Repairs begin on the Pump House post-fire

THE SHOW GOES ON Music returns to the Pump House after taking a hit from a damaging fire in spring As pandemic restrictions have eased, many music venues spent spring eagerly planning for a busy summer of shows. Wakefield’s Pump House Music Works was among them until disaster struck on May 6 when a fire ripped through the venue. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but damage was extensive. “It’s been a whirlwind of a couple of weeks,” said Pump House president Dan Collins just after the fire struck. “I’m still processing everything, but in hindsight I’m feeling very lucky that no one was hurt. We had substantial losses inside the building as the fire was in an area where we store all our musical equipment.” Pump House is a popular non-profit that presents concerts and other events in their intimate 125-person space. National touring artists and locals share the stage, along with several open mic events held weekly. Over the past few years, the venue has become one of South County’s premier live music spots, with shows every weekend. Photos courtesy of Pump House Music Works

By Ken Abrams

Although the fire was contained to one area of the building, it was centered in the “green room,” where most of the audio equipment is stored. The biggest loss hit Collins personally – among the items destroyed in the fire was his collection of handmade instruments that he built over the last 30 years. “It’s hard to put a value on some of that stuff. It’s a big bummer; I’m really depressed about that – it’s all just sort of hitting me now,” says Collins. “We have an outdoor stage and tent, and after the fire happened, we really got into gear to make sure that we could at least hold fundraisers and things like that outside,” he continues. The venue had some insurance,

14

SO Rhode Island Summer • July 2022

but it didn’t cover everything. “The fire damage to the building was covered, but much of the equipment inside was not.” Of course, as they say in the entertainment business, “the show must go on.” Within a couple of weeks, after smoke damage was abated, the venue resumed indoor performances. They plan to continue live indoor and outdoor shows throughout the summer. At press, a Benefit Concert Series is in the works, which will be streamed on their new YouTube this summer. Even before the fire, plans were in motion to improve the facility. “I’m putting in a commercial kitchen so that we can sell food

in the future. That was a big project that we had planned for this year,” says Collins. Although the fire was certainly a setback, Collins appreciates the community response. “I’m just really grateful for all the support we’ve seen for live music in Rhode Island. I’ve been amazed at the outpouring of support from fans of Pump House and the musicians for donating time and helping us generate funds. It’s been really touching.” With a long journey still ahead, Pump House Music Works is looking for a little help from their friends – come out to a concert to show your support; check the full line-up online. Bittersweet Melody One musician from Wakefield who’s taking on new jobs but struggling to pay for basics, like food and rent By Joe Tasca

Dylan Butler is used to starting his workday when most people are ending theirs. He’s a musician, and on this weekday he arrives at Hill’s Tavern in Chepachet at 5:00pm to set up his drums and run a sound check. Come 7:00pm, it’s showtime. Butler’s been making a living as a full-time musician since 2017 when he left his job at a trophy shop in Smithfield. But it hasn’t been easy in recent years. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and bars and clubs shut down, his income stopped virtually overnight. He went on unemployment and pandemic stimulus checks kept him financially above water. For Butler, it was hard to accept after spending three years successfully living his dream. “I was so busy, I didn’t even have to look

16

SO Rhode Island Summer • July 2022

for the work,” Butler said. “So that was nice. I was making good money and getting tons of practice time, which is just as important to me as the money. I was really rolling. And then with COVID, it was a pretty heartbreaking thing losing that revenue stream.” Now that live music is back, Butler is playing about three shows a week, but he’s still not making nearly as much money as he was in the winter of 2020, before the pandemic. Venue owners have higher costs now because of inflation, and those added expenses often get passed on to performers. “A lot of bars just are basically not able to pay what they had been paying before,” Butler said. “The first thing to always get cut when budgets

are getting cut is art and music, unfortunately. The past couple of months have been tougher than it has been in awhile with inflation and gas prices. I drive all over the place with a Jeep-full of drums. It costs 80 bucks to fill the tank right now. So yeah, I’m paycheck-to-paycheck.” Butler says the fact that venues are paying less for live entertainment is forcing him to diversify his skillset in order to make more money. He teaches lessons occasionally, and records live shows for other musicians. It’s a lot of work, but he says it’s worth it because working with students makes him a better person and sound engineering makes him a better drummer. But even though he’s doing more than just performing, paying the bills hasn’t gotten

any easier. As the cost of living continues to rise, Butler has had to make a number of sacrifices just to get by. He says 75% of his income alone goes to paying rent at his small apartment in Wakefield. “I mean, I don’t have internet at my apartment,” Butler said. “I canceled basically everything that costs extra money. Like, I’m down to the basics and just able to barely get by, even though I’m hustling every day of the week, playing shows and really going at it but really feel like I’m spinning my tires sometimes financially.” Butler says he doesn’t mind hustling. He drives all over the state to play live shows. One night he’s in Smithfield, the next night he’s in Narragansett. He also travels to Florida for a small tour every winter and he’s opened for well-known acts like Buckcherry and Ace Frehley. While performing is his passion, he knows that financial stability for a full-time musician in the current economic climate is precarious, at best. He says he’d love to play weddings and corporate gigs someday because those opportunities are much more lucrative. For now, he’s trying to stay focused on the present moment, but that’s not always easy and he admits it can be frustrating. “You get people telling you to get a real job and people that don’t understand it and people that think you’re just chasing a pipe dream or whatever, but I know there’s no other way I can be happy,” Butler said. “I don’t know how not to do this. I don’t know, it’s like a double-edged sword. It’s bittersweet right now.” Dylan says he doesn’t want his current financial challenges to force him to give up on his dream. He says someday he’d like to be able to save up his money and buy a house of his own, and he thinks things will all come together in time. For now, he says, he gets to do what he enjoys everyday, and for Butler, that’s what matters most.

