Editor’s Corner Spring Cleaning and Positive Change “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” -William Morris Spring is a time of rejuvenation, of rebirth and yes, springcleaning and organizing. For a manufacturing facility it’s a time for looking at what isn’t working, what isn’t being used, and for throwing out old habits that are not working for the betterment of the company. Out with the old, in with the functional, and make sure the old stays in the trashcan. In a manufacturing facility we call it a ‘5S opportunity’. These are five 5S phases. They can be translated from the Japanese as “sort”, “set in order”, “shine”, “standardize”, and “sustain”. Other translations are possible. 5S was developed in Japan and was identified as one of the techniques that enabled ‘Just in Time manufacturing’. Two major frameworks for understanding and applying 5S to business environments have arisen, one proposed by Osada, the other by Hiroyuki Hirano. Hirano provided a structure to improve programs with a series of identifiable steps, each building on its previous one. Of course continuous improvement means we make these changes and upgrades all the time. When something doesn’t work, a job traveler is incorrect, a methodology lost us money, or any business practice that doesn’t create a positive end, we must change it, and document it! Then when we receive a recurring order we can quote it correctly and make it correctly.This helps the business grow continuously stronger and more successful. Example: If a company finds out that a component was engineered correctly, tooled correctly, processed correctly, and the last deburring operation was not completed correctly, and it passed inspection, that company is as strong as its weakest link, deburr, and inspection. Something must change quickly. Finding out what doesn’t work well for the business model, and changing the business processes, fixing a problem, and maintaining the new practice will strengthen the weakest link or links and as a whole the business will maintain a stronger posture. This must be enforced and supported by upper management. At first blush it appears deburr missed the mark. But after reviewing the whole process what comes to light is deburr and quality with limited time and limited resources rushed through to meet the delivery and some parts were missed in the process. It’s very important to map the absolute amount of time every department needs to do a great job! Proper prior planning is worth every minute we spend on it! Announcements & Releases Hexagon Releases PC-DMIS 2019 R1 Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division today launched PC-DMIS 2019 R1, the latest edition of the world’s most popular measurement software. This is the first of two major releases scheduled for 2019, with continued service pack updates to ensure maximum reliability of the platform. PC-DMIS 2019 R1 introduces the new GD&T Selection and Capture tool which saves the user time, effort and will reduce input errors by automatically transferring GD&T data from 2D ‘blueprints’ into the PC-DMIS measurement routine. This is achieved using optical character recognition (OCR) technology and is an industry-leading innovation within metrology software. The new PC-DMIS Protect module is ideal for customers with stringent process controls and auditing standards as Protect enables users to control access to measurement routines and track modifications to them (available as a paid option). Only users with permission can amend protected routines and the business can track and audit any changes. There was once a time when requirements about training and training records seemed to take up a large portion of the early ISO 9001 standards. In the ISO 9001:2008 Standard there was a shift of focus away from training and towards competency. In the most recent standard, ISO 9001:2015, the word training does not appear in the standard; only competency and awareness can be found. In the past there was a considerable amount of confusion between training an employee and evaluating whether or not he or she was competent. Simply having records that show completion of training does not prove the employee received proper training. If an individual is not able to meet the objectives of the process, then the training is deemed ineffective.The most important part of the training is measuring the effectiveness of the training based on the employee’s performance according to the objectives and expectations of the process.

Employees who require little to no training do exist. On the other hand, some employees may struggle to meet the objectives lined out in the process. In the case of evaluating competency, the most effective form of training can be identified.While some require hands on training, others are more familiar with test taking, whereas some may prefer to practice using the tools the company uses. As companies get better at defining the expectations, their evaluation of employees will get better as well; while this entire process goes on, a company can also measure the effectiveness of its training programs. Big Kaiser Presents 3rd Annual Donation to NRL

