Sustained job creation drives up Americans’ wages, as the past year and a half saw the strongest earnings gains since the recession. Average hourly earnings grew 3.1 percent yearover-year, marking the 18th consecutive month of growth of 3 percent or more.Wages rose even faster for production and non-supervisory workers, who saw 3.3 percent year-over-year growth.

In the precision manufacturing arena, we must hire team members that will come to the table with key attributes: good work ethics, good team skills, a good math aptitude, and a solid base of manufacturing skills. We need team members that will show up on time, with a positive attitude, get along with others, and are trainable. My peers in manufacturing management say it’s hard to find good people to fill the open slots for their growing businesses. The resume looks good, but just getting them to show up for the interview is a hard task. Maybe they are in so much demand they are bombarded with offers, maybe your benefits are not enough to make them want to cross your threshold, or maybe they feel they are not qualified enough in your particular field of manufacturing so they wither away into a self perceived misdirection of job hunting. Either way I’m hearing it’s hard to find good folks. I might recommend a tact some of my friends in the precision machining businesses are taking. They start with the top three attributes they’re looking for: good attitude, good basic manufacturing skills, and good work ethic. If the future employees of ‘XYZ Machining’ have fair to good skills that need some training, they will invest into the new hire by offering a base of good benefits like healthcare, vacation time, 401k plans, great work environment, and a family atmosphere. You can have the best machines in the world, you can have the top customers in the world, and the best systems and ERP in the world, but if you don’t have great employee team members, you have nothing. I think my fellow manufacturing pros are finally learning times are great, but times are very different than they were 20 years ago. We must focus on what our business is made of, good people. Without them we have no viable business horizon.

us the advantages of purchasing the Citizen M32 from you. So when you introduced to us the work piece unloader, the adaptive guide bushing, along with you standing behind what you sell, and promising that if the machine does not perform as proposed, that you would remove the machine it made our decision easier. I must say that was one of the best decisions we have made for our production demands and quality. The machine actually performed much better than you had stated in your time studies. We were able to take parts that ran a cycle time of 60-70 seconds on our turning centers and reduce the cycle time to a new time of 28-30 seconds. Since the purchase of the first machine in 2007 we have added an additional M32, two of the L32’s and an A32. With the acquisition of these machines we have moved a majority of our work from our turning centers and placed it on the Citizens. We have reduced cycle times by as much as 68% and reduced our cost by up to 50% while creating additional manufacturing capacity and improving our quality. Page, your part and technical support has been excellent. When we have ran into a problem with a machine your staff is quick to respond whether it is with a conversation over the phone to resolve an issue or to provide us with in house service. You have a great team of technicians that know the product very well and can provide the quick service and turn around that is necessary for today’s manufacturers

famous explorers, the GPS III team nicknamed GPS III SV03 “Columbus” after the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. GPS III SV03 is the latest of up to 32 next-generation GPS III/GPS III Follow-On (GPS IIIF) satellites Lockheed Martin has designed and is building to help the Space Force modernize today’s GPS constellation with new technology and capabilities. “Every day, more than four billion civil, commercial and military users rely on the Positioning, Navigation andTiming (PNT) services provided by 31 GPS satellites launched since 1997,” saidTonya Ladwig, Lockheed Martin’s Program Manager for GPS III. “We are excited to help the Space Force refresh the constellation to ensure U.S. and allied forces always have the best technology and that the U.S. Global Positioning System remains the gold standard for PNT.” GPS III is the most powerful and resilient GPS satellite ever put on orbit. Developed with an entirely new design for U.S. and allied forces, GPS III has three times greater accuracy and up to eight times improved anti-jamming capabilities over any previous GPS satellites in the

