For several years, I was active in a local machining apprenticeship program. It always surprised me that once we vetted a person for the program (i.e. they passed an aptitude test as well as an in-person interview), we often couldn’t find a machine shop willing to take the apprentice. This was particularly vexing since one of the biggest challenges small manufacturing entities face is finding and retaining employees. Another example, years before, while I worked at Intel, I tried to bring on a college student into our marketing department. This intern would be unpaid, she would cost nothing to our department, and our manager didn’t want to make the commitment. “It’s too much work mentoring an apprentice.”
The reality is that if you run a department or a company, you should be actively engaged in mentoring. It is key to the future of your business. The benefits of mentoring are vast, for both the person being mentored, the person doing the mentoring, and the organizations they work at. Countless studies have been carried out on the positive effects mentoring can have, from confidence, to mental health, to camaraderie.
Mentors set examples for the individuals they are mentoring; they relate wisdom gained over their years of experience and they allow the person being mentored (the mentee) to feel more confident and welcome in the organization.
They dynamics of a mentor-mentee relationship are by nature different than those of a boss-employee relationship. In the latter, the boss is the authority who doles out directives and tasks. In the mentor-mentee relationship, a mentor can share experiences to enrich the mentee, but the mentee can also voice their own experiences with the mentor, who functions as a confidant. The mentor-mentee relationship is also more open, allowing the mentee to seek advice or test out ideas, whereas the boss is normally less approachable.
When my son graduated from college and went to work for Praxair, he was immediately thrown into several areas of Praxair’s business in their formal Intern program that lasted for 1 year. The experience was so positive for his initial entrée into the business world. In comparison, I have met many new graduates who began their careers at large entities, and they felt completely lost without a mentor or formal internship program.
Mentoring has historically been seen pretty much as a one-sided relationship, where the mentor offers themselves and the mentee profits with advice, insights, etc. Today, though, the benefits for the mentor can be just as good as they are for the mentee. The mentee is typically young and has been immersed in new technologies. The mentor has the ability to utilize these talents to learn new technologies. Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric, popularized ‘reverse mentoring’ so that GE’s senior executives could become adept at new technologies.
Until next issue, I encourage you to test out mentoring. You will not only be providing a rewarding experience for your seasoned employees, but you will expedite the learning curve for the newer team member. As an added bonus, you will likely increase the morale and retention of your team. And as always, God bless our troops.

Addressing these bottlenecks at this pivotal juncture in the fabricating process is paramount, as it directly influences downstream operations and the overall process times.
Automating the supply of raw materials to the laser cutter
Automation enters the scene as a game-changer, particularly in material supply. Consider the scenario when cutting programs are released to the laser cutting machine for processing. In traditional setups, human intervention is required to retrieve raw materials from a storage area, often utilizing a forklift. The time accumulated in performing this action for each material changeover can be substantial, especially in high-mix environments with frequent daily changeovers. This manual intervention becomes a critical bottleneck.
However, with an automated material storage system in place, this bottleneck is effectively eliminated. Multiple material types and thicknesses can be supplied seamlessly across various machines. The beauty of automation lies in its ability to seamlessly communicate with the laser cutting machine. As programs are released, communication with the material storage
system is automatic, and the subsequent material order can be delivered while the machine is still processing the last sheet of the previous order. This synchronized movement of raw materials ensures a continuous supply, eliminating waiting times and optimizing production efficiency.
Automating the laser cutting machine material loading process
Automation plays a pivotal role in the material loading process. Once the laser cutting machine is presented with the raw material stack, automating the loading process becomes imperative. In an automated setup, loading the material is an integral part of the automatic sequencing tied to the machine’s material request. No longer does one need to wait from sheet to sheet or from order to order. Sheets are efficiently loaded onto secondary shuttle tables while the laser cutter is seamlessly cutting on the primary table. However, a crucial sequence must occur between loading and unloading: the timely unloading of cut materials. Failure to unload the cut material promptly results in accumulating waiting times, disrupting the flow of operations.

