Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2020 - 5
The First Word WE are very proud that the Snowy Mountains Magazine covers and promotes a wide region, one that we have travelled hundreds of times attending events on all sides of the mountains, meeting people in various towns and of course talk with our valued advertisers. So, it has been extremely sad to see the damage that the recent bushfires have caused many of our friends and mountain townsfolk. As we look ahead to the autumn season our thoughts are still with all the people who have experienced great loss and the hundreds of businesses affected in so many ways. It becomes a ripple down effect for families plus staff of businesses affected with less hours or perhaps even losing work entirely. This eventually disseminates into the towns themselves as people simply cannot afford what they normally could. Most of the region relies on tourists and industry. Visitors have been scarce and main industries such as forestry and logging are heavily affected. Key forests have burnt and their future unpredictable. From the towns that experienced direct fire to other towns where tourists were asked to leave and have since stayed
away. Everyone has their own individual story but, in the end, they have the same issue. Their livelihood in one way or another has been severely impacted and everyone is hurting. Through this hardship and tragedy though, you have to admire the mountain resilience where even though you know certain people have suffered, they bravely say we will rebuild, fight on, persevere and just get on with the job at hand. During these tough times we have seen community members stand up to help where needed. In recent months there have been many and each town thanks them enormously for their valued efforts. And what superlatives are left to describe how all emergency services have braved dangerous conditions to save families, homes, towns and key infrastructure. The Rural Fire Service and visiting Fire and Rescue teams an extra special mention. Now that most of the key roads have opened and the bushfires quietened, the rebuilding and recovery phase will kick into gear for the coming months and years. There is a lot to be done and many people to help. In this edition we make no apologies for appealing on several occasions in

Modifications For Next Warby Trial By STEVE CUFF IN his quest to break the world water speed record his father set in 1978, Dave Warby and his team have made alterations to the Spirit of Australia II boat. Last August Dave reached a speed of 407kmh at Tumut’s Blowering Dam, still nowhere Ken Warby’s long standing record of 511.11 kmh. After that trial the team decided to make modifications to ensure the safety of the boat as they strive for the record. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Snowy Mountains Magazine in February, Dave said they have studied the aerodynamics of the boat with the help of Newcastle University and will change the tail plane section of the boat. “We wanted to put a horizontal T tail plane on the back like what Dad had, but we really needed to get up to over 200mph to figure out what we needed in the tail plane, not just copy Dads,” said Dave. “We are at speeds now where it is all to do with aerodynamics of the boat, we are working on the aerodynamic pressure on top of the boat, but also it is a safety thing, it’s more keeping the boat
planted on the water basically.” “We got some really good footage from 60 minutes to give us some close up footage of what the boat’s like, and that related into the feel of driving it, so that’s when we made the modifications. You think if that’s like that at 400 ks I’ve got to make some modifications so it’s not like that at 500 ks. “But it’s a costly exercise to put a tail plane on a boat, so we wanted to wait until we really need one and know what we needed to develop it. It is probably nudging $50,000 to get the whole lot done. You have to get it made from an aircraft engineer, so it’s not something we can necessarily build ourselves.” Dave thinks it should only be a few runs to get the feel of the new changes and they can also make precise adjustments to the tail plane in between runs. “Is it going to do anything different going from two to three, four hundred k’s, is it going to handle any differently. I mean probably not as far as the boat moving around and doing something wrong. But you just don’t take the risk.” The team has been all about safety from the beginning and Dave suggested they are at about 80% of where they want to be.
◼

The refinements are a measure to ensure more safety but also to make it easier to drive at over 500 kilometres. “We are just not taking anything for granted, you are at the speeds now if something goes wrong then it’s all over. That is why it took Dad over three years to

get his record, he just gradually built it up and analysed the boat.” Team Warby are hoping to return to Tumut’s Blowering Dam in April but will still need more trials before they attempt the record. Ken Warby will return from the United States only for the record attempt.

THE recent bushfires have heavily impacted the south east of NSW with people losing their lives, property destroyed, communities shaken and some businesses struggling to stay afloat even once the smoke has finally cleared. The wider Snowy Mountains region have not been spared and no matter what town you scrutinise, they have all seen devastation in some form or another. Whether it be actual fire damage, lost income through tourist evacuation notices, or people suffering with their own personal traumas, either way it is heart breaking to realise the toll this summer has bestowed upon us. There have been many detailed words written elsewhere about the fires and the bravery of Rural Fire Services trying to help our communities. Here we give you a snapshot of the towns and how you can help. Fires have ripped through the towns of Batlow and Tumbarumba, isolated the township of Khancoban and fire crews dramatically saved the Tumut 3 Power Station and Talbingo. The surrounding areas of Adelong and Tumut were impacted. Selwyn Snow Resort was destroyed and the Snowy Hydro town of Cabramurra lost substantial property which will have ongoing implications for the small town of Adaminaby through loss of winter visitation. Adaminaby itself was under fire threat for an extended period. Just when you think it might be easing, fire south of Canberra has a wind shift and Bredbo and Michelago and their
surrounding communities are under attack with property loss. To the east, Jerangle and Numeralla seemed to be continually battling blazes and in the south of the Monaro near Bombala several properties were burnt as fires joined from the coast. The popular tourist towns of Thredbo and Jindabyne and the corridor of Berridale and Cooma were not burnt, but when the tourists were told to evacuate Jindabyne and Thredbo was totally evacuated and closed, even to residences, it took a different toll with businesses taking a massive financial hit. With no tourists this heavily impacts Berridale and Cooma. Across the region the busiest weeks of the summer tourist trade were gone ripping out tens of millions of dollars from the local economy. Now it’s time for the recovery, and after driving through the region some weeks after the main fires, it is evident the enormous scale of devastation. On following pages, we have more town specific stories, but nothing is a simple fix. We must all batten the hatches and support each other as best we can. Brad Spalding, General Manager of Lake Crackenback Resort, Anthony Cleary and Susie Diver of Red Hat Communications are contemplating how to react to the scenario. There are no tourists, local business owners are stressed, staff have less hours or no work and it seems like in these early stages no one is doing anything. So they devise a plan. With an outstretched arm of friendship “Shake Hands with the Snowies” will show visitors to the region we
appreciate the support. Brad Spalding said, “it was a grassroots idea to tell people we were open for business.” The group said that other regions were all asking people to come back, and they hoped by personalising it with “shake hands” it could differentiate the snowies region. “We have a lot to be thankful for and we really want to reach out and welcome visitors to our area. We are fully stocked with mountain hospitality and would love to
see visitors here” said Brad Spalding. They have also organised the Beccy Cole fundraiser (see page 9) where all proceeds will be distributed to the Tumut Foundation and Laoko. Rather than give to the bigger organisations they wanted to help their friends on the western side of the mountains. The Community Foundation for Tumut Region is a registered charity that has been instrumental in organising the Dunn’s Road Appeal. Funds from the foundation will be distributed to eligible residents in the form of vouchers/gift cards for goods and services from local businesses from Tumbarumba to Tumut, this includes Batlow and Adelong and roadside stalls with EFTPOS. The funds will not be accessed until the end of April in the hope the Appeal will continue to attract further donors which equals more for the eligible recipients. If you would like to support this region with a donation, the Tumut Foundation is a good starting point, or better still just visit and buy produce and goods and stay a while. About that same time Shake Hands with the Snowies was introduced, the Empty Esky movement originated and then the Holiday Here This Year campaign. The most recent has been Now’s The Time To Love NSW by Destination NSW. Each campaign has one goal, and that is to drive people predominately from the big