Hero Pup Local K-9 Ruby’s legacy is memorialized in a Netflix film telling her story

Corporal Dan O’Neill and K-9 Ruby

RHODY PET OF THE MONTH: ZEUS By Karen Kalunian Zeus is a two-year-old Catahoula mixed breed with an incredible, colorful coat. Bright blue eyes just add to this pup’s beauty. Zeus, who enjoys hiking and long walks, is in search of a family who can keep up with his active lifestyle – a fenced in yard where he could run and play would be great, too. When you first meet Zeus, he’s a little shy, but once he feels comfortable, he’ll show you his fun-loving, playful side. Zeus is also extremely smart and loyal and loves a good treat. If you are in search of a companion that meets his description, please contact Heart of RI Animal Rescue League for more information at heartofriadoption@gmail.com or 401-467-3670, or visit (no appointment needed) at 44 Worthington Road, Cranston during business hours. Find more adoption information online at HeartOfRI.org

K-9 Ruby may have gained a national spotlight with the new Netflix movie Rescued by Ruby, but her humble roots originate here in Rhode Island. “I’ve always been a huge advocate of giving shelter pets a second chance,” says Corporal Dan O’Neil, the Rhode Island State Police trooper whose steadfast love and determination turned this wayward rescue pup into a superstar in the search-and-rescue field, winning American Humane’s Hero Dog of the Year in 2018. Ruby was a Border Collie Australian Shepherd cross who was first surrendered as a puppy to the Rhode Island SPCA in East Providence for her unmanageable behaviors. She was returned by five different adopters and just two hours

shy of being euthanized when shelter volunteer Patricia Inman proposed this “smart, dynamite” pup for police training, convinced she just needed a job. Ruby met with Corporal O’Neil of Wickford Barracks determined to fulfill his goal for her of making the K-9 unit against all odds, and a dream partnership was formed. The movie, which was released for streaming March 17, is based on the true story of their work. It draws parallels between the pair, showing how both man and dog needed to work a little harder to harness their kinetic energy and focus – but when they do, the results are remarkable. In 2017, a teenager went missing in the Glocester woods and Ruby was the one to

locate him, lying unconscious and bleeding. The boy was safely reunited with his mother, who turned out to be the very volunteer who campaigned for Ruby at the shelter. In the film, O’Neil is portrayed by Grant Gustin (to the delight of O’Neil’s young sons who loved him as The Flash), whose performance makes this a very human story as well as a canine one. But while the movie is keenly feel-good, there was real life heartbreak in May this year when Ruby passed away at age 11. The loss may be great, but Ruby’s legacy is greater. While the O’Neil family mourns privately, the official word comes from Colonel Darnell S. Weaver. “K-9 Ruby dedicated her life to

Finders Keepers A treasure hunt for glass orbs keeps the focus on the natural beauty of Block Island

There are few adventures more exciting than a treasure hunt – and not all of them are reserved for the plots of movies and books. Block Island is home to its very own type of finders-keepers quest, thanks to a local glassblower. When Eben Horton was 19, he hid his glass creations on nearby beaches. “I just thought it’d be a fun thing to do that would blow peoples’ minds when they found these things,” Horton says. Fast forward to today – his fun and casual practice has been transformed into The Glass Float

Project, an epic, nationally known scavenger hunt on Block Island. Horton, who owns The Glass Station Studio and Gallery in Wakefield with his wife, Jennifer Nauck, conceived of The Glass Float Project in 2011. “As an artist, I was definitely a victim of the great recession, being a glass blower,” Horton states, explaining how he had an abundance of free time on his hands. Itching for something to do, he decided to hide glass, just like he’d done when he was a teenager, but on a much larger scale. With a grant from the Rhode Island Council on the

Arts, Horton created 150 blown glass orbs, and, with permission from the Block Island Town Council, hid his floats on the island’s paths and beaches. Thus, The Glass Float Project was born. Now, 11 years later, the project has grown and expanded into a well-known opportunity for locals and travelers alike, even garnering attention from CBS News and The New York Times. With the help of their studio team, Horton and Nauck create over 550 glass floats each year that they and their volunteers hide on

the island. “The Glass Float Project has totally taken on a life of its own. It’s not the only thing we do here, but I feel like it’s the most important because we reach so many people, including those who hear about this project and are booking trips to Block Island specifically to go out hunting,” Nauck says enthusiastically. Hunters get to keep the float they find, and each float is numbered and dated so it can be registered on The Glass Float Project’s website. The project officially begins the first day of June and ends Columbus Day Weekend,

but floats can be found any day of the year. Not all floats are found in a single season because with so many beaches and trails, seekers really need to search to find an orb. After all, the original intention behind the project was to simply encourage people to get outside and enjoy the island’s beauty. According to Nauck, “The thrill of the hunt keeps them looking for new trails and new places. There’s that element of discovery. Even if you aren’t finding a float, you’re discovering parts of the island you wouldn’t normally see.” For those who come away

empty-handed, she adds, “It’s not about finding the float; it’s about the journey and being with yourself, your family, or your friends in nature.” The Block Island Tourism Council helps to cover basic material costs, and the rest of the project is funded by an October raffle hosted by Horton and Nauck’s studio and gallery. As for where the project is headed, Horton intends to maintain the status quo. As he says, “Its identity is Block Island. I like it just the way it is.” Learn more at TheGlassStationStudio.com

Zero-waste Home and Beauty We’re on the hunt for Rhody Gems! Every neighborhood has that secret, hidden, cool and unusual, or hole-in-the-wall spot that locals love. Email or tag us on social media using #RhodyGem to suggest yours, and we might just feature it! What it is: A thoughtful, plastics-free retail space offering sustainable goods and refillable products, along with hosting community events and classes.

What makes it a Rhody Gem? Calm vibes and a peaceful aura envelop you when arriving at this retail space that provides eco-friendly, fair trade alternatives to everyday home and beauty items. Owner Marissa Cox combined her passion for environmental causes with her experience in retail to create this mission-forward outpost for all things sustainable. Cox intentionally selects each item to ensure it’s made sustainably and ethically. Many local artisans are represented among the hand-crafted goods. Products range from sponge cloths to house-made baking soda-free deodorant. At the “refill and chill” station, customers can choose from several refillable products like shampoo and conditioner. The essential oils and natural herbs used in the vegan and organic soaps infuse calming scents into the serene lounge area, where customers can hang out for Communi-Tea, a monthly herbal tea gathering, or participate in upcycled art workshops and DIY make-and-take events. “My hope is to serve not only as a place to stock up on sustainable products and gifts, but also as a space to discover and build community,” says Cox.

The Fantastic Umbrella Factory is a destination with something for everyone

With its quiet, sandy beaches and curious wooded spaces, Charlestown offers some of South County’s best natural scenery. SHOP Books on the Pond (289 Narrow Ln.) is a treasure trove of books, games, and gifts with a reading room and outdoor patio. Looking for a bottle of wine to enjoy back in your hotel or bring for a picnic on the beach? Choose from a wide selection, plus beer and spirits, at Charlestown Wine & Spirits (4625 Old Post Rd.). And if you forgot any travel essentials or are looking for a snack, find everything you need –

from toiletries to lotto tickets to fresh produce – at Charlestown Mini Super (4071 Old Post Rd.). Contrary to its name, the Fantastic Umbrella Factory (4820 Old Post Rd.) does not make or even sell umbrellas. This whimsical destination defies description, but is a great place to spend a few hours. Since 1968, the 19th century farmyard has been a sort of artist collective and international bazaar where you’ll find everything from penny candy to local art. The expansive property is filled with flowers, sculptures, and places to sit and take everything in. The Umbrella Factory Gardens is an on-site greenhouse that sells unique plants and florals. There’s a bamboo maze and a barnyard filled with emus, goats, and chickens.