Phoenix market ahead in the national industrial rankings even as e-commerce and logistics started to slow down in the past year across the U.S.
Automating the laser cutting machine material unloading and parts sorting process
The Phoenix metro’s large labor pool and proximity to larger markets with R&D systems have attracted employers to the area as well.
Here enters the significance of automating the material unloading and parts sorting process. Automating the material unloading process is not just desirable but crucial. It is the linchpin upon which the loading and cutting processes hinge. Without timely unloading, a bottleneck is created, impeding the entire workflow. Addressing this challenge necessitates a thoughtful approach. Two methods of practice: unloading the entire cut sheet with parts using an unload fork system or having the parts unloaded and stacked using an automated sorting system for the parts and a fork system to remove the material skeleton when completed.
Newmark found that the Phoenix market had nearly 75,000 advanced manufacturing workers as of 2023, although finding the labor to fill the new jobs will be a challenge across all markets, especially in smaller regions that do not have as diverse economies.
Growth is expected to continue for Phoenix and other markets in manufacturing as major projects are built out because of ancillary demand and third-party vendors that want to be close to the manufacturers.
Hess said companies are mostly looking for communities that have a sustainable plan and visions for partnerships and strategies to address quality of life, infrastructure, housing and more.
“There some challenges out there but I think Phoenix is always going to be a top 10 metro in the United States in the years to come,” Hess added. High-tech and digitalization such as semiconductors, automotive and transportation, energy and biomanufacturing are four of the main manufacturing sectors driving much of the growth.
The system involving automated sorting proves to be efficient and transformative. The automated system separates cut parts from the sheet material based on the order they belong to. Similar parts are organized into neat stacks for subsequent fabricating processes. By reducing manual intervention and minimizing errors in stacking similar part revisions, the automated sorting system significantly reduces process times, enhancing efficiency and throughput.
“Phoenix isn’t immune to the challenges of the greater advanced manufacturing sector,” Berthelette said. “Where Phoenix may excel is the diversity of its economy — it’s very large, there’s a lot of different industries there, the population growth is very fast.”
sustained business growth. By mitigating these bottlenecks, fabricators can deliver on their promises with greater precision, ensuring that customer delivery dates are met consistently. This newfound precision not only enhances operational efficiency but also bolsters profitability. Inaccurate job quotes, a common consequence of overlooking these material handling bottlenecks, can erode profits significantly. By addressing these variabilities and accurately reflecting them in job quotes, businesses can maintain healthy profit margins, contributing to long-term sustainability and growth.
Senate GOP Wants Changes to House-passed Bipartisan Tax Deal; Urge Senate to Act NOW
In Q3 2023, the manufacturing sector made up nearly 12% of the industrial inventory under construction in metro Phoenix, according to Newmark. In Austin, another major industrial market, manufacturing made up 13.5% of projects under construction in the same time period.

at the upcoming AAOS and RAPID shows.
Renishaw’s new TEMPUS™ technology enables users of RenAM 500 series metal additive manufacturing (AM) systems to reduce build times by up to 50 percent. The technology uses advanced scanning algorithms that sequence the layer data in a way that maximizes productivity while maintaining part quality. The optimization suits some part geometries more than others, but all geometries can see some productivity benefits. Parts with thin, vertical features, for example, are likely to experience proportionally higher productivity savings. This new technology will be on display in February at the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons trade show (February 12-16 in San Francisco) and in April at the RAPID show (April 23-25 in Anaheim, CA).
TEMPUS technology is standard with the new RenAM 500 Ultra system, as well as advanced process monitoring software. The combination of significantly reduced build times and detailed build insights means that the RenAM 500 Ultra delivers cost-effective, reliable additive manufacturing for metal component production. Existing RenAM 500 series customers can access TEMPUS technology as a paid-for upgrade, helping them to make the most of their machine investment.