constellation. GPS III is also the first GPS satellite to broadcast the new L1C civil signal, which is shared by other international global navigation satellite systems, like Galileo, to improve future conne GPS III was intentionally designed to evolve with new technology and changing mission needs. The satellite’s evolutionary modular design will allow new “GPS IIIF” capabilities to start being added at the 11th satellite. These will include a fully digital navigation payload, a Regional Military Protection capability, an accuracy-enhancing Laser Retroreflector Array, and a Search & Rescue payload. Meanwhile, GPS III satellites are beginning to join the constellation. On Jan. 13, 2020, the first Lockheed Martin-built GPS III satellite, GPS III SV01 (“Vespucci”), was set “healthy and active” by the 2nd Space Operations Squadron (2 SOPS) at Schriever Air Force Base, in Colorado. 2 SOPS is now using the GPS III Contingency Operations (COps)-upgraded OCS ground control system to operate both the new GPS III and previously launched GPS satellites. GPS III SV02 (“Magellan”), launched on Aug. 22, 2019, has completed its on-orbit testing and is currently awaiting its turn for integration

into the constellation. GPS III SV03 has now been shipped to the Cape and on Jan. 21, 2020, the Space Force called up GPS III SV04 for a launch later this summer. GPS III SV05-09 are now in various stages of assembly and test at Lockheed Martin’s commercial-like large satellite production line for GPS III satellites near Denver. The company is expected to soon complete its critical design review with the Space Force to begin production on the first two GPS IIIF satellites under contract. “It’s an exciting time across the GPS mission as we bring together the best of our space, ground, and operations systems to help the United States Space Force modernize this critical national capability,” commented Johnathon Caldwell, Lockheed Martin’s vice president for Navigation Systems. Lockheed Martin is proud to be a part of the U.S. Space Force’s GPS III team. The GPS III team is led by the Production Corps, Medium Earth Orbit Division, at the Space Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center, at Los Angeles Air Force Base. 2 SOPS, at Schriever Air Force Base, manages and operates the GPS constellation for both civil and military users. depend on prompt deliveries to carry out their missions. So, when an important item gets lost in transport, it can be tough to track what went wrong between point A and point B. These proof of delivery (POD) problems can involve significant time and cost to resolve. In fact, some industry estimates put the cost of resolving POD problems at 10% or more of the total cost of operating a supply chain, said Jim Tyson, an SAIC expert in blockchain. To help our military customers who rely on frictionless supply chains, SAIC has developed a solution that uses blockchain technology. Blockchain is probably best known to the general public as the technology that fuels Bitcoin, a form of digital money. It is a shared, distributed ledger--a record of transactions-that is fully encrypted. Our solution uses open-source, permissioned blockchain platforms and Internet of Things sensor integration to improve the security and efficiency of supply chain operations. It allows the user to track and trace deliveries and detect counterfeit goods, while also providing a single, authoritative record that is transparent and tamper-proof. “Anything we can do to improve materiel readiness is of value,” Tyson said. “Enhancing POD tracking not only enables efficiency of the end-to-end delivery pipeline, but it also generates detailed and high-quality data that be analyzed to facilitate planning and identify future efficiencies.” SAIC’s solution is capable of being deployed

Capability, Maturity, Flexibility – SEWIP Block 3 on Track to Deliver Critical Electronic Warfare Improvement to the Fleet By Chad Tragakis As Electronic Warfare (EW) continues to shape the future battlespace, Northrop Grumman is advancing a critical capability for the U.S. Navy. The Surface ElectronicWarfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) protects surface ships from anti-ship missiles, providing early detection, signal analysis and threat warning. Three SEWIP block upgrades have been established and a fourth is planned. SEWIP Block 3, being developed by Northrop Grumman and the U.S. Navy Program Executive Office Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS), adds electronic attack to the SLQ-32(V) EW system, and is a cornerstone capability that will meet the urgent operational needs of the Fleet. The timing couldn’t be more important, as the pace and complexity of emerging threats continues to escalate.

