Editor’s Corner Why is Manufacturing So Important ForThe United States? These past few weeks my spouse Linda Daly and I have been to a few manufacturing trade shows, in particular the Amcon Shows and the Design 2 Part shows. These shows are small in comparison to IMTS and Westec, and a few others but are well attended and very well run by the staff and managing team! These are shows small businesses can afford to market their respective businesses in and to meet other small, like businesses for growth, and new potential customers. While talking with the participants running their booths at these manufacturing shows we heard a united message of record sales, increased business, and positive future sales. “It’s a good time to be in manufacturing” many said to us. And, it’s true; we are in a time of increased prosperity, and of realization; we are all recognizing we need to promote our businesses and focus on promoting our strong country. The USA is the most powerful and economically strong country in the world,we are all a very resilient group of freedom seeking immigrants that are proud of our baseball, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball and football teams (and more) and very proud of our red white and blue flag too that represents freedom and achieved prosperity. Jobs are plentiful and the over all feeling reported was successful and progressive! The thing that encouraged me the most is a lot of these companies had never purchased a booth at a trade show before and they were making a concerted effort to market their businesses by being at these shows; long hours, a lot of standing, talking/sharing, and selling their business attributes to prospective new customers. In between the comments of sore feet and a lack of sleep were the schedules of continued shows they were going to attend to bolster their individual businesses by pressing forward and pioneering their future success by showing up and working these viable manufacturing shows. These manufacturing shows are a must for all young and seasoned companies that work hard to promote their businesses in a era of continued progress and new ventures of their manufacturing businesses. If you are new you need to market or promote your business, and if you have been in business for many years you need your pipeline to be continually filled with new prospects or continued new prospective customers. We all must get out there and let the world know were are here and viable! While we would could credit one individual or a group of individuals for our economic fortune, we all know we are the citizens of the USA and WE make the difference. Paul Ryan said, “Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together”. U.S. manufacturing is the largest in the world. It produces 18.2 percent of the world’s goods. That’s more than the entire economic output of Canada, Korea, or Mexico. But America’s leadership position is threatened by high operating costs; small business bolsters this strong hold. This gives us the onus of getting out there to do what we must, to promote our individual businesses and to network with other businesses, and to forward thinking individuals. We talk, we share what we do, and how we can help manufacturing! Manufacturing adds a lot of value to the power of the U.S. economy. Every dollar spent in manufacturing adds $1.89 in business growth in other supporting sectors, according to the National Association of Manufacturers. In closing, I recommend you work hard to build your businesses by showing up, getting out there, and helping promote U.S. manufacturing! If you have a story, we want to print it. Until next issue, GOD bless our troops, and GOD bless U.S. Manufacturing!

Major Cast Iron Maker Acquires Portland Startup

TVT DIE CASTING Precision aluminum and zinc die casting, machining and finishing. Quality, Reliability and Service

In the cast iron equivalent of an AB InBev snapping up a local Portland craft brewer, Lodge Manufacturing Company has acquired Portland’s FINEX Cast Iron Cookware. We are a full service job shop, providing as much or as little project involvement as required – from tool and die design to finishing and assembly.

tvtdiecast.com

Founded in 2012 by Mike Whitehead and Ron Khormaei through two wildly successful Kickstarter campaigns, FINEX today makes cast iron skillets, grill pans, Dutch ovens and other cookware here in Portland. The company landed a $60,000 investment from the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network back in 2014.

800 280 2278

Lodge is the largest cast iron cookware manufacturer in the county. It was founded in 1896 in South Pittsburg, Tenn., where it still has two large foundries.

ISO 9001:2008 Certified

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. According to a release, the acquisition adds a “celebrated modern luxury brand” to Lodge’s lineup. This is Lodge’s first acquisition of an established cast iron company in its 123-year history.

GMA GARNET GROUP when your abrasive matters!

The deal will also give FINEX more resources for research and design of new products as well as access to a much larger customer base. FINEX will continue to operate out of Portland, with employees becoming part of the Lodge team. The FINEX brand will continue to stand on its own. FINEX’s Portland operations are at 2236 N.W. 21st Ave.

Lodge President and CEO Mike Otterman said the balance of this year will be spent managing the transition of FINEX iron production from FINEX’s current partners to Lodge’s foundries in Tennessee. However, FINEX will maintain its manufacturing operations, including drilling, machining and assembly, here in Portland.