During the annual meeting of the National Tooling and Machining Association, Chris Kaiser, president and CEO of Big Kaiser, presented a donation for $6,675 to benefit the NTMA’s National Robotics League (NRL).The donation was the result of a year-end promotion by metalcutting tooling systems and solutions manufacturer Big Kaiser, giving back to the association a percentage of every order by an NTMA or AMT member company. Manufacturers placed orders for cutting tools, tool holders, workholding and tool measurement systems, earning funds for the NRL at the same time.
What do employees need to be aware of for ISO 9001:2015 Standard? There is a section of the ISO 9001:2015 Standard that outlines what employees need to be aware of. Previous requirements included the policy; many companies post the quality policy and employees are expected to memorize it, some companies even had it posted on the back of their employees’ badges! The intent of having an entire section of the standard dedicated to employee awareness is so that companies don’t have their employees just memorize the quality policy like in the past. Now, employees are expected to understand what the policy and objectives are. For aerospace companies, employees need to be aware of all changes to documents, product safety, and the importance of ethical behavior. It has been found that the best way to train and prepare employees for how to answer questions about employee awareness during an audit is to conduct a training and go through examples for each item under section 7.3 of the standard that they need to be aware of, one by one. It is also best to let them keep documents to reference.

One of the largest conundrums involves shipping electricity efficiently and with minimal impact over long distances — from, say, empty prairie into the heart of densely populated cities . A leading solution involves a combination of high- and medium-voltage direct current transmission lines, which are more efficient over long distances than alternating current lines and can handle more power. In fact, many planners believe that to accommodate growing demand for electrical power, much of it from renewables, the main and secondary trunk lines of the current AC electrical grid should be converted to DC. But that conversion would require new designs for grid components, such as circuit breakers, that can handle DC power. To start building that future, the Energy Department’s ARPA-E recently awarded a team of engineers at GE Research $5.8 million to develop a superfast mediumvoltage DC (MVDC) circuit breaker.The GE engineers plan to use gas-plasma technology to build a superfast switch.

Existing DC breaker prototypes, developed for high-voltage point-to-point transmission lines, are generally too big, expensive and slow for use on an MVDC distribution grid. A typical HVDC breaker might measure 10 by 10 by 25 feet, need an air-conditioned building and cost between $5 million and $10 million, saysTimothy Sommerer, the principal investigator on the ARPA-E grant. One reason they’re so bulky is that they are hybrid devices:A temporary breaker made of semiconductor switches shuts down the current in a few milliseconds, which gives a main mechanical breaker time to open. Such a configuration would be too expensive to deploy for an MVDC grid. The big challenge in designing a MVDC breaker is managing the constant flow of current, unlike AC, which alternates between plus and minus along a sine wave. “The reason DC is so difficult is because there’s never a zero-
voltage crossing in the current,” Sommerer says. “In AC, you can pull the contacts apart.You may get an arc, but within half a cycle the current goes to zero, the arc extinguishes and you’re done.With DC, if you get an arc, it never stops.” Among the advantages of plasma switches is their smaller size. Semiconductors switches can also operate quickly, but they must be spaced apart to stay cool. As a result, the equipment can grow quite large. Since plasma switches can operate at much higher temperatures, they can work closer together and fit inside a smaller footprint As part of the program, GE will build a demonstration breaker that operates at 100 amperes — about one-tenth what a gridready breaker would need to handle. “If we are really going to decarbonize the economy, then we have to electrify not only transportation, but also eliminate fuel oil and natural gas for heating buildings, so the loads on the grid could really increase over time. by Fred Guterl
Training Future Workers at Summer Manufacturing Camps The foundation of the Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies (PMMI) is partnering with the foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, Int’l. to support twenty camps in 2020 and 2010. The industry is hoping that exposure to the industry will “inspire the future manufacturing workforce to explore career opportunities in packaging and processing.” PMMI’s foundation is proving a $100,000 grant to Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs (NBT) to produce the camps.This summer, NBT will support a record number of 133 camps across the U.S. “One of the most wide-spread challenges cited by our members is how to address the growing skills gap within the packaging and processing equipment manufacturing industry,” says Jim Pittas, CEO, PMMI. The grant will support 300 students, ages 12 to 16, to be introduced to the manufacturing process from design through production. One or two-week long summer camps have been a successful way of introducing middle and high school students to the high-tech career choices available in today’s advanced manufacturing industry. Camps allow students to make something with their own hands, sparking their imagination and encouraging them to consider a career in manufacturing. This summer, NBT will support a record number of 133 camps across the U.S.
To be eligible for camp grant funding, schools must be able to accommodate at least 12 students at their facility, direct an entrepreneurship camp curriculum, introduce manufacturing processes that allow hands-on experiences to build a take-home project, and provide opportunities to tour local manufacturing plants during the camp. “For most of the kids who attend these camps, it is their first introduction to how things are made and what skills are required for entry into the world of manufacturing,” said Edward Youdell, president and CEO of FMA and NBT. “The associated tours of manufacturing businesses that these campers take part in, help to connect the skills they learn during camp to career opportunities available in their community.We can’t start too early in our effort to attract the best and brightest into manufacturing.” Since 1998, PMMI has provided over $2 million in financial support to students at over 40 partner schools throughout the U.S and Canada. U.S. Employment Report Points To Growing Economy, Tame Inflation U.S. employment g r o w t h accelerated from a 17-month low in March, assuaging fears of an abrupt s l ow d ow n i n economic activity, but a moderation in wage gains supported the Federal Reserve’s decision to suspend further interest rate increases this year. Milder weather boosted hiring in sectors like construction, but worsening worker shortages and lingering effects of tighter financial market conditions at the turn of the year left job growth below 2018’s brisk pace. The Labor Department’s closely watched employment report on Friday also showed a small upward revision to February’s meager job gains.