In January this year, Northrop Grumman announced it had successfully reached a Milestone C decision from the U.S. Navy, reflecting the government-led review of the technology’s performance and readiness. The company’s navigation and maritime systems division soon launched low-rate initial production (LRIP) of the SEWIP Block 3 AN/SLQ32(V)7 system. That same month, Northrop Grumman opened a multimillion dollar, state-of-the-art high-bay facility, specifically designed for integration and testing of the system’s hardware and software. After successfully completing the manufacturing readiness assessment, demonstrating proven processes and equipment in place, the team launched material procurement and has started manufacturing the first two LRIP systems. An important milestone was recently reached with the production of the 500th RF module, Transmit and Receive components used in the SEWIP Block 3 system. As progress continues, Northrop Grumman is on track for targeted installation of the first SEWIP Block 3 system in 2021 on an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. With a long legacy of leadership and innovation in electronic warfare, Northrop Grumman has provided expertise to the legacy AN/SLQ-32 EW system for over four decades.Today, with the Navy now recognizing A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

the electromagnetic spectrum as a distinct warfighting domain, Northrop Grumman has continued to invest in advanced capabilities in electromagnetic maneuver warfare (EMW) and has introduced a number of innovative approaches to harness the full potential of the SEWIP system. SEWIP Block 3 provides game-changing capability for non-kinetic electronic attack options, and the system has the potential to do much more. From advanced communications to multirole waveforms, the multi-function applications for SEWIP Block 3 will provide enhanced mission capabilities to the Fleet while presenting opportunities for future cost-savings and reduced size, weight and power.

Powerful New Radars Level Up Our Protection Against Threats By Ellen Hamilton

Aircraft, missiles, rockets, mortars and artillery in the wrong hands pose an increased risk to the safety of U.S. service members, allies and civilians. These threats can be sophisticated or improvised, coming from hostile nations and non-state actors alike. The challenge of countering the wide range of threats is being met by systems with advances in integration, gallium nitride semiconductor technology and radar expertise. At the heart of any air and missile defense system is the radar, and at Northrop Grumman, radars have become more powerful, efficient and reliable through the introduction of gallium nitride-based microelectronic components. Northrop Grumman, with government partnership, has invested more than $350 million in GaN development, and this investment has seen the development and integration of GaN into a wide variety of land, air and spacebased military radar systems. To provide an optimal defense against airborne threats, warfighters need a single, unambiguous view of the battlespace and a network of sensors and shooters than can identify and neutralize targets. Designed to function as part of any net-centric command and control (C2) system, these versatile radars can detect and share data about incoming hostile fire and cue interceptors. The combination of Northrop Grumman’s software-defined radars with other powerful systems on the C4ISR network is a potent warfighter advantage. The Department of Defense continues to integrate Northrop

Grumman’s radars with its C2 systems. The Army and Marine Corps announced recently that they are working together to bring Northrop Grumman’s premier S-band ground radar into the Integrated Battle Command System. The Marine Corps has further plans to demonstrate the radar with Iron Dome, a system that the Army is acquiring for interim cruise missile defense. The Ar my has stated that missile defense is one of its top modernization priorities.

Western Sintering Automation of Powder Metal Components at its Finest! When yo u want t o compete in manufacturing, the first thing you must do is figure out how to automate your processes. Repeatable processing of any kind needs the help of robotics that are programmed to do the mundane tasks humans tire of. Initially the human sets up the job, programs the robot, proves the process and perfects it. Then, it’s time to turn it over to the one that never tires, never needs breaks, never goes to the bathroom, doesn’t call in sick, doesn’t go on vacations, and will run through the night until you show back up in the morning, rested and ready to start another project. That’s right, it’s our buddy the never tiring robot. Western Sintering Company (WSC) excels at problem solving, engineering, and offering their customers solutions that helps them fill their customers’ supply chain with repeatable quality parts every time. WSC furnishes a press and sinter, Powder Metal part solution.Their engineers design ridged tooling for a molding process that forms a metal powder into the finished shape of a part. The metal powder is pressed under several tons of force to a calculated density to net shape or a near net shape condition. The parts off the press are in what is called a “green state” where the powder is just being held together from the force of compaction and if dropped on the floor the parts would chip or break. The next step in the process is called sintering. In this process the parts are placed on ceramic trays and ran through a sintering furnace where the parts are heated in a controlled atmosphere up to a sintering temperature suited to the material and just below the metals melting point. The sintering temperature allows the powder metal particles to bond together and form a solid metal finished part. Yes, their expert engineers create a process that allows for high volume, consistent repeatable perfect parts every time. Their CNC machine shop can do what we call a ‘Kiss’ in the industry, to add any extra feature requirements they are not able to mold such as threads and undercuts. The powder is made from recycled metal and the press and sinter to net shape process, without the need for machining from a large piece of A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

