Transport is in their blood TRADITION: Brian and grandson Jai Canny with Canny Carrying Co trucks from different eras.

BY SIMONE KERWIN

B

RIAN Canny always knew he would follow in the footsteps of grandfather Bill and father Len, by entering the family’s carrying business. “I was truck mad – I’ve watched trucks all my life,” he said. Brian remembers “plain as day” the years when the company, established as W Canny and Sons by Bill Canny in 1905, relied on horse drawn vehicles. “Then as a kid, I used to go in the furniture vans with the drivers, first to Melbourne, then Adelaide and Queensland after we got the bigger trucks,” he said. “It’s just something that’s in your

blood when you’ve been around it all your life.” Brian, who joined the company as a 15 year old in 1945, began by driving those furniture vans he had travelled in as a youngster. He was manager of the Melbourne depot from 1972 to ’97, travelling home to Wangaratta each weekend to see wife Anne and his five children. In 2007, his career and commitment to the local company, which is one of the oldest carrying firms in Victoria, saw him admitted to the National Road Transport Hall of Fame. Now 82, and with sons Rodney and Greg and grandchildren Jai and Kayla involved in the business, Brian said the longevity of the company

was a great source of pride. “We still have a lot of our old customers, including Brown Brothers and Bruck Textiles,” he said. “The big companies are creeping in, but it hasn’t affected us yet – we’re still very competitive. Canny Carrying Co has grown from those early days of two horsedrawn vehicles to an operation involving 50 trucks and employing 70 people. Brian said the fact many were long-time employees also spoke volumes for the company. “We don’t have many people who come and go,” he said. “We have a few drivers who have been with us for 20 years, and quite a few have 10 to 15 years service.

PHOTO: Cheryl Browne

“We must be alright to work for.” Like the Kenworth trucks the company has used for the past 20 years, including two new side loaders, Brian said the company was based on an ethos of reliability. “If you say you’re going to do something, you do it,” he said. The Canny name is synonymous with Wangaratta, and the business has lent its support over many years to local football and basketball clubs. “It puts your name in front of the public,” Brian said. And for local travellers who spot that familiar logo on the roads, it can be like seeing a piece of home - the district where the 107 year old firm still holds a prominent place, and should well into the future.

HE Ovens Riverside Precinct is a $3.3 million dollar government infrastructure project which will benefit our local economy. Add that project to the $25 million CoStore development, and we can see that the level of investment in the Rural City of Wangaratta over the next couple of years looks to be very healthy. This demonstrates a level of confidence in our economic future, but it also delivers that health, by injecting dollars locally, providing jobs and prosperity for the community. The clincher is then to attempt to keep the cash circulating locally for as long as possible. The Wangaratta Retail Audit and Development Plan Review conducted in 2008 revealed some interesting facts about where we spend our money. Firstly, household expenditure was broken down into three groups; food, grocery and liquor, household goods expenditure and bulky goods expenditure. As expected, most food, grocery and liquor expenditure is within Wangaratta. However, only 70 per cent of household goods are purchased from our local traders. The household goods category includes shoes, clothing, and other household items. The rate of local purchase drops even further when we look at the bulky goods category where 40 per cent of all purchases are made elsewhere. This ‘leaked’ expenditure equates to approximately $152 million dollars per annum. Imagine if we could increase our local spend by just 10 per cent. That would bring an extra $15.2 million dollars into our economy locally. An increase of this magnitude increases business across the board – leading to additional employment opportunities and more money flowing through the ‘system’. So next time you’re thinking of shooting to a nearby city for a shopping fix, check yourself - could you spend in Wangaratta and get what you want? Remember – what goes around comes around.

TESTIMONIAL Mount Hotham Skiing Company - Veronique Boardman (Ticket Sales) During my time with Mount Hotham Skiing Company I have found Pinkerton Security a professional company yet they come across as a family business and all their workers cannot spend enough time explaining all aspects of our security set up. They take pride in their work and this comes across with all my dealings over the 10 years I’ve dealt with them. Our concerns are their concerns. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
