We are all creators, makers of many things. For every parent, perhaps the most important creation you helped to make was a child(ren).We are all repair people, as well. For some, it’s our livelihood. If we are in the medical field, our goal each and every day is to help repair people, to make them better, or at least more comfortable. And in the service field, this author puts it well, “Pouring espresso is an art, one that requires the barista to care about the quality of the beverage.” Howard Schultz Can you imagine if with some of your most important creations or repairs, your philosophy was “It’s good enough.” In the field of precision manufacturing, where many of our readers are designing and making parts that are used in airplanes, in medical devices, and for our troops,‘It’s good enough” can have very serious, even life threatening ramifications. In February, twice I traveled on new Boeing airplanes, and they still had that ‘new car smell’. I was very surprised to find on my 2nd new airplane, a Boeing 737, the rest room had several parts that had broken. The faucet on the sink was missing, and the toilet paper roll was dangling from the wall.While this was disturbing to note on a new plane, I am thankful that the faulty assembly was apparently contained to the rest room. It still made me ponder the quality of this particular Boeing and what indeed went wrong.

I meet and interview nearly 100 machine shops through the course of a year. In a typical interview the question of report cards comes up, particularly if the shop is ISO and/or AS9100 certified.

Most shops I interview have contacted me because they want to promote their growth, whether it’s a new machine, an anniversary, successful certification, etc. I mention this because I am typically interviewing shops that are doing things right. When I ask about their ‘Quality’ metrics, I am nearly always told that the shop is an ‘A’ student. When I ask about ‘on-time’ deliveries, some shop owners will tell me that their on-time scores are significantly lower, with a variety of factors influencing this. Precision parts often require outside processes, and this can impact a delivery. Customers can also request delivery dates that the machine shop tells them they can’t meet, and they are encouraged to bid on the work anyway. Product specifications or quantities can change. There are, in fact, many legitimate reasons why precision products can be delivered late. “People forget how fast you did a job but they remember how well you did it” ~Howard Newton

Quality products, on the other hand, must be consistently delivered to your customers. That is not to say products are always machined perfectly, but when an error occurs (hopefully on the rare occasion), it is the machine shop’s quality department that finds the defect. I mention ‘rare occasion’ because if you are scrapping many parts, your longevity as a business owner is very tenuous. In the words of an author unknown, “If you don’t have time to do it right you must have time to do it over.” Each and every one of us who creates or repairs anything in life must treat each project as if they are putting their stamp on it…their personal stamp of quality. And if we don’t do this, we should find something else to do. Other peoples’ lives may depend on this. “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” ~William A. The Brock Babb Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the National Tooling and Machining Foundation (NTMF) in support of students advancing their education and pursuing careers in manufacturing. The scholarship is named in honor and memory of Sergeant Brock A. the heavy lifting. Makers of durable goods increased payrolls by 18,000 jobs, according to a breakdown by industry sector issued today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The non-durable goods sector lost 3000 jobs. Within durable goods, the major gainers were transportation equipment, up 5700 jobs, and machinery, up 5400. However, one part of the transportation category — motorized vehicle and parts — lost 300 jobs. Other durable goods categories posting job gains included fabricated metal products (up 3100) and non-metallic mineral products (up 1900). Durable goods categories recording job losses included furniture, down 1300. The overall manufacturing job gain wasn’t as robust as recent months but still represented a solid gain. Manufacturing totaled 12.555 million on a seasonally adjusted basis in January.That was an increase from an adjusted 12.54 million in December and 12.369 million in January 2017. Total non-farm employment rose by 200,000 jobs last month, the bureau said in a statement. That was better than a forecast gain of 180,000 by economists polled by Reuters. If these tariffs are imposed, the U.S. will become an island of high steel prices resulting in our customers simply importing the finished part and threatening thousands of jobs across the United States in the steel consuming manufacturing sector. Trump Slaps SteepTariffs On ForeignWashing Machines And Solar Products President Donald Trump slapped steep tariffs on imports of washing machines and solar energy cells and panels, the first major step by the administration to erect the kind of trade barriers Trump has frequently said are necessary to protect manufacturers in the United States. White House advisers warned that additional trade measures related to steel, aluminum and other products from China could be coming, a signal that Trump is ratcheting up the protectionist policies he has long espoused as part of his “America First” approach. The imposition of tariffs will most likely exacerbate trade tensions with other nations, including China, and could result in an escalation of retaliatory trade measures against imports from the United States. Both China and South Korea harshly criticized the move, with both suggesting they could take their complaints to the World Trade Organization, which settles trade disputes. The decisions also seemed poised to ignite a wave of similar trade cases from other U.S. companies, which might be encouraged by Trump’s action. Protectionism was a defining theme of the populist presidential campaign in which Trump gleefully rebuffed the longstanding Republican embrace of free and open markets. Upon taking office, Trump pulled out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a 12-country trade deal, and threatened other actions, including a withdrawal from the North American Free Trade Agreement and the imposition of tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum. He has yet to make good on any of those threats. While the tariffs were welcomed by the companies that sought them, economists warned the levies could drive up prices for consumers and hurt some U.S. businesses. The solar industry has been split over the tariffs. Companies that develop large-scale solar farms, as well as purchasers of solar power such as retailers and tech companies, opposed the tariffs over concerns that they would cost them more money and make solar power less competitive with other energy sources. The trade cases rely on a littleused section of trade law that provides a “safeguard” for industries beset by imports — and that casts a wide net on products from around the world. The law has not been used to impose tariffs since 2002, when President George W. Bush clamped down on imports of steel. Still, that approach has shown mixed results.TheWorldTrade Organization ruled against the U.S. in 2003, and the Bush administration ultimately withdrew the measure under threat of retaliation. China hinted it could take a similar approach. “With regard to the wrong measures taken by the United States, China will work with other WTO members to resolutely defend our legitimate interests,” its Ministry of Commerce said in a statement. In both cases, trade officials said the safeguard measure was necessary because foreign producers were evading U.S. restrictions on imports from specific countries by hopscotching their factories around the globe.