raw metal, is why Powder Metal is a “Recognized Green Technology”. WSC uses the same feed stock powder as Additive 3D Manufacturing process, but with hard tooling, high speed presses and robotic automation parts are pressed quickly, uniformly, consistently, and faster than most forms of manufacturing.

It’s hard to find qualified humans in manufacturing. Bringing on robotics has transformedWestern Sintering. Fast is good! But, haste does not make waste in WSC’s engineering process. Once the process is perfected with tooling, the right density, the perfect heat processing, then the process has to be formulated into the robot’s realm, one that continues to be monitored by WSC’s team. The more steps that can be automated, the more possible problems or inconsistencies are ruled out, and complete perfection is inherent.

Companies have utilized WSC for this unique process for over 55 years and as production moved to thousands; it was imperative to automate the process. Jeff Wood, President and Dave Morasch Vice President of WSC worked to create an automated process that could be tracked, improved, and moved to a production scale of manufacturing. Since robotics and pressing metal had not been widely implemented at WSC this management team sent two of their expert team to the Fanuc factory. Once trained, WSC was able to automate the handling of the powder metal parts from the pressing equipment to ceramic sintering trays. This eliminated the tedious handling of soft compacted powder metal parts by human hands. When you are dealing with thousands of parts this is a Godsend for the operating staff as the mundane process can be taxing and not to mention a boring feat for humans. WSC started out the old fashion way many years ago. Founder, John Rector started out at the age of 26 leading a dozen tool and die makers at the DuPont plant in Kansas City forming 16mm cannon cartridges for the war. John received his first major promotion because he could compute square roots in his head. DuPont sent him to the ‘Manhattan Project’, a secret weapons project in the eastern Washington desert to perfect his work and processes. John designed a process to press and sinter aluminum boron that was used for control rod material for the historic B reactor. John envisioned that rather than machining parts the common way from raw solid material, he could press powder with tons of pressure into a form and take it to the furnace to sinter it to a molded, net, or almost net shape and density. Once molded these parts if not molded net shape, could be minutely machined into a perfect parts quickly and uniformly with a secondary machining operation. As an ISO9001 company, WSC maintains an expertise in many varieties of metals from alloy steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, nickel silver (white brass), bronze, aluminum, and many others. WSC aligns approved outside processing partners to apply finish plating or powder coating to the powder metal parts. The end result is quality parts, that meet their customers’ expectations. Carefully packaged and shipped to arrive just in time to their customers’ production line. WSC has maintained their quality service by continuing to add state of the art processing, from 200ton compacting press machines, 17 zone sintering controlled atmosphere furnaces, to now robotics that aid in handling the pressed parts off the presses. This all adds to the goal of WSC to move the production of their customers parts into a perfect state of production that will allow no human error, and aid in the production of finished parts that meet their customers production schedules of higher volume parts, on time.

90,000 PSI of compacting pressure, robotic handling, high sintering temperatures, controlled atmosphere furnaces it is a delicate game of making sure your process works to form the perfect Powder Metal part solution. Starting with metal powder and finishing with a solid part. Wow!

