaunch and General Orbit are customers, as is the U.S. Air Force and a prime contractor for the U.S. military that Ursa Major cannot reveal. Ursa Major also makes a larger engine,

called Ripley engine, which can generate 50,000 pounds of thrust and is more applicable to vertical, small satellite launch rockets. By Greg Avery – Denver Business Journal

answer the phone and, in most cases, is able to immediately help the customer. In situations where follow-up is needed, the customer can actually call back and talk with the same person. If not, they can call their banker who will get someone on the phone to assist them. VanDaele claims that “This is one of the key benefits of our niche concept. The folks on our team know who these customers are and were involved with the onboarding of the customer and ongoing support of that customer. I am not aware of any other bank or banking group that can operate on such an intimate level.” Banterra’s Machine Tool team has customers in all lower 48 states. Adding an office in Salt Lake City will allow for enhanced service to customers located in the Rocky Mountain states. VanDaele goes on to state that “Our approached has been well-received by companies large and small, from startups to revenue sizes exceeding $50 million. In addition to equipment purchases and refinances, we have assisted customers by providing building loans, lines of credit, equipment lines, and even company purchases.” He adds, “The product mix sets us far and above our competitors even though customers may not initially understand the importance or even what we mean when we say we have customized products. Regularly in meetings I remind our officers to not focus on selling. Rather, make sure the customer has a clear understanding of what we have to offer. If we do that the customer will generally choose Banterra.” Shop owners generally need to add equipment to grow their business. This requires the company either deal with their local banker or go to a leasing company. Local bankers are typically generalists, not really manufacturing experts, and will typically want at least 20% down after a lengthy approval process. The other available option is to get a referral from the equipment dealer and seek to do a lease or EFA (Equipment Finance Agreement). In most cases the Banterra simple-interest loan product is a much better option for our customers than a lease or EFA. There

are many reasons why customers prefer not to do a lease or EFA and Banterra enjoys the opportunity to explain the difference. Manufacturers make it easy for Banterra to offer convenient banking. They don’t handle cash daily, therefore they rarely have a need to go to a branch. Most transactions are completed digitally and Banterra prides themselves on the quality of their Cash Management products. “Customers really have no reason to come to a branch, because we bring the branch to their desk,” said VanDaele. While Banterra welcomes customers to their retail banking facilities in the Valley and also has approvals for continued growth if needed, the long-term goal is to assist customers using Banterra’s digital products. With this, customers can enjoy the convenience of doing all of their banking needs online or by mobile device from wherever they are, saving them both time and money. VanDaele summarizes Banterra’ success by thanking the customers. “We really appreciate our customers in the Western USA that have embraced our business model and are grateful that we put it together for them. Customers value that we are one of the few banks that did not need or take a bailout in the banking crisis. We are privately-held, just like most of our customers. Company owners enjoy dealing with bankers that understand their business and have authority to make decisions. Business owners are busy people and they appreciate the way we approach service. We are extremely happy with our growth in this region and we expect to continually expand for years to come.” Banterra Bank-Machine Tool Finance Division P-480- 645-9005 E-machinetool@banterra.com banterramachinetool.com Con’t Next Page A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

MEET BANTERRA’S NEWEST UTAH TEAM MEMBER Late last year, Banterra brought Jeremy Lowry onto the team to support commercial customers throughout Utah. In the Salt Lake City area office, Jeremy has a large commercial banking team to support customers, and he will work with John VanDaele, who will support Banterra’s manufacturing customers. Jeremy brings many years of banking/finance experience to Banterra’s customers. Over the past two decades, he has held senior management positions at Fortis Private Bank, Zions Bank; and U.S. Bank. He earned his B.A. in Economics and Political Science from the University of Utah. In Jeremy’s spare time, he is a volunteer Planning Commissioner for the City of Murray.

HEAR FROM SOME OF BANTERRA’S CUSTOMERS “I’ve been in business for more than three decades now. Prior to working with John VanDaele at Banterra Bank, a few years ago I tried to use a large bank to finance a machine. This was my first time trying to purchase a machine with financing. It was so difficult and there was so much paperwork that I just cancelled with them. Then, three or four years ago, I wanted to try to secure financing once again for a machine. One of my colleagues at a large machine tool auction house told me to call John VanDaele at Banterra in Illinois. In his words, “John will take care of you.” John helped me to get funding and he made it so easy! Working with John is like banking used to be – it is built on trust and relationships. I just can’t say enough good things about John and Banterra.” Jim, Machine Shop Owner A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