cities to think local and support country regions that have been devastated. That traction was evident at the recent Tumbarumba races in February where it was pleasing to speak with one small group of friends who travelled from Melbourne and Canberra and just wanted to support an area after hearing of the plight. The Snowy Mountains region needs everyone’s help, and it starts internally with residents who are urged to buy everything local. For tourists who are considering where to visit, we have many stories and suggestions in this edition. We also ask that you bring your friends an attend an event, an attraction or just enjoy some good mountain hospitality.

Bushfires Impact Northern Kosciuszko By STEVE CUFF THE bushfires that swept through northern Kosciuszko National Park in early January have been devastating, leaving Selwyn Snow Resort destroyed, Cabramurra losing significant housing and the historical Kiandra precinct in utter ruins. The Blyton Group, owner of Selwyn Snow Resort advised in early February that due to the extent of the damage sustained the resort would not be open for the 2020 season. An initial assessment of critical resort infrastructure has identified extensive damage to buildings, power, water, sewerage and snowmaking. Selwyn Snow Resort has been advised that restoration of power alone will take several months. Preparations for the clean-up of the
site are underway with demolition of all buildings required, as well as the removal of destroyed resort machinery. Detailed assessment of lifting and snowmaking infrastructure will continue to be undertaken, requiring portable generators to be brought on-site. “We have considered a range of options to try and resume operations for this coming winter, however the damage to critical infrastructure is simply too extensive to make this possible,” said Kevin James Blyton, Chairman of the Blyton Group. Mr Blyton said they are “totally focused on the rebuild of Selwyn Snow Resort” with the resort looking to resume operations in 2021. The Snowy Hydro township of Cabramurra was also significantly damaged with the company stating, “Sadly 36 houses were destroyed in the

4 January fire, along with several of the unit blocks, the school, the old ski club, and the Edinburgh Cottage where many members of the Royal family, including the Queen have stayed.” “The main buildings housing the bistro and general store, the fuel depot and other buildings are all standing and will be a great base to rebuild from. Cabramurra is an important part of Snowy’s history and we’re already working on plans to rebuild the town. We plan to use the latest fire resistant building technologies to help the town withstand future bushfire threats.” The historical Kiandra precinct has been obliterated with only the brick work surviving the fire onslaught and stone chimneys standing isolated. On the drive from Adaminaby there is a trail of burnt high country huts including Delaney, Sawyers Rest House, Wolgal, Pattison’s Hut, Mathews and

the Kiandra Courthouse. There have also been other significant huts lost including Bradleys and O’Briens, Round Mountain and 4 Mile. Fire has been an ongoing enemy at Kiandra over decades, with many of the signposts indicating previous fires destroying much of this historic precinct. After the 2003 fires many of the huts were rebuilt, which will be a likely scenario again. At Yarrangobilly Caves, heroic feats of 36 hours of fire fighting by NPWS staff has saved the historic buildings in this precinct, including the heritage listed Caves House. NEXT DOOR TO BIRCHWOOD CAFE
Winery Cellar Doors Open WITH their elevation and mountain location Tumbarumba have gained enormous accolades for their cool climate wine. In recent years they have gained momentum and exposure in both their wine and tourism, the cellar doors attracting many people. In the past month the town has suffered a setback through the recent bushfires which threatened and burnt not only wineries, but much of the surrounding region. Tumbarumba are now in a fight to reestablish themselves and as with other towns really need people to return and visit their attractions. The town has not burnt but one of the attractions Sugar Pine Walk has been damaged and discussion now engaged on its future. The great news is cellar doors have reopened. Courabyra Wines Cathy Gairn explained how close fire came to their actual property which sounded harrowing. They had some vineyard area damaged but are now open for the autumn and their new deck is looking primed for visitors to sample wine and superb food. Cathy has just added to Courabyra’s awards, the cellar door being “Recommended” on the Restaurant Guru

2019 list, plus a regional winner again of the Australian Good Food Guide readers’ choice. They have won this award for six consecutive years. “It is very exciting to know the hard work is paying off and that people still love to come here and eat our food, and it is the first time we have picked up the Restaurant Guru award,” said Cathy. Obsession Wines Adrian Brayne lost much of his vineyards in the fires and launched an online campaign to sell wine he had bottled in the winery. You can now purchase wines from next door at Braymont Gardens. Take a tour of these magnificent grounds while you are there. “I’m running on generator power but thanks to all the support and kindness of people we are able to start getting your wine orders out. It will take Matt and myself some time to get through it all as they keep coming in, but it feels so good to start,” said Adrian after the fires. Johansen Wines also took a setback losing several paddocks and are now rebuilding. Their cellar door was not damaged and is open on weekends. They offered their thanks to all the friends and sponsors who helped purchase new posts and wine online.

