Tickets: $93 - $36 On April 29, 1996, an original rock musical written by a then-littleknown composer named Jonathan Larson opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Twenty years later, RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations. This completely sung-through musical features some of the most loved music in Broadway history, including “One Song Glory,” “Another Day,” “La Vie Bohème,” “Take Me or Leave Me,” and of course, “Seasons of Love.” RENT is the masterful reimagining of Puccini’s opera La Bohème, set in New York City’s East Village during the HIV/AIDS crisis. Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists who each work towards creating something lasting in the world. A resounding mantra in RENT are the words, “NO DAY BUT TODAY.” Original Michael Grief notes that, “The message of the musical is to truly appreciate the time that we have and to truly appreciate each other, because you don’t know when someone will be gone from your life.” Larson’s sudden death at the age of thirty-five a few weeks before RENT’s off-Broadway opening added a deeper sense of poignancy to that message. Larson was posthumously awarded the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the show would win the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical. Two decades after RENT premiered, the show continues to inspire a generation of creative artists that is expanding the scope of musical theatre and, in turn, reaching young audiences. All these years later, RENT retains its immediacy, imparting ideas that resonate with our humanity and reminding us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.