“I have used other banks in the past, and what I can say is the other banks just weren’t equipment people. Banterra is the best ever. They always get my financing done quickly and with minimal paperwork. Actually, the entire Banterra team, from the Management team from Headquarters to the back office, is all outstanding. When I am purchasing a new machine, I send Banterra the equipment quote, and a couple of days later I have the paperwork to sign. It is just that easy.” Rob, Precision Machine Shop Owner “I wouldn’t be here today without Banterra’s support. My first interaction with Banterra was through a promotion on a Samsung lathe I purchased. I didn’t know the individuals from Banterra until I contacted them early in COVID about potentially needing some help with my loan. It turns out I didn’t need it, but that is when I got to know John and Drew. Since then, I have purchased several new machines, all financed through Banterra. Knowing that Banterra has my back helps me to have complete confidence in spending money to grow my business, whether it is buying new machinery, bringing on new employees, or adding floor space. Today, I am working with them on a line of credit that will actually even increase my ability to make capital purchases real time. Banterra Bank believes in manufacturing, and they are so knowledgeable about our industry. I was doing business with a well-known bank until recently, and when it came time to look for financing for new machines, they wouldn’t even return my phone calls. John stops over here regularly and he and Drew even scheduled a meeting with the bank president. You don’t get this kind of attention from the average bank. I recommend Banterra to everyone I meet; they are just that outstanding. Moving all of my banking to Banterra is part of my growth plan. It is just so exciting to have a banker who understands and shares your vision.” Bill, Precision Machine Shop Owner

Ball Aerospace-built NASA astrophysics observatory launched to study X-rays from black holes A NASA satellite, made by Ball Aerospace to study some the most exotic phenomena in the universe, launched into orbit last month atop a SpaceX rocket. A Fa l c o n 9 ro c ke t blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer astrophysics observatory made in Boulder by Ball Aerospace.

“By measuring X-ray polarization with spatial, spectral and temporal resolution, we will gain a far better understanding of the geometry of extreme magnetic fields over a wide range of spatial scales, from the polar jets of active galactic nuclei to the near-surface of extremely magnetic neutron stars called magnetars.” The gases surrounding such bodies become superheated and their magnetic fields shaped in unusual ways. The SpaceX rocket released IXPE into an orbit about 372 miles above the equator, 33 minutes after liftoff. The spacecraft’s solar arrays unfurled and IXPE began communicating with the ground, NASA said. Ball Aerospace, a division of Broomfield-based Ball Corp., built the spacecraft body and its electrical and mechanical systems, then integrated its instruments, testing the satellite and readying it to be launched. The IXPE’s satellite operations will be managed by the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, or LASP, at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Overall, including the SpaceX launch, the IXPE mission is estimated to cost $188 million. The mission was done in an international partnership with the Italian Space Agency. NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, built the IXPE satellite’s three X-ray telescopes while the Italian Space Agency contributed IXPE’s polarization detectors. “IXPE represents another extraordinary first,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s science mission directorate. “Each NASA spacecraft is carefully chosen to target brand new observations enabling new science, and IXPE is going to show us the violent universe around us — such as exploding stars and the black holes at the center of galaxies — in ways we’ve never been able to see it.” Ball Aerospace has a role in another high-profile launch this month.

The spacecraft, known as IXPE, is meant to examine polarized X-ray radiation from super novas, massive black holes and extremely magnetic neutron stars, and yield new understanding of high-energy celestial bodies.

NASA and the European Space Agency’s James Webb Space Telescope, the powerful instrument meant to surpass the Hubble telescope, launched aboard an Arianne 5 rocket from French Guiana on Dec. 18.

“IXPE is going to provide unprecedented insight into how the universe works,” said Makenzie Lystrup, vice president and general manager for Ball Aerospace, in a statement.

January 2022 Business Conditions Report: Despite Supply-Chain Challenges, Metalformers’ Optimism Increases Metalforming companies express increased optimism for improved business conditions during the first quarter of the year, according to the January 2022 Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) Business Conditions Report. Prepared monthly, the report provides an economic indicator for manufacturing, sampling 111 metalforming companies in the United States and Canada. PMA’s January report shows that 37% of metalforming companies anticipate an increase in general economic activity in the next three months (increasing from 27% in December), 56% expect no change (compared to 57% last month) and 7% predict a decrease in activity (compared to 16% in December). Forty-six percent of respondents reported an increase in lead times, down from 50% in December. “‘Perseverance’ is a word that defines PMA members,” said PMA President David Klotz. “Despite the challenges of raw material shortages, supply chain disruptions, workforce

retention issues and, of course, a global pandemic, our members continue to manufacture the products and parts needed to keep the economy moving. Members are beginning the year with optimism for our industry and the economy. Hopefully, our elected leaders in Washington, D.C., will enact policies that grow our manufacturing base and help our members continue to provide jobs and economic benefits to local communities across the country.” Metalformers also forecast an improvement in incoming orders in the next three months, with 43% expecting an increase in orders (compared to 34% in December), 45% predicting no change (compared to 49% last month) and only 12% anticipating a decrease in orders (compared to 17% in December). Current average daily shipping levels rose slightly in January, with 41% of survey respondents reporting an increase (compared to 39% in December), 45% reporting no change (compared to 41% last month) and 14% reporting a decrease (compared to 20% in December). Four percent of responding metalforming companies had a portion of their workforce on short time or layoff in January, compared to two percent in December. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