New Rail Trail - Tumbarumba to Rosewood LOOKING back now, the $5 million invested into the first NSW Government funded rail trail project might just be the best money spent to reignite Tumbarumba tourism. With the recent bushfire damaging the Sugar Pines walk, this new Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail (TRRT) will be a massive drawcard and a great attraction for the region and towns directly involved. It officially opens on Friday 3 April. People will travel to experience the rail trail and the tourist dollar is what is desperately needed. Plus, it will be a great addition for local families and cyclists. The 22km undulating rail trail follows the old railway line corridor, one that witnessed the first train from Wagga Wagga to Tumbarumba, via Rosewood in March 1921. The pilot rail trail was approved by the State Government in 2015. The ride is expected to be an exciting adventure with much history visible along the route. The bridge contractors Timber Restoration Systems have been working extensively on restoring four timber trestle bridges and the route has seven stock overpass crossings. With only a small elevation rise of 150m the trail will be suitable for all levels.
Volunteers have also been working on historic information to be placed along the route for riders to stop and absorb the history including six recovered and restored railway gates. There will be memorabilia rail items added. “The TRRT committee would like to acknowledge, and is most appreciative of many organisations and individual volunteers in the development of this rail trail especially the Tumbarumba Historical Society, the Tumbarumba Men’s Shed, the Tumbarumba Garden Club and Friends of the TRRT,” said Own Fitzgerald. “The Riverina Highlands Rail Trails (RHRT) committee has also been the catalyst and a leading light for the project. Our previous Tumbarumba Shire Council and now Snowy Valleys Council are also to be congratulated for their support.” Owen said they see the future of the Rail Trail to be a huge drawcard for cyclists, walkers, families and anyone who is a rail enthusiast. It also suitable for cycling events, marathons/half-marathons and triathlon events. “And we’re not stopping there: next up an extension of the Rail Trail to Tarcutta as well as the development of the Batlow to Tumut trail”.
◼
FUN: The new rail trail will open in April. PHOTO: Peter McDade.
Everyone is invited for the official opening and then to ride the trail. There will be shuttle buses to bring people back from Rosewood for the opening days. You can stay tuned at www.facebook. com/tumbarumbarailtrail/ for updates.

Visit Picturesque
Khancoban By STEVE CUFF TAKE another look at this photo and I am sure you will agree it is a wonderful looking setting, one where you might want to consider visiting yourself one day. The picture of a kayaker on Khancoban Pondage just cruising along reflects the relaxed nature of the town. Our cover is also from the same location. That is the feeling you get when you visit what can only be described as a mother nature retreat and a town that really flies under the radar. You the reader can help change this and experience Khancoban yourself with a journey to the western side of the Snowy Mountains on the Alpine Way. At times like now you can only feel for businesses in this small town. In recent months they have been virtually isolated by road closures and bushfires. The fires threatened all around, but the town ended
up being safe. When new owners Debbie and Tony bought the Khancoban Lakeside Caravan Park business last year little they know what was in store for them. This idyllic setting by the lake is the perfect location to explore Khancoban, but Tony said it has been tough. “A complete right off” was how he described January. “We were evacuated on the 3rd of January and let back in on the 11th January as residences. And we had no tourist activity until just before the Australia Day.” With the Alpine Way closed until February 18, the town had virtually no visitation at all. The popular driving route is key for Khancoban, even if it is just for stop overs for food on a journey to either Thredbo or passing traffic west to Corryong. Tony said “Big time” when asked was it a relief the road was opened. “A very big relief as we are now getting
a bit of through traffic, otherwise we are pretty much a dead end and people just don’t come out. We missed all the motor bikes, it has been tough.” The caravan park like all other businesses are now hoping autumn is a good season. They have some events in coming months but also just hope people will visit them. Tony said the Towong race meeting with the historical grandstand is one attraction they have accommodation for. “The Man from Snowy River Festival, we get an overflow of that from Corryong. Look that’s more accommodation and the others in town like the hotel don’t make as much out of it.” Bookings at the caravan park are good for Easter but “we still have the cabins that book out closer to the time,” Tony pointed out. “December and January is our big caravan trade, and we lost all of our January’s caravan trade.”
He said people are starting to come back. “It’s amazing how people are just are coming out for the weekend, they are not bringing any food and they are eating in town, which is nice.” “We just need to keep it kicking over for the rest of the year because it will take a bit of time to recover from the old January. “Look, we still have a caravan park so we are lucky in that way, but yeah it has hurt for the first year, we weren’t planning that for our first year of trade, that’s for sure.” See our map on page 26 to plan this autumn or visit the caravan park website at www.klcp.com.au where you can see their great amenities other parks would be more than proud to own. The town has the roadhouse for fuel and food on the Alpine Way, in town a cafe, chemist and post office that sells gifts plus the National Parks Office. The Khancoban Alpine Inn also has accommodation, nice cold beer and the kitchen serves up great lunches and dinner.