“This merging of like-minded American cast iron companies is an exciting opportunity for the future of USA-made cast iron cookware,” Otterman said. “Lodge values made-in-America manufacturing and wants to continue to be the leader in cast iron cookware. We feel this is a very good cultural fit for our business and view FINEX as a longterm asset for our company.” By Jon Bell – Staff Reporter, Portland Business Journal

OCT - NOV ‘19

Taking advantage of new manufacturing technologies, microfactories are small, highly automated factories. In addition to requiring less space, the microfactory doesn’t need as large of a labor force and can use less energy and materials. The microfactory business model is founded on digital technologies. Automation, augmented reality software, laser cutting, online workflows, and other new innovations make it possible for manufacturers to change the way they work. With faster processing, digital printing, and computerized cutting and dispatching, the microfactory is more agile. With the ability to turnaround products more quickly to meet demand, manufacturers are only producing products after they are sold. These factories can have a smaller footprint as they are focused on in-demand manufacturing instead of mass production, which lets the factory minimize stock and reduce exposure to risks such as: Speed to market Value of the product stock Consumer relevance Cost of unsold inventory Benefits of the Microfactory Movement The microfactory does “high-mix, lowvolume business with low cost and high ROI,” Ben Schrauwen, chief technology officer for Oqton, a manufacturing AI firm, wrote in IndustryWeek. These innovative factories offer several advantages, such as: Greater opportunity for innovation Lower labor costs due to AI and automation Increased engagement and a morale boost for highly skilled engineers working in an agile environment Improved flow of digital information across multiple locations Enhanced ability to tailor products at low cost on a moment-to-moment basis Requiring less square footage, these

microfactories are bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. No longer seeking out lower labor costs abroad, production opportunities being reshored, which reduces emissions ties to supply and product transport, while the factories themselves have a curtailed environmental impact. Microfactories are not only using less energy but can also contribute to recycling efforts and reclamation of resources. Veena Sahajwalla, the director of the Centre for Sustainable Materials Research & Technology at the University of New South Wales, wants to see communities moving to microfactories which use tiny furnaces at selective temperatures to extract valuable resources from e-waste such as hard-drives, CDs, and phone batteries. The microfactory trend is gaining traction in the fashion and textile industry in particular but is also being utilized in other areas as well, including: GE, for example, is using microfactories in its appliance division. The “First Build” factories will help the company to test products before they are moved to larger-scale production. Divergent 3D in 2017 raised over $65 million for an automated microfactory in California. With microfactories making production possible for small businesses and even individuals, these little factories could have a big impact on manufacturing for the future. What is a Microfactory? Microfactories were first proposed by the Mechanical Engineer Laboratory (MEL) of Japan in 1990. Microfactories aren’t dissimilar to job shops or contract manufacturers, but they tend to focus more on smaller spaces, a wider range of process capabilities, and startup customers. Job shops often specialize in a few of the processes required for fabrication,

whereas a microfactory is an end-to-end solution for an entire product. A job shop dedicated to metal cutting may offer metal bending, fabrication, and laser cutting services, while microfactories tend to offer a wider variety of services, such as welding, circuit design, 3D printing, and beyond. Microfactories allow companies to reduce the supply chain and quickly iterate on products even after they’re released, enabling on-demand production and, in many cases, a hyper-local focus. These spaces don’t replace traditional factories: instead, they fill a new need for small run, localized production, where one small factory may serve a single geographic locale. For example, General Electric’s Fuse microfactory in Chicago aims to inspire collaboration and facilitate small-batch manufacturing of products from their community. These spaces typically earn revenue by offering services to other companies, producing parts for startup customers, manufacturing their own product lines, or adding value for existing clients (for example, a design company may add fabrication to their list of services). According to industry publications, Intel is cutting prices of its latest i9 chips by $1,000, with the upcoming products pricing at $979. The i9 chips, slated to become available next month, are built on the company’s 14-nanometer technology. In recent quarters the company has logged strong performance of its PC business due largely to the sales of its high-end, and premium-priced, chips. Intel has squeezed more performance out of the 14nm chips with a series of upgrades while the company works to get back on track with the regular cadence of shrinking chip size. The previous timeline in which smaller sizes were released every two years has been severely delayed between the 14nm and 10nm products. The 10nm chips, named Ice Lake, have started shipping in premium laptops. As Intel deals with manufacturing delays surrounding 10nm, rival chipmaker AMD has released its equivalent technology, manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. AMD is set to release a new version of its product, the Ryzen Threadripper, next month as well. Those chips are expected to be cheaper than Intel’s but still provide the computing needed for certain uses, according to reports. Just last month, an Intel executive noted that the manufacturing delays, which led to some 14nm chip shortages, did lead to some loss of market share. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

“As we’ve gone through the supply issue kind of in the last six to 12 months on the PC side, we had to walk away from some low-end mobile share as well as some channel desktop share,” said Vice President Jason Grebe at the September Citi 2019 Global Technology Conference. “But as we continue to improve our supply situation, we’ll continue to get more aggressive there.” The company announced that longtime corporate treasurer Ravi Jacob is retiring after 35 years at Intel. Jacob is being replaced by Sharon Heck, who is being promoted to corporate vice president, treasurer and chief tax officer, the company said. Heck is a relative newcomer to the company. She joined Intel in 2018 from accounting firm PwC. By Malia Spencer – Staff Reporter, Portland Business Journal

In June, Kratos said it was looking to hire 60 more employees to add to its local workforce of 440. In an interview last month, Fendley said the company has hired only 20 of those 60 positions, and the new contract might call for an additional five more manufacturing staff. Hiring has been very tight he said. The military uses Kratos aircraft for target practice and training for its advanced weapons systems. With the exception of the jet engine, all the major components of the unmanned systems division’s drones are built, assembled, painted, tested and shipped in Sacramento. Some of Kratos’ planes are destroyed in target practice, but in many cases, the targets can be reused. On average, the targets fly about five times. Some make it up to 10 flights because the weapons that soldiers shoot at them have recording and transmitting equipment on them instead of kinetic warheads. The Kratos jet planes have parachutes for landing, which is cheaper and safer than landing on a runway. Two Heavy-Duty Electric Freightliners Ready To Roll Out Of Portland Daimler Trucks North America LLC said that the first of its Class 8 batter y electr ic Freightliner eCascadias will go to Penske Truck Leasing and NFI operations in Southern California, where Penske is already testing medium-duty electric Freightliners. Daimler introduced the eCascadia, intended for local and regional use, and the short-haul eM2 last year. Series production of both models is expected to begin in late 2021. Other original equipment manufacturers, including Tesla and Volvo, are developing electric big rigs as well. The climate crisis and pollution concerns are compelling the move to electric trucking, but it could take several years before there’s real market penetration in the U.S. Not only does the technology have to prove itself out, but charging infrastructure presents another development challenge. Machine Tool Supplier Renews Scholarship Program CNC Machines LLC has launched its second annual scholarship program for students pursuing certification, a certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree in a manufacturing-related area of study. The Floridabased online market for used CNC milling machines, CNC lathes, and other CNC machines, seeks to address the manufacturing industry’s shortage of skilled workers able to program and operate machine tools and to manage manufacturing operations. The “skills gap” has been a pressing concern for manufacturers over the past decade, and despite growth in the sector creating thousands of new jobs since 2017, a 2018 Deloitte report found that over 500,000 manufacturing jobs remain unfilled. The lack of available job candidates could be the cause of considerable decline in U.S. GDP in the coming decade, according to the same research. CNC Machines also has awarded scholarships exclusively to veterans seeking training and education to become machinists. The CNC Machines Manufacturing Scholarship program awarded $2,000 to its first winner earlier this year, and the award value has been increased to $2,500 in the current round.

That’s based on how far a vehicle can travel on 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity, the energy equivalent of a gallon of gas. Although technically classified as a motorcycle, the FUV seats two and has room for cargo, allowing it to essentially function as a car.“I believe that it will be the most efficient vehicle in the market suitable for the wide range of everyday driving trips,” Frohnmayer said.

Mark Frohnmayer, who founded the electric vehicle company in 2007, called it “the most significant milestone in the company’s history to date,” but added that Arcimoto was “just getting to the starting line” in a mission to transform the transportation sector. The company has made several prototypes and a few dozen beta vehicles over the years, but this marks the beginning of what it calls “retail series” production at the factory it began outfitting in 2017. Frohnmayer spent nearly a decade struggling to find the revolutionary design he was looking for. It needed to be small, maneuverable and fun, but still able to travel at highway speeds. It needed to be simple to make and cheap; the goal remains to get the base price down to around $12,000. By September 2017, he’d made enough progress to take the company public, netting the enterprise more than $18 million to work with. At the time, the goal was to be producing 2,000 vehicles annually by the end of 2018. The timeline shifted out when the company decided to accelerate factory capital investments, trading early production for a more vertically integrated operation. Subsequent targets also fell by the wayside, occasionally frustrating customers and investors. More capital will be needed to grow the company, but at least revenue will soon be arriving. As Frohnmayer said, “There is a magic moment in a startup when the revenue box goes non-zero.”By Pete Danko, Portland Business Journal

Veteran-Owned Precision Manufacturing Entity Valley Precision Successfully Certifies to AS9100 Revision D/ISO9001 From Start To Finish In Less than 3 Months With The Help Of Consulting Firm BMSC Valley Precision Machine is pleased to announce that it recently certified to AS9100 Revision D/ISO 9001: 2015. Established in 1977 by Veteran and Mechanical Engineer Donald (Don) Faubion, Valley Precision is a full service manufacturing facility with more than 20,000 square feet of temperature controlled floor space. The company’s capabilities include: CNC Milling; CNC Turning; Wire EDM; Surface Grinding; Jig Grinding, Boring and complete assembly. The facility includes a Class 100 clean room and the company routinely manufactures parts with tolerances of +/- .0001. General Manager and 39-year tenured employee Dave Valert, says, “We’ve been in business for more than 4 decades and today we provide high precision quality parts to our customers in the aerospace, energy, communications and medical industries. Don and I knew that ISO and AS9100 certification would eventually be necessary to take us to the next level, but we also worried that it would burden us with paperwork that could negatively impact our turnaround time for customers.” He continued, “But in the beginning of this year, when our sales guy told us that some of the customers he was going after said that if we weren’t certified, we wouldn’t qualify to even bid on their work, we knew we had to take this next step. Intuitively, we knew it would open more doors for our business and expand our relationship with our current customers.” Don retains his Professional Engineer (PE) license as a manufacturing engineer and he had worked for large corporations, including IBM and Memorex, prior to launching his own business. Dave says, “Our Company was founded by and built by an engineer who knows and understands processes extremely well.” Interestingly, Don had torn out and saved an article in the A2Z Manufacturing magazine years ago. It was for a company called BMSC, owned by Bretta Kelly, and the company helped small manufacturers prepare for ISO and AS9100 certifications. Dave says, “Don kept this ad because he had not only seen their ad in the magazine over a period of time, but he also saw testimonials and articles about BMSC from others in the industry who had used BMSC. Don respected these companies and knew that BMSC must be a really good entity.”

