We’re all the same When we were young we were taught to have respect for our kind. We were also taught things we had to un-teach ourselves in time. Our path of right and wrong was either narrow, or wide open, not a closed mind. The acceptance we received helped us walk a certain way, to inspire our flight This is the way, the truth, and the light; we would follow with all our might. We’re all the same. Do we humans have no shame? We showed up unable to walk, to talk, easy prey, with help we learned our way. Our friends all had fingers and toes, so we would play, eager for the warmth of day. Life was bright with understanding, learning to mimic our family and friends. Living was a fun game, a continuous journey, and an evolution that never ends. Growing up we would change our paradigms, swept by the current trends. We’re all the same. Do we humans have no shame? The learning would never cease; we would rush to bite off another piece. We learned fire, free will taking us to our new desire, could burn us just the same. We wanted to fit in so we rushed to be different, changing the name, who to blame. Learning to love, learning to hate, with a fine line between, heaven could wait. Looking in the mirror we prayed to beat our prejudice, and not take the bait. We’re all the same. Do we humans have no shame? Years rushing by us, with no rudder to guide us, fate became the unanswered prayer. Believing in the oneness of it all, we could never be too short or too tall, never small. The universe is vast, endless they say, infinite in it’s way; it can’t end like a bad day. Our viewpoint in the night will change in the morning, with a little bright light. Our sight will be clear as we see our brother’s eyes are the same as ours, very dear. We’re all the same. Do we humans have no shame? - I hope we all embrace our oneness. We are of the same planet. Earthlings, I thank you for being a part of our industry and wish you well as we head into the holiday season. God bless you all! Kim Carpenter A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

How Nuclear Technology Will Get Us To Mars Faster Than Ever

We’ll soon have (nuclear) liftoff! Following the first phase of the Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations (DRACO) program, Lockheed Martin was notified by DARPA that we won the contract to develop and demonstrate a nuclear-powered spacecraft. The project will represent a rapid advancement in propulsion technology to benefit exploration and national defense. “This is a prime technology that can be used to transport humans and materials to the Moon,” said Kirk Shireman, vice president of Lunar Exploration Campaigns at Lockheed Martin Space. “A safe, reusable nuclear tug spacecraft would revolutionize cislunar operations. With more speed, agility and maneuverability, nuclear thermal propulsion also has many national security applications for cislunar space.” In addition to our long history and expertise in nuclear controls, Lockheed Martin is excited to partner with BWX Technologies on DRACO to develop the nuclear reactor and produce the special high-assay low-enriched uranium, or HALEU, fuel. 8 • OCT - NOV ’23

The in-space flight demo of the nuclear thermal rocket engine vehicle is slated to launch no later than 2027. You can’t get all the way to Mars without fuel – and a lot of it. Chemical propulsion has been the standard for spaceflight for decades, but if humans are to travel to Mars, they need a propulsion technology much more powerful. “When you get into needing the level of power it takes to advance our exploration of the Moon and send humans to Mars, the only way to do it is nuclear power,” said Rob Chambers, Director of Commercial Civil Space Strategy and Business Development at Lockheed Martin. “If you want to be able to explore cost-effectively, be Earth-independent and make going to Mars feasible, you need nuclear systems.” How Nuclear Energy Systems Work (Hint: They’re Safe) A l t h o u g h t h e y ’r e relatively new – nuclear systems for propulsion or electrical power are simple.

Fission-based systems work by splitting low-enriched uranium atoms in a reactor to create heat. Super-cooled hydrogen is flowed into the reactor and the heat from the uranium quickly turns the hydrogen into a very hot, pressurized gas. In nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP), the super-hot pressurized hydrogen is funneled out a nozzle to create a powerful thrust. The mechanics of an NTP engine are much simpler and vastly more efficient than chemical propellent engines. In fission surface power systems, the heat from the splitting of uranium atoms is converted to electricity. These systems can produce at least 40 kilowatts of power and can operate on permanently shadowed regions of the Moon.