EAST GREENWICH Urban sophistication meets coastal chic

Not a coffee fan? Spill the Tea (4372 Post Rd.) is a sustainable tea house serving healthful and fun iced and hot varieties. To taste some of Rhode Island’s food heritage, stop by Jigger’s Diner (145 Main St.), which has been around since 1917 and is a go-to destination for johnnycakes, the iconic food made from cornmeal ground at Kenyon’s Grist Mill in Kingston. A second location, Jigger’s South (640 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown), will be open for summer.

other towns also stake this claim, but East Greenwich is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization. See East Greenwich’s history for yourself at its two museums. The Varnum House Museum (57 Pierce St.) is a Georgian mansion that is a time capsule of early American life. JAMESTOWN A laid-back island getaway

New to the island is Beech, an upscale casual eatery paying homage to a 150-year-old tree

For an island with a little over 5,000 residents, Jamestown has plenty of impressive dining. New to the scene this season are Beech (13 Narragansett Ave.), opened by a born-andraised Jamestownian serving upscale casual fare, from fresh-cut pasta to local seafood; Our Table (53 Narragansett Ave.), a meal delivery service turned restaurant cooking up familiar dishes with a culinary twist; and coming soon, JB’s on the Water (150 Conanicus Ave.) for fans of Wickford on the Water. small menu changes often, but ingredients are local and at the peak of freshness, and everything – down to the cocktail sauce – is housemade. Tallulah’s Taqueria (35 Narragansett Ave.) brings Providence cult-favorite counterserve tacos, nachos, and burritos, plus an outdoor patio. If you’re looking for something a bit more casual, Slice of Heaven (32 Narragansett Ave. #1166) is a European-style bakery that serves breakfast and lunch, plus coffee, pastries, and cocktails. Village Hearth Bakery & Cafe (2 Watson Ave.) cooks up wood-fired artisan breads and pizzas made from scratch

and baked on-site in their rustic, cozy cafe (with a pop-up restaurant at Curiosity & Co through September 25). East Ferry Deli (47 Conanicus Ave.), open for breakfast and lunch daily, is known for their specialty sandwiches and sweeping waterfront views. The Narragansett Cafe (25 Narragansett Ave.) hosts some of the area’s best live music during the summer. Bands range from jazz and blues to rock, and are always danceable. Find familiar pub fare staples and plenty on draft, along with a brunch menu of signature Benedict varieties, Blood Marys, and mimosas.

Prepare to whip out your phone or camera to capture the beauty of Beavertail State Park

EXPLORE Beavertail State Park (Beavertail Rd.) is notably one of the most beautiful pieces of scenery in New England. The rocky coastline offers views of Newport and the Atlantic Ocean from any of its four overlooks and from the hiking trails throughout. The park is also home to Beavertail Lighthouse & Museum and a small aquarium with exhibits on local sea life. Director Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums) was so taken with Beavertail that he filmed scenes from Moonrise Kingdom there. Spend an afternoon exploring, or enjoy their environmental interpretive program with guided excursions.

Jamestown is only nine miles long and one mile wide, but there’s a lot of history on the island. Fort Wetherill (3 Fort Wetherill Rd.), an abandoned military fort, is a mustsee destination. Besides the fort itself, which has become something of a graffiti art museum, the views from the cliffs of this 100-foot vantage are stunning. It’s also a popular spot for scuba divers. Conanicut Battery National Historic Park (Battery Ln.) is home to several earthen fortifications dating back to the Revolutionary War, built by both colonists and the British. Explore the trails, which have information on the park’s history. Fort Getty Park

(1050 Fort Getty Rd.), another piece of Jamestown’s military history, has fishing areas and a campground. Watson Farm (455 North Rd.) has been in operation since 1796, and offers self-guided tours of livestock, wildlife, and farm history. The Jamestown Historical Society (92 Narragansett Ave.) is a hub for all of the island’s historic preservation, including the Jamestown Museum, Meetinghouse, and Jamestown Philomenian Library. Be sure to see the windmill, located on North Road near Weeden Land, open weekends or by appointment (JamestownHistoricalSociety.org).

GALILEE Catch a wave – or some fish.

A day at Salty Brine State Beach offers essential coastal fun

This corner of Narragansett is best known as the fishing port of Point Judith – home of Rhode Island’s famous calamari – but the village of Galilee has a lot more to offer in fun and food.

SHOP As the hub of Block Island transportation, Galilee sees the most tourist traffic; though the Block Island Ferry (304 Great Island Rd.) also sails from Newport and Fall River, MA, the busiest boats come and go from this port. Get there early to ensure good parking, and spend that extra time strolling around and shopping for souvenirs.

EXPLORE

George’s of Galilee (250 Sand Hill Cove Rd.) and Champlin’s Seafood (256 Great Island Rd.) are so close together they share a parking lot. Champlin’s, serving traditional New England clam shack fare since the 1930s, has an attached seafood market and a second-floor restaurant where almost all of the seating is outdoors (including the Channel Lounge where you can watch the boats go by). Founded in 1948, George’s has a walk-up window for beach snacks – they also offer service to your beach chair – full restaurant, and even a tiki bar! Jimmy’s Port Side Restaurant (321 Great Island Rd. #5627), a few steps down the road, serves day-caught seafood in their large dining room and outdoor patio.

There’s a reason you see Point Judith calamari on every restaurant’s menu in Rhode Island – it’s simply the best. The state’s freshest, most coveted seafood is brought into this port. Get it right from the source at the fishing docks, where you can pick up lobsters, squid, clams, and whatever other seafood is fresh.

PLAY Salty Brine State Beach, named after one of Rhode Island’s most beloved radio and TV icons, is a little patch of shore that’s great for families. Catch some fish from a custom yacht with Seven B’s (30 State St.), plus whale watch with Frances Fleet (33 State St.), both operating at limited capacity.

NORTH KINGSTOWN A charming corner of Rhode Island’s history

North Kingstown has played an important role in American aviation, naval development, and innovation. SHOP Driving along Post Road you’ll find the usual strip mall businesses but keep your eyes peeled for eclectic shops like Rē (7511 & 7512 Post Rd.), which specializes in antiques, art, jewelry and more. upcycled home decor. Treat yourself to a massage, facial, spa experience, or other treatments at Island Rose Spa (7417 Post Rd.).

