THE spring season is often thought of as merely warmer weather following the winter freeze, but don‘t for one minute discount the thought of snow not being the main focus of attention.

There have been memorable snowfalls in September and the ninth month of the year presents great value for both the enthusiast and the novice. With fresh snowfalls in August adding to what was the best start to a snow season since 1968, the 2022 snow season is far from over. In mid–August the snow base was hovering around 150cm in depth, which generally means great spring skiing right until the end of the shoulderSeptemberseason.alsomeansseasonratefor most accommodation providers, and this month is often less crowded allowing a more relaxed time to holiday in the mountains. And when it snows, and it always does snow in September, those fresh tracks last longer due to less people on the mountain. They always prefer a beanie and scarf for added wardrobe effect. WITH the recent inclusion of Switzerland‘s Andermatt–Sedrun resort now included in the Vail Resorts stable of lift access, Australians could be tempted for a European snow holiday in the Swiss Alps. Vail Resorts acquired a 55–percent ownership of the resort operations from Andermatt Swiss Alps AG (“ASA”). The Snowy 2.0 precast factory has recently achieved an impressive milestone, with manufacturing completed for all concrete segments that will line the dry access tunnels. More than 25,000 of these seven-tonne segments have been produced which will line both the main access tunnel and the emergency, cable and ventilation tunnel at Lobs Hole. In total, 35,000 or 27% of the 130,000plus segments needed to line all of the Snowy 2.0 tunnels have now come off the Polo Flat production line, said Paul Broad, Snowy Hydro’s Managing Director and“We’reCEO. proud to be manufacturing and investing locally, and providing employment opportunities for local people as well,” Mr Broad said. “The precast factory is operated by our principal contractor Future Generation Joint Venture and it is powering along. To efficiently and safely produce enough of these massive concrete segments to line the 5.6 kilometres of dry access tunnels is a terrific achievement.” The concrete segments are an intricate piece of Snowy 2.0 project. As the tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavates rock and works its way further into the tunnel, the pre-loaded segments are installed onto the tunnel wall via machinery within the TBM. Once in place, fast drying grout is then injected behind the segment which seals the gap between the concrete and the actual rock of the tunnel. The TBM then uses the installed segment to leverage itself and push further into the tunnel.

Many of the raw materials like aggregates and sand are sourced from the local Schmidt Quarries at Mt Mary and Nimmitabel, which is reducing transport time and costs. Concrete is mixed within the batching plant, which is then transferred into the factory and poured into specially designed moulds. With the use of innovative robotics, the moulds progress along the carousel as the segments cure and finish. There is an onsite laboratory and testing to check the quality of every segment produced. Snowy 2.0 said they are leading the way in Australia to successfully deploy and use robots to automate the process of demoulding, cleaning and application of the release agent on the moulds, before pushing them through to the next production stage. This has allowed the factory to maintain a safe and low-noise working environment for workers. It takes approximately eight to 10 hours to cure and de-mould each segment from start to finish, then they are stored for about two weeks before being transported to site, loaded into TBMs and installed in the tunnels.

The concrete factory supports the operation of the three Snowy 2.0 tunnel boring machines, which are excavating 27 kilometres of tunnels from Tantangara Reservoir to Talbingo Reservoir for the Snowy 2.0 pumped-hydro expansion of the Snowy Scheme.

THE Snowy 2.0 project is a complex engineering feat that comprises many facets, one of which is each tunnel will be lined with thousands of concrete segments. Each of these segments are produced at Snowy Hydro’s Polo Flat factory in Cooma, which employs 120 people from the 2,100-strong Snowy 2.0 workforce.