If you are looking for an excellent choice for powder metal parts production where precision is required, look nowhere else but, Western Sintering Company. For more information on Western Sintering Inc., WSC and how they can automate your processes contact Dave Morasch at 509-375-3096 Ext. 16,

Silver Jubilee: Trailblazing GE Jet Engine, For Decades The World’s Most Powerful, Celebrates Its 25th Birthday

by Chris Noon

The GE90 was a big bet by Brian Rowe, the GE unit’s CEO at the time. Rowe believed in Boeing’s concept that large jetliners flying long-distance, international routes could be powered by just two engines, instead of four as was typical, reducing both fuel and maintenance costs. But getting there meant supersizing the engines and developing parts from materials never used in civilian aviation before. “The GE90 will be the engine that will lead the way to the 21st century,” Rowe said. The tension in the room turned into relief as FAA representatives leaned forward and signed the documents, declaring the GE90 engine A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

officially airworthy. “It had been years of blood, sweat and tears to get to this point,” remembers Phillip Rambo, who was present in the room as a senior engineer on the GE90 program. The rest, as they say, is history. The GE90 and the 777 went on to reinvent the logistics, economics and aesthetics of jet travel, enabling an era of twin-engine airplanes and smooth, cost-efficient, long-haul flights. The numbers tell one part of the story. Close to 3,000 GE90 engines have rolled off the production line since 1995, recording approximately 28 million flights and nearly 90 million flight hours between them. British Airways was the first airline to fit its Boeing 777 fleet with the GE90 in 1995; today more than 70 carriers operate over 2,500 of the engines, most of which are the higher-thrust variant, the GE90-115B. Emirates, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific and Air France all operate over 100 of the engines, principally on the best-selling Boeing 777-300ER, where “ER” stands for “extended range.” Range and efficiency were one set of attributes that made the engine attractive to airlines.Another one was the GE90’s raw power. The engine held the record as the world’s most powerful jet engine for nearly 15 years, clocking in at 127,900 pounds of sustained thrust in 2002. This was on a par with the solid-fuel rockets used by NASA in the 1960s space exploration.Together, efficiency, reliability and power boosted the extended operations (ETOPS) of a Boeing 777-300ER to around 345 minutes, meaning that the airplane could, if needed, fly for nearly six hours on a single engine from the nearest airport where it could safely land. “That really opened up the southern hemisphere and stretched the legs of twin-engine operations,” Rambo says.

Over the years, the GE90 also became a symbol of innovation as well as power. The engine has served as a petri dish for all the cutting-edge jet engine technology that is commonplace today. Rambo says the recent successful test flight of the Boeing 777X, which uses the GE9X engine, may have felt like the dawning of a new era, but it was really the continuation of a dynasty. That’s because the GE9X contains composite, rather than metal, fan blades, and several 3D-printed parts. “Those both started with the GE90,” he says. Made from light and tough carbon-fiber composites, the huge fan blades were such an engineering breakthrough that to this day, no other engine maker has been able to catch up. Before the GE90, engines used fan blades made from titanium, a silvery metal with relatively low density and high strength. But GE Aviation engineers began experimenting with other materials with the objective of reducing the total weight of the engine and its fuel burn, while boosting its power and performance. The solution was a material discovered by GE co-founder Thomas Edison: carbon fiber.