Robert Lighthizer, the U.S. trade representative, said the president had decided to accept the recommendations of his trade advisers in imposing tariffs ranging from 15 percent to 50 percent on various imports. “The president’s action makes clear again that the Trump administration will defend American workers and businesses,” Lighthizer said. The administration was not alone in finding the imports harmful. The U.S. International Trade Commission, an independent body of trade officials, also examined the cases and found that imports were hurting domestic manufacturers. They also made several recommendations that ranged in severity; Trump ultimately opted for relatively str ingent measures after consulting with his own advisers. The president approved solar tariffs for the next four years, starting with levies of 30 percent that will ultimately fall to 15 percent. In each of the four years, the first 2.5 gigawatts of imported solar cells will be exempted from the tariff, an exception designed to ensure that existing solar module manufacturers in the United States can still access cheap supplies of cells. The company has six Ollis in production in Chandler, with the goal of making 50 Ollis by the end of 2018, said Jay Rogers, CEO and co-founder. This number is scaled down from the 120 Ollis announced in February. “We wanted to get more focused as it came to fundraising,” said Rogers during a tour at the Chandler facility. “Our Chandler microfactory can handle low-scale, replicable manufacturing.” Local Motors debuted its autonomous vehicle in June 2016. APS, First Solar Building Big Solar Battery Storage Project, Panel Field In Desert Arizona Public Service Co. and Tempe-based First Solar Inc. are building a 50-megawatt solar-powered battery west of Phoenix that will store extra electricity. APS — an arm of Phoenix-based Pinnacle West Capital Corp. — says it will use the power during the region’s scorching summer heat. First Solar will build the project. It will include a 65-megawatt solar field. The project will be built next to APS’ Redhawk Power Plant in Arlington, 52 miles west of Phoenix off Interstate 10. APS has inked a 15-year power-purchase agreement with First Solar. The Arizona utility plans to use energy stored in the battery during peak consumption times. Phoenix’s two electric companies — APS and Tempe-based Salt River Project — both posted record energy use last summer when temperatures hit or approached 120 degrees during an intense heat wave. APS officials say the First Solar deal is part of a larger 15-year plan that will involve more than 500 megawatts of battery-stored energy. “Partnering with an Arizona company such as First Solar to pair solar power with advanced battery storage is good for our customers and continues our state’s national leadership in clean energy innovation,” said Don Brandt, chairman, president and CEO of APS. Arizona is considered a big solar state with close to 300 days of sunshine annually. “First Solar has long been a global leader in the deployment of utility-scale solar,” said Mark Widmar, First Solar’s CEO. “Through this innovative project we are excited to partner with APS to demonstrate the capabilities of solar coupled with large-scale battery storage. Data Suggests Waymo Is King Of Autonomous Cars, With GM Making Big Strides

Alphabet self-driving car spinoff Waymo continues to lead the pack in autonomous car testing in California, completing some 352,000 miles on testing on public roads in 2017, according to new data from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Since its launch, Waymo has completed 4 million miles of autonomous driving in 25 cities, the company said , with nearly 2 million miles coming in the last 12 months alone. It says computer simulations completed 2.7 billion virtual miles in 2017.