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2022 - 11 COUNTRY horse racing makes a comeback in 2022 with the Snowy Monaro to host a trifecta of great race days attracting the social set, those looking to dress up for a great day out plus punters. The Bombala Races start off the trio on Saturday October 15 with Bombala Jockey Club committee member Pia Jackson saying this will be a very big day on the Bombala calendar as locals love the race dayPiaatmosphere.saidlocaltrainers will have horses running including Anita Walder who has recently trained the horse Big Steve to win at Goulburn in August. On the day there will be a six-race meeting with major sponsorship from Dongwha Timbers. TAB betting facilities are available, the bookies will field on the local races plus the city races. Bombala host their races on the same third Saturday of October as the Caufield Cup in Melbourne. This year, a good omen for the local punters on the day could be the huge Kosciuszko and Everest races will also be hosted in Sydney. Considering the race day is the first for several years and they are expecting a huge crowd, Pia said they are concentrating on running a great day but will not have the fashions in the field this year. Following on from Bombala, race goers will eagerly await the November Adaminaby Races and then finish with the Cooma Races in early AdaminabyDecember.Races will have a Disney theme this year which is sure to bring out the best imagination for fancy dress. This day is one of the biggest in the area and a highlight on the Adaminaby calendar. The Cooma Races in December is very popular and a big day out for Cooma residents and visitors to the region. YES, it’s real and yes, it really is that pink. An uncommon sight on mainland Australia as pink robins are usually seen in Tasmania. These birds prefer dark wet places as ironic as that is for such a flamboyant bird. In the Snowy Mountains we also have flame robins, scarlet robins, rose robins, yellow robins, and hooded robins which are black and white. Each one of these birds is beautiful and cheeky but none more so than the pink

Thisrobin.particular bird is the only one I’ve ever seen in the snow and I was truly lucky to spot it. Thinking at first it was a flame robin I didn’t pay it enough attention initially but took a reference photo just because I could.

On inspecting the image on my camera screen, I proceeded to swear out loud, drop and leave all my gear where it was and ran off after the pink ball of feathers that was now disappearing into the snowy bush. These little birds are very fast, but they are also robins, and robins are creatures of habit. If a robin lands on a branch it will most likely do it again. This theory is what I counted on and chose to concentrate on the best stick for the job, one that had been used twice in the last 20 minutes since I’ve been watching this little bird’s movements. I moved into the right spot making sure I was the correct distance not to scare the bird but still get the photo, and quietly waited. Another 20 minutes passed, and the robin had not returned to “my intended” stick I had set up on. A small chirp and a whistle at my back caused me to slowly turn, the robin had been behind me, and seemed to be on an even better stick. A slow raising of the camera and somehow a photo of the prettiest robin out there came to be. This was a classic instance of my favourite saying, “never assume, the animals will prove you wrong every time”.

HEARING the positive story of the new Tumbarumba distilling business starting on their journey is quite encouraging. From humble beginnings as a homebased craft business launched just over 12 months ago, the husband-and-wife team of Robbie and Neil were thrilled to have opened their Ladbroken Distilling Co. Tumbarumba distillery tasting room. Visitors step into a different world when they open the shiny copper door and can expect to be taken on a taste adventure with tasting flights and samples available of the various spirits crafted on site. They recently had an open day for the community to “have a sticky beak and see what is happening inside”, conducting tours throughout the day. “We had locals and people from Wagga, people from Corryong and Victoria coming up for day trips,” said Robbie Ladbrook. “They were all keen gin tasters, some of them had been to distilleries before and some had never before, so they were curious. They were wowed by our cosyThevenue.”spaceis cosy and compact, includes a tasting bar, a viewing window into the production area and large apothecary of ingredients on display so everyone has the chance to see the distillation process and botanical ingredients up close. THE Snowy Mountains in the past decade has continued to increase its visitation and credit should be given to all the operators who host events. Thredbo have a host of events on their annual calendar and Lake Crackenback Resort is a popular event destination. The In2Adventure team of Robyn and Simon Lazenby will host the 10th anniversary of their Snowies Multisport Festival at Lake Crackenback Resort in February. THE Jindabyne community has welcomed the new Jindabyne Library with open arms after its official opening in August. Up until now, Jindabyne was the largest regional town in NSW without a library. Jindabyne resident Julie Barr visited the viewing day with daughters Shelby and Scarlett who were really excited. Julie has been involved in the Neighbour Centre who have been pushing to get a library up and running, “so that’s really nice” to have the new library now. “Shelby really loves reading, so she tries to get a lot of books from the mobile library but it’s really nice for her to come and have space and browse the books. She has already found a book in the series she has been reading that she hasn’t been able to get at the other libraries, so we are going to take that home’” said Julie.

