MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Welcome to the Providence Performing Arts Center’s 2018/2019 Season! On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank you for your continued patronage and support of our presentations and programs. Your attendance and support are vital to PPAC and our community! With the support of our loyal patrons, donors, underwriters, and sponsors, PPAC is undertaking a complete restoration of the Weybosset Street façade, which will occur during the fall of 2018 and the summer of 2019. This will allow patrons of PPAC and visitors to the Capital City to enjoy the Theatre and ensure the structural integrity of the building for decades to come. Our Community Outreach Initiative continues to provide free or low-cost programs to individuals who would otherwise be unable to experience the magic of live theatre. Last season, PPAC hosted over 500 Rhode Island service members and their families to see a variety of shows through our Seats for Service Members program. PPAC’s Big Dreams Begin With Broadway program hosted approximately 70 “bigs” (mentors) and “littles” (children) from Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State to see FINDING NEVERLAND. PPAC’s Bank of America Arts Showcase brings students, teachers, and artists together, embodying the true spirit of a community arts program. In 2018, PPAC expanded the program from middle school students to students of all ages who attend live performances of dance, music or theatre at PPAC during regular school hours. This creates a lasting educational experience that goes beyond the walls of a classroom. We would like to thank Textron for 18 years of continuous support of our ARTS Scholarships Program, which awarded 34 scholarships this year to talented students statewide. To date, over 580 scholarships have been awarded to Rhode Island students, making it possible for them to attend summer arts programs. Next Stop Broadway® is a week-long theatre arts program connecting professional artists with students ages 10 - 17 who are interested in the performing arts. In partnership with The Robert F. Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation, ten scholarships were granted to children to pursue their interest and develop their artistic talents. FIRSTFED also sponsors From Books to Broadway, a partnership between PPAC and Rhode Island schools designed to expose students to the magic of Broadway with the opportunity to meet, greet, and learn about touring Broadway theatricals from cast and company members. Our free spring and fall Wonders of the Wurlitzer Concert Series remain popular for people of all ages. This concert series is made possible thanks to the support of our Annual Fund donors. For more information on PPAC and our Community Outreach Initiatives, please visit our website at ppacri.org. I look forward to sharing with you another exciting season at PPAC!

@BNYMellonWealth
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Thank you for joining us for our EPIC Broadway Season, where we are celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Loew’s Theatre Building. The venue opened on October 6, 1928 and has been known as the Providence Performing Arts Center since 1982. Please join us on Saturday, October 13 from 10A to 3P for our FREE anniversary celebration for the community. We would like to thank our Broadway Series title sponsor, the Taco/White Family Foundation, for their long-standing support of our Broadway productions. We also wish to thank our Broadway Season media sponsor WPRI 12, our Encore Series media sponsor Cox Media, and Family Night media sponsors ABC 6 and Coast 93.3 for their continuing partnerships. We welcome and thank Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island as our new CenterStage program book sponsor and BankNewport as our new Family Night sponsor. We also appreciate the support of our mobile app partner, iHeartRadio. Our 2018/2019 Taco/White Family Foundation Broadway Series features eight stellar productions, including the Providence premiere of HAMILTON and the National Tour launches of Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed production of Boublil and Schönberg’s MISS SAIGON, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s groundbreaking CATS, and the ten-time Tony Award winning Best Musical, THE BAND’S VISIT. Inspired by the beloved films, ANASTASIA tells the story of Anya, a courageous young woman who goes on a journey to solve the mystery of her past. Roald Dahl’s CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY brings the much-loved storyteller’s book to life with songs from the original film. SCHOOL OF ROCK is based on the hit film and follows Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star who turns a class of straight-A students into A+ rockers. WAITRESS THE MUSICAL brings us “inside” the world of Jenna, a waitress and master pie maker making sense of her life and friendships, told through a score written by Tony and Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles. Our 2018/2019 Encore Series features the highly-anticipated return of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and JERSEY BOYS. Back by popular demand, THE BOOK OF MORMON returns to PPAC for a limited engagement. This Season, our BankNewport Family Night performances are: ANASTASIA on Wednesday, November 28 at 7P, Roald Dahl’s CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY on Wednesday, February 6 at 7P, and SCHOOL OF ROCK on Wednesday, February 27 at 7P. Visit the Box Office window or call at (401) 421-ARTS (2787) for more information on Buy One; Get One pricing – a great way for families to enjoy theatre together! We invite you to follow us on social media @ProvPacRI, download our mobile app via the App Store® or Google Play1, and visit our website at ppacri.org for the most up-to-date information. Stay with us as we keep announcing shows and events that will keep “PPAC” on your calendar throughout the year! Enjoy the Season! Warm Regards,

SUPPORT THE 2019 ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN Do you want to see your name in this program book next year and earn other valuable benefits? For more information about our Community Outreach Initiative and Annual Fund donor levels and benefits, visit ppacri.org/support/donate or contact the Development Office at donors@ppacri.org or (401) 421-2997. The Providence Performing Arts Center dedicates 100% of its proceeds from the Annual Fund Campaign towards our Community Outreach Initiative. This Initiative allows PPAC to create, produce, and present programs and activities that make the Theatre accessible to a wider range of people, especially young audiences and artists. Our free or low-cost tickets to these events are often the one opportunity many people will have to experience the joy of theatre. It is only with the help of our donors that we are able to offer these valuable theatre experiences to the entire community: PPAC PRESENTS

2018 ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN FOR COMMUNITY OUTREACH Each year, the Theatre is faced with the challenge of raising enough funds to offset the cost of producing and presenting the valuable programs we offer as part of our Community Outreach Initiative. The Annual Fund is the vehicle that makes that possible. Annual Fund proceeds also support the development of new programs that specifically serve the needs of artists and audiences of demographic, ethnic, cultural, social, and professional diversity. A special THANK YOU goes to our Community Outreach Program underwriters who have made significant Annual Fund contributions designated to one or more specific outreach initiatives.