A traditional chemical propulsion launch vehicle would lift a spacecraft off Earth’s surface and navigate it to a safe Earth orbit far out of the Earth’s atmosphere. Once in this orbit, the nuclear reactor would be turned on, and the fission process would start. This makes handling and launching a reactor with the high assay low enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel very safe. Defining the level of ground testing that’s needed to prove safe, effective operations in space is part of Lockheed Martin’s current efforts, too. “Ground testing helps us understand what the expected behavior and limitations of the nuclear reactor are and how we expect it to respond and interact with the control systems that we’re developing,” said John Bendle, Senior Manager, Strategy and Business Development, Human Space Exploration, Lockheed Martin. “Surface fission power would mean a stable, Earth-independent power source on the Moon and Mars,” said Lisa May, Principal Engineer and Next Gen Strategy Lead, Lockheed Martin. High-power fission-based systems on the Moon would enable splitting lunar water into hydrogen that can be used for propellant, and oxygen for astronauts to breathe. Time to Turn Vision into Reality Lockheed Martin’s space nuclear systems work includes three current contracts – a partnership with BWXT Technologies on both nuclear thermal reactor and fission surface power concepts for NASA and the Department of Energy, and a contract with the Defense Advanced

Research Projects Agency to develop a spacecraft concept design with NTP capability. While nuclear systems are an emerging field, Lockheed Martin has a long history and expertise in nuclear controls, having supported instrumentation and controls for both terrestrial power plants and Naval nuclear reactors. Lockheed Martin’s expertise in avionics, mission control and integration give us leverage. “Our discriminator also comes from our deep space exploration heritage, which requires the ability to do high-technology, first-of-a-kind missions,” said May. “We’ve also invested heavily in cryogenic hydrogen storage and transfer, as well as the overall nuclear reactor controls.” The company also built the radioisotope thermoelectric generators for NASA planetary missions such as Viking, Pioneer, Voyager, Apollo, Cassini and New Horizons. (877) 398-6061 www.coastaluminum.com Stoke Space Raises $100M To Build Its Next Reusable Rocket “This new round of funding is a huge vote of confidence in our team,” CEO and cofounder Andy Lapsa said in a news release. The four-year-old startup raised $75 million in 2021, which funded its build-out of nearly 200,000 square feet of space in Kent and at its test facility in Moses Lake. It has grown its team to nearly 100 people. IndustriousVentures led the Series B round, which included funding from new and existing investors such as Breakthrough Energy,Toyota Ventures and the University of Michigan, among several others. The news was delivered at Up.Summit, an annual industry conference held by Up.Partners to convene companies developing new transportation technologies. Stoke has said it aims to design a rocket capable of returning to service within 24 hours, dramatically lowering the cost of space travel. directors. “Stoke Space has a track record that speaks for itself,” Angel said. “I look forward to working alongside the team in order to support the development of a new space economy.” Stoke fired up the second-stage vehicle, named Hopper2, in midSeptember. Stoke Space’s reusable second-stage rocket took off to a height of 30 feet and landed at its Moses Lake test facility. STOKE SPACE As it moves into the next phase of development, the company said it has also settled on the name Nova for its first rocket. The rocket’s new appellation aims to recognize the history of engineering that has led to its designs, Lapsa said. “Our vehicle designs build on the ideas and achievements of prior generations,” he said. “The name Nova is a way to honor that past heritage while looking ahead to a very exciting future.” Stoke will use some of the new funding to redevelop the launch pad it was allocated for its eventual orbital flights at Launch Complex 14 in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The site was the origin of astronaut John Glenn’s 1962 voyage to space, making him the first American to reach orbit.