THE LIBRARIAN Librarian Zena Jaber said it was an absolute exciting day to welcome their first patron, 10-year-old Jindabyne resident Henry McArthur. “He was the first to borrow children’s books and he received our wonderful new membership card by local children’s illustrator and author Toni Cary,” said Zena. “Our previous library manager Pam Veiss was the buyer for our Jindabyne library collection, we have all genres to meet the community needs from contemporary adult fiction to large print, young adult and graphic novels, children non-fiction and fiction books.”

KAC Cross Country Tradition Continues

THE KAC XC Classic is one of the main events on the cross-country calendar, and while it may not have the heady numbers it did in its heyday, there are a core group who arrive each year to keep it alive. At the registration desk, Alan Hislop advised it was the 50th race and that “we’ve had numbers up in the seven hundreds at our peak”. “We used to have a lot of university students because it fitted in well with that timing. In those days often there was fancy dress, and it was a real fun day. These days, sadly, I think it’s still the same university students that are racing 50 years later,” said Alan. Wayne Pethybridge said he had been racing since he was 13 years of age and had only missed one event since 1973. Wayne explained more about the day saying there were two different races, classical style and the skating freestyle race, and it was often about wax when it comes to“Skatingpreparation.hasjust all got speed wax on, it’s definitely an advantage to get the right speed wax on, go as fast as possible and use the least amount of energy,” saidMostWayne.entrants still strive for the best result possible, but for some it was more about the journey and just being involved in the day. Ken Baxter is another long term competitor who in his heyday was a race winner but now settled for just being able to compete, with a respectable time ofMartincourse.Vaugh said he had already completed one journey of the course as he had skated down from his Charlotte Pass lodge to the start. Martin is another long-term“Traditionallycompetitor.I’vebeen doing this race since I was probably 14. It’s good to see the tradition keeps going but the numbers are getting smaller and smaller,” said Martin. Both disciplines have a mass start with the keen racers eager to set the pace and scoot off up the road past Mt Perisher and the Eyre T-bar. At the other end the finish line awaits, some out of breath more than others, but another completed KAC race. On this day it would be Declan Burke taking line honours in the men’s freestyle and Alina McMaster winning the women’s freestyle. SEPTEMBER excitement builds in the NSW Snowy Mountains, as Snow Australia Interschools prepares to host the 2022 SUBARU Australian Interschools Snowsport Championships at Perisher. An anticipated 1,550 competitors from over 250 schools from NSW, VIC, ACT, QLD, SA, TAS and WA will converge on the region as they compete at this pinnacle and aspirational National Event, following multiple State and Regional Championships held across four resorts in two states throughout July and August.

SPRING is an interesting Snowy Mountains season change and as the weather warms, snow activities start to compete with thoughts of hiking andTherebiking.isa period in spring where the higher alpine trails will need time to dry before too many wheels and boots can traverse their path. While biking enthusiasts await their alpine time, they will tackle lower trails in and around Jindabyne, Mt Gladstone at Cooma and on the western side of the mountains in Tumut and Tumbarumba. Riders are now a massive part of the yearly tourist market and as the temperatures warm and spring turns to summer, biking enthusiasts will be adding the Snowy Mountains bucket list rides to their itinerary. Thredbo Resort is as much a beacon in summer for mountain bikers as snow lovers in winter. The same long trails cater all summer long to the gravity junkies who can’t seem to quench their thirst of biking laps. Similar to those lapping the Supertrail in winter, only with a different mode of transport. You can view