CELEBRATING NINETY YEARS OF “I remember coming here as a young person and thinking I was walking into a fairyland. {…} I would like my little grandson to bring his grandchildren here. This will be here long after I am gone…” 1 - Mrs. B.A. (Sylvia) Dario, one of the many champions of the Loew’s Theatre Building.
It was a momentous day when the Loew’s Theatre Building, now known as the Providence Performing Arts Center, opened on October 6, 1928. The Theatre, designed by architectural firm Rapp & Rapp, has always been a visual marvel, and has astounded visitors with its beauty and grandeur. For nine decades, the Loew’s Theatre Building has not only survived, but ultimately flourished, while undergoing various name changes, storm damage, and ongoing architectural restoration. After its opening in 1928, the Loew's State Theatre enjoyed several decades of success as a premiere movie palace. However, the venue began experiencing financial hardships and declining attendance with the rise of television’s popularity in the early 1950s. The Theatre also suffered damage from the New England Hurricane of 1938 and Hurricane Carol in 1954. The resulting damage from Hurricane Carol led to the removal of the Theatre’s original Morton pipe organ. In 1972, the Theatre changed its name to the Palace Concert Theatre, where it mainly presented rock concerts, as opposed to screening films. The Palace Concert Theatre continued to fall into disrepair and to lose revenue. In 1976, through the efforts of Mrs. B.A. (Sylvia) Dario, the Theatre re-opened as the Ocean State Theatre, where it returned to its days of screening films. On opening night, the staff showed Paul Simon’s Murder by Death, and even invited Robert Reilly, an attendee from the opening day of the Loew’s Theatre Building, to attend as a guest of honor. Reilly told The Providence Journal-Bulletin, “I am glad we have some idealists in this town who would save a theater like this.” 2 The Ocean State Theatre continued to screen films, but with limited success. The building’s owner, B.A. Dario, considered demolishing the historic Theatre. Local community figures, including then Governor J. Joseph Garrahy, then Chairman of PPAC’s Board of Trustees Bruce Sundlun (Governor of Rhode Island, 1991 - 1995), then Providence Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci, Jr., and Mrs. Dario, fought valiantly to save the building.

They began to discuss transforming the Ocean State Theatre into a center for the arts to preserve the Theatre and to also help renew the downtown Providence area. In 1977, the Loew’s Theatre Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1978, the Theatre was purchased and saved by seven founding members: Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank, and Textron, Inc. The Ocean State Theatre became a private non-profit corporation and was called the Ocean State Performing Arts Center. In 1982, the Ocean State Performing Arts Center changed its name to the Providence Performing Arts Center, as a way of honoring the City’s commitment to saving the venue. For the past 36 years, as the Providence Performing Arts Center, the Theatre has flourished and evolved through the efforts of past and current board members and administrative staff, making it one of the most successful, not-for-profit theatres in the United States. Significant projects include a full-scale stage house expansion in 1995 and an historically accurate restoration of the Grand Lobby, Arcade, and House. These improvements allowed the Theatre to present large-scale touring productions like THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, MISS SAIGON, WICKED, and Disney’s THE LION KING in Providence. In 2000, the state-of-the-art electronic marquee was first "lit" by the actor Robert Urich. In 2002, the Theatre commissioned former RISD professor Dan Dailey to design a magnificent chandelier, which is now in the House Proper. The chandelier was installed in 2004. In 2005, the first-ever elevator was installed for patrons. In recent years, the carpet and wall fabric, faithful to their original designs, have been replaced. The Theatre was brought into the digital age with the installation of LED display screens on the Marquee and video digital boards in the Arcade in 2012. Since 2008, the Providence Performing Arts Center has launched eighteen National Tours. This Season alone, MISS SAIGON, CATS, and THE BAND’S VISIT will premiere their National Tours at our Theatre. These National Tour launches have contributed to making the Providence Performing Arts Center a well-respected, world-class cultural institution located in the heart of Providence. Additionally, as a destination for National Tours, PPAC is an important contributor to Providence’s economic and cultural growth. 1

SEATS FOR SERVICE MEMBERS In the spring of 2008, PPAC initiated a pilot Seats for Service Members program to provide preferred orchestra seats to members of Rhode Island’s National Guard and their families for all of the performances in our Broadway Series and Encore Series. The program has been a resounding success and we are pleased to continue it for its tenth consecutive season! We only hope that the Seats for Service Members program will continue to let the thousands of men and women, who unselfishly dedicate themselves to protecting our country, know how much we greatly appreciate their outstanding sacrifices and courageous efforts. If you are interested in sponsoring this program, please contact Claudia Zompa, Director of Development, at czompa@ppacri.org or (401) 574-3122. Photo: Core Photographic