BATLOW CIDERFEST
Batlow Big Apple Festival WHEN the question was asked of the Batlow town folk, should they proceed with the 2020 CiderFest event after their well-publicised bushfire hardships, the answer was a resounding yes. While the bushfires were a difficult time for the town, the best way forward was to soldier on and show just how resilient Batlow residents are. For this small apple growing town CiderFest is the highlight of their calendar. This year’s event is sure to be one of the biggest on record, one which is much needed for the town. Organisers are planning to cater for an extended crowd of over 7000.
◼ FRIENDS. Join the Empty Esky brigade and socialise with friends.
For visitors it is an even bigger highlight where the apple festivities combine fantastic street party atmosphere on the closed Pioneer Street. Music, laughter, numerous apple products, cider of course and even fancy dress have seen revelers return every year for this joyous occasion. Event organiser Ray Billing said, “In the aftermath of recent bushfires, community members are “excidered” that Batlow CiderFest brings friends, family and visitors together for a spectacular street party amid autumn splendor.” If you have never been “excidered”, this is the perfect year to visit for the experience. CiderFest attendees will be surprised and delighted by unusual displays, costumed characters, delicious food choices and great entertainment that bursts out of two stages and at times spills over into street theatre. A large range of Australian and local craft ciders, local craft beers and local wines freshen the palate to enjoy an intriguing assortment of gourmet food. Bring an “Empty Esky” and enjoy stocking it with a take-home bounty of home apple pies, chutneys, jams, chestnuts, honey, along your chosen ciders, beers and wines. The town has limited accommodation,

Trails at All Time Prime By GINA WOODWARD FROM the Jindabyne Mill Creek trails in the Tyrolean area and Hatchery Bay near the lake, to Lake Crackenback, Bungarra’s flow trail and pump track (only open on weekends), and the Mt Gladstone trail network at Cooma, the trails are at ‘their all-time prime’ says Jo Larkin. Riding here for 20 years, Jo said she is so impressed with the current quality of the trails, and how well they are riding post rain in February. For those heading here to ride, Jo highlights that “There is a really big community of mountain bikers in Jindabyne so there is always something available for our visitors to jump in on, be it clinics, private lessons or with guides who can show you the trails. Visitors to the area should ask at the local bike stores for maps, jump onto www.trailforks.com or download the app to find all the legal trails around the region. Mountain bikes and E-bikes are available for hire too at numerous shops. Easier trails for family rides with newer or young riders can be found at Friday
Flat in Thredbo, at Lake Crackenback Resort or around Lake Jindabyne on the Hatchery Bay trail. The local trails outside of the national park are maintained by the committed and generous volunteers from Jindabyne Trail Stewardship. The group hold trail maintenance days plus monthly meetings to sort out issues and prevent others from occurring. The same happens in Cooma, with the local mountain bike club doing this for their trails. Larkin notes, “An advantage of this area is that there is a lot of trail maintenance. The Thredbo crew plus volunteers in Jindabyne and Cooma are constantly manicuring trails. The stewardship group is also involved in developing the planning of more bike and trail infrastructure, together with support from local businesses and community members. Local Carol Hockings says she loves riding here because of the scenery and the availability. On hot days she loves the swimming spots along the Hatchery Bay trail, whilst her hot tip is that on windy days, Mill Creek is always a good option because the trails are protected.

SCENERY: Mountain bike riding along the shore of Lake Jindabyne.
Carol said, “I’m 62 and retired which is a bonus as I can go whenever I feel like it. We are so lucky to have some great riding at our doorstep. Larkin says Mill Creek trails offer everything in such a small network - you can go for hours and get a really varied trail ride in. “It’s the town’s special network of trails. Around the region there are also bike friendly accommodations with lockup storage, bike wash and repair areas, and of course, laundry facilities. Some lodges have said their bookings out of winter are increasing, fuelled by the appeal of mountain biking in the region. It’s great
to see winter visitors returning to take on the trails in the ‘green’ season. There are a swag of retreats and clinics focussed on cycling that are held in the months outside of winter. Look out for event listings from groups such as Dirt Frills and Skills, Jindy Groms, Bike Betty, and the Jindabyne Girl Riders. Keep your eyes out for the first Bike Betty Jindabyne retreat coming up soon. The Snowy Mountains is truly a mountain biking mecca and definitely worth many visits to ride and explore. It’s only growing and the future for the region’s riding certainly looks good.

Take On The TVT By GINA WOODWARD THE region’s iconic Thredbo Valley Track (TVT) mountain bike trail was recently extended and has been met with great applause from riders near and far. If you haven’t experienced it yet, put it on your MTB bucket list as a must do. Commencing in Thredbo, the 17km Upper TVT winds through the Thredbo Valley on mainly single track, over five bridges and through forests adjacent to the Thredbo River, with the new midpoint stop and popular get off point at Lake Crackenback Resort. There is a uphill shuttle service available from Lake Crackenback to Thredbo, and for those based at Thredbo Village, check the Thredbo shuttle timetable for return pickup from Lake Crackenback. At Lake Crackenback there is a bike wash facility, parking, coffee, food and a lawn next to the lake to rest after a swim of course. For those with the ability and energy, the new Lower TVT is a great option to take on more of a challenge. If you’re up for something that’s a step above the Upper TVT then this 18.4km trail extension from Bullocks Hut is for you.
It’s not a trail for less experienced riders or little kids, and riders need to go prepared with adequate water, first aid and repair kits, and of course, ambulance cover. There is limited phone reception on the trail and no exit points until the end, so ensure you tell someone when you are going. The Lower TVT finishes at Gaden Trout Hatchery near Jindabyne, but you can ride to and cross over the Kosciuszko Road and pick up the Hatchery Bay trail all the way into Jindabyne. For the ultimate ride take the chairlift at Thredbo and ride from the top of Thredbo to Jindabyne. Just bring a sturdy set of legs for this epic adventure. Jo Larkin, one of the original proponents of the TVT development plans 12 year ago said, “To see it all come together makes my heart sing.” She has been closely watching the growth of the MTB market and said more women are now participating in MTB because it’s strong and empowering, so it resonates. Larkin’s favourite local trail is the Lower TVT because it’s active, it’s challenging, it’s wilderness. “To have a fantastic trail that meanders along the edge of the river. It’s the soulful feeling of being out there.”
◼
PHOTO: Robert Mulally.
RIDE: Take the TVT adventure this autumn.
Local rider and guide, Vanessa Knee, rates the Lower TVT as fun and flowy. “It’s very much a cross country style ride but it’s the tougher part of the trail so strong intermediate skills are needed.” “It’s more technical and narrower than the upper TVT, so it rides differently than the top part. It is a multi-directional
trail, so there is the option to retreat, but the last two to three kilometres includes uphill switchbacks that really test your fitness. There’s no support once you’re in there.” She smiles as she notes, “To be able to ride from the top of Thredbo and finish in Jindabyne is pretty spectacular.”

