PPAC Annual Gala: Spend the Night with Billy Crystal (Tickets on sale as of Dec. 2)
In 2012, ONCE was the recipient of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show also launched its first National Tour here at PPAC is 2013, and now proudly returns to the Theatre for a limited engagement.
Inspired by the eponymous independent Irish film and featuring music composed by the film’s stars Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, the musical has been hailed as “the sweetest and most romantic show on Broadway. It speaks volumes about the power of music and connection” (Daily News). ONCE tells the story of a struggling Irish singer/songwriter known as Guy and a Czech pianist known as Girl who is struggling to support herself and her family. Guy and Girl embark on a brief and transformative journey as they connect over their mutual love of music.
Edna Walsh, who won the Tony Award for Best Book for ONCE, says, “…with this show…we created a community. It’s like a spotlight is shone on these people in Dublin at a specific time, and around it grows romance and creativity. And then it goes. That’s part of the loss. You see the potential for people to come together and do beautiful things, and then those things end. In Partnership with WPRI and Toys for Tots, “In addition to the story of the Guy and the Girl, we needed to be sure there are all these other love stories in the air. Each person is riffing off a love story that’s been lost, that’s got away. That was the key: for the audience to feel part of the experience, also to look at the people on the stage and go, ‘They’re us.’”

Inspired by Roy Horniman’s 1907 novel Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal, GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE tells the uproarious tale of Monty Navarro (played by Kevin Massey), a distant (and penniless) heir of the D’Ysquith Family who takes matters into his own hands and slays his eight familial competitors (all played by John Rapson) to acquire the family fortune. All the while, Monty must also juggle two romances, one with his cousin, Phoebe D’Ysquith (Kristen Hahn), and another I’ve never with Sibella Hallward (Kristen Beth Williams), who has already married for money. laughed so

I said, from the moment I started working on - NPR [GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE] is, ‘this is the comic side of The Talented Mister Ripley.’ Why do people like those Patricia Highsmith books and movies? Why do we like to see people get away with it? Because, a part of us wants to get away with it – whatever it is. In this instance, casting is very, very important. And, it helps that the family is odious. And there is an injustice, they treated Monty’s mother like hell.”

That being said, the show is also tremendously funny. Book writer and co-lyricist Robert Freedman said, “Steve [Lutvak, composer and co-lyricist] and I had a tremendous amount of fun writing it and we kept making sure that we were keeping everything consistent in tone. And we just cracked each other up writing lyrics. We wrote lyrics together in the same room, which some people can’t conceive of, but that’s exactly how we did it. And so it was fun!” PART OF THE BROADWAY SERIES SPONSORED BY:
