A social media campaign launched by the chamber included photos highlighting the benefits of living, visiting, and working in the village. “The history is remarkable, as is the beauty of Wickford,” says Urbach. “The residents and businesses all take great pride in maintaining and preserving their prop erties. It’s evident when you stroll through the village. HistWick created a historic walk with markers where you can learn the history of the homes here.”

The historic North Kingstown village earned a national spotlight for its thriving community and pristine preservation

Earlier this year, just how beloved Wick ford is was proved on a national scale when it earned the top spot of USA Today ’s annu al survey, “10 Best Historic Small Towns in America,” ahead of the likes of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; Abilene, Kansas; Taos, New Mexico; and more.

Cheerful flags encourage visitors to partake of village commerce

“North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce, the Wickford Merchant Association, the Town Council, and HistWick (the Wickford histor ical association), all played a role,” says Kris tin Urbach, executive director of the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce. “When we heard Wickford was in the top 10, the Town Council President encouraged sup porters to vote. It was a collaboration of all these associations in town and various groups that promoted voting.”

It’s a special honor for the historic village within the town of North Kingstown. The ranking was no surprise, however, to boost ers and residents of the seaside community, who came together to support the designation in a joint effort of local businesses and civic groups helping to make Wickford number one.

“During COVID, because it wasn’t inside a shopping mall, many businesses said they had their best year ever,” says Hackett. “Wickford is hopping!”

No doubt, there’s a “team approach” to Wickford’s success. “The businesses come together for celebrations during the holiday season, the Merchant’s Association has Daf fodil Days, the chamber hosts the annual tree lighting,” Urbach continues. “You real ly have a strong community working togeth er, the businesses and the residents, and that really make an impact.” For more ways to ex perience Wickford, visit WickfordVillage.org or HistWick.org

The North Kingstown Chamber of Com merce boasts a 93-year track record of up lifting the community, so naturally, “we were really thrilled to see the town receive that rec ognition,” Urbach says of USA Today ’s rank ing. “We provide the official visitor’s center for North Kingstown, we greet dozens of vis itors per day in the summer, and many come here specifically asking where Wickford is.”

Today’s Wickford sees unique events that draw huge crowds throughout the year. The summer season includes Harbor Lights, an outdoor celebration with food trucks, face painting, balloon art, horse-drawn carriage rides, live music, and more – with one more occurrence this year on September 8 closing out the summer season. And New Englanders flock to the Wickford Art Festival, one of the largest outdoor art festivals in the country, which can now host more exhibitors, patrons, and vendors than ever since moving to Wil son Park. The Merchant’s Association also sponsors Wicked Week, a Halloween celebra tion featuring the popular Horrible’s Parade with dozens of witches singing and dancing in the streets.

“HistWick is a neighborhood organization that started in the ‘90s and their goal was to preserve and protect the historic houses,” ex plains Mary Ann Hackett, president of the association.

BEWITCHING FUN Autumn in the village wouldn’t be complete without appearances from the Witches of Wickford. A model of New England charm, Wickford was the inspiration for John Updike’s novel, The Witches of Eastwick , and more recently it’s the home of a dance troupe of creative ladies strutting their stuff in colorful, spooky garb. With “lead witch” Nancy Rafi at the helm, Witches of Wickford (with numbers exceeding 100) perform their dance throughout the season, and have since grown new chapters across the state. Here’s a handful of opportunities to catch their enchanting routine, and visit online for more.

The current fight for the state’s top job has so far featured few of the issue-oriented campaign events typical of years past. It’s not really clear if that’s due to COVID fatigue or other reasons.

Buonanno Foulkes called on McKee in May to do more to expand abortion coverage. She also went on the air immediately after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade to propose a regional coalition of states in strong support of abortion rights, McKee’s campaign called Gorbea’s criticism an attempt to grab headlines. An executive order signed by McKee earlier this month would shield women who seek reproductive health services here from legal liability in other states. But the coverage gap cited by Buonanno, Foulkes, and Gorbea has persisted despite the

But now, with the mercury zipping past 90 and Rhode Islanders flocking to beaches, the candidates are cranking up their efforts.

W Gorbea, McKee, and Buonanno Foulkes

Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea, one of five major Democratic candidates, staged a news conference outside the Statehouse [in July] to call on Gov. Dan McKee to do more to extend abortion coverage for women on Medicaid or who have the state employee insurance plan. Without specifying particular actions, Gorbea called for McKee to be more forceful on the issue.

Democrats running for RI governor start turning up the heat ith Rhode Island edging into what is expected to be the first heat wave of summer –and with just weeks until the September 13 primary election – the Democratic candidates for governor are turning on the jets.

A recent Boston Globe poll suggested a tight race in the Democratic primary for governor between McKee, Gorbea, and former CVS Health executive Helena Buonanno Foulkes.

By Ian Donnis

“I’m calling on all of my colleagues that are running for governor to stand firmly and to put pressure on the governor to exercise leadership and make sure that women in Rhode Island are able to exercise their right to choose whether or not to have an abortion and not be limited by financial reasons,” Gorbea said in an interview.

In another sign of a new stage in the race, McKee’s campaign unveiled its first TV commercial. McKee’s 90-something mother, Willa, wearing oversized sunglasses, gets a co-starring role while helping to burnish his record on issues like the accelerated phase out of the car tax (a move led by the legislature), new investment in affordable housing and the passage of laws imposing new restrictions on guns.

Two other Democrats, Matt Brown and Luis Daniel Munoz, are among the other candidates running for governor, and they’ve registered in the single digits in polls. There is also an Independent candidate, Zachary Hurwitz, who qualified for the ballot, according to the secretary of state’s office. The winner of the Democratic primary is expected to square off against Republican businesswoman Ashley Kalus in the November general election. Ian Donnis can be reached at idonnis@ripr.org

Legislative leaders have signaled the issue may get more attention when the next General Assembly session starts in January. (Rhode Island adopted a law in 2019 to ensure abortion rights.)

“Not bad for a year and a half,” McKee quipped. To which Willa retorted, “Not bad for a governor that lives with his mother!” Gorbea and Buonanno Foulkes have already been advertising for weeks. Gorbea touts her record in the secretary of state’s office, while Buonanno Foulkes points to her management experience with a corporation, CVS Health, with a much bigger budget and many more employees than the state of Rhode Island.

Bridging Gaps in History

The exhibits are connected not only the matically, but also in their attempts to an swer questions the museum has always asked: “‘What does it mean to be a worker?’ ‘What does it mean to be a laborer?’ and ‘What does it mean to build community and to maintain community?’” explains Krieger.

Two exhibits exploring the history of Latino settlement in Rhode Island are on view at the Museum of Work and Culture through September 24 CultureandWorkofMuseumofcourtesyhotoP

Oral histories of local Latino communities add depth to a poster exhibit on view in Woonsocket

“I feel one of my biggest roles is not just to serve, but to bridge,” Gonzalez says, “to be a bridge between those who have not been able to connect to the community as they would have liked to and I think that this exhibition is a great effort towards that.” RIHS.org

The Museum of Work and Culture, which is part of the Rhode Island Historical Society, tra ditionally focuses on the history of French Ca nadians in Woonsocket. However, exhibit and program coordinator Deborah Krieger says she hopes the current displays will help to shine a light on the history and lived experiences of Lati no communities in and around Woonsocket. “Bittersweet Harvest” details the Bracero program that began in the 1940s, in which the United States and Mexican governments came to an agreement to bring Mexican workers into the United States to fulfill wartime labor short ages. These were largely agricultural jobs in states like California and Texas, though a small number of braceros came to Rhode Island to work on the New Haven rail line.

Krieger also credits Woonsocket City Coun cilor and pastor Valerie Gonzalez for her role in engaging the community in the exhibition. Gon zalez is most excited about hosting the first-ever Spanish-language tour of the Museum of Work and Culture on September 3, highlighting not only the bracero exhibit, but the museum at large.

F

It’s thanks to research published by Mar ta Martinez, executive director at RI Latino Arts, that we now know there were braceros in Rhode Island. Martinez plays an instrumental role in the ongoing work of compiling and pre serving oral histories within the Latino com munity. “The push-pull of immigration is an important story that cannot be overlooked,” she explains. “Today, Latin Americans and Central Americans continue to make Rhode Island their home, and to contribute to the economic growth of the state.”

Using oral histories from their Nuestras Raíces project, RI Latino Arts’ “This Kind of Love, Our Love” then continues the story, filling in the more recent and local history with a collection of historic artifacts and an art installation sup plementing the informational posters of “Bitter sweet Harvest.”

Whether you’re craving a boost after a brisk jog on Blackstone Boulevard or indulging after yoga at India Point Park, this Wayland Square cafe has become the spot to recharge with healthy bowls and smoothies galore.

“Our mission is to make you feel good about treating yourself,” says lead manager Josh D’Abate. “When you walk through the doors of Wayland Fresh, you know you’re nourishing your body with fresh locally sourced ingredients.”

Fall flavors make their way onto the menu at Wayland Square’s go-to health cafe Must-Try Items

THE SOUTHWEST SALAD ( $11 ) : Romaine, farro grains, avocados, corn, black beans, roasted red peppers, and tortilla strips, served with agave jalapeño vinaigrette dressing

Visiting on a warm morning, we opt for breakfast on the patio to take in the bustling street sights while tucking into a combo of sweet and savory options.

First up is a personal favorite, the Love Potion smoothie – a creamy blend of strawberries and bananas, peanut butter, vanilla protein, and sprinkled with chocolate chips. My friend sips a Peanut Butter Protein smoothie at D’Abate’s recommendation. It has the same perfect consistency as all Wayland smoothies, with

Amid the welcoming atmosphere of woven basket lights and an earth-toned build out, a long counter with dozens of ingredients behind glass completes the organic theme. This delightful assortment of colors piques my interest when a friend and I visit – deep rouged raspberries, bright red bell peppers, golden diced mangos, and soft green avocados are just a few of the eye-catching ingredients that make up all variety of protein-packed breakfast wraps, seasonal salads, and fruit smoothie bowls.

D’Abate gives us the run-down of Wayland Fresh offerings, which aren’t limited to post-workout and small bites, with hearty Thanksgiving Wraps on the menu and enough add-ons to turn a salad into a dinner.

“People have been asking for it since August,” D’Abate says with a laugh. Salads and bowls focusing on autumn harvests are also hitting the menu soon to keep the bright, energizing eats coming even as chillier days approach.

Though the fall menu wasn’t quite rolled out when we visited, the lure of a Pumpkin Spice Smoothie is worthy of a return trip.

The real star of the menu at Wayland Fresh is their frozen bowls. Starting with either acai or pitaya – both vitamin- and nutrient-rich bases – you can get creative crafting the ultimate blend of fruit, granola, and maybe a drizzle of honey. We decided to leave it to the experts and ordered the Triple B, an acai base featuring fresh, supple raspberries and blueberries, finished with granola, coconut, and a generous scoop of peanut butter. Trust me, you’ll feel like you’re eating dessert.

1. Open the canned clams and drain and reserve their liquid in a separate container.

5. Pour in the clam juice (the reserved canned juice and jars of juice should amount to 4-5 cups), and mix in the pumpkin puree. Bring the mixture to a light boil before adding the chopped potatoes and pumpkin or squash to the pot, along with the bay leaf. Cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes and pumpkin are just fork tender.

Jim Murphy shown collecting a honey comb. Murphy cares for four hives containing up to 60,000 honey bees in a garden on the Providence campus

Whitney McGinnes, an amateur beekeeper on Block Island since middle school, has long suffered from seasonal allergies. When

“Honey bees pollinate 80 percent of all pollinated food,” says Murphy. “Or, to put it another way, one out of every three bites of food you take has been pollinated by a honey bee.” Honey contains mostly sugar, as well as a mix of amino acids, vitamins, minerals, iron, zinc, and antioxidants. While its potential in recipes seems endless, the uses for honey in other applications is even moreso. Honey has been around for more than 8,000 years, and can be used to treat a variety of ailments, from cardiovascular disease to pollen allergies.

The buzz on local honey – where to find it, what to do with it, and why bees are so important to almost everything we eat

By Ann Martini t’s a sunny Saturday morning and the Coastal Growers Market held at Casey Farm in Saunderstown is a treat for the senses. The aromas of manure and farm animals permeate the air. A red-faced eightyear-old with a fistful of wildflowers props himself on an old stone wall and lifts his head to catch a tiny ocean breeze wafting from the east. Canvas pop-up tents form a perimeter ripe with shopping opportunities: a redhaired teenager examines the ingredients on a bottle of lotion from Herbalicious Skincare; a coastal grandmother chooses flowers from Robin Hollow Farm; a man in a Yankees shirt tells another in a Red Sox hat that Pat’s Pastured eggs have “the most amazing yelloworange yolks you’ve eva, eva seen!” A stone’s throw away, the Casey Farm tent offers its own amazing yellow-orange-hued product: heavy jars of thick, golden honey, straight from its own apiary. This 300 acres of land has been farmed since the mid 1700s, and you can bet that honey bees have played a role in shoring up Casey Farm all along, making it a prolific source for fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, eggs, maple syrup, and more. But it’s the honey that might be its most precious crop, because the process involved in making it sustains everything that lives and grows here. Then, of course, there’s the sublime taste of it. Whether a sweetener for tea or cocktails or a condiment for ricotta toast and chicken and waffles, honey has never been more popular, thanks in part to the sustainable food movement and consumers who love it. Chefs and baristas love it, too, and local establishments from Main Street Coffee in East Greenwich to The Salted Slate in Providence maintain their own hives and use the honey in their recipes. Over the course of a couple of hours here at Casey Farm, at least a dozen pounds will be taken home, according to farm manager Lindie Markovich, who has overseen this coastal ecosystem for nearly a decade. To simplify things: “Honey is essentially bee vomit,” says Jim Murphy, resident beekeeper and director of sustainability at Rhode Island College (RIC). Murphy cares for four hives containing up to 60,000 honey bees in a garden on the Providence campus. Here, the bees collect nectar from vegetables such as cucumbers and tomatoes and herbs such as mint and basil, as well as the clover that grows on acres of grass on the RIC campus. They store the nectar in a sort of auxiliary stomach and then regurgitate it into the hive, using it for their own nutrition. To collect honey, he explains, some of the honey is extracted from the comb using a spinner and then filtered into jars.

H ey R hody FALL SEPTEMBER 2022 | HeyRhody.com 33 her father decided to start keeping bees on their property, she grew aware of the calming effect honey can have on allergies and began taking it to alleviate her symptoms. She now assists beekeeper Tracy Finn, an islander who manages about 20 hives. Together, they maintain an observation hive, where K-8 educators can bring students to learn more about the many benefits of beekeeping and honey. Just being around the hives, McGinnes began to notice, helped alleviate her allergies. “Beekeeping is like therapy for me,” sheItexplains.wasanother young beekeeper who introduced local honey to her employers at Main Street Coffee in East Greenwich. Lexi Cole and her dad also began raising bees on their property in Coventry when she was in middle school. She is pleasantly addicted to the process of beekeeping. There are about 320 different varieties of honey, and as Cole explains, they vary in color, odor, and flavor, depending on what the honey bees are pollinating and when. Cole says that like wine, a very sophisticated palate might detect the presence of blueberries or asparagus in spring, strawberries and tomatoes in summer, squash and apples in the fall, in addition to whatever flowers are in bloom. The color is typically darker in the fall for example, according to Cole’s experience with her own honey.

HONEY LOCAL September is National Honey Month to coincide with collection season, which typically finishes this month as bees get ready to secure their hives for winter. Lucky for us, bees make more honey than their colony needs. Most markets sell regional honey, but here are a handful of statewide smaller shops and farms for sourcing the sweet stuff:

So what’s the buzz about bees being endangered? While it’s true that some bee populations are on the decline due to pesticides, disease, habitat loss, and climate change, there are, according to Scientific American magazine, more honey bees on Earth now than ever before. But in the business of conventional beekeeping – evergrowing to meet increasing demand for honey – honey bees are specifically bred to increase productivity. This selective breeding can narrow the gene pool and lead to large-scale die-offs. As Jeff Mello, the beekeeper at Aquidneck Honey in Tiverton says, “No bees, no food.” It’s what compels Mello, nicknamed “Jeff the Bee Man,” to take to bee rescue. Mello started small-scale beekeeping 30 years ago and now maintains organic, chemical-free apiaries in four states that produce some of the most superior organic honey you can buy. Still, he’ll find out about a hive located in an inconvenient space – say, way up on a telephone pole on a main road in Middletown – and he’ll go to the rescue before the hive can be removed by a guy with a spray tank of pesticides. “We’ll shut down traffic and get up there in a bucket truck,” he says, explaining how he will remove the hive and relocate as many bees as he can. “I really love it,” relays Mello of both rescue and maintaining hives. Even though Mello is among the 1 percent of the population that has an allergic reaction to bee stings, he’ll never stop beekeeping. “It’s just the most amazing thing.”

Megan Eddy, a manager and bartender at Main Street Coffee, quickly found uses for Cole’s honey. It’s in recipes such as an addictive honey-walnut-cinnamon cream cheese, as well as cocktails. The Bee’s Knees combines gin, fresh lemon juice, and honey shaken over ice and served neat. The Strawberry Stinger starts by muddling two strawberries with two lemon wedges, then adding vodka, bitters, honey, and a splash of ginger beer shaken and served over ice. The honey imparts a subtle sweetness, says Eddy, and creates a balance among the ingredients.

HALLOWEEN COSTUMES: CUTE OR SCARY?

FAVORITE PLACE TO PICK PUMPKINS: I really love heading to Barden Family Orchard for the first pumpkin picking of the season. [My son] Harry loves to find the absolute biggest pumpkin we can carry and it ends up riding in the back of our old red truck all autumn long.

CIDER DONUTS OR APPLE PIE: As much as I love cider donuts, one of my favorite fall traditions is coming home from the orchard after a day of apple picking and digging into one of [my wife] Sarah’s famous apple pies. The whole house smells amazing for days and Harry loves helping (and taste tasting) every step of the way.

FAVORITE SCENIC DRIVE: My favorite fall drives are usually the ones with no particular destination in mind, but every year I drive from my house to Pomfret [Connecticut] with a quick stop at Brown & Hopkins Country Store in Chepachet. Those old dirt roads light up with the resplendent reds and golden orange hues you long for in a New England autumn.

Seasonal faves from the entrepreneur behind Kiel James Patrick who has turned reveling over autumn into an art form BY ELYSE MAJOR

See for yourself just how much Kiel, wife Sarah, son Harry, and dogs Bennie and Maple enjoy fall on Instagram: @kjp; @sarahkjp; andDon’t@bennieandmaplemissavisittothe

BEST PLACES FOR MUMS: Dame Orchard – their mums never disappoint when you’re looking for a full bloom of fall colors.

Both! Harry was obsessed with Ghostbusters last Halloween and it was ridiculously cute, but I think he really got into the whole scary/spooky element.

FAVORITE PIECE OF COZY CLOTHING: I love my sweaters but throwing on the first flannel of the year is the quintessential “fall has arrived” moment for me.

FRIENDSGIVING OR THANKSGIVING: I’m lucky to have my entire family really close to us. So, especially in the fall, we get together almost every weekend for a big family Sunday dinner that feels a lot like a traditional Thanksgiving. Since I’m spoiled with that, I’m gonna go with Friendsgiving. We usually get one or two trips up to Vermont each autumn with a group of friends and do a big outdoor dinner where everyone makes a course for everyone to share.

WHEN DO YOU START DECORATING FOR FALL? As soon as Sarah lets me! But seriously, Halloween is Harry’s favorite time of year and when we were in the attic just after the Fourth of July, we stumbled upon a bin of decorations. We may or may not have decorated most of his room for Halloween that day. ARE YOU TEAM DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS? I love the extra hour of sleep, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a long winter and I’m not wishing the sun goes down any sooner. I will say though, when it gets darker a little earlier and the fog rolls in, it’s pretty darn spooky around our house and I love that.

BIKE OR CANOE: I bring our canoe with us pretty much everywhere we go. It’s the best way to see the foliage from the water and there’s just something calming about an early morning autumn paddle. Plus the Goldens [Retrievers] get to come on every adventure with us that way.

BEST PLACE TO GO CAMPING: The backyard! We pretty much always have a tent set up in the woods behind our house. It’s a great excuse to go roast some marshmallows and sleep under the stars on a random Wednesday night.

FAVORITE FALL BEVERAGE: You’re really going to make me choose, huh? It would have to be between a pumpkin spiced latte and a good cup of apple cider. I’m gonna go with apple cider, and for me, you can’t beat Jaswell’s.

60 ver find yourself on a drive, spot a big ol’ farmhouse, and wonder what it would be like to make it your own? This was the case for a pair of empty-nesters who were aware of a vacant property not far from where they lived in the Rumford section of East Provi dence. Off a main street, close to a reservoir sat a charming white farmhouse built in 1860. The cou ple, who’d been searching for a historic renovation project, saw possibilities in the 1,200-square-foot dwelling and had the vision to make it into their “forever farmhouse.”