“Bretta and Debbie are outstanding in their ISO and AS9100 consulting”, Dave says. The two are incredible in how each has a different skill set and style; yet they compliment each other and you get a very complete package.” He adds, “Bretta excels at the big picture and she is intense, while Debbie helped us to minimize the stress associated with achieving certification.” “One of our fears about certification was that we would bring in a consultant and they would tell us all the ways we needed to change the way we were doing business. That didn’t happen with BMSC – they helped us with documenting processes we were already doing, and in some cases, helped us to improve processes”, Dave says. “In the end, getting certified was so much easier than we expected, and we would highly recommend Bretta Kelly’s firm BMSC. They did a fabulous job.” Valley Precision sent emails to a few of their longest-term customers letting them know that had achieved certification. Dave says, “We couldn’t believe it – our loyal buyers emailed their colleagues throughout the country letting them know about us and our recent achievement. Within the week, we received requests for quotes from new buyers. It is more than we could have expected.” The team says that ISO and AS9100 certification is instilling in the Valley Precision team processes for improved documentation, employee training and continuous improvement.

“Once we made the decision to certify to both ISO 9001 and AS9100 simultaneously, Don contacted Bretta Kelly at BMSC.They did a phone interview in the spring of this year, and Don knew that he wanted BMSC as our consultant.”

To learn more about how your business can benefit from ISO and AS9100 certification, contact Business Management Systems Consulting (BMSC) at (602) 445-9400 or visit BusinessMSC. com

Bretta and her colleague Debbie Hart met face to face in a kick off meeting with the Valley Precision team in August. Dave says, “They told us immediately that helping us to get to certification would be simplified due to the extensive processes and

What Businesses Need To Know About Section 382 And Other Changes To Net Operating Loss Rules

Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017, while warranted, have only served to add to the confusion.

It often surprises people that Amazon, arguably the most valuable public company in the world, likely paid no federal taxes last year. Some of that is the result of activities that fall under favorable tax incentives, such as those designed to encourage research and development.

The first thing to note is that there’s a limit on how far back and how far forward businesses can carry NOLs. In general, prior to the TCJA, a business’s NOL could be carried back two years and carried forward 20 years to offset taxable income. However, under the TCJA, NOLs generated beginning after Dec. 31, 2017 are subject to different requirements:

But at least one of the strategies Amazon is pursuing to reduce its tax liability is available to any company that has failed to make a profit at some point.

•The two-year carryback is repealed • The NOLs will have an indefinite carryover • The NOL carryover can only offset 80% of taxable income

For decades, the Internal Revenue Code has offered corporations “carryback” and “carryforward” opportunities for net operating losses (defined as years when tax-deductible expenses exceed taxable revenue). The carryback allows businesses that have experienced a net operating loss, or NOL, to apply those losses to past (profitable) years — meaning they can subtract the NOL from that year’s taxable income and receive a refund. Similarly, the carryforward allows companies to apply those losses to future, profitable tax years.

These revisions to the tax code complicate things for businesses attempting to make use of NOL tax deductions. Because NOLs that arose in tax years beginning on or before Dec. 31, 2017 will not be subject to the 80% taxable income limit, taxpayers will have to distinguish between the two types of NOLs when computing the NOL deduction on their tax returns. Basically, NOLs generated before 2018 have a 20year carryforward but can be used to offset 100% of taxable income, while NOLs generated after 2017 have indefinite carryforward but can only offset 80% of taxable income.

The reasoning behind these rules is that taxpayers in the U.S. are taxed on their income, so not giving companies a break when they lose money would amount to an unfair tax burden. Sounds simple enough, right? Unfortunately, like many provisions of the Internal Revenue Code, the rules surrounding NOLs are complex. And changes resulting from the A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

26 • OCT - NOV ‘19

Companies may find that these pre-2018 “super NOLs” are more valuable to offset future tax liability. However, these NOLs may also be subject to limitations, and a company cannot safely assume they will be fully available for 2018 and future years.

Also affecting the use of NOL tax deductions is Section 382, which puts further limitations on the use of NOLs and other tax attributes when a corporation undergoes an ownership change. An ownership change per Section 382 occurs when there is a change in ownership of a loss corporation that results in a more than 50% increase in the value of stock owned by 5% or more shareholders over a three-year testing period.