Spirit Aerosystems Reaches Contract Agreement For More Boeing Money Spirit Boeing 737 2Expand Boeing 737 fuselages made at Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, Kansas. Weeks after analysts called for a new agreement to help with costs between Wichita-based Spirit AeroSystems and Boeing, the two companies announced a plan Wednesday that includes an immediate $100 million infusion. The new agreement includes price increases for Spirit and a cash advance from Boeing to be used for tooling aimed at increasing production rates on 737 and 787 fuselages, Reuters reported. Spirit is Boeing’s largest supplier, including the full fuselage of the best-selling 737 Max. “Boeing is pleased to have reached a mutually beneficial agreement with Spirit AeroSystems,” the company said in a statement. “This agreement with our valued supplier will enhance operational stability in our production system and help us deliver on our customer commitments.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

The much-needed agreement caused Spirit’s stock to rise Wednesday. Aaron Glickman of CFRA, an organization that provides financial analysis, said Spirit “will get better pricing for its work on Boeing’s widebody 787 program,” as well as obtaining “some givebacks on the 737.” “Under this agreement, Spirit will obtain an incremental $190 million in revenues through 2033, with $455 million in improvements in 202325, partly offset by $265 million in reductions from 2026 to 2033,” Glickman said. “The next few quarters should remain challenging while quality control issues are ironed out, but we think SPR’s near-term outlook is brighter.” Spirit’s need for a new agreement Spirit’s former president, Tom Gentile, said at the Jefferies Industrial Conference this fall that because of increased costs and regulatory scrutiny in production, the payment plans with Boeing and Airbus “really is not sustainable for Spirit.” Patrick Shanahan, the company’s interim CEO after Gentile’s Sept. 30 resignation, worked at Boeing in all aspects of the supply chain and operations for more than three decades. “Boeing and Spirit will continue to work shoulder to shoulder to mitigate today’s operational challenges,” Shanahan said in a statement. “Our collective teams will focus on further generating supply-chain

performance and resiliency. This united effort to synchronize our production systems will enable greater market responsiveness and delivery assurance.” In the past year, manufacturing issues on Boeing planes caused delays in the delivery process for both Spirit and Boeing, the last one occurring in late summer when improperly drilled holes in some aft pressure bulkheads caused a delay in some deliveries by Boeing. Last week, it was learned that more holes might have been affected. By Alice Mannette – Reporter, Wichita Business Journal

Redefining Revolutionary: Lockheed Martin’s Next Generation Interceptor Progress Continues

The Lockheed Martin NGI will now move forward toward the next major program milestone, the Critical Design Review, continuing to evaluate opportunities to accelerate schedule. To get to this point, Lockheed Martin is leveraging decades of corporate experience and expertise, embracing digital tools, and building a lasting team to drive innovation.

NGI plays an important role as part of the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system. It is designed to protect the nation against long range ballistic missile attacks from rogue nations. And Lockheed Martin’s mature and reliable interceptor solution will help the warfighter stay ahead of these evolving threats. Read on for the latest milestones as Lockheed Martin is redefining revolutionary to deliver this capability.

Lockheed Martin has worked hard to reduce risk and mature the systems that make up its NGI. Proving the progress, the team validated the NGI program’s design for all elements through a series of subsystem PDRs with the MDA, announced in August. The company earned additional confidence in its offering through early and often testing of hardware and software.

The program executed its Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for the All-Up Round (AUR) interceptor—or, the complete interceptor—on September 29. This means our NGI has achieved a high level of technical rigor and continues to meet requirements for the mission. “I am proud of our team’s commitment to innovating with urgency to achieve and exceed expectations for this phase of the program,” said Sarah Hiza, vice president and general manager of Strategic and Missile Defense at Lockheed Martin. “With this additional confidence in our NGI design through a week-long - review with our MDA customer, we are on track to deliver the right solution to FACTURING WEST COAST •

testing of key components. “NGI is the future. It’s next generation, by name and nature! We are designing our interceptor to be able to defend the homeland, if called upon, against the threats of today and those of tomorrow. While no one can predict what may come, we are committed to providing MDA with a mature and reliable solution capable of meeting the mission,” said Reeves. “Lockheed Martin recognizes the importance of The Mentor Protégé Program to promote small businesses and further grow the industrial base,” said Reeves. “Our work with small businesses is infusing niche capabilities and technologies for our NGI.” “Our embrace of digital tools, processes, and technologies, combined with the facilities we’re planning and constructing with the end mission in mind, inform our production plan and will enable us to meet our customers’ production needs both today and well into the future,” Reeves explained. AI-powered capabilities, machine learning, model-based engineering and digital twins are just some of the tools the NGI program is using to drive digital transformation and accelerate 21st Century Security. Corporate investment in facilities is also key to the company’s NGI success. Lockheed Martin will soon open its NGI-exclusive Missile System Integration Lab for development, testing, and system integration