Not only didWaymo complete more than twice as many miles of public road tests than its next closest competitor, General Motors Co., it also led in safety. Waymo’s fleet of 75 test cars collectively traveled around 960 miles per day in 2017. Safety drivers inside those cars were forced to take over control of the car just 63 times last year, meaning the cars traveled around 5,595 miles per safety disengagement, according to DMV data. That track record sharply contrasts with Mercedes-Benz, which tested three autonomous cars on California’s roads in 2017, driving a total of 1,087 miles. But the data suggests those miles were fraught with problems — with safety drivers taking over control of their cars 842 times, or roughly once every 1.3 miles. Fed Survey Finds Solid Growth And RisingWages The Federal Reserve says the economy was growing at a moderate pace at the start of the year, with the majority of business contacts optimistic about prospects for 2018. In its latest survey of business conditions nationwide, the Fed says that wages were rising at a modest pace. Some Fed districts were seeing a broader range of industries giving pay raises, especially in areas where employers are having a harder time filling positions. The Fed’s report, known as the Beige Book, will be used to guide discussions at the Fed’s next meeting on Jan. 30-31. The Fed is signaling it will boost rates three times in 2018. Avtek Industries, a superior precision machine shop, celebrated 30 years in business last year. Duane Rhode joined Avtek in its 2nd year and today Duane wholly owns it. Duane was a Journeyman tool and die maker, and after moving his family from Minnesota to Arizona (for our climate), went to work for Sperry Flight Systems. He left Sperry Flight systems after Honeywell bought it out and then joined Avtek. Today, Avtek is a very different company than the one Duane built up during the 1980s and 1990s. It still occupies the 7600 square foot temperature controlled facility that Duane designed and constructed in 1996. It still machines parts made from aluminum, stainless steel, alloy steel, tool steel, beryllium copper and plastics. It is still known for precision turning and milling, and their ability to make very difficult parts. The industries it serves are quite different than the early years, though. After the company went through the aerospace downturn, Duane made a decision to diversify Avtek’s customer base. Today, Avtek supports customers in such diverse sectors as industrial, semiconductor, commercial (including theme parks and actuators for police force training), space (their parts have gone into SpaceX, Virgin Galactic and many other spacecraft), medical, defense and aerospace. When asked what the most unusual/ exciting product made at Avtek was, Duane says, “The brain slicer. We made about 10 of these prototypes that were used to study the brain of Alzheimer patients who had passed away.” He added, “I am also very excited and proud that we made several parts for the Falcon 9 rocket and its Dragon Capsule that successfully launched in 2012 and is in orbit around the earth.” Another significant change in Avtek today is the employees. member. Duane mentored each and every one of us, and we all started in the machine shop.” Tonya is married to Lanny, who is Duane’s grandson. Tonya came to work for Avtek 11 years ago, and she started in the deburr department. Though today Tonya holds an office position, she is quite capable of running any of the CNC machines. And as is the case in small family owned businesses where each person wears many hats, Tonya is also the sales manager for the company. Other family members who are integral to the Avtek Industries team include: Sandra Rhode, Duane’s wife, who is the Secretary and Treasurer. Lanny, Duane’s grandson, who is one of the company’s programmers as well as a machinist and the Shop Foreman. Alicia Chadwick, Duane’s daughter, who is the Shop Supervisor and Quality Manager. Chris, Duane and Sandra’s son, who is a machinist.

Wyatt, Tonya and Lanny’s son, who is a machinist. Tamara Gordon, Duane’s niece, is lead deburr hand and quality inspector. Chantry Chadwick, Duane’s granddaughter, is a deburr hand. Tonya says Wyatt makes Avtek a company that has 4 generations working in it. Avtek supports just more than a dozen customers, and it keeps its customers to a workable number in order to provide superior customer support. Tonya says that Avtek typically manufactures parts in quantities that range from 200 to 1500, though they have been known to support prototypes in very low quantities. Tonya says, “Our On-Time and Quality report cards are outstanding.” Tonya shared a number of report cards, and one customer adds a 3rd metric to its ratings; ‘Responsiveness’. For this particular customer, a supplier must submit a plan for improvement should their score fall below 80. Avtek’s report cards all far exceeded this customer’s minimum requirements. As you can imagine, Avtek launched its business with a number of manual machines. Not only was this typical of the 1980s, but it was also what you would expect from a Journeyman tool and die maker. Nearly 2 decades ago, in 2001, Duane made the decision to purchase his first CNC lathe. Duane says, “I worked along side the machine shop when I was at Honeywell, so I knew the machinists well. When I made the decision to evaluate different CNC lathes, I called my prior colleagues at Honeywell. It was interesting that they didn’t have a Haas machine in the Honeywell shop, but that they highly recommended Haas.” Duane finished his analysis, and purchased his first CNC machine, a Haas SL20 with a bar feeder. (This first Haas machine is still working very well at Avtek, and on the previous page, left side, Duane is pictured in front of the machine with Ellison Machinery/ Haas Dealer Business Development Manager Chris Hansen). Tonya says, “Today we are a loyal Haas (Ellison Machinery) customer.” Duane added, “I have been 100% satisfied with Ellison Machinery, distributor for the Haas machines, and with the actual Haas machines.” Today, Avtek owns 9 Haas machine tools, including 5 lathes and 4 mills. Duane says that the Ellison Machinery/Haas service continues to be outstanding. “We have had very few issues that required service over the years, but when we do, they arrive next day to do the repair.” He added, “99% of the time the part needed to fix the machine is on the truck, but if it isn’t, we get it the next day as it is shipped from Haas’ headquarters in Oxnard, California.” Duane and Tonya both value the fact that the Haas machines are designed and manufactured in the USA.