Precision Swiss Turning & Production Screw Machining

The impetus for introducing Section 382 was that a corporation’s NOL can, counterintuitively, actually be quite valuable on the market. Together, these changes to NOL rules will be particularly relevant in industries like life sciences, where companies commonly incur NOLs during the R&D phase. Common transactions that would trigger a Section 382 ownership change include issuance of stock to raise capital, issuance of certain convertible debt instruments, and mergers and acquisitions. Once an ownership change is determined, the Section 382 limitation must be calculated to accurately determine the amount of NOLs that are available to offset future taxable income. This includes calculation of the value of the old loss corporation, removal of liquid assets for anti-stuffing provisions, and computation of any net realized built-in gain or loss. To learn more about Section 382 limitations and whether your business’s NOLs and credits may be subject to the limitations, contact JulieWest at jwest@ bpmcpa.com or Gladys Tam at gtam@ bpmcpa.com.

Manufacturing activity in the United States fell for the second month in a row, while the World Trade Organization predicted that the growth in global trade would slacken significantly. A key measure of activity in the services sector — which accounts for two-thirds of the country’s output — also cooled.Still, employers kept hiring at a steady if unremarkable pace. This report revised job figures for July and August, adding a total of 45,000. “We’re still on a three-month track of over 150,000 jobs per month and that says to me that the economy is still expanding well,” Mr. Tannenbaum said. 3 Actions Congress Can Take Now to Help Small Manufacturers With Congress now back in session after its August recess, funding the government for the next fiscal year is an urgent priority. This is an important opportunity to strengthen proven federal programs that help small manufacturers prepare for the future. New technologies like generative design, additive manufacturing (3D printing), AI and robotics are radically changing the industry. These technologies are breaking down walls that have long existed between digital design and the physical manufacturing process, allowing for faster and more cost-effective development and fabrication of innovative products. We need to ensure that these revolutions in digital manufacturing are accessible to product design and manufacturing firms of all sizes. Here are three actions Congress can take today to prepare small manufacturers for the future of digital manufacturing. 1. Support Long-Term Viability of the Manufacturing USA program

The Manufacturing USA program is a national network of 14 manufacturing institutes aimed at advancing development of technologies that will increase U.S. competitiveness. America Makes (Youngstown, OH) focuses on additive manufacturing, and MxD (Chicago, IL) focuses on digital processes and workflows. Additional institutes specialize in advanced composites, robotics, photonics and other areas of advanced manufacturing. We have seen firsthand how the Manufacturing USA institutes successfully unite industry, academia and government to foster technology development and deployment, and support upskilling and education. For example, MxD has launched numerous workforce development initiatives, including a massive open online course (MOOC) on digital manufacturing and design, an assistance program for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), and workshops for middle and high school students on STEM education and digital manufacturing. Autodesk recently established a Generative Design Field Lab at MxD to provide training on advanced digital design and fabrication tools. Though successful, the Manufacturing USA program needs lasting, sustainable federal funding and support to maintain and expand the program. Federal funding provides the seed money to start the institutes and recruit partners from industry and academia.Yet, in many cases, the initial funding does not offer them enough time to become self-sustaining, and many critical areas of advanced manufacturing are not yet covered. The American Manufacturing Leadership Act, which recently passed the House, and the Global Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing Act are similar bipartisan bills in Congress that would support the program’s long-term viability by increasing federal funding, enhancing coordination between institutes, and prioritizing education and workforce training. Congress can bolster the program

by enacting key elements of both bills and providing sufficient, long-term funding for current and future institutes. 2. Fully fund the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) program The Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) is another federal program that aids small manufacturers. With facilities in all states and Puerto Rico, it helps manufacturers adopt advanced manufacturing technologies, techniques and business best practices. The results are impressive. In 2017, the program connected with nearly 27,000 manufacturers, fostered more than $12 billion in sales and helped create or retain more than 100,000 US manufacturing jobs. The MEP program, like Manufacturing USA, is a public-private partnership. Federal funding pays half the costs with the other half coming from state and local governments and the private sector. The program is a wise investment of federal dollars, returning nearly $14.50 to the federal treasury in taxes for every $1 spent. Congress must ensure that the MEP program is adequately funded so it can continue assisting small manufacturers to be more innovative and competitive. It should also strengthen the partnership between the MEP and Manufacturing USA programs, as proposed in the American Manufacturing Leadership Act and the Global Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing Act, so they leverage the resources of the other to better serve small firms. 3. Enact the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Act The Smart Manufacturing Leadership Act is a bipartisan effort to expand federal training programs that help SMBs adopt “smart manufacturing” technologies.