in Huntsville, Alabama later this year. The company is progressing through hardware and software testing, starting with prototype hardware and moving to flight-like engineering units that will be integrated in the MSIL. The NGI team’s digital-from-day-one approach, combined with a design and facility investment with the end mission in mind, enables the team’s continued progress. On NGI, Lockheed Martin is leveraging decades of experience in: Missile intercept technology and defense Space and radiation-hardened systems Space optical payload development Strategic missile systems Lockheed Martin’s NGI will increase warfighter capability, providing an improved defensive solution to address the complex battlespace. From interceptors like NGI to targets, satellites, radars, and sensors, the most effective missile defense architecture is open networked, and scalable. Lockheed Martin built the concept of layered defense from the ground up. Those lessons learned continue to pay forward to today’s solutions. In today’s global threat environment, integrated air and missile defense is an increasingly complex challenge that requires the best engineers, technicians, and more. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Tesla executives were cautious about the global economy—and Mexico investment plans—on the EV giant’s third-quarter earnings call. Jennifer Ramsay Cost-cutting and improving affordability were at the forefront of Tesla Inc. executives mind as the electric-vehicle manufacturer discussed its third-quarter earnings Oct. 18.The Tesla team has reduced the price of its vehicles multiple times this year in an attempt to entice more customers. However, the efforts weren’t enough to meet investors’ expectations as the company posted revenues of more than $23.3 billion and delivered more than 435,000 vehicles during the quarter. But CEO Elon Musk and his team held firm to its guidance of 1.8 million A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

“I just can’t emphasize again how important cost is. It’s not an optional thing for most people; it is a necessary thing. We have to make our cars more affordable,” he said. CFO Vaibhav Taneja said the focus on monthly costs for customers inevitably affected Tesla’s numbers down the income statement.

AB Finishing Tech prides itself on setting the standard for:

Musk: ‘We Have to Make Our Cars More Affordable’

Musk pointed to vehicle cost as the primary driver of lack of sales, saying that what most car buyers were paying attention to is the monthly payment.

“We’ve tried to offset such adjustments via focus on reducing costs,” he said. “However, there is an inherent lag in cost reductions, which in turn impacts margins.” Tesla’s gross profit margin dropped significantly this quarter, 17.9% compared to 25.1% in Q3 2022. The company’s cost per vehicle in Q3 was $37,500 versus $39,400 in the prior-year quarter. The cost has come down, but Musk called his teams’ line-by-line cost reduction method “a grind.”

A Passion for Manufacturing Meet the Modern Makers who are putting their creative powers to work in high-tech careers in advanced manufacturing. “I mean first approximation, if you’ve got a $40,000 car, and roughly 10,000 items in that car, that means each thing, on average, costs $4. So in order to get the cost down, say, by 10%, you have to get $0.40 out of each part on average. It is a game of pennies,” he said. Affordability was also a concern with the Cybertruck, which Tesla workers began producing earlier this year. Deliveries are set to begin on Nov. 30, althoughTesla executives haven’t yet named their price. When the Cybertruck was first announced in 2019, its starting price was $40,000 with deliveries starting in 2021, but due to inflation and interest rates rising, it will likely be higher now.

Musk said it will require “immense work” to not only get the price down, but make the vehicle cash-flow positive; he estimated doing so could take up to 18 months. He later also added that he expects to sell 250,000 Cybertrucks a year by 2025. Interest rates are also a concern in the build out of a planned Mexico gigafactory. Tesla teams are working on infrastructure and factory design but Musk said executives are waiting to go “full tilt” until they have a better sense of the global economy. “Interest rates have to come down,” he said. “If interest rates keep rising, you just fundamentally reduce affordability. It is just the same as increasing the price of the car. So I just don’t have visibility into it. If you can tell me what the interest rates are, I can tell you when we should build the factory.” Tesla reported earnings after the closing bell Oct. 18. The following afternoon, its shares (Ticker: TSLA) were down more than 9% to about $220, which cut the company’s market capitalization to about $700 billion. Over the past six months, the stock is still up about 20%.