DINE You won’t go hungry in North Kingstown – that’s for sure. Allie’s Donuts (3661 Quaker Ln.) is a must-stop. Famous for their delicious donuts, the bakery also makes (equally amazing) custom donut cakes. The Carriage Inn (1065 Tower Hill Rd.) offers family favorites in a historic setting, and its owners also recently opened The Frozen Cow Ice Cream Shoppe

and Roy Boy’s Clam Shack (6710 Post Rd.). It’s all about comfort food at Rome Point Cafe (820 Boston Neck Rd.), which serves eclectic breakfast and lunch, plus vegetarian options. Oak Hill Tavern (565 Tower Hill Rd.) dishes up big portions and live music. Upscale dining and sipping can be found at Sonoma Bistro and Wine Bar (7366 Post Rd.), and delicatessen lunch inspired by the Big Apple can be found at The Provisioner New York Deli (7669 Post Rd.). West Passage Brewing (7835 Post Rd.) pours pale ales and more to pair with a curated menu of good eats.

Fayerweather Craft Guild (1859 Mooresfield Rd./Rte 138), housed in a small white dwelling from the 1820s, is the place to go for handmade goods by local member artisans, along with demonstrations and monthly craft fairs. Peter Pots Pottery (494 Glen Rock Rd.) is a Rhode Island staple, crafting beautiful and functional stoneware since 1948. Find farm-fresh produce and handmade goods from the Pasquale Farmstand (190 Usquepaugh Rd.). For a fresh look, Crops Barber & Beauty is a fun and funky unisex barbershop (offering free mullets!), and Superior Tanning is a must to get your summer glow on, both in the Kingston Emporium (99 Fortin Rd.).

DINE Brewery and taproom Shaidzon Beer Company (141 Fairgrounds Rd.) incorporates local love and herbal notes in creative brews like Aunt Carrie’s, a pale ale

nodding to the iconic restaurant in Narragansett, and Salt Shovel, a refreshing summer collab with Origin Beer Project in Cranston. Watch for food trucks popping up on the patio all season. TLC Coffee Roasters (3362 Kingstown Rd.), a nearby specialty cafe, roasts its own beans and serves 21 iced coffees on tap. Zip over to the Kingston Emporium (99 Fortin Rd.) on the University of Rhode Island (URI) campus for a breakfast sammie and coffee from Providence Bagel; a hot sub, burger, or any sandwich imaginable from Albie’s Place; eclectic farm-to-table from New Wave Kitchen; and round out your visit with sweet treats and acai bowls from ChocoLoco Creperie & Waffle Bar.

MATUNUCK Fresh from the ocean

Enjoy a rooftop deck and ocean views with classic Irish faves at The Pub

SHOP Whether you’re a surfer or beach bum, Matunuck Beach Road is a must-stop before hitting the waves. Looking for souvenirs? Head to SeaView’s Matunuck Tees (682 Matunuck Beach Rd.), part of SeaView Marketplace, a local fave for grabbing lunch – SeaView Sandwiches are perfect for bringing to the beach. For farm-totable goods and garden center products, stop at Carpenter’s Farm (522 Matunuck Beach Rd.). And of course, Matunuck Surf Shop (920 Matunuck Beach Rd.) has all your watersport essentials, including boards, wetsuits, and paddleboards for rent. Next door, discover the Shaun Rock Art Gallery (706 Matunuck Beach Rd.).

DINE Matunuck Oyster Bar (629 Succotash Rd.) is

104

on the short list of must-try restaurants, not just for its preparations of fresh, local fish, but also because owner Perry Raso raises his own Matunuck Oysters, available from the always-packed raw bar, and grows his vegetables at Matunuck Vegetable Farm. Across the street, Cap’n Jack’s (706 Succotash Rd.) and sister restaurant Salt Marsh Pub and Raw Bar serve up traditional New England fare, with an attached bakery that’s impossible to resist. Bring your own wine to Jim’s Dock (1175 Succotash Rd.), where you can pick your own lobster and eat it on picnic tables on an actual fishing dock. The Ocean Mist (895 Matunuck Beach Rd.) is the quintessential beach bar: great pub fare, cold beers, and easygoing patrons. By day, the O Mist is a family-friendly

restaurant perfect for post-beach grub; by night, it’s a live music venue and coastal nightlife spot – reserve tickets for shows online. Next door, The Pub (907 Matunuck Beach Rd.) has traditional Irish food, as well as several decks, beach access, and lots of live music; across the street is Matunuck Pizza Pie Co. (920 Matunuck Beach Rd). Daddy’s Bread (805 Moonstone Beach Rd.) is a hidden bakery where you’ll never see a baker. Choose from baked-daily loaves like Parmesan Dill Garlic, known as the “PDG” or Apple Cinnamon, leave your cash in the honor system till, and just try to make it back to your car before you tear into them. Looking for ice cream? The Vanilla Bean (757 Matunuck Beach Rd.) is a summer staple

WESTERLY City sophistication with a beach town vibe

The southernmost town in Rhode Island is a popular landing spot for visitors, and it’s not hard to see why. Easy access to the ferries and proximity to the highway – plus a lot of city sophistication with a small-town feel – make Westerly a destination. SHOP Bibliophiles, be sure to head to Savoy Bookshop & Café (10 Canal St.), an independent bookstore that feels like a trek back in time with handsome bookcases, high ceilings, and cozy reading nooks (pro tip: be on the lookout for fairy doors!). Across the street, find Christina’s Ltd. (1 Canal St.), a boho-style clothing boutique. For fine jewelry and trinkets, check out OMO Jewels & Gifts

DINE Rivaling Providence and Newport, Westerly is a foodie’s dream town – so it’s no wonder James Beard award-winning chef Jeanie Roland (who also beat Bobby Flay in the Food Network series) chose this coastal town to open her premier eatery, Ella’s Food & Drink (2 Tower St.). A large Italian population has given the town its own iconic food, too; soupy is a dry-cured Italian pork sausage descended from the sopressata of the area’s Calabrian heritage. Every family has its own recipe, but

the sausage is available for sale at places like Dipper’s Packing Co. (55 Ledward Ave.) and Dunns Corners Market (5 Langworthy Rd.). Additionally, Westerly is home to most any restaurant that fits your taste, from farm-tobun offerings at Graze Burgers (127 Granite St.) to chef-driven, adventurous small plates at The Shallows (54R High St.) and Irish-American fare at Kelley’s Deli (116 Granite St. #8). Noodle Revolution (87 Oak St.) serves some of the best Asian street food around, and Koi (65 High St.) offers creative sushi. If you’re craving Italian food, Vetrano’s (130 Granite St.) offers homestyle pasta and pizza while Casa Della Luce (105 Franklin St.) puts a fresh spin on the classics. Catch the game at CC O’Brien’s Sports Cafe (8 Mechanic St.) or grab breakfast or lunch with a water view at Mia’s Cafe (1 W Broad St.). For a light treat, don’t miss Pompelmo Gelato (31 High St.).