NTMA-A Valuable Resource for Business Growth and Survival By: Reid Leland; LeanWerks; NUNTMA Trustee LeanWerks joined the NTMA in 2009 after Matt Wardle brought the new NTMA President at that time, Dave Tilstone, to visit my shop. We had a great conversation about the NTMA and the travails of running a privately help precision machine shop. I was so taken with Dave and Matt’s insights about what they saw in LeanWerks and what they shared about their experiences in precision manufacturing that I knew I had to be a part of this group. But, in 2009, like so many shops and businesses at that time, LeanWerks was struggling and reduced to essential spending only. After much hand wringing and scraping the bottom of the coffers, LeanWerks joined the newly formed Northern Utah Chapter of the NTMA, and it has been well worth every cent. By 2010, LeanWerks was back in growth mode, and I was excited to attend my first NTMA Fall Conference, which happened to be in Colorado Springs that year. At that conference I didn’t know anybody except Matt and Dave, but they introduced me to host of other members and NTMA staff. Between the business development sessions, educational speakers, moderated roundtable, and social events, it was a learning and networking bonanza. There I met Grady Cope, President of Reata Engineering in Denver CO, Dan Bagley, Principal of B&B Management Labs in Pittsburg PA, and Roger Atkins, VP of MIC Group in Brenham, TX – Three people who helped me change the course of LeanWerks either by sending us work when we needed it most, business and marketing advisory services, or friendly encouragement and support through tough times. a conference since and never come home without some great new connections and ideas to implement. Our Northern Utah chapter has been a great source of value as well. Our chapter meetings and mini conferences help us keep competitive and develop our up-andcoming shop leaders. And, like the National Conferences, the networking is amazing. We also get great value from the Executive Compensation survey and Operating Costs survey, two phenomenal guideposts for running a shop that are worth the cost of membership on their own. I have also found numerous partners in our chapter with whom to collaborate on projects that LeanWerks cannot perform the entire scope of work. Along those lines, my NUNTMA network keeps me in the know on our process houses: plating, heat treating, and NDT – Critical information for successful planning and execution jobs. I am talking about the value of the NTMA and have not even mentioned the immense support provided through the pandemic in everything from ERC to PPP, and from OSHA rulesA Zto Executive Orders. Giant Self-Driving, Electric Haulers Coming To Colorado Gold Mine One of Colorado’s most historic gold rush sites is going high tech. Newmont Corp., the Denver-based international gold giant, will start changing how it hauls ore at its lone Colorado mine next year and transition to using giant electric, self-driving trucks. In 2022, the company will start adding as many as 16 self-driving haulage trucks at the company’s Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine operations in the mountains southwest of Colorado Springs. Newmont plans to begin automated haulage and develop the

necessary sensors and other infrastructure at the open pit CC&V Gold Mine through 2023. Then the mine will transition over three years to a fully electrified, advanced version of the haulage system under a development partnership with Peoria, Illinoisbased Caterpillar Inc. toward which Newmont is investing an initial $100 million. The $150 million investment in autonomous vehicles there experienced complications related to severe weather and reduced mine production. That experience will inform autonomous vehicle introduction at CC&V, Boone said. Gold has been mined from the peaks above the towns of Cripple Creek and Victor since the 1850s. Production from numerous mines in the area peaked at the end of that century, and the underground mining consolidated in the ensuing decades and transitioned after the 1960s to the surface mining Newmont operates there today. CC&V has the second-highest cost to sustain the mining operation per ounce of gold produced among Newmont’s 17 mine sites globally, meaning added efficiency would provide a big benefit. Over the past several years, many organizations turned to cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) software for a more secure and reliable way to map out and oversee supply chain operations. Mobile support for ERP solutions is becoming ubiquitous, especially as organizations continue to operate in a remote or hybrid environment. 2021 underscored the ability to access critical information in real time, from anywhere.

US Air Force Boosts Funding To Boom Supersonic, Eyes Military Uses For Its Super-Fast Airliners

The funding will accelerate Overture’s design and development, backing things such as wind tunnel testing and propulsion system definition, the company said. The plane, which Boom Aerospace aims to begin manufacturing in 2025 and have flying commercially in 2029, is designed to fly at Mach 1.7, twice the speed of the fastest airliners today. It will also use sustainable aviation fuel. The new military funding comes through the AFVentures division of the Air Force’s AFWERX program, which is designed to accelerate development of technologies that could be useful to the military. It expands on Boom Supersonic’s existing funding from the military branch. The Air Force and Department of Defense, in September 2020, started looking at the company’s supersonic airliner model as a potential executive transport aircraft that could be used by the U.S. president, military leaders, diplomats and possibly in civilian relief functions. Boom Supersonic is a product of the Mountain View, California-based Y Combinator startup accelerator. It has raised more than $270 million from investors and attracted several aerospace industry veterans to work there. It’s currently scouting locations for its first factory that will make Overture aircraft.

U.S. to Replace Steel Tariffs on Japan with Tariff Rate Quotas

On February 7, 2022, the U.S. and Japan announced an agreement to replace the current 25 percent tariffs on imported Japanese steel with a tariff rate quota system similar to the one that took effect for the European Union on January 1, 2022. Effective April 1, 2022, the new agreement with Japan will allow U.S. businesses to import 1.25 million metric tons annually, after which, the 25 percent tariffs will resume on the category of product shipped to the U.S. The deal does not cover Japanese aluminum, which is still subject to a 10 percent tariff.