“The challenge with a historic renovation project often lies in the retention, rehabilitation, and/or replication of original details and materials,” says Nick Vanasse, chief operating officer of SR Fine Home Builders. “Not only did we need to ensure the new addition matched the existing structure in detail, but since the house sat vacant for several years, it needed a lot of time and attention to be sure Farm Fresh Arts and Crafts meets Farmhouse Style in a Rumford renovation/addition

The builders refer to the project as the Arts and Crafts Farmhouse, which is fit ting since the home boasts details from both movements. Structural elements like the staircase with oak cross buck railings emphasize craftsmanship and beauty in utility, a hallmark of the Arts and Crafts movement, while shiplap (once simply used for sheathing) and architectural de tails like a porch and fireplace check the farmhouse boxes. Interior design choices echo these themes, like the trestle-style dining table by Lorimer Studios of Wick ford, or bare windows that show their muntins. Of course, being nestled among tall trees, a rolling lawn, and surrounding stone walls gives a pastoral vibe that simply can’t be replicated.

A round mirror and patterned textiles soften the hard lines of the shiplap and marble

HOME & STYLE

The renovation and addition that fol lowed more than doubled the home’s square footage to 2,750 and resulted in space for a living room, an additional bedroom, a screen porch, and a finished basement that houses a home gym. “The homeowners wanted a family gathering space in their new home, designed around the fireplace – as would be seen in a tra ditional farmhouse – so we crafted the space with shiplap and a custom mantle featuring a Carrara marble fireplace sur round,” says Vanasse.

Historical Society executive director Mar jory O’Toole hopes guests will appreciate the details that make these properties so special: a panoramic view of Warren’s Point from the cupola at Kempton House, an old wind mill framing structure visible inside the Mill House, and the cryptic marks scratched into wood surrounding the fireplace at Sea Bourne Mary, intended to prevent a witch from en tering via the chimney. Visitors can also en joy the Historical Society’s two long-term exhibitions, “Everyone Was a Farmer,” which explores agricultural history in the area, and “Terra Nova, Vita Nova,” covering the Portu guese community in Little Compton. Augmenting the tour is the release of a new book by the Historical Society, The Sto ries Houses Tell: A Second Collection of Little Compton House Histories . The book is the re sult of intensive research undertaken by vol unteers and staff into the Historical Society’s properties, yielding previously overlooked stories and intriguing historical tidbits about the inhabitants and worshipers. Record Review: Ghost Town

H ey R hody FALL SEPTEMBER 2022 | HeyRhody.com78 ART & CULTURE

As with most projects made during the past two years, the creation of Ghost Town relied on new processes. It was recorded over most of 2021 and the full band had very few chanc es to write and record together. “I headed up sound engineering for the first time,” explains vocalist Caldarone. “Sessions were done with only one or two members at a time. Beyond the technical aspect of tracking, by far my fa vorite part of the process was working with everyone individually on developing parts. I loved sending progress tracks to everyone so the band members could hear songs being re vealed session by session.”

T

You don’t need to love Americana or folk music to enjoy the latest by High Planes

High Planes started as a collaboration be tween Christian Caldarone and Annie Jaeh nig that formed around songs written on the acoustic guitar. Their first album Mayday was recorded with bluegrass instrumentation in a folk-grass or new-grass genre. Says drummer James Toomey, “This worked for the first batch of songs, but the bluegrass structure be came a little too constricting for some of the other songs Christian was writing, so Annie and Christian decided to expand the instru mentation a bit.”

Today High Planes counts seven band members, and on some Ghost Town tracks, even more, with friends and family enlisted to play. Toomey’s father-in-law, Paul Dube, a bluegrass musician, played some accordion in “Orphan Songs & Dirty Hands.” “Now we are really playing with the idea of how to incor porate so many instruments and voices,” says Toomey. “There are so many possibilities.”

PlanesHighofcourtesyPhoto

By Adam Hogue he band High Planes approaches folk in the vein of Josh Ritter, The Decemberists, James Taylor, and Joe Pug, allowing a simple chordal song structure and a story to form the foundation on which to layer various tools of the folk trade. Pi ano, harmonica, accordion, lead guitars, strings, and lush harmonies visit each track, taking mo ments to stand up and stand out between the all-important story that each song tells.