Vinfast Lands Deal For $1 Billion Share Sale The agreement allows VinFast to call on the investment manager to buy shares at any point during the next 36 months. The deal comes as the company’s stock has fallen hard from its peak in August after hitting the public markets via a SPAC merger. In a statement, VInFast CFO David Mansfield said, “This new source of equity funding provides us with valuable optionality and access to capital to continue to expand our business on a global scale. While we are under no obligation to draw on the full amount, the transaction aligns with our goals of opportunistic capital raising while adding liquidity to our shares over time. ...We will continue to evaluate other capital markets transactions and sources of fundraising as VinFast continues to grow.” VinFast recently revealed in an earnings report that its parent company, Vingroup, and its c hair man, billionaire Pham Nhat

Vuong, are pouring in hundreds of millions of dollars to support the company as its losses continue to mount. In April, VinFast entered into a funding agreement that allows it to receive billions in grants and loans from Vuong and Vingroup. VinFast officially broke ground on its Chatham plant in July. The company has said the factory could eventually employ 7,500 workers. Early this year, it pushed back the plant’s opening date from 2024 to 2025. Regarding the latest funding deal, Mark Angelo, founder and president ofYorkville, said, “We are excited for this opportunity to be a part of VinFast’s growth and development, and we look forward to seeing VinFast’s continued success in the EV market. We couldn’t be prouder of our partnership with VinFast in its mission for a greener future.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

What would you do if you found a heat treat company that was renowned for quick turn, often completing projects in 1-2 days? Just think about the impact this could have on your ‘on time’ delivery metrics? And what if, in addition to quick turn, this company also had these attributes: • >60 years in business • NADCAP Accredited for heat treat and passivate • A general manager who is not only a Journeyman machinist, but also a degreed manufacturing engineer with 4 decades of experience in manufacturing, including quality inspection • Highly tenured employees, with an average of 9 years with ABS, including multiple employees with 23+ years at the company • Open 24 hours per day, operating 3 shifts Monday through Saturday • Personalized service, with a real live person answering the phone during business hours • Free local pick-up and delivery ABS Metallurgical Processors, with the abbreviation ‘ABS’ standing for ‘Always Better Service’, prides itself on supporting its 350+ customers with superior special processing, including: 1) 2) 3) 4)

are the only Boeing approved heat treater in Arizona.

In addition, they are on the ‘Approved Supplier List’ for every major aerospace company in Arizona, Bob Knisely, General Manager for ABS since June of 2020, says. He adds, “We are DCMA Self-Release for a number of companies, which means that our processes and procedures have been audited by the Defense Contract Management Agency. DCMA self-release indicates that the government trusts the quality of our work and procedures which does not require any additional “oversight” on individual orders, thus eliminating extended days of waiting for source inspection.” Knisely adds, “When I came onboard with ABS, I learned that many local (Arizona) shops were sending their parts to California and Texas for heat treat and other processes. We have brought these companies back to Arizona to ABS because we can offer our processes done quickly (typically in 1-2 days), we are NADCAP accredited, and our customers find our pricing to be extremely competitive.” He adds that while most of ABS’ customers hail from Arizona, they also ship parts across the west coast and Midwest. In a transformative stride forward, ABS employees; have undergone comprehensive cross training, marking a strategic game changing move for the company. Bob emphasized that this crosstraining initiative holds dual benefits: not only does it enrich the work experience of the teams, but it also serves as a buffer against any disruptions caused by the absence of a team member. He further elaborated,”our esteemed employees are of utmost importance to us. It fills me with pride that our clients and suppliers, upon visiting our establishment, consistently applaud the courteous and adept demeanor of our team. The dedication of our workforce significantly contributes to the smooth functioning of my role.” This progressive approach underscores ABS’s commitment to maintaining operational excellence. Bob joined ABS 3 years ago because he valued the ownership’s willingness to invest into the business. “We listen to our customers, and when we heard that they were having trouble getting larger parts heat treated, we purchased a high capacity 6’ gas tempering and aging oven which empowers us to undertake the heat treatment of 6’ bars with unparalleled efficiency,