There are some restrictions but the areas that are accessible are awesome to say theTheleast.Sacred Ride bike shop in Jindabyne are planning their summer for when the snow melts and the trails are dry. Their bucket list ride is the lunar-cy ride, where guests ride to Rawson Pass and then walk to the top of Mt Kosciuszko, all under a full moon. The ride back down to Charlotte Pass lookout with only headlamps and the brightness of the full moon glow is simply fantastic. You don’t have to wait for the full moon, guided rides are available to Kosciuszko at any time, just call and book in advance. This year experience some of the premier rides in the mountains with the guided rides from Dead Horse Gap up Bob’s Ridge and out to Cascade Hut and return. The ride is 10km each way and ideal for an e-bike ride, which can be hired from Sacred Ride. For the avid bike rider looking for that extra gruelling experience, the Dead Horse Gap to Cascade Hut, then continuing past Tin Mine Hut to the Pinch River is the trip for you. This Pilot Wilderness trail is not for the faint hearted and one of the most epic rides in the Snowy Mountains. There are numerous trails to explore that cater to all levels of riders, whether on traditional mt bike or with assistance of battery powered e-bike. The ride from Guthega Power Station to Schlink’s Hut or further to Valentines Hut and return will be on the guided ride menu this summer. “The moment the lifts stop in October, we’re running for the next season, particularly if there’s still snow on the ground. We’re trying to do lift maintenance overheads, maintenance on the trains. We’ve got a full-on maintenance programme. For that eight-month period, to we operate again, we don’t really have a minute to spare to get that all completed.”

Talking of his daily role there is an emphasis of troubleshooting anything in advance with his “great management team”. “You do get out on the mountain and still try and get around early in the morning each day. In the morning you come in to make an assessment of the weather, a certain assessment of what lifting we’re going to have operating today. Certainly how the trains going.”

“We’ve already got full development approval as you know. The two years at COVID and the uncertainty that went with that, is probably the reason that we didn’t start it over 12 months ago.”

“And now that hopefully we’ve got that uncertainty put behind us, we can look forward to commencing that project in the not-too-distant future.”

Michael said his personal driving force at Perisher is the continuous or constant“There’schallenge.alwaysthat feeling or that commitment to improving Perisher. It gets in your blood, you’re either a Perisher person or a Snowy Mountains person, or not, it’s trying to seek that continuous improvement of the operation and the resort that sort of keeps driving you along.” You may find Michael skiing during work, and even on his day off “You get out there and you’re just one of the guests, and actually get to experience what the guest is, which gives you a good angle from their perspective.”

PERISHER celebrated their 70th anniversary of lift operations this winter dating back to 1952 when Johnny Abbottsmith ran his Ski Haven Rope Tow. It seemed only fitting that we finish our 70th anniversary stories with current Perisher Operations Director, Michael Fearnside. Michael arrived in the mid-eighties and has the rare acclaim of living that entire time in PerisherNowadaysValley.his role oversees everything that moves in Perisher, from mountain operations, civil and building department and the Skitube. We delve into Michael’s tale of how he arrived and get an insight to his PerisherArrivinglife.in 1986 from Terrigal with a civil construction background Michael would first work on the construction of the Skitube. How ironic that today he oversees its operation. In summer months he would continue with construction work throughout the local area. He mentioned he had previously travelled, and that Perisher seemed the place to call home. He initially lived in a flat at the rear of the old Post Office building at the Eiger Chalet. It would seem appropriate that with a civil construction background, Michael would end up working as a groomer in Perisher and Smiggins. This was prior to the Blue Cow and Guthega merger of 1995. When the resorts merged Michael was well entrenched as part of the team, and his understanding the mountain a key part of the resort“Whenoperations.Icameon full boar with the merger, that was part of it, that we were understanding the Blue Cow Guthega area, and Perisher Smiggins area and bringing those four areas together, understanding the management of that summer and winter,” said Michael. “It’s 1250 hectares, it’s a nice sized resort, that’s for sure,” was how he described Australia’s biggest resort.

In 2000, Michael was the mountain manager under then general manager of operations Bob Jack. He would assume that role when Bob left in 2006. Recently the role has been renamed to be Operations Director.

“The uncertainty of COVID and business, the last two years as you now have been the biggest whack to the ski industry since it started, since in the 70 years of Perisher. They are probably the two most difficult years, particularly from a business perspective.”

Michael indicated the project would be over two summers, with advance works the first summer prior to the lift installation. Culverts need to be installed in Perisher Creek, access roads built and temporarily move the current national parks communications tower at the top of the mountain to allow for the new top station. The communications will then be integrated into the new building.