While traditional powder bed systems require the powder recoater to fully distribute powder before the layer can be consolidated, TEMPUS technology fires the lasers as the recoater is moving. The patented technology employs seamless communication between advanced software and hardware components to synchronize the system lasers with the powder recoater, removing up to nine seconds of build time from every layer. With builds frequently containing thousands of layers, this can reduce total build times by tens of hours. Yet crucially, there is no reduction in part quality.
For uses in consumer electronics and computing, Renishaw has entered into an exclusive partnership agreement with metal component expert Alloyed, which has been using TEMPUS technology since 2021. “Reducing cost per part is critical to the wider adoption of AM technology,” explained Louise Callanan, Director of Additive Manufacturing at Renishaw. “The dominant contributing factor to part

Electric Vehicle Maker Acquires Large Site In West
Colorado Company Receives $90m In Federal Incentives For Expansion
Valley
Approximately $90 million in federal incentives will be coming to a Colorado Springs business.
Microchip manufacturer Microchip Technology signed a preliminary memorandum of terms with the U.S. Department of Commerce to receive $162 million in federal incentives to support the company’s semiconductor supply chain.
Arizona-based vehicle maker Nikola Corp. quietly purchased nearly 1,000 acres in the Phoenix metro at the end of September for $16.5 million, according to Maricopa County records.
Nikola acquired the 920-acre site through Phoenix Hydrogen Hub LLC from Hardison Farms on Sept. 30, real estate database Vizzda shows. George Quinif of Peak Group LLC represented Nikola in the sale.
The massive site is located at 28702 W. Patterson Road in south Buckeye just west of State Route 85 near the Arizona Department of Corrections Lewis Prison, which is one of the largest prisons in the state and houses more than 4,400 inmates.
The $162 million total will be split between Microchip’s Colorado Springs facility and Gresham, Oregon, campus. Approximately $90 million will go toward modernizing and expanding the company’s Colorado Springs campus while the remaining $72 million will go to expand its fabrication facility in Oregon.
The sale comes after Nikola made multiple announcements that it planned to break ground on a hydrogen production hub in Arizona. The company’s CEO said in August that Nikola would start construction on the new facility by the end of this year but did not disclose the location.
Microchip Technology manufactures microcontroller units and mature-note semiconductors used in products like electric vehicles, airplanes, cell phones, washing machines and other aerospace, defense and medical goods. The company is headquartered in Chandler, Arizona, and has offices in cities
According to the Arizona Corporation Commission, Corey Hessen and Omar Khayum, senior vice president and vice president of Canada-based TC Energy, respectively, are the managers of Phoenix Hydrogen Hub LLC. Oil and gas giant TC Energy partnered with Nikola last year to develop large-scale hydrogen production hubs across the U.S. and Canada.
across the U.S., including Colorado Springs and Boulder.
The incentive is part of the CHIPS and Science Act, which authorized $280 billion in tax credits, loans and research and development programs to bolster the manufacturing of microchips and semiconductor chips stateside.
Nikola hasn’t confirmed, though, whether it plans to build a hydrogen production hub in Buckeye. Nikola said it has no comment about the Buckeye land sale or its plans for the property. The city of Buckeye said nothing has progressed with the company beyond negotiations.
The automaker is currently producing battery electric vehicles and has produced several alpha prototypes of its fuel cell electric vehicles, which run on hydrogen. Nikola is planning to build out a hydrogen fueling network to support its vehicles. Its first three locations will be established in California.
“Microchip’s fabs in Colorado and Oregon, among others, perform specialized manufacturing as well as additional reliability and safety qualification for products designed for such missioncritical markets,” Ganesh Moorthy, president and CEO of Microchip, said in a statement. “The funding Microchip is proposed to receive from the CHIPS and Science Act would be a direct investment to strengthen our national and economic security. As a U.S.based company, Microchip’s operations will continue to bolster the national semiconductor supply chain, as well as develop and expand our workforce.”
In addition to the fueling stations, the

across six buildings, according to the company’s website. Moorthy said the company has already made significant investments in its 50-acre Colorado Springs campus. This will be the company’s third Colorado Springs expansion, according to Johnna Reeder Kleymeyer, president and CEO of Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC.
The company will expand several product lines, increasing its capacity by a factor of three to seven, according to a statement from Gov. Jared Polis’ office. The new jobs created will have an average salary of $75,000 — 118% of the average annual wage in El Paso County.
“The $90 million grant from the CHIPS and Science Act further supports our $940 million modernization and expansion,” Moorthy said in a statement. “We also anticipate the expansion will create 400 additional jobs in the region.”By Cassidy Ritter – Denver Business Journal