Starting with the GE90, all of GE’s large new engines boast fan blades made from carbon-fiber composites, thin sheets woven from carbon fibers and fused together like phyllo dough with a special resin. This has helped to reduce the weight of jet engines by hundreds of pounds, which allows blades to be bigger. That’s crucial, because larger blades can move more air, which boosts the GE90’s all-important bypass ratio — or how much thrust comes from the fan at the front of the engine compared to its core. The bypass ratio on the GE90 is 9:1, which means the engine is sending nine times more air around the core and through the between GE Aviation and Snecma, the first ones were made in Cincinnati. “They weren’t cheap,” Announcements & Releases Continued fan than through the core. Counting Antarctic Penguins With AI Antarctica’s penguin populations are at serious risk. According to a 2019 study from the British Antarctic Survey, the world’s largest Emperor penguin colony has suffered unprecedented breeding issues for the past three years, is uniquely vulnerable to ongoing and projected climate change, and could virtually disappear by the year 2100. In order to study penguin populations, researchers first need to accurately count them. A new crowd counting solution from Intel AI Builder member and data science company Gramener could enable researchers to use computer vision to count penguin populations faster and more accurately. “Penguin Awareness Day, it’s important to understand the impact we are having on penguin populations in Antarctica,” said Naveen Gattu, COO and cofounder of Gramener. “We believe that AI has the power to help researchers identify what is causing their decline, and are proud to be using Intel AI technologies for applications of social impact. Our crowd counting solution has the potential to help us better understand penguin populations.” Gramener used an image dataset of Antarctica’s penguin colonies from the Penguin Watch Project, which included images from over 40 locations. In partnership with Microsoft AI for Earth, Gramener researchers trained a deep learning model to count the penguins. The

This solution could help researchers overcome challenges in manually counting penguins from camera traps, which can be tricky due to perspective distortion, penguins standing too close together or clustering, and diversity of camera angles. Not everyThomas Edison invention turned to gold. In 1893, after he sold his stake in General Electric for a reported $1.5 million (more than $430 million in today’s money), Edison invested it in an enterprise designed to supply iron ore to U.S. steelmakers. As usual, paying attention to every detail, he “designed his own studded crushers that enabled the use of larger boulders lifted by the world’s largest steam shovel,” according to InSight, a magazine published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. By 1902, the venture was a bust. “Well, it’s all gone, but we had a hell of good time spending it,” Edison reportedly quipped. Thomas Edison is best-known as the inventor of the modern light bulb, and many also know that he co-founded GE in 1892 when he merged his company, Edison General Electric Company, withThomson-Houston Electric Company. Even though he could have held onto more money by maintaining a stake in GE, he used it to fund his passion for inventing. Edison churned out an astonishing 1,093 U.S. patents, enough to warrant the nickname for his Menlo Park lab: Invention Factory. Since 1983, the U.S. has honored Edison and other inventors on Edison’s birthday, Feb. 11. Edison’s curiosity seemed to have no boundaries. It seems almost quaint to imagine that today’s immersive wide-screen blockbusters trace their roots to the Kinetograph, a motion picture camera that Edison invented in 1889. Always a believer in Always seemingly ahead of his time, Edison vertical integration, he also was also experimenting with batteries for cars, built a studio, Black Maria, submarines, and other technology. Here he to produce the films; he poses with a Bailey Electric Car. also created Edison Studios, which formally supervised and distributed close to 1,200 productions. By this time, Edison had already created the phonograph, the 1877 invention that would earn him the moniker the Wizard of Menlo Park. Borrowing from the physics of the telegraph and the telephone, Edison’s invention exploited the ability of a simple grooved diaphragm to respond to sound vibrations. The key was to record these impressions on a tin foil wrapped around the diaphragm through the movement of a needle. Playback was achieved by tracing these steps in reverse. The first such recording in history? A memorable couplet from “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” recited by the wizard himself. The invention was even more remarkable given that Edison himself was mostly deaf. Always looking to push the envelope, Edison used his inventions as bases for further tinkering. Taking the phonograph a step further, he came up with talking dolls he called “little monsters,” which from all indications could give Chucky a run for his money. Edison’s doll, featuring a miniature phonograph within its tin body, started out fairly innocuously. When hand-cranked, the phonograph was to recite children’s nursery rhymes.