Commenting generally, Michael said they would always like to continue with upgrading of lifts and mountain development, but the mountain has “handled the capacity this yearPeoplecomfortably”.mightthink Perisher goes into summer hibernation, but that is far from the case.

Staff wise Hans Oversnow have well over 20 people operating their winter service, all a key part of the snow holiday equation for many guests as they arrive at the counter in the Perisher Skitube building and await their transport. Ian’s wife Janine has run the Barina Milpara lodge in Perisher Valley for 13 years, herself a very familiar face having started out at the Swagman in the early 1990’s.When asked what happens in summer “Iggy” responded, “not much, go surfing in a secret spot that nobody knows”.

Ian would spend many more winters in Whistler where he assisted Mike and Gerry with background logistics and each year returning to Perisher for winter work. “I came from the Central Coast, like everyone else,” was how Ian described his arrival in the mountains in 1988.

A Familiar Face Transports Perisher Guests

For regular Perisher visitors requiring Hans Oversnow transport service to their lodge, there is no doubt you have crossed paths with Ian. Although you may be more versed in calling him Iggy. When Ian ventured to Whistler, Canada in 1988 for a Mike Dempsey skier improvement course, one highly popular with Australian skiers, Ian was renowned for not feeling the cold. Mike Dempsey’s brother Gerry bestowed the nickname Igloo on Ian, and it has stuck, just with a “Gerryvariation.Dempsey called me Igloo and then when he came to Australia, we cut letters off and put a y on it. Everyone knows me as Iggy,” said Ian.

“I was at Skitube until 1995 and then Hans Oversnow from there. I did start life actually as ski school at Thredbo for a very short time, and that (instructing) wasn’t forPeopleme.” may know Ian as the face of Hans Oversnow such is his longevity, working both on the desk, driving visitors to lodges and shipping freight. “Not always a happy face, but I try,” said Ian referring to his busy winter.

“We’ve got at least 13 or 14 passenger vehicles and then over ten groomers and snowmobiles, so we’re probably looking at 30 or 40 vehicles.” Except for Perisher company freight, everything to do with passengers and freight logistics to lodges and hotels passes through Hans Oversnow and the Perisher Freight Shed which they alsoWhenoperate.asked did he see the same passengers every year and do they recognise each other he said “yes, big time”. “We probably see over a thousand people on the weekend, easy. And then there’s people that have had children that I’ve watched grow up to. They didn’t even have children when I first met them and now their kids are 20 years old, or older.” He admitted he often knew people’s destination just by face, visiting the same lodge each year. “But you can’t remember everybody.”

Resort said as well as providing juniors with crucial ‘real life’ skills, they also acknowledge the value juniors bring to their teams. The juniors are a great asset and their enthusiasm is great to see. Rhianna Kell has been skiing since was she was three years old and is one junior working within the snowsports school. “It’s been awesome being up here in the snow and being with all the little kids is great. All their little stories and all that, it’s great working with them and seeing how they ski and improve their skills,” saidTheRhianna.program is not just for local juniors, Kai Avis visits from Terrigal every weekend with his family. His siblings are enrolled in the Perisher Winter Sports Programs and Kai is working in the snowsports school learning to be a snowboarding instructor. Jasmine Zollinger is no stranger to Perisher, here family owning the Hans Oversnow business. The 17-year-old has already worked four years at Perisher in ski hire and aspires to help her family continue the business, plus to keep working for Perisher as she enjoys it. “Since I was a kid I used to do (Perisher) mini mites, and I did that every weekend, and never skipped a weekend no matter how bad it (weather) was,” said Jasmine. “It’s been really busy, a lot busier than the last few years which is really good to see. I really liked meeting all the new people coming in as well and they always like to talk to you and they’re really nice to you when you give them their boots.” Kai Ingle said this was his first season working at Perisher’s ski hire. “It was really good starting, they showed me around and what to do and I love working with all of them, they are great fun. All the customers are actually pretty nice to us which is good,” said Kai. In the media department young 16-yearold Oscar Wright is working under Lucas Wilkinson. Lucas himself completed work experience with Perisher when he was at school in Jindabyne. Oscar said he likes the work and it’s a mix of stuff, focus on filming and just make sure you get the shot. “You do filming and editing, you capture clips outside or depending where you are, depending on the day. Like a snow day might be good powder shots or if it’s a sunny day, maybe get some nice turns and edit them together and then make a video for Perisher,” said Oscar. “Lucas, he’s a really good mentor, he really shows me everything I need, he just always wants to help out.”