U.S. stocks. The dollar rose marginally against a basket of currencies, while U.S. Treasury prices were mixed. The employment report added to fairly upbeat construction spending and factory data that led Wall Street banks to boost their growth estimates for the first quarter. Growth forecasts for the first quarter are between a 1.4 percent and 2.1 percent annualized rate.The economy grew at a 2.2 percent rate in the fourth quarter, stepping down from the July-September quarter’s brisk 3.4 percent pace. Average hourly earnings increased by 0.1 percent in March after jumping 0.4 percent in February. That lowered the annual increase in wages to 3.2 percent from 3.4 percent in February, which was the biggest gain since April 2009. The length of the average workweek rose to 34.5 hours from 34.4 hours in February. As a result of the rebound in employment, modest wage gains and more hours worked, the aggregate weekly payrolls index, a proxy for take-home wages, increased 0.5 percent last month, which bodes well for consumer spending after it stalled in January.
“This was a Goldilocks report, with a rebound in job growth to calm fears of an imminent recession, and wage growth that was solid enough without triggering inflationary concerns,” said Curt Long, chief economist at the National Association of Federally-Insured Credit Unions. “The Fed will be pleased, as it supports their present stance of holding firm on rates.”
The unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.8 percent in March, close to the 3.7 percent that Fed officials project it will be by the end of the year. Though monthly job gains have moderated to an average of 180,000 this year from 223,000 in 2018, they remain above the roughly 100,000 per month needed to keep up with growth in the working-age population.
The U.S. central bank last month halted its three-year campaign to tighten monetary policy, dropping projections for any rate hikes this year after lifting borrowing costs four times in 2018. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 196,000 jobs in March. Data for February was revised modestly up to show 33,000 jobs created instead of the previously reported 20,000. February job gains were the smallest since September 2017.
Economists expect job growth to average about 150,000 per month this year. There are about 7.58 million open jobs in the economy. Vacancies could remain elevated as 224,000 people dropped out of the labor force last month.