The legislation directs the Secretary of Energy to develop a national smart manufacturing plan, expands existing Department of Energy programs to assist SMB manufacturers in adopting these technologies and provides federal grants to states to establish similar training programs. In addition to improving manufacturing competitiveness, the legislation is estimated to save consumers $5 billion in energy costs by 2040 while reducing carbon emissions equivalent to taking 116 million cars off the road. The bill defines smart manufacturing broadly to include digital product design and simulation, digital design and simulation of factory production lines, digitally connected supply chain networks and even digital design of factory buildings. It recognizes that truly “smart manufacturing” encompasses how you design a product, how you make a product, how you design your factories, and how you connect the supply chain. These legislative initiatives will help prepare small manufacturers for the future, and they each have bipartisan support. Congress should act on them without delay. The third capability is in power conversion, which includes inverters that convert DC to AC to power electric motors via wide-bandgap electronic devices using silicon carbide and gallium nitride semiconductors.

BAE is focusing its investment in these product areas and on the regionalaircraft market, moving down into UAM, while looking at both hybridelectric and all-electric applications. “We will announce the first platforms soon,” he says. Electrification is not a new area for the U.S. arm of UK-headquartered BAE. The company has produced hybrid-electric drivetrains for some 12,000 transit buses, plus systems for the maritime, rail and military vehicle markets. “Aerospace is just a new application of our energy management and power conversion technologies,” says Premkumar. BAE Systems produces hybrid-electric drivetrains for transit buses, plus propulsion systems for boats, light rail and military vehicles. Credit: BAE System In aerospace, BAE is now in the productization phase. Prototypes are expected to be available by late 2020/early 2021. “And our objective is to be ready to enter service in 2023-25,” he says. This supports the time frames established by several developers of electric regional and UAM aircraft. At the core of BAE’s integrated controls product is its long experience developing fly-by-wire (FBW) flight controls. “A typical fly-by-wire

system takes inputs from the operator and aircraft sensors and outputs commands. For electric or hybrid, we have to add motors and energy management into that,” he says. “It can’t be stand-alone, it has to be integrated,” says Premkumar, as propulsion is often also used for flight control in electric aircraft. “So to us, it is taking what we’ve already created and adding in what we have learned from ground and maritime to add functionality to the control hardware.” FBW is already moving from only expensive commercial and military platforms into less costly regional and vertical-lift aircraft, so BAE is developing a new generation of hardware. “Our goal is to make it more cost-effective, simple and affordable without compromising on safety,” Premkumar says. On the energy management side, BAE is developing battery packaging solutions that are scalable and flexible for different technologies, from cylindrical and pouch cells to solid-state devices. “We are not trying to control or define the path where cells are going to go,” says Premkumar. “Cell manufacturers are looking for volume in all markets. They are trying to be applicable almost anywhere, whether it is a bus, boat or airplane. So we don’t want to constrain that innovation.” While the current focus is on optimized packaging for today’s mature lithium-ion technology, BAE continues to evaluate lithium-sulfur, solidstate and other advanced battery chemistries. “We are looking at all

these options to see what’s going to be next. We take those cells and put them into our own independent evaluation process. We run them through different operational cycles, for buses or aircraft, all-electric or hybrid-electric, and see what the limitations are so we have a better understanding of how to package those cells.” BAE is striving for as much commonality in hardware and software as possible across different markets to keep costs down. Elements such as the battery management system will be designed to the most demanding requirements and scaled to the application. Battery pack designs will differ between large and small platforms but be based on the same modules. “Our focus is on the modules,” Premkumar says. “We have two different packaging concepts, one for regional aircraft and another for UAM. But everything around the modules, electronics, software and controls we want to keep the same, because that’s where the investment and time is spent, and so we can improve our time to market.” BAE continues to produce 2,000 hybrid-electric bus drivetrains a year and expects the electric aircraft market to develop first through the hybridization of regional aircraft, which “makes perfect sense,” says Premkumar, adding, ”we will see this in the mid-2020s.” He also expects a “subregional” market for aircraft with 150-500-mi. range to develop. UAM will be the most challenging, “but by the mid-2020s, we will see initial operations start,” he says. Graham Warwick | Aviation Week & Space Technology A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Sacramento Regional Transit Negotiating For Low-Floor Siemens Light Rail Cars