Legend Times For Perisher Instructing

Bruce said Billy Foster, a ski instructor and secretary of the NSW Ski Association called Cabramurra to see if anyone wanted to attend a ski instructor course at Thredbo. When Bruce arrived, Austrian Franz Pichler was chief of the course. “I never knew we would become such good mates,” said Bruce of his longterm friendship since. Both working at Perisher for decades. “I can’t emphasise enough, the contribution that he (Franz) actually gave to Australian skiing. He gave his time, he wasn’t an Austrian who was just there to look down on you, he really helped, he was brilliant.” The end of the ski course coincided with the end of the Cabramurra contract. Bruce had also been offered a full time trainee accountant job in Canberra. “I couldn’t do it, that’s it I’m off,” said Bruce laughing again, he was an outdoors person. This prompted him to travel to Scotland to the snow resort of Aviemore, from their returning to Perisher to be a ski instructor in 1979. Another visit to Scotland the following northern winter, Bruce would also travel to Austria to sit his first Austrian instructor exam. Part of the exam was to work at an Austrian resort for six weeks, Bruce ending up at Katschberg ski resort. Bruce said of Perisher, “to me it was the best ski school in the world. We didn’t have the top instructors, we had the blokes who taught them,” Bruce said“Nearlyproudly.allthe instructors were from the Bundesportheim (Austrian Ski Instructor Training), you had to be good just to be ordinary. It was good for me, I knew nothing. To be honest If at that stage I had known what I needed to learn, I would have gone and taken the accountant job. These guys were so bloody good. They were really helpful.”

Bruce instructed until 1983 before becoming a supervisor under ski school director Sigi Draxl, with Franz the leading supervisor. “That was probably the best times of the ski school, Hans Krssnitzer was the head instructor from the Austrian national demo team, and his wife Franzi was probably the best ski instructor skier I have ever seen. They came from the Arlberg region and brought these fantastic instructors withBrucethem.”said he loved his job as outside supervisor, would put his boots on at 8am in the morning and split all the ski groups. “We would set the ski star course and in all the years I could never catch Franz Pichler.”

THERE may not have been many people who have learnt to ski at Cabramurra, but that is where Bruce Hawkin’s snow life started when he was working on construction building the alpine town. Most people in the snow industry know Bruce for his long association working as a Perisher ski school supervisor and manager. Speaking with Bruce, his enthusiasm for skiing and ski school is infectious, as is his fondness of fellow instructors and what they gave to the industry. During his time at Perisher he worked with many of the most senior Austrian instructors of which he is most appreciative. But briefly back to Cabramurra, where he also helped build the Cabramurra Ski Club rope tow, and where he learned to ski. “They taught be to ski basically, and they used to run races on a weekend and Wednesday night, on that mean little slope. After a couple of years I was winning and they don’t teach me anymore,” said Bruce with a Inlaugh.1978

He would venture to Vail in Colorado for northern seasons in the mid eighties, but then stopped working overseas. From the resort merger in 1995 Bruce would work his time at Perisher and finished up in the ski school in 2001. In the summers he would work on the painting crew. He finished his Perisher work at The Station as maintenance manager, saying his time was up at ski school and he couldn’t do any better any longer. “It was my time,” said Bruce “I was really appreciative of Perisher, they gave me a lifetime season pass before it was policy,” said Bruce.