Chris Hansen suppor ts Avtek for Ellison Machinery. Chris is a degreed manufacturing engineer, and is also a Certified Machine Tool Sales Engineer (CMTSE). Chris says, “There is a good reason why Avtek has very few service issues with their Haas machines, even the older ones.” He continued, “Their shop is immaculate and they take care of their machines. Sandia Labs Steps Up Small Business Focus When Dr. Stephen Younger, the relatively new director of Sandia National Laboratories, addressed the Economic Forum in Albuquerque, he stressed the role the labs play in national security. And the role Albuquerque plays in supporting the labs. “We touch every nuclear weapon,”Younger told the audience of about 150 business leaders gathered at Hotel Albuquerque to hear his first address to the group. “Just about anything you can think of in national security, Sandia has been involved in.” Sandia’s mission includes working on national security issues and developing advanced technologies. But it also has long been known as an economic driver for this state — and the small businesses that comprise New Mexico’s economic backbone. Sandia, based in Albuquerque, is homing in on small business, where it spends about $581 million of its $1 billion annual procurement budget. That’s a welcome adjustment. “We will increase small business procurement by 2 percent per year,”Younger said. In turn, Sandia expects its $3.17 billion budget for fiscal year 2017 to increase this year, he said. He also expects employment at Sandia to continue to grow by several hundred people this year. Sandia’s 2017 employment was 12,258 with 10,941 in New Mexico and 1,317 in California. Sandia’s New Mexico staff has increased by 3,000 since 2010, including 1,200 employees relocated to the state over the past five years. The average annual salary of a Sandian in New Mexico is just over $100,000, he shared.Younger used the Economic Forum event to announce a $50,000 donation to the United Way of Central New Mexico — part of the $1.4 million in corporate funds Sandia National Labs donates to the community. In the decade since the start of the Great Recession, industrial production (e.g. manufacturing, mining and electricity production) has been a political football for both the left and right. It’s time to stop playing that game, and a good way to start is to review some facts about these industries.

We are, right now, at the peak of industrial production in the US. The industrial production index peaked in December 2007, then dropped by 15% by the summer of 2009. It took five years to recover to a second peak in 2015. As the world economy dipped in 2015 and 2016, so too did US industrial production.We are back at a record level of industrial output. It’s worth noting that total US industrial production is more than twice what it was in 1979, when employment peaked. And yes, of course, that is adjusted for inflation. Other measures tell the same story. Inflation-adjusted manufacturing GDP will have peaked in fourth quarter 2017, both in dollar and quantity index measures. Importantly, new data value-added manufacturing offers an even more interesting insight. Value-added is a measure of production that subtracts goods used in production. By calculating this across all US manufacturing, we omit spending by factories on imported parts. That number is at a record high. Given the abundance of facts about manufacturing’s strong position the US economy, why would anyone argue that it is even struggling, much less in decline? Reshoring Gains Traction in U.S. Manufacturing According to the Reshoring Initiative, an organization that helps manufacturers decide if they can successfully relocate their overseas operations to the U.S., reshoring and FDI (foreign direct investment) job announcements soared in 2017. For the first three quarters of 2017, announcements were up 250 percent from 2016 YTD, representing a gain of nearly 180,000 manufacturing jobs. Over the last 10 years, leaders in the U.S. FDI/reshoring movement include GM` (12,000 jobs), Boeing (7,800 jobs), Toyota (6,000), Mahindra (6,000), Volkswagen (4,000), and Volvo (4,000). In addition, Ford, 02/16/10 Foxconn, Mercedes-Benz, GE, Caterpillar, Polaris, and Intel have each brought back more than 2,000 jobs.

Moser, founder and president of the Reshoring Initiative, “regaining a ‘Made in America’ label is the fourth-most frequently mentioned reason for reshoring, out of the 43 reasons that we track.” Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) The key to successful reshoring is truly understanding, at a deep level, the total cost of ownership (TCO) of your product — the complete cost of every step of making that product overseas and shipping it to the United States. Obvious factors are labor costs, materials, quality and rework, waste, and logistics and shipping. However, “most companies make sourcing decisions based solely on price, often resulting in a 20 to 30 percent miscalculation of actual offshoring costs,” states Moser. Other factors — overhead, balance sheet, risks, corporate strategy, and other external and internal business components — must also be considered to determine the true total cost of ownership. The Reshoring Initiative has made it easier for companies to accurately determine TCO with a free online TCO estimator that helps determine these cost factors, allowing company leaders to make informed decisions regarding sourcing and reshoring, or winning bids against offshore competitors. The Tax Advantage The U.S. corporate tax climate is more favorable now than it has been in decades, thanks to the Trump administration’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which cuts the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent, the lowest rate since 1939. The legislation also eliminates the corporate alternative minimum tax (AMT), which prohibited companies from deducting research and development costs, or capital investments in low-income neighborhoods. Airbus Eyes Ever Higher Production Rates Airbus is studying a further increase in production of single-aisle aircraft as the

Airbus is currently on its way to increase single-aisle output to 60 aircraft, a target it wants to reach by the middle of 2019. Last year, Airbus put out 558 single-aisle aircraft, which translates into an average monthly rate 46, although that has been accelerating in the second half of the year.

The new Airbus sales chief believes that big orders for the A350-1000, its latest widebody, are near. “I have always been convinced that the A350-1000 will be a great success,” he said. “The market is likely moving to a decision point in massive campaigns from large customers,” Schulz predicted. Airbus will deliver the first -1000 to Qatar Airways “in the coming weeks”. It has taken one of its flight test aircraft on a three-week tour through the Asia-Pacific region, and is now on display at the Singapore Airshow.

The company has been debating the move beyond 60 for some time. Schulz’ predecessor John Leahy, who retired at the end of January, has been pushing the manufacturer to raise output further, but Airbus Commercial Aircraft President Fabrice Bregier has chosen to take a more cautious approach.

He argued that the aviation boom in India “will translate into widebodies at some point.” Airlines in the country have primarily ordered narrowbodies. Also, Schulz said that the “next big boom in the region could be long-haul low-cost airlines.”