From Prison To The Factory: Hundreds Of Former Inmates Make Boeing Parts In a factory perched on a hill above the DuwamishWaterway in South Seattle, Mark Behrends is building a business with workers who have spent more time behind bars than inside a manufacturing facility. Behrends is a vice president at Pioneer Enterprises, where he and a team from Pioneer Human Services train and mentor hundreds of former prison inmates to become metal workers and even top aerospace machinists at a time when skilled talent is scarce. Gregory Burgess started at Pioneer in 2010 after decades in jail.
He built life skills, became a machinist apprentice, and now is a production supervisor. Pioneer also paid for him, at age 49, to get a college degree. “When I interview people, I don’t ask them where they’ve been,” Burgess said. “I ask them where they want to go. My own experience gives me unique insight into their ability to reintegrate.” Nikki Lohman, an aerospace program manager, credits Pioneer with providing training, mentoring and education that positively shaped her new life. Pioneer Enterprises is the business arm of the nonprofit Pioneer Human Services. Its profits are reinvested in the nonprofit’s community efforts efforts and people like Burgess and Lohman.Its 60,000-square-foot factory operates like any other aerospace supplier and metal fabrication machine shop, bidding on contracts to win. “People like what we do with social reentry programs, job training, life counseling, but if we’re not cost, quality and delivery competitive, you’re not going to get the work,” Behrends said. Pioneer has a five-year contract with Boeing to produce hardware that secures 777X stow bins, and for cargo liners in the jet’s belly. That work accounts for about 10 percent of Pioneer’s $33 million annual revenue. Pioneer’s Roadmap to Success training program produces more talent than it needs. “2018 was a transformational year that laid the foundation for Arcimoto’s business moving forward,” CEO Mark Frohnmayer, who founded Arcimoto in 2007, said. That’s taken considerable time and money. Last June, Arcimoto talked about being in a position to produce 200 vehicles a week by the end of 2019. In a presentation released Monday, it pushed that target out to 12 months from the start of Evergreen production, and listed delivering 400-plus Evergreens in 2019 as a key goal. For 2020, Arcimoto is now targeting production of 5,000 vehicles, generating revenue around $100 million. Arcimoto, After Spending $11M In 2018, Builds Customer Queue Arcimoto Inc. showed signs of generating revenue in the first quarter of 2019 after plowing around $11 million last year into gearing up production at its Eugene electric vehicle plant. The company released its first full-year annual report as a publicly traded company last month. Arcimoto said it quickly filled a queue of 100 reservations — each coming with a $5,000 nonrefundable deposit — for its initial retail model, the $19,900 FUV Evergreen Edition that was unveiled in early February for customers in West Coast states. Zunum Aero Is A BoeingBacked Startup Building A Hybrid Electric Regional Airplane Zunum Aero, the hybrid electric airplane startup backed by Boeing and JetBlue Airways, is aiming to have one of its planes enter commercial service in 2020. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but Magnix CEO Roei Ganzarski said motors are being built “as we speak” in the company’s Australian engineering and manufacturing factory. Next, they will be tested on a stationary airframe. Ganzarski said the engines will be flight
tested on a Harbour seaplane in late 2019. “It’s one thing to take a motor and have a small motor with all this power in it, but it’s another to put it on a iron bird and and turn propellers powered by batteries, and then to put it actually on an airplane and fly it,” Ganzarski said. “Not only will it be flying our motors, but we’re doing so with an operator that understands the value that electric propulsion can bring to their operation.” Harbour Air competes with Kenmore Air, which operates a seaplane service to Vancouver and other British Columbia cities from Kenmore and Seattle’s Lake Union. How A Dutch Company’s Technology Is Likely Driving Intel’s Expansion
The technology is so important Intel and its rivals invested heavily in ASML seven years ago. Intel, Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. agreed to purchase 25 percent of ASML’s shares. Now that the tech is ready, all three have cut their stakes since 2017. “There was agreement in the industry and the huge opportunity of EUV and what it could bring to the industry as a whole,” said Marco Pieters, ASML vice president of product marketing for EUV. “People realized that the investment to get there couldn’t be the burden of one party only.” EUV is a different way to prep wafers during chip manufacturing. It will be used in tandem with existing deep ultraviolet technology. It’s necessary for critical layers in the process. Existing deep ultraviolet technology uses a 195-nanometer wavelength of light to pattern multiple layers of transistors and interconnects onto the wafers. In the complex process, a finished wafer goes through hundreds of printing passes. At its current 10-nanometer size, Intel has hit the limits for deep ultraviolet lithography. In order to get the resolution needed for the tiny structures required to shrink a chip to 7-nanometers, it requires EUV, which works at a shorter 13.5 nanometer wavelength, said Pieters.

While research on EUV started in 2000, the first high-volume machines didn’t ship until last year. In 2018, ASML shipped 18 machines and expects to ship 30 this year. The giant machines are the size of a city bus and take two 747 trips to deliver from Europe. It takes about 16 weeks for assembly and installation, Kuijper said. ASML’s Hillsboro group operates 24/7, with two 12-hour shifts. The majority of employees work in the customer’s fab. With EUV ready for high volume production, Intel’s 7nm products could set the company back on a Moore’s Law timeline, of creating new smaller chips roughly every two years. The delays in 10nm had brought questions about the continued relevance of Moore’s Law. Intel has indicated that its 7-nanometer products are on better track than the currently delayed 10-nanometer chips, which have faced manufacturing challenges. Last April, then-CEO Brian Krzanich told Wall Street analysts the 10nm node is the last generation developed without EUV. The various challenges and delays in 10nm have been tied to the complexity of using existing lithography.

