THE PPAC STORY…
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2018: 10A - 3P
It was a momentous day when the Loew's Theatre Building, now known as the Providence Performing Arts Center, opened on October 6, 1928. The Theatre, designed by architectural firm Rapp & Rapp, has always been a visual marvel, and has astounded visitors with its beauty and grandeur. For nine decades, the Loew’s Theatre Building has not only survived, but ultimately flourished while undergoing various name changes (The Palace, Ocean State Theatre, and more), storm damage (Hurricane Carol in 1954), and ongoing architectural restoration.
Please join us in celebrating our beautiful Theatre's 90th Anniversary and all that it has given to the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island. Additional event details will be announced; visit www.ppacri.org and sign up for our e-list to receive more information.
Rhode Island almost lost this precious gem when the Building was slated for demolition in the late 1970s. Thankfully, the Building was saved through the efforts of several local figures, including Mrs. B.A. (Sylvia) Dario, former Governor of Rhode Island Bruce Sundlun, and former Providence Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci. In 1977, the Loew's Theatre Building was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1978, the Building was purchased by seven founding members and became a private non-profit corporation. Since 1982, the Building has lived on as the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC).
This event will be FREE and all are invited to attend!
Through it all, it has remained an exquisite and beloved place – each time the curtain rises, new adventures and magic await the audience…a world class Theatre at home here in Rhode Island.