As recently as May 2016 Airbus stated that it did not consider any move beyond rate 60. “There is no real serious work going into anything beyond that,” Chief Operating Officer Tom Williams said at the time.The change of mind comes after a surprisingly strong 2017 in which Airbus booked 1,055 net orders for its single-aisle products.

Schulz argued that the recent Emirates order for up to 36 more A380s enables Airbus to keep the production line running at an “industrially viable” rate of six aircraft per year. However, “a couple of customers” are still interested in placing orders for the type for use in specific markets. Airbus is also “looking at a few improvements.” Emirates’ latest order is for the current version of the aircraft and not the A380plus.

Airbus is benefiting especially from the ongoing boom in Asia’s air transport industry. It delivered 367 aircraft or 51% of its 2017 production to customers in Asia, Schulz said. The company expects airlines in the region to take delivery of around 10,000 narrowbodies in the next 20 years, in addition to 4,000 twin-engine widebodies and 650 very large aircraft. According to Schulz, Airbus has 65% of the single-aisle backlog in Asia and 60% of outstanding widebody deliveries. Schulz dismissed concerns about constraints in its supply chain. “The industry has changed dramatically,” he said. “The supply chain will continue to be able to cope so that we will be able to raise rates as needed.”

Schulz said it is unlikely that Airbus would have a good use for a new engine proposed for Boeing’s new mid-market airplane (NMA) that could reach close to 50,000 lb of thrust. “Potentially, maybe, but I don’t have personal visibility of the need for it at Airbus.” The manufacturer is considering a further stretch of the A321neo to counter the NMA should that aircraft be launched. Depending on how extensive the modifications to the aircraft will be, a more powerful engine could be needed. On their flight into Arizona, Don’s friend picked the Martins up at the airport in Phoenix and brought them to his home in Tucson. Don and Charlotte went to check out Flagstaff. “We didn’t like it but we loved Tucson”, Don says. That was nearly 4 decades ago. The Martin’s studio was immediately successful.The 2 secured contracts to teach at 5 different locations inTucson.After 4 months, though, Don analyzed the financials (and the opportunity) and determined the Martin family couldn’t live on the proceeds of the taekwondo business. Don had to get a job, and armed with his credentials of Journeyman, he easily found work. It turns out that Don didn’t dislike manufacturing or precision machining, he just didn’t thrive in a negative environment that discouraged productivity. Work in Tucson was the opposite of what he had experienced in Houston, and Don again found a passion in his trade. Don’s first assignment was as a temporary machinist working for IBM.The contract lasted 6 months, but when it was over, IBM helped Don find employment with one of their suppliers. During the next few years, Don moved up to General Manager for the shop he was working for. If taekwondo lets you know that Don had a dream of owning his own business, it should come as no surprise after a few years of working for others in Tucson, he would endeavor to open his own business. It was on April 1st, 1987 (April Fool’s Day) that he formed a partnership with 3 machinists in the industry, and the 4 each contributed $20,000 to launch Competitive Engineering Inc. (CEI). Negotiators Optimistic for NAFTA Deal, US and Mexico Say Amid the ongoing North American FreeTrade agreement renegotiations, dealmakers in Mexico and the United States are tentatively optimistic about finding a resolution. U.S.Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Mexico Foreign Minister LuisVidegaray both said in mid-February that it was important to their governments to renegotiate the deal. NAFTA was established in 1994 to smooth out trade between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.The renegotiation has been ongoing since President DonaldTrump suggested last year the U.S. might withdraw. In April 2017, Trump told the Associated Press, “I am very upset with NAFTA. Rolls Unveils IntelligentEngine Digital Strategy

Rolls expects the IntelligentEngine initiative to play a greater role in designing more integrated airframeengine combinations as the industry moves towards turbo-electric and hybrid propulsion systems in the future. While elements of the digital strategy, dubbed the IntelligentEngine, have been emerging for several years as engines have become smarter and services more data-driven, Rolls-Royce says leaps in processing power, data analytics, connectivity and cloud computing have enabled a step change in the way digital technology can impact the entire engine enterprise. The IntelligentEngine initiative builds on recently established links between RollsRoyce and tech companies like Microsoft and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) that Goodhead says gives the manufacturer the ability to “supercharge the overlap of products and services.” Rolls and Microsoft agreed in 2016 to integrate advanced analytics into the engine maker’sTotalCare services system based on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform. In December Rolls also launched the R2 Data Labs organization aimed at using advanced data analytics, industrial Artificial Intelligence and machinelearning techniques to develop new design, manufacturing and operational efficiencies. Based around a series of Data Innovation Cells housing teams of data experts, the Labs are designed to promote data innovation and build on a digital platform developed in partnership with TCS. Complimentary to the Microsoft system, Rolls says the Tata platform enables data to be captured, shared and analyzed more easily across the entire company. “We are moving towards a world where engines will be connected (to RollsRoyce and the airline infrastructure), and are contextually aware,” says Goodhead. “In the past, we’d have known what was happening inside the engine, but with the

The U.S. Navy awarded General Dynamics Mission Systems a five year, $208 million indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract for the continued procurement, testing and delivery of the AN/USC-61(C) Digital Modular Radio (DMR). DMR provides multiple communication waveforms and multi-level information security for secure tactical voice and data transmissions aboard U.S. Navy ships and submarines. The four-channel DMR is the first software-defined radio to become a communications standard for the U.S. Navy. The latest DMR improvement increases transmission rates while reducing static and other audio noise for crisp, clear voice communications.The Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) waveform was added to DMR in 2012 to significantly enhance the Navy’s beyond line-of-site, or satellite voice and data communications by connecting to the MUOS satellite communications network. The radios are also equipped with General Dynamics’ Advanced Infosec Machine (AIM) encryption chip, certified by NSA to handle classified information at the Type 1 – Top Secret level and below. The radios also communicate simultaneously at multiple levels of security, on each of the radios four channels.