The challenge is to find these kids and that requires enlightening parents, teachers and educators. “We need to hold our teachers accountable and insist they train our kids on a high level – the level that is needed both now and in the future.” The country also needs to reach out to many different types of populations including veterans and those on the autistic spectrum. One of his sons, who is on the spectrum, operates extremely sophisticated machines in Gilroy’s shop. “Manufacturing saved him,” says Gilroy. “He is judged on his productivity.” Setting up shops in prison is another path that Gilroy personally embraces to provide a second chance to those who have served their time and are now coming back to society. In the presentation, Gilroy showed a chart that demonstrated that as manufacturing jobs decreased incarceration increased. And violence is prevalent in our cities too, he pointed out. We make an awesome knife.” Esmond works as a beveler, a job that requires shaping knife blades eight hours a day. Her enthusiasm for Benchmade isn’t isolated. Business is booming at the Oregon City-based company. Experts said there are a number of reasons for Benchmade’s success. Some say its swelling top-line reflects a surge in interest in knives because of a popular TV show. Others said Benchmade’s longterm commitment to craftsmanship and making knives in the U.S.A. is paying off. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Whatever the reason, business has never been better. The company’s employment has doubled in the past four years to 400. It’s got another 35 open jobs. “Benchmade is highly thought of in the industry and has been for quite some time,” said Steve Shackleford, editor of Blade magazine. “We look for them to be a player in the industry for a long time.” Les de Asis founded Benchmade in California in 1979. He moved the company to Clackamas County in 1990 in order to be closer to the region’s cluster of knife companies, which now includes Gerber, Kershaw and Leatherman. He also wanted a place to more comfortably raise his two young children. Soft-spoken, humble and with a reputation for ingenuity, de Asis has a personality not unlike Tim Leatherman, another Portland knife-industry pioneer. He dresses casually in jeans, a collared shirt and a fleece vest. Also like Leatherman, de Asis has prioritized innovation, durability and quality. All Benchmade knives come with a lifetime warranty and lifetime free sharpening. Benchmade has four product lines: Blue, for everyday use, Black for heavy users, such as law enforcement and the military, Gold for custom knives and Hunt, for hunters. Knives start around $140. Some cost more than $700. De Asis is credited with being among the first to make mass-produced knives in collaboration with artisan knifemakers.“They use some of the best knifemakers as designers and have for some time,” Shackleford said. “They’ve been a leader in that regard.” Product line manager Hans Albing said the company’s products are in demand with discerning law enforcement users, enthusiasts and collectors. “We’re best in class in every single category,” he said. “Most companies have been in a race to the bottom.” Benchmade doesn’t disclose sales. Blade magazine last year reported it’s had eight consecutive years of double-digit growth.

Benchmade operates out of two buildings in Oregon City. Blades are cut from raw steel with a laser. Handles are made from a variety of materials including aluminum, titanium and stabilized woods. Workers shape and polish the blades and handles and assemble knives on-site. Most work stations include micrometers and calipers used to measure the size of the blades and handles. They can take measurements as precise as 1/1000 of an inch, about 1/4 the thickness of a sheet of paper. The precision is necessary because many of the company’s knives fold. “If it were any more you’d feel it,” Albing said. Before it’s packed into a box, every knife is hand sharpened. Factory workers also test each knife by slicing pieces of scrap paper. “A sharp edge is important to a Benchmade knife consumer,” Albing said. The entry-wage for factory workers is $15 an hour. Blade online editor Ben Sobieck said part of the success is attributable to a surge in knife-collecting because of the popularity of “Forged in Fire” a show on the History Channel. “The visibility of Benchmade has certainly increased as the knife market in general has increased,” he said. “It’s one of those rising-tides-lifts-all-boats situations.” Shackleford said Benchmade’s commitment to U.S. manufacturing should shield the company if the market ebbs. “With our readers, it makes a big difference if the knife is made in America,” he said. “They want to know the country of manufacture. They use that as a big deciding factor when they buy a knife.” In 2016, Oregon State University recognized the company with an Excellence in Family Business Award. Blade magazine inducted de Asis into its Cutlery Hall of Fame two years ago. De Asis also is an original member of the American Knife and Tool Institute. “He has been a leader in the industry for a long time,” Shackleford said. “They make some of the

3D PRINTING The Need For Speed: The Potential Of Additive Manufacturing Is Enormous, And Materializing Now by ScottWoolley
After a career spent inventing new ways to manipulate metal, William Carter sometimes imagines what it would be like to demonstrate GE’s latest technology to a blacksmith visiting from the Bronze Age. While the time-traveling metallurgist would have no trouble recognizing the wax patterns and ceramic molds used to cast turbine blades and other large metal items, Carter says, he chuckles at the idea of his visitor watching computer-guided lasers conjure elaborate objects from a bed of metal powder: “What it would look like to him is as though we are making parts from burning dirt.”