Masterplan Update IN November 2019 the Deputy Premier John Barilaro announced investigations into a Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct (SAP), but since then there has been limited details of the project released. In short, the SAP was an extension of the Go Jindabyne Masterplan which will now address not only Jindabyne’s future but include the resorts of Thredbo and Perisher. A spokesperson for the NSW Planning, Industry & Environment department said investigations will consider the work undertaken through the Go Jindabyne masterplan and incorporate community feedback already received, with a continued focus on improving the amenity in the Jindabyne township. “Community and key stakeholder consultation are central to the master planning and delivery of a Special Activation Precinct, with community events to be held approximately every 6-8 weeks,” said the spokesperson. “At this stage, technical experts are being sourced to commence assessments and investigations for the draft master
plan, that will look at all factors that contribute to the distinct local character of the region. “These investigations and assessments will be undertaken throughout 2020 and will look at tourism, environment, transport, education, health, local economy, jobs, accommodation, housing, roads, infrastructure and heritage across the 722km2 investigation area.” The Special Activation Precincts team will continue meeting and working with community members including the new Snowy Mountains Community Advisory Group and other key stakeholders to ensure the region cements its place as a key year-round tourism destination. The Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct draft master plan is expected to go on public exhibition in early 2021. The initial Go Jindabyne technical studies will be published on the NSW Department of Planning’s website in the coming months. Mt Kosciuszko and Alpine Lakes YOU may have climbed Mt Kosciuszko previously and are resting on your alpine laurels, but for most it seems a yearly ritual, or often a seasonal rite of passage to revisit the walk again and summit Australia’s highest mountain. As glorious as it is standing on the top at 2228 metres above sea level and snapping your latest Instagram addition, it can also present many other thoughts. From the top you have grand views stretching the full 360 degree gamut of the roof of Australia. This can present you with a conundrum looking at all the other adjacent peaks and valleys and wondering what lies across that next horizon. More on that later, first the walk to Kosciuszko. Thredbo to Kosciuszko Thredbo Village is the gateway for Kosciuszko summit ambitions where a chairlift ride from the picturesque village to Eagles Nest starts your day with a scenic view across the Thredbo Valley and the ski slopes below. From here the family friendly and relatively easy grade 3 hike is the shortest route. Just like following the yellow brick road, but instead follow the raised mesh

dedicated walkway that leads you to the promised peak. There is no shortage of alpine scenery once you leave Thredbo and for those not up for the full 6.5km walk each way you can stop at the lookout and have an ample glimpse of Kosciuszko. But the real achievement is the full 13km round trip to the top, showcasing panoramic views, passing the picturesque Lake Cootapatamba, Rawson Pass and Australia’s highest amenities before weaving your way along the stone path to the summit. Thredbo also offer guided Kosciuszko tours to maximise your experience. Every Thursday and Saturday from March 2 to May 3 or the spectacular Mt Kosciuszko sunset hike March 14 and 27 plus April 10 and 17. Enquire at the ticket office or online at Thredbo.com.au. Charlotte Pass to Kosciuszko An alternative Mt Kosciuszko route is via Charlotte Pass, and the 18.6km return Summit access road which passes by the unique setting of Seaman’s Hut, a short stroll from Rawson Pass. Charlotte Pass is Australia’s highest mountain village and advantageous for the alpine playground including the walking trails to Mt Kosciuszko, Blue Lake and the Main Range Loop. During Easter you can also ride their triple chair from the village to start your alpine adventure plus you’ll find Stillwell Hotel open with coffee, meals and drinks available each day of Easter. Main Range and Alpine Lakes Reflecting on your Kosciuszko summit experience and those surrounding peaks, the alpine world is truly awaiting with so many options. All destinations can be self guided and for those more inclined for a guided hike, Thredbo offer tours on the spectacular Alpine Lakes route of the Main Range Track.

This challenging all day grade 4 hike takes you to some of Australia’s highest peaks and past spectacular rugged terrain, historic alpine huts and glacial lakes. The Alpine Lakes Hike is a 22km round loop of the Main Range Track. Book guided tours at www.thredbo.com.au. Blue Lake alone is often a popular half day outing, where you depart from Charlotte Pass to a steep ascending walk to the Snowy River crossing, and then the climb to Blue Lake and return. The half day walk from Charlotte Pass to Mt Stillwell and the old Thredbo to Charlotte Pass chairlift ruins are a different adventure. Charlotte Pass village is free, as it is at the trailhead area at the end of the Kosciuszko Road. For something gentler for the avid sightseer, the stunning main range and Kosciuszko views are accessible from the boardwalk lookout at Charlotte Pass turning circle www.charlottepass.com.au. GRAVITY SERIES The crew at Thredbo MTB have upped the ante yet again and created a new and exciting race format. The Gravity Series is three rounds of racing where competitors fight for series points and push the boundaries on a creative mix of Thredbo’s main gravity trails. The first event is the Supertrail Scramble which kicks off on February 29, followed by the Ricochet Rumble on March 1 for a super weekend of racing. The finale is the interesting concept of Chainless Champs on April 5. This exciting racing format is open to all categories and focuses on having fun with your mates, plus awesome parties and a stack of cash and prizes thanks to Fox, SRAM, RockShox, Maxxis, Red Bull and BentSpoke Brewing Co for an incredible series. The Supertrail Scramble is a mix of the best and most manageable sections of both the Cannonball Downhill and Kosciuszko Flow with racers switching back and forth across the both trails on their descent to the valley. The Ricochet Rumble pushes the limits for round 2 with competitors racing down the all new flow Ricochet trail before dropping into steeper turns on lower Thredbo All Mountain trail and finishing with a pinch climb. Chainless Champs closes out the series with an extravaganza of racing and crazy getups. Riders remove their chain before pumping and holding speed down a 400m vertical race course from the top of the Gunbarrel Express to the Valley Terminal base station. With overall points on the line, the grueling Chainless Champs