TOP TRAX Figure 8: One of the sparser tracks on the record, this one starts with simple finger-picked guitar and some accented piano lines. I think it captures the essence of what makes a High Planes song good: the story is simple and meaningful, all brought together with a slowly building duet between Caldarone and vocalist Annie Jaehnig. Orphan Songs & Dirty Hands: Mostly testimonial, this song is the liveliest of the record, bringing all hands on deck for a six-minute party to close things out. It also bookends nicely with the first couple bluegrass tracks, bringing it back with one last straight-forward folk-rocker before they sign o .

LINER NOTES

LivingRoomUTB.bandcamp.com

“Christian’s songs range from various sources – some personal, some based on books or news items he’s read,” says Toomey. “He wrote ‘Season for the Ghosts’ after a long conversation he had with a friend who described her experience of being an empath. He was reading a Haruki Murakami novel at that time, so some of that type of imagery crept in as well. From Chris tian’s standpoint, he thinks what makes a good songwriting story is something that is relat able, has personal interesting details, and asks universal questions.”

Local label Where The Living Room Used To Be released Ghost Town on limited-edition lathe-cut vinyl and compact disc that includes a 12-page booklet with lyrics and features art work by local photographer David Lawlor.

Paul Yates: piano on track 8

Notably, Ghost Town hits a mid-album stride. Tracks four through eight showcase a broad range of takes on folk, allowing the var ious instrumentalists and vocalists to shine. The songs all hold a hard-working, introspec tive, after-hours, haunting quality that con veys the mill city vibe of northern Rhode Is land, where many members are based.

uy Benoit has held many jobs, but none was more unexpected than park ranger. Benoit is an affable and quick-witted con versationalist, and you could picture him as a screenwriter, hustling in Hollywood for four years. He’s also a versatile copywriter, churning out sentences for a range of clients (including Providence Media). He could even pass for the dog-catcher or file clerk he once was. But a park ranger? “I’m not an outdoorsy person,” Benoit con fides. “I am a man of the great indoors.” Yet, the role actually suited him well. The National Park Service (NPS) hired Benoit in 2011 to welcome visitors to the Captain Wilbur Kelly House, a Blackstone Valley State Park museum in Lincoln that stands along the park’s bike trail. Nestled among pre-locomo tive canal routes, the museum’s primary theme is the history of transportation. But the Kelly House is also symbolic of the Industrial Rev olution, green spaces, wildlife habitats, and centuries of Rhode Island heritage. As visitors popped in, Benoit would regale them with facts and anecdotes about the region.

“I was an emissary of good will to the bi cyclists who passed by,” recalls Benoit, who manned the museum until 2015. Then the NPS came up with another idea, which was even better suited to the veteran filmmaker: a series of informational videos, which would explore the history and signifi cance of the Blackstone River Valley. A Lincoln native, Benoit studied English at Providence College and spent several years on the road as a musician. He became interested in film and collaborated with the then-unknown thriller and horror director Brad Anderson, among others. Benoit moved to Los Angeles in 2000 to pursue a career Park Cinema A filmmaker and former ranger is helping Blackstone Valley share stories about its past and present

“There’s this element of, ‘Let’s try some thing different,’” says Benoit, who has pro duced about a dozen videos in the past seven years. Each is unique: one is a traditional trav elog; another mimics the free-form PBS talk shows of the 1970s; and a third – a Halloween short – is presented as a narrative story. This diverse storytelling is in keeping with the YouTube account for the Blackstone Riv er Valley National Historic Park, which mix es dozens of visual lectures and virtual tours. As Benoit quickly discovered, the story of this region is encyclopedic in scope, even for someone who grew up nearby.

“I had a big crash course at the begin ning, and I’ve tried to pick stuff up as I go,” says Benoit. His appreciation for local ter rain has grown exponentially in the decade he has spent celebrating it. “You have these collisions of big iron structures in pasto ral environments. It really is like walking among Mayan ruins.”

Producing the videos has been a win-win for Benoit and the NPS. On the one hand, incalculable local viewers have learned about the ground beneath their feet. On the other, Benoit is a working filmmaker once more, far from the impersonal hubbub of Southern California. “It’s Rhode Island, so you can’t make a liv ing [as a screenwriter],” he says, “but you can get involved in something you care about.”