Processing Of 6-FOOT SS Bar all while accommodating an impressive weight of up to 5,000 lbs. He adds, “On a separate note, using 6’ bars is superior to the 3’ ones due to the reduction in remnants. This means our customers can yield more parts per bar, making it a better, more cost effective choice.” In addition to the new larger capacity oven for heat treating, the company just recently renovated its passivate room. While under new management since 2020, the company has added capacity and equipment, ABS has substantial room to continue to expand over time, with the current building sitting on one of the two lots owned by the company. Bob says, “Our potential for capacity expansion is substantial, as we possess the necessary land to potentially double our current output.” Currently, our company is equipped to efficiently process part quantities ranging from as little as one (inclusive of tooling) to thousands.” The company values its employees, so many who have long term tenure with ABS, and welcomes new hires who share their values, particularly if willing to work 3rd shift. Bob says, “Great service begins and ends with experienced and friendly professionals, which is why we put so much consideration into selecting only the best to join our team. We complete projects efficiently and on schedule and go above and beyond to form lasting relationships with our clients.”

Hear From A Few Of ABS’ Customers “I have only worked with ABS Metallurgical Processors for the past 23 years, but my company has been using them for the past 35 years. They are a distance from us, as we are in Minnesota and they are in Arizona. We first found them when we were doing work for Honeywell, and ABS was an approved supplier for heat treat. Over the years, I have worked with many different team members at ABS. In all these years, I have always found the customer service to be outstanding. The team is professional and extremely courteous. Their pricing, their service, and the quality of the work they do is outstanding. We wouldn’t be using them for all these years if it wasn’t. When I need expedites, I call Bob and ask him to ‘work his magic’. Hands down I recommend ABS becasue they do such an excellent job.” - Cheryl, Purchasing, Precision Machine Shop, Minnesota “Our company has been using ABS for more than 30 yeas now. They are an excellent company to work with.Their pricing is competitve, their quality is very good, and the biggest differentiator they have over their competitors is their quick turn. Often I get my parts within 24 hours, but almost always get them in 1-2 days. With others in the valley, it takes a week or longer. It’s nice to work with a team that values quick turns often needed in our business. ABS is just a really good company to work with.” - Mike, Purchasing, Precision Machine Shop, Arizona “I utilized ABS for heat-treating for many years and the quick response and short lead times made it an easy choice for our company. Sometimes I could drop off a pallet of parts for heat-treating on the way home at 3pm and pick them up in 2 days on my way back to work. The pricing is great and the guys that work there are so friendly and helpful. In aerospace it’s also about the paperwork, and these guys get it. ABS is approved for many primes and they are NADCAP accredited; this is key to being a valuable partner. The approvals are there and the certifications and paperwork are what we need to run our business. It’s really good to have a dependable processing partner right down the road. I highly recommend you work with Bob and his team at ABS Metallurgical. They are fun to work with and very professional.” - FormerVP Precision Machine Shop, Arizona

Arcimoto Got A Quorum The Arcimoto Modular UtilityVehicle, or MUV, is one of the core products that CEO Chris Dawson is hoping can revive the company’s fortunes. Arcimoto shareholders apparently paved the way for the cash-starved Eugene EV maker to bring in around $2.1 million. Whether the company has pocketed the money, which could be desperately needed, was unclear, however. A week after falling short of a quorum, enough voting power showed up in person or by proxy last Friday to overwhelmingly approve a stock issuance needed to complete a two-tranche private placement that dates back to August, according to an Arcimoto securities filing. The first tranche closed in August, yielding Arcimoto (Nasdaq: FUV) around $4.3 million. Last week’s approval seemingly allowed the company to bring in secondtranche proceeds of $2.1 million. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