CFM Reports Record Orders In 2017;Targets 2018 Delivery Catch-Up With almost 14,300 LEAP engines on order and CFM56s continuing to be produced in larger numbers than forecast, CFM International said it aims to close a 4-5-week gap between planned and actual engine deliveries to Airbus and Boeing by the end of 2018. The General Electric-Safran joint venture produced more than 1,900 engines in 2017, beating the previous record of 1,770 set in 2016, but has fought to keep deliveries of LEAP-1A/1Bs on schedule as production ramps up to support increasing A320neo and 737 MAX assembly rates. Of the 1,900 total CFM engines produced in 2017 1,441 were CFM56s and 459 were LEAP-1A/1Bs. CFM said 95% of the needed dual-source suppliers are in place and expects 100% on board by the second quarter. The planned LEAP production rate is 1,100-1,200 for 2018, growing to 1,800 in 2019 and 2,000 in 2020.The 2018 rate represents a 2.5-fold increase over last year, or around 24 engines per week.

CFM, which competes with Pratt & Whitney on the A320neo, but is the exclusive engine supplier on the 737 MAX, confirmed it is responding to inquiries by Airbus and Boeing over further potential production rate increases. Airbus is targeting a monthly rate of 60 A320s by early 2019, while Boeing said it is studying a further increase for the 737 beyond the 57 per month it plans to reach in 2019. CFM also is tackling an operational issue that has been isolated to A320neos flown by Frontier Airlines. In circumstances where the engines were left to cold-soak at temperatures as low as -15C (5F) for 4 hr. or more, CFM discovered ice could form inside a PS3 pressure sensor line connecting the high-pressure compressor with the full-authority digital engine control unit. The blockage would cause an error message and subsequent engine shutdown. As all the events occurred at low speed on the ground, CFM said there is no safety issue. As a way of cutting costs and improving the efficiency of the data centers that underpin its online empire, Google designs much of the hardware inside these massive facilities, from the computer servers to the networking gear that ties these machines together. Other internet giants do much the same. In addition to its TPU chips, which sit inside its data centers, the company has designed an AI chip for its smartphones. Right now, Google’s new service is focused on a way to teach computers to recognize objects, called computer vision technology. But as time goes on, the new chips will also help businesses build a wider range of services, Stone said. Last month, the internet giant said it would allow other companies to buy access to those chips through its cloud-computing service. Google hopes to build a new business around the chips, called tensor processing units, or TPUs. Google’s move highlights several sweeping changes in the way modern technology is built and operated. Using the chips, Lyft wanted to accelerate the development of systems that allow driverless cars to, say, identify street signs or pedestrians. “Training” these systems can take days, but with the new chips, the hope is that this will be reduced to hours. TPU chips have helped accelerate the development of everything from the Google Assistant, the service that recognizes voice commands on Android phones, to Google Translate, the internet app that translates one language into another. They are also reducing Google’s dependence on chipmakers like Nvidia and Intel. In a similar move, it designed its own servers and networking hardware, reducing its dependence on hardware makers like Dell, HP and Cisco. This keeps costs down, which is essential when running a large online operation, said Casey Bisson, who helps oversee a cloud computing service called Joyent, which is owned by Samsung. At times, the only way to build an efficient service is to build your own hardware. “This is about packing as much computing power as possible within a small area, within a heat budget, within a power budget,” Bisson said.

A new wave of artificial intelligence, including services like Google Assistant, are driven by “neural networks,” which are complex algorithms that can learn tasks on their own by analyzing vast amounts of data. By analyzing a database of old customer support phone calls, for example, a neural network can learn to recognize commands spoken into a smartphone. But this requires serious computing power. Typically, engineers train these algorithms using graphics processing units, or GPUs, which are chips that were originally designed for rendering images for games and other graphics-heavy software. Most of these chips are supplied by Nvidia. In designing its own AI chips, Google was looking to exceed what was possible with these graphicsoriented chips, speed up its own AI work and lure more businesses onto its cloud services. At the same time, Google has gained some independence from Nvidia and an ability to negotiate lower prices with its chip suppliers. “Google has become so big, it makes sense to invest in chips,” said Fred Weber, who spent a decade as the chief technology officer at the chipmaker AMD. “That gives them leverage.They can cut out the middleman.” This does not mean that Google will stop buying chips from Nvidia and other chipmakers. But it is altering