A new company could land a $371 million contract with Denver International Airport and take over shuttle bus services to public and employee parking lots if a proposed contract receives city council approval.
DIA also plans to use the contract to test electric shuttle buses to see how well they can handle climate conditions near DIA.
The proposal, presented by airport leadership to the city council’s business committee this week, will advance to the full council for consideration. Although the contract would not take effect until February 2025, DIA officials told committee members they need roughly a year to procure new buses planned as part of the contract and that the new company needs time to negotiate new agreements with union employees.
The contract with LAZ Parking Midwest would last for seven years and includes the option for three oneyear extensions. The agreement’s cost-plus structure would require DIA to reimburse LAZ for expenses incurred during the contract — such as operations, bus maintenance, and payroll — and a flat management fee for the contract’s seven- to 10-year duration.
LAZ would provide the vehicles and maintain them. The contract calls for procuring 65 new 40-foot natural gas shuttles, while DIA plans to contribute eight smaller EV buses with the help of a grant from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
DIA is winding down a $190 million eight-year contract with ABM, airport spokesperson Stephanie Figueroa said by email. The original agreement with ABM was for a five-year contract with two one-year extensions, although the airport added another year while it undertook the competitive RFP process.
The difference in contract amounts is partially due to “a substantial increase in investment in employee compensation packages” to lure top talent, the investment in new buses, and the addition of the technology that will track buses, according to DIA.
In a statement to the Denver Business Journal, an ABM spokesperson said the company is one of the largest parking services providers in the U.S. and has been proud to serve DIA and Denver for 25 years.

‘Made in USA’ Works Well for Us
More manufacturers could benefit, if they put the effort into calculating the deeper competitive advantages and savings.
By: Patrick Reagan
Employment in U.S. manufacturing currently stands at just under 13 million workers. Manufacturing’s peak of 19.5 million jobs occurred in June 1979.
While some of this 40-year decline resulted from the change in skills manufacturers needed from workers over time, another catalyst is the ruthless race to find cheaper labor, parts and production in other countries.
In his book “Made in the USA: The Rise and Retreat of American Manufacturing,” author Vaclav Smil points out that “an excessive dependence on imports, and the systematic outsourcing of entire industries, will eventually weaken the strongest economies.”
970-667-5320 Fax:
(970)
How Millennials’ Technology Expectations Can Help Save Manufacturing
U.S.-made is a point of pride for me and many manufacturers. “Made in the U.S.A.” means more than just higher quality. Made in the U.S.A. means stronger supply chains and potentially a lower total cost to operate my business. The U.S.-made label also entails providing better-paying jobs for American workers who can thrive.
Millennials’ technology expectations have been shaped by smartphones, Facebook and digital media – in other words, by easy and ubiquitous connectivity. It’s not surprising, then, that traditional manufacturing systems can seem as retro as waiting for dial-up internet to connect. And that’s bad for the manufacturing sector, because its skills gap is looming large.
Making products is a passion of mine, especially the operational side of manufacturing. When given a clear goal and the standards and resources to get the job done, the American worker is the best in the world.
A joint study by the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte Consulting projects a surge of nearly 3.5 million open manufacturing jobs created over the next decade. Some of the empty slots will come by way of retiring baby boomers, while others are related to new positions created as a result of natural business growth, the report found. What the report also predicts: As conditions stand now, 2 million of those jobs will go unfulfilled. In other words, the need for the manufacturing sector to appeal to Millennials – the generation typically defined as those born between 1981 and 1997 – is both critical and a very tall order.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, to call a product U.S.-made, it “must be ‘all or virtually all’ made in America.” The FTC goes on to say that the “product should contain no — or negligible — foreign content.”
Our company fully follows this guidance and produces what our customers say is a superior product.
While it would be cheaper to buy our aluminum castings and extrusions, fittings and rivets from China, Vietnam or Turkey, we buy from U.S.-based suppliers. A cheaply made rivet could be a weak point in an otherwise quality product that carries our name and our country’s name. That said, our product does contain some foreign content because we cannot buy domestically produced aluminum ingots; they aren’t mined in the U.S. The U.S.based company we rely on purchases those ingots from countries like Turkey but does the extrusion in Ohio.
Indeed, manufacturing still has a negative image among younger generations, experts say. In a 2015 public perception of manufacturing study, also by The Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte, respondents ages 19 to 33 ranked manufacturing as their lowest preference in terms of potential career choices.
Manufacturing’s image problem is complex and in, some aspects, based on false assumptions. But one real obstacle is that some manufacturing systems can seem antiquated, and it’s an issue that many manufacturers and related organizations are already addressing.