Paddy’s Beach Club (159 Atlantic Ave.) has lounge chairs available on their private beach area, as well as several outdoor bars. You can

116

walk straight off the sand, have lunch, and hear some live music in the afternoon at The Andrea (89 Atlantic Ave.). The Windjammer Surf Bar (321 Atlantic Ave.) offers live music and sweeping ocean views. The Pleasant View Inn (65 Atlantic Ave.) is a beachfront resort with a private beach and on-site restaurant. The Hotel Maria (132 Atlantic Ave.) is just steps off the beach and serves Mediterranean-inspired seafood at Maria’s Seaside Cafe.

EXPLORE From Misquamicut State Beach, head east on Atlantic Avenue to discover the scenic

beauty of the Winnapaug and Quonochontaug salt ponds, each opening to the Atlantic Ocean via a breachway lined with rock jetties. A couple of turns later, find the rustic grandeur of the Weekapaug Inn (25 Spray Rock Rd.), a coastal boutique hotel.

PLAY Atlantic Beach Park (321 Atlantic Ave.) is an oceanfront family center offering carnival-style rides and a hundred-year-old carousel. Weekend nights bring the Misquamicut Drive-In (316 Atlantic Ave.) to the beach, featuring classic movies under the stars.

DINE St. Clair Annex (141 Bay St.) is Watch Hill’s iconic ice cream parlor and clam shack. Olympia Tea Room (74 Bay St.), even at over 100 years old, continues to put a fresh spin on classic New England fare. For sweets, head to The Candy Box (14 Fort Rd.), a quintessential coastal candy shop. Feeling luxurious? While staying at Ocean House (1 Bluff Ave.) can be pricey, the hotel is visitor friendly,

especially the expansive Verandah Raw Bar that’s perfect for people-watching over cocktails. Restaurants range from a more casual gastropub and patio snacks to a fine dining experience and champagne garden.

EXPLORE East Beach is the little strip of white sand between Ocean House (1 Bluff Ave.) and Taylor Swift’s mansion. Parking can be a challenge, but it’s worth it. Watch Hill’s Napatree Point (Ford Rd.) is a popular spot for beachgoers, and it’s also a nature preserve where endangered piping plovers nest, so it’s a popular bird-watching spot as well. Sandy Point was once attached to Napatree, but hurricane erosion separated the two. The 35-acre island also has a public beach and is a nature preserve.

A chill atmosphere plus great food and drinks makes Diego’s a wharf favorite

DINE The dining scene in Newport is – in a word – legendary. From culinary classics to new must-try spots, there is no shortage of amazing food experiences to be had in the City by the Sea. Longtime favorite Newport restaurants like The Mooring (1 Sayers Wharf), The Black Pearl (30 Bannister’s Wharf), and Brick Alley Pub and Restaurant (140 Thames St.) will always draw crowds for their fresh, locally inspired dining. Seafood is the starring attraction at several downtown restaurants, including the sleek and modern Midtown Oyster Bar (345 Thames St.). Though Stoneacre Brasserie (28 Washington Sq.) changes its menu on a daily basis, you can count on Instagram-worthy, seasonally focused dishes. The Fifth Element (111 Broadway) serves creative mains and more in casual-hip digs (including its Outer Element, an outdoor beer garden). Jo’s American Bistro (24 Memorial Blvd. W) offers several gluten-free options and a prix fixe menu Sunday through Thursday. Find traditional, hearty Italian and matching ambience at Sardella’s (30 Memorial Blvd. W).

For a truly unique foodie experience, join Rhode Island Red Food Tours (270 Bellevue Ave.) for a culinary adventure through Newport or Providence. It’s a scientific fact: a cocktail is best enjoyed outside, by the water, in the summer. Newport has many options for oceanside imbibing, like the rooftop bar at the Hotel Viking (1 Bellevue Ave.) and the Lawn at Castle Hill (590 Ocean Dr.). Both have prime spots for sitting in the sunshine, sipping a delicious cocktail, and taking in the view. The Salvation Cafe (140 Broadway), an eclectic restaurant a bit off the tourist path, serves up seasonal mojitos, sangria, and tropical tasting concoctions in its courtyard Tiki Bar. Speaking of summer drinks, Diego’s (11 Bowen’s Wharf) has a massive cocktail menu, as well as mezcal and tequila libations. Taste the difference between silver, reposado, and anejo at Perro Salado (19 Charles St.), where tequila flights offer tastings of the imported and hard-tofind spirit. Pour Judgement (32 Broadway), known for their fun drinks and food all week long, goes all out for Sunday brunch with their signature Loaded Bloody Mary.

Newport’s best known attractions are the Newport Mansions, the larger-than-life “summer cottages” of the Vanderbilts and other illustrious turn-of-the-century families. The Breakers (44 Ochre Point Ave.) is the grandest of all of them; Rosecliff (548 Bellevue Ave.) has been the site of films like The Great Gatsby and True Lies; Marble House (596 Bellevue Ave.) has a Chinese teahouse on the grounds; and The Elms (367 Bellevue Ave.) has a to-die-for classical sculpture garden. Boating buffs won’t want to miss the newly opened Sailing Museum (365 Thames St.) with interactive exhibits for all levels of enthusiasts and two iconic halls of fame. If you can’t get enough maritime fun, head to Sail Newport (72 Fort Adams Dr.), a public center for rentals and classes, inside Fort Adams State Park (80 Fort Adams Dr.), hosting group and self-guided tours of the historic site . There are also many cultural attractions, like the Newport Art Museum (76 Bellevue Ave.), the National Museum of American Illustration (492 Bellevue Ave.), the Audrain Automobile Museum (222 Bellevue Ave.), the International Tennis Hall of Fame (194 Bellevue Ave.), Newport Historical Society (82 Touro St.), and Newport Art Museum (76 Bellevue Ave.). The series of communities east of Narragansett Bay are collectively known as the East Bay. Newport Vineyards (909 E Main Rd., Middletown), New England’s largest grape grower, is a major destination that offers wine tastings and tours. Greenvale Vineyards (582 Wapping Rd., Portsmouth) hosts wine tastings, food trucks, and live jazz shows on their picturesque coastal farm, and Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyards (162 West Main Rd., Little Compton) is a dreamy space with award-winning wines sold by the bottle along with grab-and-go foods to enjoy on the property.

Tours of the mansion and gardens are offered throughout the year, along with programs ranging from tea and scones on the porch to nature drawing and outdoor yoga. On 48 acres of coastal farmland, Coggeshall Farm Museum (1 Colt Drive) lets guests experience firsthand 18th century life for tenant farmers with immersive events and tours of the grounds. Overlooking Narragansett Bay, Mount Hope Farm (250 Metacom Ave.) is another historically significant property that dates back to early American settlement. In fact, some historians believe that the first Thanksgiving feast

Linden Place (500 Hope St.) is also steeped in history as one of the grandest examples of Federalist architecture in New England. Today the museum mansion offers community educational programs, tours, and events. Consider a scenic drive to Little Compton where you’ll find Wilbur’s General Store (50 Commons), the Art Cafe (7 South Of Commons Rd.), honor system farm stands, and stretches of Farm Coast charm. Or, use that drive to discover new artists in every kind of medium through the self-guided South Coast Artists Open Studio Tour (SouthCoastArtists.org) that runs the weekends of July 16-17 and August 20-21.

Bristol Historical (48 Court St.), offering exhibits and walking tours, is located right off the end of the East Bay Bike Path, a 14.5-mile paved and scenic trail that spans from Bristol to Providence. Norman Bird Sanctuary (583 Third Beach Rd., Middletown) has seven miles of well-preserved hiking trails on its educational campus.

Providence & War wick THE SMALLEST STATE’S LARGEST CITIES

Providence is worthy of a full vacation in its own right, but if your schedule only leaves room for a single day trip, here are some must-see highlights.

PROVIDENCE An ever-vibrant Creative Capital

SHOP Downtown Providence, AKA Downcity, is home to many of the Creative Capital’s most acclaimed restaurants, along with nightlife, theater, art galleries, and unique shopping. One of the most unique shopping destinations anywhere is The Arcade (65 Weybosset St.), America’s oldest indoor shopping mall, which is home to hip drinking and dining establishments, and a bookstore dedicated to the city’s own H.P. Lovecraft. On the street parallel, find stylish clothing for women at Queen of Hearts and Modern Love (220-222 Westminster St.), artful home goods at Homestyle (229 Westminster St.), and more. On the East Side of the city, Hope Street brims with unique boutiques: Frog & Toad (795 Hope St.) sells

148

quirky RI merch, Rhody Craft (769 Hope St.) offers local artisan gifts, and Stock Culinary Goods (756 Hope St.) has everything your kitchen could need. Find more fun on Thayer Street, the commercial strip near Brown U and RISD, and don’t miss Wayland Square for an assortment of unique cafes and upscale shops. An award-winning vintage and indie maker market, Providence Flea (275 S Water St.) takes place outdoors Sundays through September.

DINE Federal Hill is Providence’s famed Little Italy, but over the past decade or so it has become a much more multicultural dining destination. The main drag of Atwells Avenue is still home to many classic red sauce joints like Constantino’s Venda Bar & Ristorante and Trattoria Zooma, but boasts Mexican (Don Jose Tequilas), Thai (Thailand), and Japanese food (NAMI), too. For dining and nightlife that’s a bit off the beaten path, head over to the West Side, which is clustered around the two main

thoroughfares of Broadway and Westminster Street. This area is home to the city’s vanguard of restaurants serving gourmet food in fun, casual settings, and hip cocktail bars, like eclectic brunch at Julian’s (318 Broadway) or clever desserts from Sin (1413 Westminster St.).

EXPLORE The East Side is full of both beautifully preserved history and vibrant young energy. For the former, check out the Benefit Street Mile of History, the most impressive concentration of colonial homes in the country. For the latter, visit Thayer Street, the epicenter of College Hill’s food and nightlife scenes. Home to Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the RISD Museum (20 North Main St.), this neighborhood attracts the bright and creative. Colorful murals and structures can be spotted throughout the city’s center, most of them courtesy of The Avenue Concept. The cutting-edge public arts program has quite literally transformed the cityscape,

Happy Glampers One of USA Today’s 10 best spots for luxury camping is right here in Coventry Who doesn’t love to spend a starry evening next to the firepit? There’s nothing like that crackling sound or the smell of glowing embers. But that’s as far as many of us get to the notion of camping. Maybe you’ve toyed with the romantic idea of spending a night in the great outdoors but don’t know where to begin, or maybe it sounds good but sleeping on hard ground doesn’t hold much appeal. Enter glamping, where you can enjoy the rustic experience of camping without forgoing some of the amenities of everyday life like a mattress and bed linens. By Joe Sprague

A mashup of “glamorous” and “camping,” glamping became a thing in the early-aughts and really gained popularity during COVID-19. Consider it the Airbnb of camping. There are multiple places to go glamping right here in our own little state, including Glamp Frogmore in Coventry. Owned by married couple Justin Peters and Amy Barrett, the glampsite of two rustic retreats sits on their 35-acre property. (Frogmore is a nod to the historical name of the property.) After moving into their house 11 years ago, they brainstormed ways to best use and share the property. A schoolteacher by trade, Justin found

extra time on his hands when online teaching eliminated his 80-minute-each-way commute. Amy, a realtor and artist, says, “He spent a lot of time outside [doing projects]. He built an 18-hole disc golf course, a stone fire pit outside the house, and an arbor made of fallen trees.” Justin referred to it as “my therapy.”

Justin came across an article about Tentrr, a website that lists the location and information on camping and glamping sites around the country. A conversation with the company followed and the rest is history. Justin began building the first site (The Pines) in the fall of 2020 and it was ready to go the following spring. “We were hopeful that we would get some bookings,” remembers Amy, “and that people would enjoy the property.” What they got was a whole lot more. The Pines was booked solid from May to November. The following June, it was featured in USA Today’s 10 Best list of glamping sites in New England. Recently, they’ve added a second site, The Ferns.

Leave the sleeping bags rolled up at home – each tent has a bed complete with bedding. Other amenities include cooking pans, outdoor seating, and use of a canoe.

The property – which abuts the 295-acre Maxwell Mays Audubon Refuge – features a pond, streams, and open fields. Guests at Glamp Frogmore have many activity options: hiking on a private trail, canoeing (or row boating), playing horseshoes, or just relaxing in the Adirondack chairs overlooking the picturesque pond. Some guests take day trips to the beach or visit parts of South County.