22 • OCT - NOV ’23

But since the filing didn’t explicitly say that, the Business Journal asked Arcimoto to confirm if it had indeed closed on the $2.1 million. When it announced the $6.7-plus million private placement, Arcimoto called the funds key to its future. “This is the next step in the master plan to get Arcimoto back on track bringing paradigm-shifting products to market,” CEO Chris Dawson said then. “These funds will further enable scale production and provide investment in Arcimoto-owned dealers in our hottest markets. We have seen incredible progress in our cost down efforts, accelerating our path to profitability.” Arcimoto was down to $1.4 million in cash on hand as of the end of June, even after raising $2.5 million just a few weeks earlier. It had sales of about $1.8 million in the quarter ended June 30 and a loss of $13.2 million. The company has recently declined to comment on its cash position or production levels. Clearly, though, raising money is difficult with the stock trading around 70 cents, down about 80% in 2023, 96% in the past 12 months, and 99.9% since hitting an all-time high on Feb. 4, 2021. The company had a market capitalization then of $1.25 billion. Now it’s about $6 million. By Pete Danko – Staff Reporter, Portland Business Journal

Cutting Tool Market Remains Positive U.S. cutting tool consumption totaled $219.2 million, according to the U.S. Cutting Tool Institute (USCTI) and AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the CuttingTool Market Report collaboration, was up 16.2% from July’s $188.6 million and up 4% when compared with the $210.9 million reported for August 2022.With a year-to-date total of $1.65 billion, 2023 is up 8.6% when compared to the same time period in 2022. These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals reported by the companies participating in the CTMR program. The totals here represent the majority of the U.S. market for cutting tools. “The industry has seen some softening in recent months, but the overall cutting tool market remains positive,” commented Jeff Major, president of USCTI. “Several market segments are leading the continued demand for tooling. It will be interesting to see how the automotive labor issues affect the market in the coming months.”

Costikyan Jarvis, president of Jarvis Cutting Tools, conveyed a similar thought: “The August cutting tool report shows the continued strength of the manufacturing sector. Obviously, there are some concerns, both immediate and medium term. On the immediate side, the UAW strike creates uncertainty around automotive production. On the medium-term side, where and how the higher interest rates affect production remain to be seen, and, globally, we now have two major armed conflicts. Even with these concerns, there is promise for continued improvement. There is considerable investment in

It provides a monthly statement on U.S. manufacturers’ consumption of the primary consumable in the manufacturing process – the cutting tool. Analysis of cutting tool consumption is a leading indicator of both upturns and downturns in U.S. manufacturing activity, as it is a true measure of actual production levels. Historical data for the Cutting Tool Market Report is available dating back to January 2012. This collaboration of AMT and USCTI is the first step in the two associations working together to promote and support U.S.-based manufacturers of cutting tool technology. GE Aerospace Researchers to Build and Demonstrate Small Prototype Engine with Fuel Cells and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to Help Advance More Sustainable Flight Awarded $4.5 million in Phase 2 funding through ARPA-E’s REEACH program to build and demonstrate a small scale 25kW power generation subsystem that combines solid oxide fuel cells and gas turbine engine using SAF GE’s FLyCLEEN (FueL CelL Embedded ENgine) project part of a larger effort with ARPA-E to advance the fundamental building blocks of commercial passenger hybrid electric flight A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