Daimler and partners Cummins and Paccar said they expect to invest $2 billion to $3 billion into the Accelera joint venture, which will supply cells for electric commercial vehicles and industrial applications.
If you pay for quality, quality will pay you back. Buying American-made quality often is less expensive over time. A long-term, strategic mindset including TCO may well reverse the effect that buying cheap parts has had on our economy and manufacturing industry.

The Company Continuously Invests In the Technology Their Customers Require For Superior Products
It’s not often that you find a shop that not only specializes in high precision grinding, but also offers in-house Swiss Machining, all certified to ISO 9001/ AS9100. Says founder Wendie Flitton, “We can buy the material, grind it, machine it, and send it to heat treat, and then finish OD or centerless grind the part.” She added, “Our Swiss Screw Machine capabilities allow us to cut costs on many parts that need to be machined and ground, and they simplify logistics for our customers when we can do more in-house.”
Interestingly, the Woman-owned, Family-owned and HUB-Zone occupied company, founded in 1990 in a 1000 square foot facility, was initially an industrial blade and knife grinding business that also offered sales of replacement knives. At its inception, the company was named ‘Superior Grinding & Sales, Inc.’
And though they continue to provide their customers with outstanding services and stocking many types of replacement knives and parts for the bindery, metal and wood industries, with the expansion of offerings to include Swiss Machining, the company renamed itself Superior Grinding & Swiss Machining. The company is considered a ‘go to’ company when your parts are
extremely close tolerance and difficult to manufacture (they have the ability to hold tolerances to .0001). Superior Grinding’s customers include such industry greats in the medical, aerospace and defense, and communications industries, including Ethicon (Johnson & Johnson), Northrup Grumman, Flowserve and Peterson Company, amongst others.
Grinding was how the company got its start, and today they offer virtually every type of grinding, including CNC ID/OD, Angled, Surface, Blanchard & Centerless Grinding. Jeff Flitton, partner with Wendie (both pictured to the left), says, “Growth has been solid for us these past years, and though we’ve always offered Centerless grinding, we expanded recently with 2 new Cincinnati Centerless grinders. These new machines are bigger, faster, and stronger, and most importantly, they give us confidence that we will be able to meet our customers’ delivery schedules even if we have a machine breakdown.” Jeff says that the fact that Cincinnati has one of the broadest product ranges in the industry, provides world class grinding tools that are manufactured in the USA, made the decision to purchase the 2 new centerless grinders from them was a straightforward, easy decision.
As is part of their business philosophy, the company has consistently reinvested in the business, recognizing that this is one of the key attributes that their customers appreciate. Jeff says that in their Swiss Machining division, they most recently added the Tsugami B038T Turning Center. He adds, “Tsugami’s B038T combines the precision, accuracy and speed of a high performance Swiss Type Lathe with the flexibility and additional rotary tool capability of a turning center with a turret. In this unique combination, up to 13 tools on the tool posts (gang, front and rear), plus 32 stations on the turret combine to machine complex parts in a single setup.”