Both sites boast large canvas tents on wooden platforms outfitted with beds, pillows, and linens. Glampers will also find firewood, fire starters, cooking pans, and utensils. Additional options include a second pop-up tent, as well as a menu with

items like fresh-baked muffins, a thermos of hot chocolate, pot of chili, stocked cooler, and more delivered to guests. There’s a private outhouse and an antique copper basin with a foot pump-operated sink. And there’s also a solar shower just a short walk

Damage Repair When I was a beauty editor at a national magazine, it was my job to be a skincare devotee. Lotions and potions filled my bathroom and semi-regular facials were the norm. But a career change, family obligations, and hustle-culture overwhelm supplanted my lengthy (not to mention expensive) skincare regimen. Added environmental and physical stress took a heavy toll on my already sensitive skin. So when Exquisite Skin Care owner and esthetician Angela Pisoni-Bartley invited me to try out a facial at her charming skin studio at The Pier in Narragansett, I jumped at the opportunity to face my neglected… well… face. Pisoni-Bartley is originally from Oregon and relocated to Rhode Island with her Rhody-born husband. After setting up shop in Jamestown in 2018, she moved to her Narragansett location in the spring of 2021, in the middle of the pandemic. With loyal clients willing to trek over the bridge, COVID or not, it didn’t take long for the new space to thrive. Walking into her light and airy skin care studio, you understand why. The beachchic interior invites you to leave the stress of the day at the door. But stepping into the well-appointed treatment room, with its candle lighting and soothing spa music, is like being wrapped in a cocoon of wellness. It’s evident that Pisoni-Bartley received her training in holistic skincare, which focuses on using natural ingredients rather than cosmetic intervention to nourish the skin. After changing into a spa wrap and sliding under the covers of the heated facial table, Pisoni-Bartley took a better look at my exhausted skin. An eruption of rosacea under my left eye left my skin splotchy and irritated. Since I hadn’t properly exfoliated in months, my face was a riot of textures. Pisoni-Bartley’s known for her popular summer treatment, a sea salt microdermabrasion facial, which includes an oxygen infusion. Even though the sea salt exfoliation is gentle, Pisoni-Bartley took

one look at my overstressed face and decided it was too much treatment for my hyper-reactive skin. She suggested a hydrating facial to calm my aggravated dermis. Exquisite Skin Care works exclusively with Eminence Organics, a Hungarian skincare line that I previously avoided because I worried their product would be too strong for my skin. (Pro-tip: just because a product is sourced from natural ingredients, doesn’t mean it’s gentle, especially for reactive skin.)

After her careful assessment, she matched my stressed skin with two of their lines: Stone Crop and Calm Skin. My parched skin soaked up so much of the Stone Crop gel cleanser, I fear I emptied her bottle, since she had to keep applying the product. After a thorough cleansing, she assessed my skin one more time to make sure we were on the correct treatment path. She recommended adding red light therapy to the treatment protocol. The low-level LEDs

help soothe angry skin, like mine, while also encouraging collagen production. With the course of treatment solidified, an exfoliation followed. For this, she mixed Calm Skin Cleanser with Eminence’s Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant. This powder uses rice for a gentle physical exfoliant as well as with both lactic and salicylic acid – two chemical exfoliants – to slough off dead skin cells, leaving a buff base ready to soak up the coming nutraceuticals.

Mothers of the bride & groom require an appointment |

After a spritz with Stone Crop’s hydrating mist, it was time for another cleanse, this time using the Stone Crop Cleansing Oil under a hydrating mist of steam. She used a Skin Buddy, another device that uses LED technology, to work the oil into my skin. Extractions followed. My face was so well prepped and her hands so gentle, those were barely perceptible. Once extractions were over, it was time for the mask. Again, Pisoni-Bartley combined products for my personalized treatment protocol. While the mask soaked in, she gave me a soothing scalp, neck, and shoulder massage that practically melted me into the treatment table. After removing the mask, it was time for the red light therapy. While that worked to revitalize my skin, Pisoni-Bartley revitalized my feet with a trigger point massage. By the time she slathered me in Calm Skin Serum and Moisturizer, I was a noodle. More importantly, my dull, fragile skin was positively glowing. Between the serenity of the skin studio’s ocean-side space and my coddled skin, I can’t wait to return to Pisoni-Bartley’s treatment room.

MORE THAN CREPES This sweet cafe in Kingston doubles as a health hot spot with something for everyone Comfort food takes the shape of super thin pancakes at ChocoLoco, Kingston’s newest creperie and waffle bar, where these French delicacies can be found stuffed with everything from Nutella to cheesecake filling, and even savory Mediterranean flavors. “Since my childhood – which I spent most of in Lebanon – crepes have always been my favorite,” shares owner Joseph Tohme. “I moved to France and I fell even more in love with them.” Tohme brings his travels and many years of experience in the food industry to this Kingston Emporium cafe – a destination for those with a sweet tooth. Crowd pleasers include Honey Apple Pie crepes (with warm apples and Cinnamon Toast Crunch), the inventive Chocoloco “Fettuccine” served sliced into ribbons with three types of chocolate, and Waffle Ice Cream Sandwiches, which is as decadent as the name suggests. Served alongside these indulgences is plenty of fare for the health conscious, too, like cold pressed juices – a favorite among URI students – with immunity and antioxidant boosts. Acai bowls are all made with almond or coconut milk and come in plenty of colorful, fruit-forward varieties. “You can always add a vegan protein scoop, flax seeds, hemp seeds, and chia seeds for even more nutrients,” says Tohme. Gluten-free diet? There’s plenty of crepe options for that, too. Having opened this spring, Tohme shares ChocoLoco faced its fair share of challenges, from inventory shortages to staffing, but never compromised their dedication to quality and creative offerings. With plans to roll out a catering menu soon, he notes, “so far we have been blessed.” ChocoLocoRI.com | By Abbie Lahmers Photo courtesy of ChocoLoco

went out, one came back. But we were determined to get it right.” There might have been a learning curve, but it was one they gamely took on. It was important to them that the food coming out of the kitchen was scratch made. Enormous muffins – including staples like corn and blueberry, as well as seasonal specials like strawberry – are the first thing to go in the oven when Carlos arrives in the morning. Brisket is slow-cooked daily for their homemade corn beef hash. Hollandaise sauce is whipped up from scratch. Even the fruit salad is cut fresh from their daily delivery from Belmont Market. “We didn’t want to do the same food as everyone else,” says Taveira. “You can get bacon and eggs at any diner. We wanted to do something special, unexpected.” Indeed, the breakfast menu shines with creative flourishes in items like Oreo cookie pancakes and cinnamon apple French toast. On the savory side, their Portuguese benedict features a Mozambique hollandaise