SHOW: The sheep dog trials are always popular.
◼
FUN: Excited kids at Adaminaby Easter Fair.
◼
TIME: Vinatge cars at the Berridale Easter Fair.
Country Shows and Easter Fairs WHAT better way to help the bushfire recovery than to visit a town this autumn for an Agriculture Show or a fun day out at an Easter Fair. The Snowy Mountains have many great choices. For each respective town their agricultural show is an important day in the year, one where tradition has often flowed for over a hundred years. It is a day of pride for producers who have been cultivating their prized crop, be it in the garden, precious wool or a treasured bull especially groomed for the day. There are big stakes involved to acquire that gold ribbon or be awarded best in show. For the visitors each show easily affords a full day outing and are a true fun-loving family day with entertainment for all. Plus, if you have never attended one prior,
educational as well for the kids to see a slice of country life. You can view everything from intelligent kelpies in the sheep dog trials, the classic wood chopping events, photo and art competitions, machinery displays, and the all-important judging of animals from roosters, merino sheep and bulls. The Easter Saturday Fairs at Adaminaby and Berridale are the highlight for these small towns over the Easter holidays and not just when the Easter bunny visits to distribute eggs for the kids. Adaminaby Easter Fair At Adaminaby be fascinated by how high the dogs can jump, a show of determination for all ages in the tug of war, market stalls and the highly popular pie and watermelon eating competitions.
Let’s just say some kids can chew through a slice of melon quickly. The Easter bonnet parade is always anticipated and the ‘Wacky-Quacky’ duck race with a tidy $1000 prize for the winner is a well sought-after accolade. The Easter Fair starts at 9am. While at Adaminaby visit the Snowy Scheme Museum in town which highlights the achievements of the engineers, the builders, the machinery, and the role the project played in the development of the modern Australian nation. The Museum has a wide range of displays including a restored “Utah” Holden EK Ute, of more significance now with the closing of Holden in Australia. The museum also features individual workers stories and the Snowy Scheme’s
part in post war migration and as an engineering feat. Berridale Easter Fair The Berridale Lions Club hold one of their annual fairs at Easter where you can find a plethora of displays and entertainment as you peruse your way through the many stalls offering a variety of produce and food. There is an Easter egg scavenge for the kids and the Cooma Car Club have a great car display as well as an annual raffle. The Snowy Mountains Historic Equipment Association have their large truck with great displays. The Berridale fair hours are 8.30am to 2.30pm and money raised go towards local projects. No matter what event you are visiting this autumn, just bring your empty esky.

Lake Light Sculpture By STEVE CUFF ANTICIPATION will again build prior to Jindabyne’s flagship event, the Lake Light Sculpture held each Easter. Even for those who have attended since 2002, it is the unknown of what artists will present, how big and captivating sculptures will be and what new styles, if any will these creative artists present. As for the setting, well you could hardly aspire to anything more grandeur with the glistening ripples of Lake Jindabyne the perfect backdrop for what has become a huge Easter draw card for the town and region. Last year during the official speeches, the judges acknowledged there are an increasing number of sculpture events of this kind seeking public attention. But Lake Light Sculpture continues to grow and has been a great stepping stone for many artists who submitted works here in their early years, won major prizes which then helped launch a successful career.
Leading sculptor Jimmy Rix is one such artist who judged last year and will return for judging duties in 2020. Jimmy acknowledged last year, “What it did do for me was really elevate my career and I am really thankful for that.” What will be on display this year? That is a question that can only be answered once the event opens on Good Friday. But rest assured, the town of Jindabyne will file out over the weekend and admire the creative minds, along with thousands of visitors who wander the lake foreshore path and appreciate works created from young school children to seasoned professionals. Using extracts from the 2019 judges speeches, what sets this festival apart from others is its use of illumination. This an integral part of many of the works where artists incorporate light into their sculpture. This alone is a major fascination with spectators as they wander each evening under the Easter full moon forming their own opinions on what should win the prizes and accolades.