The Siemens Mobility Sacramento train factory is in the running to build up to 76 light rail cars to help modernize Sacramento Regional Transit. Siemens has won awards for nearly $2 billion in new orders for heavy and light rail equipment in the past year from rail systems in the U.S. and Canada. All those orders have pushed employment at the Siemens factory on French Road in Sacramento County to more than 1,500. Sacramento Regional Transit District is still in negotiations with Siemens to procure new low-floor light rail trains, which don’t require steps and ramps like current SacRT light rail trains. The transit agency is going to convert its “Gold Line” Sacramento-to-Folsom route to low-floor trains over the next several years, said Jessica Gonzalez, Sac RT spokeswoman. Last month, transit systems in San Diego and Portland, Oregon, ordered a combined $200 million of Siemens low-floor S700 cars, which are more easily accessible to passengers in wheelchairs, without the need for ramps at stations. The S700 cars also feature wider aisles, making them easier to traverse with wheelchairs and bicycles. In the negotiations with Siemens, Sac RT is participating in a joint procurement effort with the San Diego MetropolitanTransit System, under which Sacramento will initially buy 23 light rail vehicles, Gonzalez said. If approved in the next few months by the Sac RT board of directors, Siemens could deliver the first four new cars as early as spring 2020, with the remaining cars to be delivered in 2022, she said.“We are still in negotiations with Siemens Mobility,” she said. The contract could be for the purchase of up to 76 cars during a seven-year contract term. Siemens Mobility provides rail vehicles, locomotives, components and systems to more than 25 agencies in cities including Washington D.C.; NewYork; Boston; Chicago; Phoenix; Seattle; Miami; Philadelphia; Denver; Baltimore; Salt Lake City; Minneapolis; Houston; Portland; Orlando, Florida; Sacramento; San Diego; St. Louis; Atlanta; and Charlotte, North Carolina. Two years ago, Nissan hired the studio Man Made Music for what seemed like a straightforward task: Design a sound that its quiet electric vehicles could play to announce themselves on the road. The automaker wasn’t just splurging on a flashy feature. It was preparing for a federal regulation set to take effect next year that would require all hybrid and electric vehicles, which are quieter than their gas-guzzling ancestors, to emit noise at certain speeds for pedestrian safety. Last month, the agency that oversees the rule, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, proposed changing it to let automakers offer drivers a suite of sounds. For now, though, Nissan plans to include just one with its electric Leaf next year: “Canto,” a resonant hum created by Man Made Music whose pitch rises as the car accelerates. Designing such sounds is a complex undertaking, according to Joel Beckerman, the founder of Man Made Music. With Canto, the team had to address safety and maintain a brand identity, all in a 3-second loop that is distinctive yet doesn’t stand out. “If we do our job in this kind of situation, then you don’t notice what we did at all,” Beckerman said. “It just becomes natural, it’s just a part of your life, it’s a part of your environment. When you get it wrong, that’s when people notice.” The team at Man Made Music, which is used to developing audio for TV, movies and radio, spent nearly half of 2017 working on the sound, a layering of sampled wind and string instruments, and analog and digital synth sounds. “A surprising element we found ourselves relying on were pure ‘sine waves’ from analog synthesizers,” Danni Venne, the studio’s creative director on the Nissan project, said in an email. “We also found that adding bits of ‘white noise’ to the mix gave us a lot of control to shape and color the sound. It’s almost like we built ‘Canto’ from fundamental building blocks of sound.” While the advent of quieter hybrid and electric vehicles presents an opportunity to build such sounds from scratch, there is a long history of sound design in the automotive industry. Muscle cars have their distinctive throaty growl. Harley Davidson motorcycles have that syncopated “potato-potato-potato” chug. (That’s really what they’ve called it.)

There is also a history of maintaining zombie sounds long after technology has made them obsolete. On smartphones, for example, the actions of locking the device or taking photos are often accompanied by the noises 36 • OCT - NOV ‘19

of a mechanical lock or camera shutter. In financial apps, transactions are often accompanied by the sound of jingling coins or a cash register. In the case of hybrid and electric vehicles, though, the need for sound is about more than the user experience: It’s about safety. About a decade ago, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that hybrid electric vehicles were 35% more likely than those with internal combustion engines to be involved in a pedestrian accident. Hybrids were also 57% more likely to be involved in accidents involving bicycles. In 2010, Congress passed a law to enhance pedestrian safety, instructing the agency to craft a rule mandating that hybrid and electric vehicles emit noise. The rule was finalized in 2016 and requires that such noises be produced when the car is driving at speeds up to 30 kilometers per hour (not quite 19 mph). Above that, tire, wind and other noises were warning enough, it deemed. The move was celebrated by the blind community.

We believe that we are stronger and more viable when we make something for USA Manufacturing!

As a result, major carmakers have been working on crafting sounds to meet those requirements. Jaguar, for example, said it worked for four years on the futuristic noise for its I-PACE SUV. For the 2020 model of the Chevrolet Bolt, General Motors designed the vehicle’s sound in-house, using a quiet electric whirring as a starting point, according to Todd Bruder, the engineer who led development of the sound. The Efficiency Arms Race Gas turbines are prized above all for their efficiency: their ability to take natural gas and turn as much of it as possible into power. Just a decade ago, cracking 60% efficiency in a combined-cycle power plant, which uses both gas and steam to generate electricity, was considered a feat indeed, like breaking the sound barrier or running a four-minute mile. That changed in 2014, when GE launched its line of ultra-efficient HA turbines — and the record-keepers had to get busy. In 2016, the first power plant with GE’s 9HA turbine, located in France, scored a GuinnessWorld Record by clocking in at 62.22% net efficiency. Two years later, a power plant with a 7HA turbine in Japan hit 63.08% gross efficiency. But GE Power, which builds equipment for the power generation industry, is still aiming higher: It’s introduced the 7HA.03, the latest word in gas turbine efficiency. It’s r ight there in the name: The “H” in HA stands for “highefficiency,” the “A” for “air-cooled.”The first two units of the 7HA.03 will be installed in Florida Power & Light Company’s Dania Beach Energy Center, where less than a percentage point in efficiency gains will translate to big savings. The machine, which can supply 640,000 U.S. homes, will allow FPL to squeeze .4% more power from every cubic foot of natural gas relative to GE’s prior 7HA.02 product, potentially saving the utility close to $1 million a year on its gas bill. The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon Continuous Improvement