The problem was that the machine also made creepy crackling and hissing sounds, enough to scare away the young customers it was meant to attract. The litany of inventions also includes an electric pen, which Edison patented in 1871 a year before the phonograph. Edison designed the device to automate the print duplication process that copy machines execute so skillfully today. A sharp vibrating needle traced the contours of written letters and essentially created a stencil for each page. Users would simply have to run ink over the stencil to duplicate the page over and over again. The invention did not translate well to its intended audience, though, and quickly sank into obsolescence. But the idea of using a vibrating needle to create patterns would later be inked into existence for a new kind of service: body tattoos. Glamorous or not, many of Edison’s inventions set the stage for revolutionary engineering advances implemented by the very company he co-founded: GE. The path to the modern light bulb wound its way through wafer-thin slices of bamboo. Exposing the pieces to intense heat vaporized the cellulose in the bamboo, leaving behind a carbon scaffolding. Edison used these carbon fibers as the basis for his experiments with the light bulb. While the 1,200 hours of performance that they delivered was impressive for its time, the more promising tungsten filaments soon elbowed their carbon brethren out the picture. Decades on, new avatars of the carbon filament are being pressed into service as jet engine components. GE replaced the metal fan blades of its most powerful jet engines with their carbon-fiber composite counterparts for lighter and therefore more fuel-efficient aircraft. Engineers are

exploring more applications for this wonder material: as the building blocks for wind turbines, for instance, and for use in medical imaging machines. The X-ray machine, too, can trace its origin to Edison’s inventive genius. GE co-founder Elihu Thomson rejiggered the Edison light bulb to emit X-rays. With it came the X-ray machine and a dramatic ability to peek inside the human body a revolution in healthcare. Now GE engineers are leveraging DC to create “electrical superhighways” to transport electrical current from, for instance, offshore wind farms. Because there’s less leakage from DC transmission methods, long underwater cables efficiently carry the current to converters that switch it back to AC and feed it into the grid. Edison’s beloved DC lives on, and GE continues to build on Edison’s legacy. The inventor’s work in light approximately a third of his U.S. patents were related to electricity and power led to laser technology, the key to 3D printing, where laser is used to fuse metal powders into computerdesigned shapes and patterns. Thomas Edison’s first patent at age 22 went to the electrographic vote recorder, a device that used electric current as a way of quickly logging yes or no votes from legislators. While that won’t be seen in today’s Congress, other inventions including his work with the telephone are testament to the enduring legacy of a rich and awe-inspiring life. It’s fodder enough for a wide-screen blockbuster in its own right. Or a bestseller: “Edison,” the final book by the late Edmund Morris, was published last fall. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Boeing Forecasts $1.5 Trillion for Commercial Airplanes and Services in Southeast Asia Over the Next 20 Years Demand grown for aftermarket commercial services worth $785 billion Boeing [NYSE: BA] forecasts airlines in Southeast Asia will need 4,500 new airplanes over the next 20 years, valued at $710 billion at list prices. Single-aisle airplanes continue to be the main driver of capacity growth in Southeast Asia. This growth helps to stimulate the demand for commercial aviation services, which are forecasted to be worth $785 billion between 2019 and 2038. “Three countries from Southeast Asia –Vietnam,Thailand, and Indonesia – made the top 10 list of countries that added the most airline seat capacity since 2010.Vietnam has experienced the strongest growth out of the three at nearly 15% per year, followed by Thailand and Indonesia at approximately 10% respectively,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Commercial Marketing at Boeing. “With an expanding middle-class, in market that continues to liberalize, coupled with a strong domestic, regional and international tourism sector, Southeast Asia has become one of the world’s largest aviation markets.” While single-aisle airplanes dominate the forecast, this region will also require a significant amount of widebody airplanes, in terms of value and the number of units. The demand is driven by airlines adapting to the evolving business environment and new long-haul expansion opportunities. Widebody airplanes will make up 19% of new airplane deliveries, enabling carriers in the region to serve new international long-range city pairs.