Smalls Exhibition Artists and Sculptures The amount of effort and time that is invested in each of these larger sculptures needs to be appreciated with artists often spending hundreds of hours crafting these large pieces. The major prize of $2,000 has been sponsored by Kosciusko First National and Jindabyne Accommodation Centre and will again be a sought after accolade for the expectant increased entries. EACH year artists weave their magic and enter stunning creations they hope will impress both the judges and the spectators. The reward can be huge with Matt Hill taking away the $10,000 Thredbo Resort sponsored first prize in 2019. The award for his Mumma and Foal entry was Matt’s second Jindabyne award after winning the People’s Choice in 2018. Matt said it was not all about the awards for him, he just loves sculpting which he has done full time now for three years. “I am absolutely wrapped, it is the second horse I have made and fitting with the local environment,” said Matt. He preferred the 2019 event saying “it was so great to see such large pieces and in a way stronger competition.” Artist Sam Anderson had two huge entries in 2019 and said he would return. Visitors would remember his impressive “Gypsy of the Deep” galvanized steel shark, as well as his “Wild One” horse pictured above.
AS the Lake Light Sculpture event continues to grow in popularity, organisers last year added a new Smalls Exhibition for sculptures too delicate for the outside environment. Located in Rydges Snowy Mountains, here you will find more than 40 smaller sculptures displayed over the Easter weekend bringing a new dimension to this much-loved event. “They may be small in stature but they will leave a big impression,” says artistic director and local art teacher Ben Eyles. “This new offering will appeal to artists who work in glass, delicate or

Dalgety WHEN Banjo Paterson wrote his famous bush poem “The Man from Snowy River”, the Snowy Mountains was certainly in a different era. The “Man” may have long past, but Dalgety, the “Town” on the Snowy River is alive and well and is now the only NSW town left on the Snowy River after the Snowy Scheme was built in the 1950’s and the old town of Jindabyne flooded. If you dig a bit deeper into Dalgety history, in 1902 the town was gazetted as the site for the National Capital that was eventually granted to Canberra. A visit to the Iona Garden and Cafe in Dalgety affords you the Snowy River’s history and nostalgia. Like all folk in this tiny Snowy Mountains village, cafe owners Julie and Ross love their history and have deep affection for the river. They serve great food and coffee, have a gift shop with souvenirs and if you have a green thumb, peruse the nursery to add to your garden. Sporting only a few businesses the town heavily relies on passing tourist trade.
It has been heartbreaking to see the devastation the recent fires have had across South East NSW, not only on the landscape, but also the communities. Over the past several weeks I have met many residents who have been impacted and this impact goes far beyond the physical loss of items. For many it’s the loss of what is normal. We’ve lost homes, valuables and for some of us family members, friends and colleagues. There is no arguing that people are suffering. Please make sure you’re not only looking out for one another but also yourself. Remember there are services available if you’re worried about a family member, a friend or your neighbour and the same help is also available for you. It is completely normal to be experiencing a range of emotions during this time. The following are free services and are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call Jh_fb[ P[he &&& . For some communities across South East NSW the threat is not over. There are still a number of active fires across the region and it is important that we don’t become complacent. If you haven’t already, get your fire plan ready and make sure you’re staying up to date with the situation in your area. The Fires Near Me App is an amazing tool for this. For other communities the process of recovery has begun and assistance is available to help. It is already a stressful time and that is why we have created a new service to help people access the support available as quickly as possible. A one-stop-shop service is being offered by Service NSW to help those affected cut through the red tape. A Customer Care specialist can check your eligibility for assistance and then do the heavy lifting to make it happen, regardless of whether it is Federal, State or Local Government assistance. You can contact Service NSW on 13 77 88, visit a Service NSW shop front or visit https://www.service.nsw. gov.au/campaign/bushfire-customer-care-service The State is blessed with amazing emergency service personnel who have helped us through this time. On behalf of the community – thank you. You are all heroes. This is a tough time for our region and taking care of one another is vital. DRIVE: The Dalgety Bridge and Snowy River.
Festival of the Small Halls MUSIC lovers in the Snowy Mountains region looking for something unique should seek tickets early for the Festival of the Small Halls tour of Dalgety and Brungle. The Festival of Small Halls is a series of tours that takes the best folk and contemporary acoustic artists performing at major Australian festivals and sends them on the road to halls in communities all over Australia. The Halls at Dalgety and Brungle will come alive for the 18th Festival with critically acclaimed Scottish ensemble The Paul McKenna Band and emerging Australian singer-songwriter Alana Wilkinson performing. The tour culminates at the National Folk Festival in Canberra from April 9-13 Scotland’s Paul McKenna has long been ranked among our finest younger singers and songwriters, armed with a powerful yet intensely emotive voice and passionate social conscience. He and his band comprising Conor Markey and Ewan Baird draw on both Scottish and Irish roots. Their music consists of a dynamic full bodied array of originals and

traditional material, plus their latest release, Breathe, which showcases Paul’s development as a songwriter. The New York Times described them as the best folk band to have come out of Scotland in the last twenty years. The shining beam of sunlight that is Alana Wilkinson has had a big year since the release of her debut single Closer in late 2018. Now following up Closer is the release of her second single, Partner In Crime, and if you have not yet fallen in love with Alana Wilkinson, this is the track that’ll