According to the Federal Reserve, following its fall of 0.1% in the previous month, industrial output rose to 0.9% in December due to gains within the mining industry. A Reuters economist poll suggested that industrial production would expand by 0.4% in the final month of 2017. BMSC (Business Management BMSC (Business Management Systems Consulting, LLC), owned and operated by Bretta Kelly, hosted a training session at RevAZ’s headquarters in Phoenix last month. The training was attended by dozens of people from more than 25 companies, and provided a combined overview of the new AS9100D / ISO 9001:2015 Standard and Internal Process Auditing. Bretta and her long-term colleague Debbie Hart provided the training during the morning session, and in the afternoon (after a delicious and healthy lunch), Lauri Larson of RevAZ provided an overview of how manufacturing entities in Arizona can benefit from its services. Lauri explains, “RevAZ is a revolutionary partnership that combines Government agency’s NIST MEP’s national manufacturing network with Arizona Commerce Authority’s unrelenting drive to grow and strengthen Arizona’s economy.” The afternoon portion of the seminar covered Internal Process Auditing, with great interaction from all the companies attending. Prior to founding BMSC, Bretta worked for a number of years in a wide range of manufacturing industries implementing and managing Business Management Systems. Her experience ranges from process control systems for Intel Corporation, ISO systems management at Varian Tempe Electronics to implementation of Business Management Systems for more than 200 Aerospace, Electronics, and other manufacturing companies. SpaceX’s First-Ever Falcon Heavy Launch Went Almost Perfectly Elon Musk captured t h e w o r l d ’s imagination y e s t e r d ay by launching a Tesla Roadster into outer space. The first-ever demo mission of SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy went almost perfectly, with just a couple of hiccups in an otherwise spectacular display of human ingenuity and whimsy. Musk’s Hawthorne, California-based aerospace company recovered two out of three rocket boosters, and his Tesla Roadster is headed farther into space than planned. The Heavy, composed of three Falcon 9 rockets of nine Merlin engines each, lifted off at 3:45 p.m. Eastern time from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. A couple of minutes after launch, the two side cores, both of which had flown before, separated from the center core and in an aerial ballet landed almost simultaneously at Landing Zones 1 and 2 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. About three minutes after liftoff, the center core separated from the second stage and also headed back to Earth, aiming for the Of Course I Still Love You droneship in the Atlantic Ocean. However, only one of three of its return engines ignited, so the booster struck water at about 300 miles per hour approximately 300 feet from the drone ship, reported The Verge. The impact “was enough to take out two thrusters and shower the deck with shrapnel,” Musk said on a call with press after the launch. The live stream of the booster landing had cut out before the crash landing. Meanwhile, the Falcon Heavy’s payload has overshot its target orbit.

Qualcomm agrees $44 billion deal for Dutch chipmaker NXP US chipmaker Qualcomm has bowed to investor pressure and raised its bid for NXP Semiconductors, hoping a new $44bn offer to buy the Dutch company will seal the longstanding deal and bolster its own defences against a hostile takeover bid from Broadcom. Qualcomm’s board unanimously backed the increased offer “based on NXP’s recent strong financial performance, the growth in key strategic areas such as auto and internet of things and our high confidence in management’s ability to execute upon the synergy opportunities”. The company has pursued NXP as part of an effort to diversify its business. The Marriage Of Millennials And Manufacturing Amidst growing pressures from competitors mixed with constantly evolving technologies like IoT and smart factories, the manufacturing industry is changing more than ever before. A recent survey shows 94.6 percent of manufacturers think positively of their company, and believe they are headed for

growth on all fronts.

While the manufacturing industry seems to be headed for success, companies must conquer the issue of a labor to make this growth a reality. A number of factors, from the introduction of automation to policy changes and economic growth, have led to an increase in workforce demand, highlighting the need for a skilled labor in the industry. Up to 72.9 percent of manufacturing companies surveyed listed recruitment and retention of a workforce as their number one business challenge, and over 30 percent of respondents note that a shrinking labor pool correlates to lost business opportunities. The same survey produced the following results on how these companies are handling this challenge: 66.6 percent of respondents want to work the existing workforce more, 65.4 percent of respondents believe the solution lies in creating and/or expanding training programs internally, 56.5 percent of respondents want to partner with educational institutions to create certification programs, and 55.4 percent think the industry should utilize temporary staffing services. Gulfstream announced performance enhancements for the G500 and G600 in October 2017. The G500 can fly 5,200 nautical miles/9,630 kilometers at Mach 0.85 or 4,400 nm/8,149 km at Mach 0.90, while the G600 can travel 6,500 nm/12,038 km at Mach 0.85 and 5,100 nm/9,445 km at Mach 0.90. The maximum operating speed for both aircraft is Mach 0.925. Even with these performance enhancements, the G500 customer delivery schedule remains the same, with deliveries set for 2018, as originally promised. Boeing Projects Another Record Year Of Aircraft Deliveries In 2018

2017—an industry record—by delivering 810-815 aircraft in 2018. The manufacturer believes the cyclical nature of commercial aircraft ordering has been mitigated by a “more balanced” base of airline customers, both geographically and in terms of types of airline business models, Boeing chairman, president and CEO Dennis Muilenburg told analysts and reporters. There is also a greater balance between growth and replacement orders, he noted. As a result, there is now a “more consistent, stable” aircraft order stream than in the past, Muilenburg said. “Airlines continue to report robust profits, and passenger traffic in 2017 grew more than 7% [year-over-year (YOY)] through November and cargo traffic exceeded 9% growth through November,” Muilenburg said, adding that Boeing expects 5.5%-6% YOY passenger traffic growth in 2018. Boeing Commercial Airplanes booked 414 net orders in the 2017 fourth quarter, taking its backlog to over 5,800 aircraft valued at $421 billion. That equates to seven years of production.