“The only thing we argued about were the potatoes,” says Paula Taveira, who with her husband Carlos, took ownership of Rachel’s Cafe in South County Commons in February of 2020. “I wanted to use the frozen ones – I love them.” She chuckles. “But he insisted on hand-cut.” Carlos won the argument and, after a lot of trial and error (it turns out low-sugar content potatoes are the key to giving fries their beautiful golden hue), Rachel’s Cafe features the hand-cut ones. But it’s not just the fries. All menu items at Rachel’s are fresh; there’s nothing frozen or from a can. The entrepreneurial couple were looking for something to keep them busy in retirement. Carlos had worked slinging hash in breakfast joints as a teen, so purchasing the cafe felt like a natural fit. But it was a bit of trial-by-fire, with Carlos struggling to find his groove in the kitchen at the beginning. “Our reviews early on weren’t great,” Taveira concedes. “Every four dishes that

sauce and even their avocado toast is elevated with gorgonzola cheese, a fried egg, and a honey drizzle. While they were finding their sea legs, COVID hit and the new restaurateurs were facing an uncertain future. “We were looking at each other like, oh my God, what did we just do?” recalls Taveira. But when restaurants were allowed to open two months later, they offered take out. More trial and error followed, and with breakfast a bust for to-go orders, they pivoted to lunch and dinner instead, working later hours and leaning into their Portuguese heritage focusing on seafood specialties. County Commons really came out and supported them, with the Taveiras hand delivering food to people who were quarantined in their apartments. “Apparently we were the talk of the dog park,” Taveira says with a chuckle. The Taveiras are looking forward to welcoming back their seasonal regulars along with the summer sun. But, like other restaurants, the staffing shortage has them going into South County’s busy season with one less line cook in the kitchen, so they ask for patience from their customers while they try to navigate it all. “We want people to leave here happy,” she says. On a Roll Find something between two buns for everyone at this food truck popping up at SoCo breweries (or, truck) last spring with the goal of serving affordable, farm-fresh bites around the state. They’ve since gained followers parking at places like Proclamation Ale Company in Warwick, Tilted Barn Brewery in Exeter, and The Fantastic Umbrella Factory in Charlestown, along with farmers markets and private events. Two vegetarians walk up to a sandwich truck may sound like the beginning of a bad joke, but Sahady was quick to point us to two great options, including one named after her, the Sahady So Hotty, and their rotating special, the Swiss Chard (hold the meat). Of course, we also went for a round of hand-cut fries with housemade garlic aioli. We were given buzzers to let us know when our food was ready so we could go back to enjoying the brewery while we waited. It wasn’t long before mom and I were digging into hot sammies. The Swiss Chard special was made with perfectly crunchy sourdough and oozing with gooey cheddar, which nicely

For those who haven’t quite caught on to the food truck hype, I’m here to tell you – it’s time. A recent visit to ButterHead Sandwich Co. proved that unique, thoughtful, flavor-packed fare can be served out of a 120-square-foot metal box, and in prime South County locations too, like West Kingston’s Shaidzon tasting room. Shaidzon is located, as they quote on their wall, “where Proclamation used to be,” a stone’s throw from the Amtrak station. The indoor tasting room offers a small bar with a variety of their brews on tap. We grabbed two Aunt Carrie’s, a light and tasty pale ale named for the beloved seafood eatery and headed to the outside patio area that stretches from the brewery to the train tracks. Visiting with my mom on a foggy Friday afternoon, we claimed a picnic table close to ButterHead’s parked truck. I’d heard great things about ButterHead from friends who enjoyed them at Whalers, so I was already excited for their fries and aioli. Matthew Brown and Freida Sahady opened up shop

complemented the subtly sweet taste of freshly cooked swiss chard. Typically made with seared chicken thigh and bacon, I imagine the omnivore version is even more elevated. The Sahady So Hotty was just as its namesake sandwich artist described: “creamy and cheesy in the best way possible.” Served on a sesame bun, it was stuffed with salty yet mild halloumi (a semi-hard cheese with a high melting point, making it ideal for grilling without losing its form), arugula, and pickled red onions. On one bun was a smooth and savory baba ganoush, the other a creamy and tangy whipped feta, all flavored with the herby goodness of chermoula. Not only was it creamy and cheesy, but also messy in the best way possible – the type of sandwich that has you soaking up every drop of sauce with your fries. As a vegetarian, meatless options often feel like an afterthought – not so at ButterHead. We even ordered a second Sahady So Hotty to go. Before heading out, a friend stopped by our table to rave about her Smash Burger with bacon, which she said had a nice smoky saltiness to the bacon that went great with a cold beer. Leaving Shaidzon delightfully full, we stopped by to thank Sahady and Brown, who shared they were having a great season so far working alongside many family and friends. ButterHead truly offers the best of both worlds: a restaurant-quality experience and an excuse (as if we needed one) to visit favorite South County breweries.

New food hub opens in Wakefield

A grab-and-go sandwich from The Beach Rose Cafe

Town Made Kitchen, a new commercial kitchen concept created by Green Line Apothecary owners Ken and Christina Procaccianti, recently opened on Main Street in Wakefield. As makers themselves – Green Line has their own house-made ice cream brand – the Procacciantis went on the hunt for a commercial kitchen. When the pharmacy moved to their new headquarters at 245 Main Street, they decided to turn the old location into a commercial food hub, where locals can get rotating offerings of varied cuisines from different makers. “We wanted to create a collaborative, flexible, turn-key operation for other entrepreneurs to start their businesses,” says Ken. The Town Made team assists the fledgling businesses with things from packaging to payment systems and also helps with marketing. “Christina and I know how hard it is to start a small business,” he says. “We’re successful if the entrepreneurs grow their business to a point where they can leave.” Wakefield, TownMade.com

New Charlestown cafe with health-focused nosh “I have way too much energy and needed another project,” jokes Marie Christine Case, who opened The Beach Rose Cafe in Charlestown in June with her daughter, Paula DiLullo, and son-in-law, Daniel Gay. “This is happening straight up because of them,” she says of her trained chef son-inlaw and her daughter who keeps the business humming. “They turned my idea into something viable.” A South County Adventure Boot Camp fitness devotee, Case’s idea was to open

a small cafe that had healthy alternatives but were also convenient to grab-and-go, “items that give you fuel,” she explains. Their signature Breakfast Bites are portable energy bombs filled with protein and healthy carbs from Gay’s propriety flour blend. Fresh veggies from farms like Sweet Pea and a special Beach Rose Blend coffee from Sea Worthy keeps the focus local. Everything on the menu is scratch made and “nutritional, beautiful, flavor packed things.” Charlestown, TheBeachRoseCafe.com

“I can’t say I’ve had a dull moment in six months,” says Jigger’s Diner owner and chef Karie Myers. Back in January, The Talk whisked her to LA for a pancake cook-off, where an eggless twist on her Johnnycake benedict recipe took top honors on the CBS chat show. In February, she spotted an expansion opportunity for Jigger’s, the classic Worcester Dining Car Company centerpiece on Main Street in East Greenwich. Jigger’s South, located at the Hamilton Village Inn, is her new venture on Boston Neck Road in North Kingstown. With a three-season porch, an expansive yard for picnic tables, plus a steady stream of beach goers, Myers saw an opportunity to create a local food maker-focused cafe and elevated clam shack. With local produce and proteins used for Jigger’s faves, the restaurant features Rhody-grown hot sauces, sodas, as well as cocktails, beer, and wine. North Kingstown, JiggersDiner.com