send you swooning. Described as equal parts vulnerable folk singer and vitriolic poet, Surf Coast based, Alana has turned heads recently with stellar performances across major festivals. Combining delicate melodies with disarmingly insightful vignettes about the human condition, Wilkinson is a smiling assassin. Her songs skewer ex-lovers, would-be suitors, ridiculous social norms and the absurd challenges of suburban life in a merciless, yet strangely affectionate way.
Snowy River Town Besides the cafe, there is the Buckley’s Crossing Hotel, a great country pub, Snowy Vineyard and Microbrewery out of town, Tuscany in Dalgety Restaurant and the Snowy River Holiday Park on the banks of the river. With the recent bushfire scenario keeping tourists away, autumn is a great time to return to Dalgety and explore the town and history of the Snowy River. The historic Dalgety Bridge built in 1888 and recently restored spans the river and is an integral attraction to the town. If you are doing a driving loop to Dalgety you will cross the bridge. Book a cabin at the Snowy River Holiday Park and awake each morning with the Snowy River meandering only metres behind your cabin and wander in search of local platypus. Sue and Colin always have the holiday park in superb condition and in recent years established new amenities. The park is a popular stop off for touring caravans and an ideal base for your exploring. New Perisher Chair
◼ NEW: An artist impression of the new 6 seat chairlift top station. EXCITING news for Perisher guests with the resort submitting a Development Application (DA) for a new six seat detachable chairlift on Mt Perisher. The project is currently with NSW Planning and if (and when) this project is approved it would see the removal of the old double and triple chairs, and the new chair built in their place. It is
proposed that the new six seat chair take a very similar line to the current triple chair. Plans for the lift show that it will also be installed higher than where the existing double chair unloads, which would give the resort bragging rights for the highest lifted point in Australia. The expected height of the top station is 2042m. Currently Thredbo has the highest lifted point with Karels T-bar at 2037m. From a user point of view this would be a very welcomed and key lift in the scheme of the Perisher lift network. Mt Perisher is one of the most popular areas in the resort. The hierarchy at Perisher Resort are always fastidious in their submissions and consider all detail to meet high environmental expectations of an alpine region. There would already have been strong consultation with the National Parks, so it is hoped the DA has good grounds to be approved without too many roadblocks. The chairlift will dramatically reduce the ride time to below 6 minutes, a far cry from the old slower double chair that was installed in the early 1960’s.
Perisher Valley Easter Fun WHEN it comes to Easter for the kids, a lot revolves around eggs and Easter bunnies, which is fair enough. The Back to Perisher weekend has an extra layer to add to that fun equation. The Great Perisher Duck Race is a great novelty event that sees plastic ducks float from bridge to bridge in front of the Perisher Centre. Aided by the local Perisher fire department and a hose, the Perisher Creek is offered some extra flow to keep the 350 ducks flowing smoothly along the creek. The ducks are sold for $4 each, prizemoney for the winners, with funds raised going to charity. This is just one of the activities that has seen club lodge members and their friends enjoy this traditional weekend for the past 11 years. This year they want to promote it further to anyone who would like to join in the frivolities. As a joint effort by the Ski Lodges and National Parks, this festive holiday includes Australia’s highest fun run where you can run the 7km return from the Perisher car park to the base of the Blue Cow Summit Chair. If you prefer a

On Saturday a gathering reflects on the day at the highly popular Eiger Chalet, White Spider bar where instead of après ski tales of winter, it might well be duck progress stories and winners celebrating. Sunday morning the eager hunters are out early to search in the Easter egg hunt hosted by the National Parks near Ben Bullen lodge. Additional options include guided walks with rangers who can also offer their expertise on the surroundings for commentary you do not have on your own self-guided tour. Property Guide Real Estate Still Buoyant THE Snowy Mountains real estate market is still buoyant in Jindabyne with buyers aplenty during the Christmas and school holiday period. Median house prices for Jindabyne have risen substantially over recent years (11 per cent in the last 12 months compared to the national average of 4.3%) with land prices increasing by 23.83 per cent in the same period. Several factors have been driving the Jindabyne increase including the record low interest rates and continuing interest from lifestyle investors after several strong snow seasons. A shortage of property supply, the commencement of the Snowy 2.0 project, the Go Jindabyne masterplan and the naming of Jindabyne and surrounding area as a Special Activation Precinct (SAP) have all contributed to the demand. Families relocating from metropolitan areas are strengthening their buying power with the ability to buy into Australia’s premier alpine location for far less than the cost of an average city property! Many of these buyers are looking for more space and prefer the privacy of the generally larger Jindabyne allotments to call home. Sally McCoullough from Kosciuszko First National Real Estate said, “Existing small acre blocks are few and far between and we have a waiting list of genuine buyers who have a specific interest in purchasing small acreage homes and vacant land.” “Properties with dual occupancy potential are highly sought after with lifestyle investors and families keen to maximize their income potential during the busy winter months.” There is also demand for high end executive family homes with 60 Kunama
Drive in Alpine Sands, East Jindabyne recently selling for above $1m within three weeks of listing. The four bedroom architecturally designed home offered magnificent and expansive lake and mountain views on a large 1,528sm allotment. Units in Jindabyne are always in high demand and if priced appropriately do not stay on the market long. A new strata subdivision of an older style building located in Bogong Street proved popular after its December release. This double story timber and brick apartment block of four units enjoys an elevated NE aspect with superb lake views and a short walk to the Jindabyne town centre. The three units that were listed received accepted offers within a week of formally listing. If you would like to be kept informed about recent real estate activity, new opportunities or get a free appraisal of the value of your property in today’s market contact Sally McCoullough via email at sally@kfn.com.au, call 0484 322 214 or visit kfn.com.au website to register your interest.

Heritage Centre Feasibility Study JINDABYNE based TRC Tourism has released a feasibility study for the Snowy Alpine Heritage Centre on behalf of the Snowy Alpine Heritage Association. There is an extensive document plus a 12 page summary highlighting the key factors. The study demonstrates that the centre could attract 58,700 visitors in year 1 to 134,330 in year 10 and generating over $5 million turnover by year 10. The centre would operate as a not-for-profit business. There would be four themes,
First Peoples, Pioneering and Settling Families, the Snowy Hydro Scheme and Leisure. Each theme would have its own gallery space and contain one dramatic interpretive media element to tell its story. The next stage is for the association to meet with authorities about possible site location, with three sites identified for further assessment. The expected overall cost is estimated at $38 million. You can view the summary at www.snowymagazine.com.au.

As a team, we are so lucky to call Gordon our leader. This testament truly speaks volumes about him and his part in our community. “I wanted to share news of a true community and brand ambassador in your network who constantly shows himself to be one of the people, so here goes. We spend a lot of time as a family down at Jindabyne and have had many dealings with Gordon and his team at First National. Gordon is always up for a chat, keen to help, and will stand in Woolworths chatting with anyone - even though he is obviously buying dinner and has family waiting at home. His integrity has, of course, permeated his whole team as we recently had 3 agencies come out to do a CMA to manage our holiday rental - and they were by far the most professional, knowledgeable and had integrity where others were trying to slam the sale and/or told big whopping lies to get the listing.