The script was never produced, however, and despite his best efforts, Benoit didn’t see himself as a lifelong Angelino. “LA’s all about the work,” he remembers. “The people you know are the people you work with. I don’t begrudge them, but I got very lonely.” Benoit returned to Rhode Is land and started afresh. Benoit never stopped writing, but the NPS video project was a bolstering opportunity. Spearheaded by supervisory ranger Kevin Kly berg, NPS approved the proposal for a new series of videos and offered Benoit a small budget. Instead of a traditional “Ken Burns”style documentary series, NPS has encouraged Benoit to experiment with the form.

For the uninitiated, Farmaesthetics is a line of all-natural skincare made right here in Rhode Island with organically grown herbs and flowers. It was founded by Brenda Brock, now an acclaimed leader in sustainable beauty, then an actress on the soap opera One Life to Live , who spent her down-time mixing herbal formulas into soaps and lotions to show her young daughter Lela Barclay de Tolly that products “don’t grow on shelves.”

It was Barclay de Tolly who came up with the idea of the pop-up. “I knew immediately

A

Like her parents, Barclay de Tolly is artistically inclined. She graduated from RISD with a degree in furniture design and headed west where she worked in Los Angeles doing set design and props. When the pandemic hit, she suggested her mother shutter the Farmaesthetics flagship store in Newport, which had been on Bellevue Avenue for 13 years. “It was time for a fresh vision,” says Barclay de Tolly of the brand and, as it turns out, her own life. “The foothills were on fire, it was raining ash, and it was 100 degrees. Plus COVID. It was a lot and I wanted to be near family and the ocean.”

t the edge of a farm near the path to the raspberries is a small outbuilding. It’s an unassuming shack treated to fresh coats of white paint; the diagonal braces of its two wideopen doors, left natural, form a welcoming and rustic double Z. Sitting on a raised platform, humble chairs flank each side of the entrance, and a wavy tin overhang extends from the roof; the faint scent of lavender and citrusy bergamot entices from within. This idyllic cottage is the Farmaesthetics pop-up shop at Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown, and like this former tool shed turned apothecary, there’s more to this endeavor than meets the eye.

Barclay de Tolly returned to the Ocean State. Brock was thrilled and installed her daughter as the company’s first-ever art director. “It made perfect sense,” says Brock. “She knows the business inside and out.”

By the summer of 1999, Brock had enough inventory to sell her mixtures. The family, which includes husband Paul Barclay de Tolly, a noted furniture maker, relocated a 1920s pie stand from Charlestown to Wapping Road in Middletown as their first retail space. Lela was six years old. “She would help pack goodie bags,” Brock recounts. “Lela has been there every step of the way.”

Through October 31

For three months, Barclay de Tolly planned, researched, and did technical drawings. The porch was cleaned and built out, and electricity was put in; then, over the course of two weeks, it was painted and decorated. A sink, reclaimed from a Newport mansion that had been in the Bellevue shop, was installed, and furniture was sourced from thrift stores. Finally, shelves were lined with signature small-batch goods housed in frosted glass bottles, jars, or wrapped in luxe paper, with simple and effective labels, drawing on a font suite that resembles typewriting paired with cursive.

And what does mom think? “It’s a new vision but the heart of the brand is the same,” says Brock. “High-end in a little shed. We’re going back to the farm.”

“I love the white walls with exposed beams,” Barclay de Tolly says with a sunny smile. “There’s a bright, fresh feeling with the rustic tones of the building. The dried and hanging lavender comes from my coworker’s garden, the ceramic bowls were made by a local potter, the sign was hand-painted in Providence, the tables were designed and built by my father, the paintings were my great grandmother’s. It was heartwarming being able to reimagine my mother’s original farm stand, creating a modern-day iteration of what her business has grown to be.”

I wanted to do it at Sweet Berry Farm given the parallels in the two entrepreneurs’ businesses, having both started at farm stands in 1999 on Wapping Road in Middletown,” she explains, referencing longtime friends and neighbors Jan and Michelle Eckhart, who own Sweet Berry, originally a hobby farm that has grown to a pickyour-own destination with a cafe and market.

The Farmaesthetics pop-up at Sweet Berry Farm would be Barclay de Tolly’s solo project. “Brenda has her fingerprint on everything,” says Barclay de Tolly. “She’s the formulator, designs the packaging. This was the first time she completely let go.” Brock confirms, “I didn’t even want to visit [the site] because I didn’t want to interfere with her vision.”

This vision started with taking a second look at a “really dirty” tool shed on the Sweet Berry Farm property. “I wanted to keep the pop-up sustainable and local, supporting local creators and artists.”