The theme is simple, dress up in your finest lederhosen or dirndl dress, sing along to the music, partake in a few ales and enjoy the festive day. “They all get involved, usually you’ll find in dress up the girls get pretty active and the boys get a bit lazy, with Oktoberfest they all get involved and have a great time,” said Tim. The brewing company have an extensive beer selection with Tim suggesting the JW Pilsner is a good brew for this day. “We do that all year round and it’s a pretty popular beer to start with, and on Oktoberfest it’s a great beer you can drink that all day long. WITH the summit in sight those last few steps seem so close as you take a few deep breaths and push on. All the effort has come to fruition, you are about to reach the top and conquer your first trueWemountain.couldvery well be describing Mount Everest, but no, we are ascending to the top of Australia’s Mount Kosciuszko. And you know what? It’s much easier than any 8000m peak and everyone can easily walk to the top of Australia. At 2228m above sea level, you are at altitude and the journey you have taken is pleasant and full of classic Australian alpine scenery. There are granite boulders, running streams and rivers and in early summer, the fields are filled with blooming wildflowers. Yes, it’s an altitude thing, and Australia’s alpine greets you in so many welcoming ways. There is something special about hiking in the alpine. Is it the clean fresh air? Or simply the serenity mixed with stunning scenery. Either way, it’s very enjoyable and a bucket list item each summer for many visitors to climb Kosciuszko (should we say Therewalk).aretwo easy routes, the shortest from the top of Thredbo where there is a dedicated 6km raised walking path you can easily follow. Yes, it is uphill, but it is not overly strenuous, just allow yourself 4 to 6 hours round trip. The slightly longer route of 9km each way is from the Charlotte Pass lookout following the Summit Road fire trail. Here you have a totally different scenic palette to admire as you approach from a different valley. Just allow 6-8 hours depending on your hiking speed. The summit of Kosciuszko is undoubtedly the bucket list hike, but there are more. Much more. The scenic Rainbow Lake, Blue Lake, the Main Range track and new Snowies Alpine Walk from Charlotte Pass to Guthega are all superb hiking trails of varying length. For the keen adventurer, you could spend the whole summer exploring and still not visit every nook and cranny of the Kosciuszko National Park. The northern Kosciuszko area itself has an abundance of hikes and dirt road drives to access places such as Blue Waterholes. Combine the alpine with the sub alpine towns on both sides of the range, and you have a wealth of holiday adventures in the warmer months.

REGULAR anglers will be encouraged to hear the annual Snowy Mountains Trout Festival week will return in 2022 coinciding with its usual Melbourne Cup week. Having been on hold for two years due to COVID, the committee have resurrected the event with some minor adjustments to the criteria. This year the lucky entrant prize drawn at the Berridale presentation will see one lucky angler walk away with $5000 cash prize. There will be daily prizes and secret weights, totalling $7000 for the week, but this year all registrations must be conducted online. All the details to register and how to weigh your fish are available on the website.Afterthe two-year layoff, the committee are gearing up this year’s event as a prelude to a great 50 th anniversary of the trout festival in 2023. The trout will be released into Lake Eucumbene, Lake Jindabyne plus Lake Crackenback and anyone who catches the 2022-23 yellow tagged fish can register their catch to win cash prizes. The beauty being, you may catch a tagged fish in November and still be eligible for the draws all the way until the end of April. The Snowy Trout Challenge will embark on its third season, and it’s set to be the best yet. The challenge is seven months of fishing and runs until end of April 2023. This season draws are every two weeks instead of monthly, giving anglers more opportunities to win. Executive Director, Janine Collins, said: “One of our strengths is the opportunity to bring many styles of classical music to regional NSW. This tour will even involve a harpsichord travelling along the coast, a delicate keyboard instrument that is not often seen outside of major cities due to its fragility.” Simon Allen from the Snowy Monaro Arts Council (SMAC), said while Cooma has several organisations looking after the arts, including visual arts, theatre, dance, choral music, modern music and the Cooma District Band, SMAC endeavours to bring classical music - in the broadest sense of the term - to the area. “We do that by encouraging performance by local classical musicians and by providing concerts for the local audience. Partnering with Music in the Regions is ideal for this last purpose, and we hope this concert will be the first of a regular collaboration,” Mr Allen said.

The event will see an influx of historic, classic and vintage cars, all prepared impeccably for the show. The Cooma Showground will be filled with millions of dollars’ worth of classic cars, the show making a return from the pandemic hibernation, the last show held in 2019 where 376 vehicles were displayed. Spectators will wander the isles in awe of the immaculate cars, many of which have detailed information on their history and proud owners always willing to engage with admirers to discuss the finer details of their Hostedmachine.byCooma Car Club, the highly rated show is one of the biggest events in Cooma and a drawcard for visitors.