A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain • 26 • March / Apr 2024
Long term team member Brian Jaensch says, “ The B038T is an extremely rugged, powerful Turning Center that can perform 7 different types of simultaneous machining operations involving the front, back and cross spindles. Since we needed a heavyweight performer to make short work of heavy milling, turning, drilling, tapping, hobbing and long thread whirling, the B038T was the right choice for us.”
Jeff says that they are extremely lucky to have assembled an outstanding team. “We have right around 25 employees, many long term, and we are blessed that we have assembled an outstanding team.” Kellie Addington, daughter of Jeff and Wendie, who runs the office, says, “We’ve been investing in our culture, building it over the past year, and it is paying off. We’re doing a much better job of listening to our employees, and one of the key requirements for many of our team members is flexibility — such as the ability to set start times based upon their lives. Our two newest hires say that this is the best place they’ve ever worked.”
Superior Grinding purchases superior machines, manufactured in the US and in Japan. They also embrace automation, and they regularly run medical parts 24x7, including lights out operation. Jeff says that they welcome part quantities in any size, saying, “We take on 5-10 piece orders and we just eclipsed 3 million parts for one of our customers.”
What else is new at Superior Grinding? They added horizontal machining to their capabilities with the purchase of an Okuma LB3000 EX II horizontal Lathe. Brian says, “LB3000 EX II is built on Okuma’s Thermo-Friendly Concept to ensure minimal thermal growth, and slanted box bed construction translates to unsurpassed quality and rigidity. Equipped with Okuma’s high-power, high-torque PREX motor, this machine delivers high-quality machining from heavy- to highspeed cutting.”
Brian says they also recently upgraded their grinding department with the Cincinnati #2. He says it is one of the most popular centerless grinders that Cincinnati created and for good reason. It is a very versatile machine for both infeed and thru-feed grinding, capable of handling a large range of common part sizes. He elaborates, “The beauty of precision centerless grinding is that the workpiece is held in place by the pressure of the rotating wheels. No fixturing is required, so the setup is simple and turnaround times are fast. And because the workpiece is rigidly supported, there is no deflection during the
grinding operation.”
The company upgraded their Inspection department with the Hexagon 4.5.4 Shop Floor (SF) coordinate measuring machine. Jeff says it excels in tough shop-floor conditions, adding that its most notable feature is its flexibility. “ We like that the 4.5.4 SF uses standard 110 volt outlets with no need for shop air. Its compact footprint and roll-around stand lets you easily move the SF series anywhere in the shop where precise dimensional inspection is required. “
Since Superior Grinding does a significant amount of work in the medical and aerospace/defense industries, they weren’t impacted negatively in revenues during the pandemic, Wendie says. “What happened, though”, she adds, “is that we gained new customers who made the decision to bring their manufacturing back from China.” Wendie says that these customers post-COVID, have continued to source some of the manufacturing through Superior Grinding. “Even if they went back to another country for manufacturing, they determined it was prudent to retain a local supplier for some portion of their manufacturing.” Jeff adds, “The China influence has been very good for our company.”