GE Aerospace researchers also working on other ARPA-E programs to scale the electric powertrain and cabling required for hybrid electric propulsion Following the successful completion of the design phase of its FLyCLEEN project, ARPA-E has awarded GE Aerospace Research $4.5 million in Phase 2 funding to take the next step of building and demonstrating a 25kW power generation subsystem integrating solid oxide fuel cells with a SAF-powered gas turbine for hybrid electric propulsion. The use of fuel cells could vastly improve the efficiency of converting the chemical energy from SAF into electric power and move closer to net zero CO2 emissions. John Hong, a GE Aerospace senior combustion research engineer and FLyCLEEN project leader, says the team is bringing to bear nearly two decades of experience in solid oxide fuel cell technology to support the development and demonstration of a high efficiency power generation system with lower carbon emissions, stating, “The integration of fuel cells into jet engine propulsion system represents a potentially promising hybrid technology for additional fuel efficiency technologies in higher thrust aircraft applications,” Hong remarked. “The use of SAF demonstrates the compatibility with lower carbon fuels to capture further CO2 reduction benefits.” Hong explained that this hybrid approach uses SAF in both the fuel cells and gas turbines. A portion of SAF is reformed to Syngas to feed the fuel cells, while the rest of SAF is consumed in gas turbine engine. This is a novel concept to combine the two. For more details, watch this video with John explaining how the FLyCLEEN system works. Hong added, “This is such an exciting time for the aerospace industry. From fuel cells and SAF to advances in electric power, hydrogen, and even new engine architectures like our open fan design, we are seeing a confluence of technologies driving progress on a number of fronts. And we will need every bit of new investments and public partnerships like we have with ARPA-E to meet the industry’s goal of net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.” GE Aerospace Research’s ongoing programs in hybrid electric propulsion with ARPA-E are a great complement to the CFM RISE

The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon An Industrial Diamond

populated CNC machining environment is a must. Since 2020 Bruce and his team have been supplying 3nine mist collection technology to northwest machine shops.

By Stephen Hannemann

As a manufacturer’s rep and a writer, I’m always excited to visit the companies with whom I have relationships. And, once or twice a year I just can’t help myself, I just must shout out a great supplier. In this instance it is one of our A2Z Manufacturing magazine advertisers. When you are in the machining industry, your best ally is your tooling supplier. If they’re not already in your buyer’s database, Cutting Tool Control needs to be in it – and utilized. Cutting Tool Control has everything you need to run your entire operation. Everything! The latest in cutting technology and custom tool grinding, every conceivable configuration for work holding, 5-axis technology, the best cutting fluid and lubricant technology money can buy, water-based degreasing and cleaning solutions, fire suppression systems, and the list goes on. If Cutting Tool Control doesn’t have what you need, it probably hasn’t been invented yet! History – 1979: Bruce Lowry founded Cutting Tool Control in Woodinville, WA at the age of 24. He won over his first customer, Western Gear, in Everett, WA with a business card that stated, “President for a Lifetime,” and it still does to this day. • • • • • • •

BLUE LINE

NEW COLOR, NEW FILTER MONITORING SYSTEM SAME GREAT EFFICIENCY!

1982: Moved to Ballard,WA and hired his first two employees; Brian Tengs is still with him today. 1987: Acquired the Blaser Swisslube coolant line and growth took off! 1990: Bruce opened warehouses in the Portland, OR area and British Colombia, Canada. 1995: Began installing fire suppression systems in CNC machines. 2011: Purchased their first CNC tool and cutter grinder to manufacture, modify and maintain round tools. 2013:Acquired UltraTool International and standard and special tools sales exploded. 2020: Introduced the 3nine mist separators to the Pacific Northwest. Truly new and amazing technology! These days we hear a great deal about clean air. Clean air in a densely A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Developed in Sweden, 3nine improved upon a 100-year-old disc stack system from the dairy industry, modifying the concept to extract and recover 100% of your expensive cutting fluid from the mist created in your CNC mill or lathe cabin. The reclaimed fluid is returned to your coolant reservoir for reuse. After the cabin air is cleaned down to 1 micron, the remaining air is pushed up and out through hospital grade H13 HEPA filters where it is cleaned to 99.95% or better. Often better than the outside air we breathe. Filter maintenance is all but eliminated by 3nine’s automatic Clean In Place (CIP) system. The system utilizes a 4 second blast of clean fluid from the sump approximately every 10 minutes. As a result, your maintenance is minimal and your efficiency in air purification is consistently high! 2023: Cutting Tool Control consistently delivers solid solutions for CNC shops in Washington, Oregon, northern Idaho, Alaska, and British Columbia. They also sell throughout the United States to solve manufacturing problems. Finally, a personal quote from founder Bruce Lowry: “I say put us at the end of your list to call when others can not deliver a quality solution.” And there you have it, Cutting Tool Control – An Industrial Diamond!