This year the club have waived the registration fee in consideration of the current times, plus for registered entries prior to August 31 the owners will have their car included in a coffee table commemorative photo book to be released by the Visitorsclub.can expect to see street machines, hot rods, vintage and classic cars, muscle cars, military vehicles, trucks, stationary engines and motorbikes. This year a vast range of electric vehicles will be displayed inside the Cooma Multi-Function Centre. “First time ever, electric vehicle displays with all sorts of gear running on batteries from lawnmowers, motorbikes and cars,” saidAnotherRogan.special occasion for 2022 will see entrants in the Perth to Sydney Marathon car rally visit the show. A re-enactment of the 1968 London to Sydney route, 85 cars will have their last checkpoint in Cooma after travelling 323km from Lake Entrance via Buchan, Murrindal and Wallace Craigie Lookout on the Barry Way. The Cooma Car Club will be hosting the rally teams for dinner in their museum clubhouse. For entertainment on the day, local band the Hip Replacement will be playing plus a special guest speaker to be announcement soon. THE Tumbarumba community have pulled together to purchase a large parcel of land where the Mt Tumbarumba Adventure Park will be built. Headed by the Cycle Tumbarumba club, the community have raised more than their $235,000 target and purchased the land, allowing the project to now progress to the next construction stage.

Bikes are really on the agenda in Tumbarumba where a bicycle playground in Goldfields Park was funded with $224,000 through the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities FundCateringgrant.to the junior cyclists, the playground design incorporates a bike road circuit where young kids can ride or scooter and learn to not only ride, but rules of the road. The bike playground adds to the existing skate park and pump track and is a great asset to the community for residents and visiting families.

The rail trail was a pilot project for the NSW State Government and the first rail trail in NSW. Such has been the success of this Tumbarumba to Rosewood trail that the project is now being viewed as a model to other towns embarking to create their ownTheretrail.is support growing for further trails in the adjacent towns from Batlow to Tumut. This would greatly add to the options for visitors and further enhance the area as a riding destination. Many Tumbarumba businesses have praised the trail as it has created a tourist demographic that was previously non-existent.

When the time comes next year they will offer their van to anyone who can use it on a farm, or even for scrap material. There will be others with the same scenario, some owners are already now attempting now to sell in advance.

When contacted about the situation the NRMA Parks and Resorts replied with the“Fromfollowing.October 2023 the NRMA Jindabyne Holiday park is transitioning to short-term accommodation only. Annual site occupancy lease agreements will transition to a periodic agreements until then should occupants choose to remain on site until the end of September 2023,” said an NRMA Parks and Resorts spokesperson.“Weunderstand this update is disappointing to our annual site holders. We hope to continue to welcome them to our park and have extended the vacate date of the site to the end of the 2023 snow season to allow long-term site holders to enjoy another summer and winter holiday at their site.”

Having spent many thousands of dollars in the compliance process and now being told to vacate has stirred the hornets’ nest. Many van owners have taken to social media to vent their anger, and that is understandable, as it will change their lives and how they visit the mountains in the future. When contacted, the NRAM Parks and Resorts explained their view and offered a statement below. The business of caravan and holiday parks is in demand and since the NRMA have taken over the lease in Jindabyne, the park is extremely busy with visitors. They’ve had great use of their van with the family and have spent time both holidaying and working in Thredbo. To them personally it’s not life defining as it may be for others.

“The NRMA is working with site holders who had commenced required works to their site to meet council compliance standards to review reimbursements.”

Commenting on the discounted offers the NRMA have offered going forward, they had mixed emotions. “The reality is the majority of people who are affected won’t have a caravan,” said Rob explaining most of the permanent vans are now not mobile.

Even though they appreciated the lengthy period to vacate the premises, their main grievance is the fact everyone had to acquire the engineering certificate at great cost. Even up until early 2022 there was no indication of“Therechange.was that inducement to do the work for over a year and a half period with no indication.