The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon You Are What You Think

By Stephen Hannemann

In the last article on continuous improvement in the workplace, I quoted Zig Ziglar, “Hire for attitude, train for skill.” I also stated that in my next piece, we would explore making work and challenges at work fun, so here we go. You are what you think! What we allow to live in our minds is often what comes out of our mouths and reflects our attitudes and the person we Injection mold cavity insert are. I am not referring to an occasional gibe spoken in jest, but a mindset. Our core attitudes define us. They affect everyone around us, our colleagues at work, our families and friends, and the way they either respond or react to us. Many well documented scientific and practical studies have been completed since the advent of positive psychology in 1998. The groundbreaking r e s e a r c h confirmed people w i t h p o s i t i ve, happy mindsets and attitudes are more productive, Misc. injection molded parts reliable and pleasant to be around. The research proves unequivocally. Happiness drives success – not the reverse. In the course of these articles we will discover what an incredibly powerful organ our human brain is.You’ll read inThe Happiness Advantage, how the studies of young children, those stimulated to be in a good or happy mood outperformed the ones who had not been stimulated. A nay-sayer might say, well, that may be great for kids but I’m 45 plus years, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Not true! We can stimulate and grow our brains at any age. At 77 years of age, I have been studying and A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

practicing positive psychology for a little over a year. I am more relaxed, in a better mood, more motivated, more productive, and have more energy than in years past – and it is sticking! To learn more on the subject of positive psychology invest in The Power of Your Attitude by Stan Toler and The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor. These books are readily available on Amazon Prime for under $25 for the pair, delivered to your door next day. Forward thinking companies adopting positive psychology are experiencing accelerated

production rates and increased profits in a happier work place. These are not blips, but documented sustained long term results. To start you journey, allocate space in your brain for positive thoughts only. When rising in the morning, try meditating – there are a number of disciplines you can choose. As a Christian, I spend my first waking hour in God’s word receiving His love. Exercise, get adequate rest.Think of things that make you happy on your way to work. Why Conduct Internal Audits?

By Bretta Kelly, owner BMSC, LLC, edited and hand illustrated by Joshua Kelly

The intention of an internal audit has always been to identify areas where a company can improve, and in no way intends to be a detriment to any employee, whatsoever. There are numerous methods for conducting internal audits. An example would be auditing a process against a procedure or referencing a checklist of requirements from the standard. A management team’s intention when conducting an internal audit is to acquire information regarding how the company as a whole can improve its processes, thereby improving the company itself. External Audits, on the other hand, simply intend to verify compliance. An External Audit validates the compliancy to Standard and Documents, however, Internal Audits do this as well. There is a requirement in the ISO 9001 Standard mandating the production of a company’s processes against the requirements of the ISO 9001 Standard, as well as the company’s defined, or documented Quality Management System. The point of conducting an Internal Audit prior to an external one is to outline the various opportunities a company has for improvement, so a company can resolve the issues and prepare itself for External Audits.

Use Internal Audit to

Find it First!

Audits are a company’s ultimate tools for measuring the effectiveness of its processes, people and training programs. Upon implementation of a management system, various audits are initiated in order to ensure proper implementation, effectiveness, and to verify whether or not documents match the actual processes. Once the management system reaches maturity, areas and processes are identified, and audited using analysis of the data previously acquired. An Internal Audit is the ultimate defense against External Audits, by a customer or an auditing registrar. Internal Audits are preventive programs designed to ensure continuous compliance to an organization’s quality policy, objectives, and system requirements.

When an individual is being audited, they are not meant to feel like they are taking a test; nobody will be disciplined if there is a finding or issue identified during an Internal Audit. Oppositely, the entire purpose of the audit is to uncover incorrect or ineffective processes, and more importantly to uncover methods of improving the processes afterward. This cannot be accomplished without the involvement of every employee, specifically through transparency and willingness to participate in the Internal Audit itself.

“This is the Golden Lasso. Besides being made from an indestructible material, it also carries with it the power to compel people to tell the truth. Use it well, and with compassion.” -Wonder Woman 77