Carter, an engineer at GE Research with 45 U.S. patents and 75 technical publications, has been around since the dawn of direct metal laser melting, a particularly promising subset of the field now known as additive manufacturing, or 3D printing. His time-travel musings reflect both his humility and his optimism, given the head start his upstart technology must overcome. “Investment casting has undergone 5,000 years of development,” Carter says, referring to the days when artisans used beeswax models to cast jewelry, ornaments, weapons and tools. “Additive manufacturing is now only about 30 to 40 years old. We’ve got to catch up fast.” Today’s technology traces its earliest roots to the mid-1980s, when an undergraduate at the University ofTexas at Austin named Carl Deckard ran the first experiments attempting to use a laser to build simple structures out of a plastic powder. Deckard’s equipment was crude. Using a Commodore 64 computer, he would take early computer-aided design blueprints and use them to create a path for a laser, which would then build a small object by fusing bits of plastic together. (All additive manufacturing works this way, adding small layers of material together to create a solid object.) Deckard’s innovative
process, known as selective laser sintering, caught the eye of William Carter, then a freshly minted Ph.D. working at GE Research. Soon it would capture Carter’s imagination as well. He teamed up with Marshall Jones, a fellow GE Research engineer and laser expert bound for the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and pitched his boss on a bold idea: Why not take the concept pioneered by Deckard using plastic and instead try to make objects out of metal? Using additive manufacturing to make metal parts soon produced very high-quality prototypes, to the delight of Carter and Jones, but also revealed a fundamental problem.The laser fusing the metal powder into a solid object focused on such a fine point — typically around a tenth of a millimeter — that it took ages for the beam to create even small objects. “The process was painfully slow,” Carter says. “But I saw it as a huge opportunity.”

After writing a paper on their early experiments, Jones focused on lasers and Carter returned to other research on metals processing. Developments continued in the industry, and by the mid-2010s, many other engineers and executives had become believers in the potential of the new technology. GE responded by making a series of deals, including partnerships, acquisitions and other investments, to stay at the vanguard. Carter had never shaken the 3D-printing bug, and soon returned to the technology, using it to build a series of larger and larger parts at faster and faster speeds. One recent success came in the building of combustor liners for jet engines. Combustor liners are heavily perforated parts that control the flow of cooling air into the hottest sections of the engine. The new additive process made it possible to redesign the perforations as complex tunnels that route the air through the metal to spots engineers had trouble reaching, and opens up a new world of performance and efficiency gains.

Carter’s current project, a collaboration between GE Research and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, began in early 2015. With funding from the Air Force Research Laboratory, the project created open-source software to control 3D printers, giving researchers greater control over the metal-melting process than they could get with commercial software.

Carter is now working on the final phase of the collaboration, building a working system that aims to speed up the printing process once again. Increases in speed typically come from three sources: using more lasers, using more powerful beams to melt thicker metal layers faster, or tweaking the process to find more efficient paths for the lasers that already exist.

Unfortunately, the easiest solutions come with new problems of their own. Carter explains it this way: “If you’re watering your lawn nicely, and then you switch to a fire hose, you get a different result. That same thing happens with lasers, if you just switch to higher power.” To handle that problem, Carter has teamed up with Livermore’s Manyalibo “Ibo” Matthews, who has been using a camera running at up to 10 million frames per second to show what happens when the laser hits the “melt pool” where the metal particles fuse together.

Ryan’s House for Youth is the vision that became reality for Lori Cavender, named after her friend from childhood affectionately deemed God Brother, Ryan Busche, who lost his life along with his wife Abby on Alaska Airlines flight 261 nearly 20 years ago. Ryan Busche’s legacy as an advocate for the homeless carries on as RHFY has become a lifeline for homeless youth on Whidbey Island – serving ages spanning 12 to 24.