The company plans to work on new product development there, hiring engineers, technicians and customer support personnel. Toro’s center is expected to add as many as 45 employees beyond the 27 the company already has in the state.
Credit unions approved 40.2 percent of loan applications in August, a slight drop of one-tenth of a percent from July and a large drop from their all-time high of 57.9 percent in March 2012. By Anthony Noto – Reporter, New York Business Journal
The new site is expected to pay employees an average annual salary of $106,889, which would be nearly 180% of the county’s average wage.“Advanced manufacturing accounts for approximately 30% of Colorado’s economy. By choosing Weld County for expansion, Toro will continue to diversify this important industry and ensure that rural communities like Frederick benefit from good-paying jobs,” said Eve Lieberman, executive director of Colorado’s Office of Economic Development and International Trade.
The Colorado Economic Development Commission last April approved up to $519,626 in job-growth incentive tax credits the company can claim if it reaches job-creation milestones over an eight-year period.
The Toro Company chose Frederick over alternative locations in the company’s home state of Minnesota.
The R&D center’s opening exemplifies the town’s economic development emphasis, which has attracted aerospace and bioscience and other advanced manufacturers, said Frederick Mayor Tracie Crites, in a press release.
“By attracting high-quality employers to the region,

we are not only stimulating economic growth but also reaffirming Frederick’s position for innovative, cutting-edge opportunities that improve quality of life. Frederick has a growing community of advanced manufacturing that supports industries including aerospace, biosciences, and robotics,” she said.
Agilent Technologies, a biotech pharmaceutical producer, said a year ago it would invest as much as $725 million to expand its presence in Frederick, adding 160 new jobs.
The center’s opening comes three years after Toro acquired Lefthand Robotics Inc., a Longmont company that developed autonomous snow removers and lawn equipment.
Toro netted $329.7 million in profit from $4.5 billion in worldwide sales in its fiscal 2023, which ended Oct. 31. It spent $173.9 million on research and development that year, according to filings with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission. The company employed 10,706 people worldwide.
US Cutting Tool Orders Totaled $187.9 Million in December 2023, Bringing Total Up 6.9% From 2022
U.S. cutting tool consumption totaled $187.9 million, according to the U.S. Cutting Tool Institute (USCTI) and AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the Cutting Tool Market Report collaboration, was down 7.3% from November’s $202.7 million and down 0.3% when compared with the $188.4 million reported for December 2022. With a year-to-date total of $2.45 billion, 2023 is up 6.9% when compared to the same time period in 2022.
“With 2024 comes change and challenge,” stated Steve Boyer, president of USCTI. “The U.S. cutting tool industry will continue to see growth opportunities in aerospace, automotive, medical, and computer-related segments but slowing and declines in other markets. While forecasts initially anticipated interest rate declines as we moved into 2024, recent inflation indicators appear to temper those expectations. We enter the new year with a guarded view anticipating continued challenges and uneven growth.”
The Cutting Tool Market Report is jointly compiled by AMT and USCTI, two trade associations representing the development, production, and distribution of

cutting tool technology and products. It provides a monthly statement on U.S. manufacturers’ consumption of the primary consumable in the manufacturing process – the cutting tool. Analysis of cutting tool consumption is a leading indicator of both upturns and downturns in U.S. manufacturing activity, as it is a true measure of actual production levels.
Historical data for the Cutting Tool Market Report is available dating back to January 2012. This collaboration of AMT and USCTI is the first step in the two associations working together to promote and support U.S.-based manufacturers of cutting tool technology.
Equipment Finance Industry Confidence Higher in February
The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation (the Foundation) releases the February 2024 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) . The index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions
and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $1 trillion equipment finance sector. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market is 51.7, an increase from the January index of 48.6.
When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI-EFI survey respondent Jeffry Elliott, CLFP, President, Huntington Equipment Finance, said, “We believe there is a 50/50 chance of a recession this year, which will likely result in lower capex spending on equipment, at least in the first half or until interest rates decline. However, following the significant delay in equipment acquisitions last year, we still expect considerable activity this year, as equipment wears out and replacement can be delayed only so long. The speed of onshoring and reshoring also will determine the demand for acquiring equipment or capex. Fortunately, longterm growth prospects for the United States and North America are strong, and we think the largest-ever expansion in our nation’s history is on the horizon.”
February 2024 Survey Results: The overall MCI-EFI is 51.7, an increase from the January index of 48.6.
When asked to assess their business conditions over the next four months, 10.7% of the executives responding said they believe business conditions will improve over the next four months, a decrease from 20.7% in January. 82.1% believe business conditions will remain the same over the next four months, up from 62.1% the previous month.

With its robust C-frame construction, lightning-fast 4.5 second chip-to-chip tool changer, double-ended tilting table and enhanced rapid traverse rates –which add up to shorter non-cut times for the lowest part-cycle times – the VARIAXIS C-600 handles the most demanding jobs with its flexible, automation-ready design and a new MAZATROL SmoothAi CNC made for 5-axis machining. And it can handle what your rotary table HMCs take multiple setups to do in as few as one. BLAZING SPEED INCLUDED. INTRODUCING THE NEW VARIAXIS C-600 Find out everything that’s included with the new VARIAXIS C-600 at MazakUSA.com/VRX-C600. #MazakMeansMultitasking | MazakUSA.com | (859) 342-1700 CO, WY 888.289.9100 action-machinery.com UT, ID & MT 801.263.6403 smithmachinetools.com