By Stephen Hannemann

Since the economic crash of 2007 and 2008, manufacturing in the United States has experienced radical restructuring. Manufacturers have invested in the most advanced and sophisticated equipment, bolstered quality systems, and revamped assembly lines and shop floors to streamline workflow and throughput. Continuous improvement took on a whole new dynamic with the makeup of CI campaigns covering all facets of manufacturing. Forward-thinking shop owners and m a n a g e r s a re now taking CI another quantum step further by suggesting continuous improvement must be personal. Personal growth or personal continuous improvement is paramount – from ownership down the management chain, through production personnel, all the way to the man or woman at the shipping dock. For owners and managers, the ability to inspire and empower will transform your organization to higher levels of achievement. Ever since I started my pattern making apprenticeship in 1961, I have maintained

Several months ago I spent three days giving talks at a company that was experiencing an abnormal percentage of reject parts. My opening at those meetings went as follows: “When you first open eyes in the morning, do you jump out of bed and say, ‘Oh boy! I get to go to the plant today and make products that will be used by millions of people all around the world!’ Or – do you do you roll over and say or think, ‘Oh God, do I have to go to work today?’”You can imagine the varied expressions on the employees’ faces. The first response is an attitude of gratitude. The second is an attitude of entitlement. Keeping this article in a positive vein, I won’t go into the negatives of an entitlement mindset. I do not have a Pollyanna view about life, and being in manufacturing all my working life, I fullunderstand how events

Portable Laser Measuring Device arise that are not conducive to every day being a happy party. Nor do I believe in a tight skilled labor market that owners or managers should infer the employees are damn lucky to have a job. Over the next several issues in this column, I will share a series of articles on personal continuous improvement, on how positive attitudes will improve quality, throughput and profitability, by inspiring and empowering people throughout your organization. To keep the articles visually interesting, I will include photos of challenging parts and projects requiring positive and solution-oriented attitudes from owners, managers, and employees to achieve successful outcomes. The companies that excel are the ones that understand people are their most important asset and are taking continuous improvement a step further.

SMH Inc. – “The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon”

Flir Buys IP And Assets Of Shuttered Drone Company

Thermal imaging company Flir Systems Inc. has acquired the intellectual property and certain operating assets of the shuttered drone company Aria Insights Inc. Aria, which had been called CyPhy Works up until January, abruptly ceased operations March 21. The company, which was founded by iRobot co-founder Helen Greiner, developed a small, tethered unmanned aerial system.

REDUCING TORQUE REACTION DOESN’T HAVE TO BE COMPLICATED QX Series™ Ergonomic Tightening Systems Control and ergonomics, not compromise - that is what the QX Ergonomic Tightening System is all about. QX ETS offers all the capabilities found in the QX Series™ platform, without the torque reaction.

The drone connects to a base station or vehicle through a microfilament wire and allows for secured communication and continuous power. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The move is part of an ongoing strategic shift by Flir to expand beyond sensor making. The company had built its business on developing thermal imaging technology used by industrial, military and commercial customers. It has started buying drone companies as part of this strategic shift to offer more robust products to meet customer needs, CEO Jim Cannon told the Business Journal earlier this summer.

Ergonomic Mode: With the lowest energy pulses, is ideal for hand joints or when arm wrist or tool angles are most difficult

2. Performance Mode: With Medium energy pulse, is the best all-purpose mode

3. Productivity Mode: With the highest energy pulses, is the fastest mode. Ideal for soft joints or when high production rates are required

Earlier this year, the company made two other major drone acquisitions. In January it bought Canadian d r o n e m a ke r Aeryon Labs for $200 million. In February it announced the acquisition of Massachusettsbased Endeavor Robotics Holdings Inc. for $385 million.

“Tethered UAS systems are becoming an increasingly valuable tool for force protection, border security, and critical infrastructure protection,” said David Ray, president of FLIR’s Government and Defense business in a written statement. “Aria’s innovative technology and IP assets will enable us to enhance current capabilities and advance the range of solutions we can deliver to customers in this growing market segment.”

The Aria assets will be par t of Flir’s Unmanned Systems and Integrated Solutions Division.

“We are proud of the technology our team developed through the operations of CyPhyWorks and Aria, and we believe FLIR offers the best opportunity to see it make a difference and support critical missions in the years ahead,”Vandenbrook said in a written statement. Source: The Robot Report

Lance Vandenbrook, CEO of Aria, said the Flir deal offered the best home for the company’s technology.