Deliveries are expected to be led again by 737s in 2018. Boeing moved to a 737 production rate of 47 per month in 2017 and plans to raise the monthly rate to 57 in 2019. Production slots for the 737 are sold out into the early 2020s, Muilenburg said. Boeing delivered the first 74 737 MAX 8s in 2017, including 44 in the fourth quarter. The MAX program backlog stands at more than 4,200 aircraft. Muilenburg said over 40% of 737s produced in 2018 will be MAXs. Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ (BCA) 2017 revenue decreased 2% YOY to $56.7 billion, but the unit’s operating profit jumped to $5.4 billion from $2 billion in 2016. BCA’s operating margin improved 6.2 percentage points YOY to 9.6% and reached 11.5% in the 2017 fourth quarter. Boeing’s overall revenue fell 1%YOY in 2017 to $93.4 billion. In the 2014 Olympic Winter Games American freestyle skier Nick Goepper’s success made history for his sport and the country. He is part of Team USA and in 2014 won the bronze medal in Sochi for slope style. In 2017, he was 10th place in the FIS World Cup Standings for slope style. Also in the X Games in Norway, he received the silver medal in slope style. Another member ofTeam USA is freestyle skier Joss Christensen who in 2014 came home with a gold medal from the Winter Olympics in Sochi.These skiers are participating in this year’s Winter Olympics too.

Skis & Snowboards - Industrial 3D printer maker Stratasys has shown special interest in incorporating additive manufacturing into the snow sport arena. In 2014 Dominic Mannella, the senior applications engineer at the Stratasys Skunkworks division, designed 3D printed downhill skis. The manufacturing process required extensive research and development, resulting in many design iterations which were well documented. FDM was the selected 3D printing method, primarily because of its ability to work with a range of production-grade thermoplastics that are suitable for extreme outdoor environments.The design required 50 layers of Ultem 9085 resin, a material which offers resistance to temperature and moisture fluctuations as well as the mechanical strength necessary for skiing. Custom production tooling was designed in SOLIDWORKS in order to cut the P-Tex base sheet, an industry standard in ski and snowboard fabrication. These layers, along with metal bindings, were bound to the base using an epoxy, resulting in a fully laminated ski. Strength was maximized without additional weight by designing the interior of each ski with a semi-hollow triangular fill structure. Soon after, Stratasys Skunkworks’ principal engineer, Kevin Johnson, decided to create the company’s first printed snowboard. Although 3D printed snowboards require similar materials as 3D printed skis, snowboards must be designed with more flexibility.This proved challenging for Johnson, who was able to achieve a final design by independently manipulating variables using CAD software, such as length, weight, camber and stiffness. The board was made entirely from the Ultem 9085 polymer filament, which was able to be waxed before using due to its semi-porous

nature. In total, the snowboard took three days to print and bind three layers. For this year’s Winter Olympics, Stratasys helped to design a sled for the US Luge Team. Skiers can also use them to securely carry their poles while traveling to slopes to prevent them from clanking. Also available on Thingiverse are printable designs for ski pole baskets. This piece goes on the end of the ski pole which is designed to stop the ski pole from sinking into the deep snow. These components can range from aerodynamic cones for racing to large snowflake shaped baskets commonly used in powdery skiing. Poles are designed to be aerodynamic on the slopes, so the basket must be designed with openings to reduce the swing rate of the pole when in use while maintaining balance. Ski Boots - In an effort to grow the sport, designer and engineer Franz Egger used additive manufacturing to develop a durable and lightweight ski boot called the EasyStand.The EasyStand ski boot is made entirely from Windform SP with the technology of selective laser sintering, developed by CRP Technology. In addition to being waterproof, Windform SP, a polyamide-based material reinforced with carbon fiber, is a highly ductile material with excellent mechanical resistance. The elasticity helps to absorb the mechanical stress of vibration or shock without breaking, resulting in an extremely durable ski boot. Furthermore,Windform SP can maintain its relative characteristics even at low temperatures, making it perfect for ski and snow sport applications. Paralympics - Athletes competing in the Winter Paralympics are using 3D printed gear for a completely custom and ergonomic fit. During the 2014 Paralympic Games, Nordic skier Martin Fleig competed using a 3D printed sit ski designed specifically for his anatomy by the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM and industrial and research partners working within the Snowstorm project. In order to engineer a customized sit ski that would be able to withstand the stresses expected in a biathlon competition, 3D biometric data of Fleig’s movements were captured and were then used to design the optimal seating position.The first prototype was manufactured using a polyamide 12-high performance polymer fitted with sensors to measure the amount of stress occurring during each use.Another prototype was built which encompassed a “new physical model” which Fleig used successfully at the Notschrei Nordic Center in Germany. Conclusion - Technology used in the winter sport arena has advanced greatly. With Arizona’s growth, Lydon predicts the demand for space for the e-commerce, food and beverage industries will continue.
