MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Welcome to Providence Performing Arts Center’s 2013/2014 Broadway season. We have the MOST “AMAZING” SEASON to share with you including EVITA, ONCE, and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which are all opening their national tours right here at PPAC, the celebrated return of WICKED, and the highly-anticipated THE BOOK OF MORMON. With generous support from our loyal patrons, donors, and sponsors, PPAC has completed more facility projects that enhance the comfort and experience of our theatre patrons. Through a grant from The Champlin Foundation, we completed brick, parapet, and waterproofing restoration on the Weybosset Street façade. HVAC upgrades will be completed this season to provide better cooling in the Theatre balcony as well as energy-efficient window replacements in the Loew’s office building. Our Community Outreach Initiative continues to provide free or low-cost programs to individuals who would otherwise be unable to experience the magic of live theatre. We thank Textron for over 13 years of continuous support of our ARTS Scholarships Program, which awards 30 scholarships to underprivileged students state-wide. To date, over 425 scholarships have been awarded to Rhode Island students, making it possible for them to attend summer arts programs. Our free Wurlitzer Concert Series remains popular for young and old alike, and is made possible thanks to the support of our Annual Fund donors. Camp Broadway® is a week-long theatre arts program connecting professional artists with students ages 10-17 who are interested in the performing arts. In partnership with the Robert F. Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation, each year 10 scholarships are offered to children to pursue their interests and develop their artistic talents. The Robert F. Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation also sponsors From Books to Broadway – a partnership between PPAC and Rhode Island schools, designed to expose students to the magic of Broadway performances with a chance to “meet and greet” cast members. PPAC’s Bank of America ARTS Showcase brings Rhode Island middle school students, teachers, and artists together and personifies the true spirit of a community arts program. Each year, approximately 10,000 middle school students attend live performances of dance, music, or theatre at PPAC during regular school hours, creating a lasting educational experience that goes beyond the walls of a classroom. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank you for your patronage and support of our presentations and programs. Your attendance and support is vital to PPAC and keeps our community thriving. Please visit our website at www.ppacri.org for more information on PPAC and ways you can help support our Outreach efforts. I look forward to seeing you for an “AMAZING” season of shows at PPAC!
Joseph W. Walsh, Esq. Chairman, Board of Trustees

SUGGESTED THEATRE ETIQUETTE Most of the following suggestions are based on comments from our patrons. We hope that you take these into consideration so that everyone may enjoy the show in comfort! Thank you for your patronage! • Please turn off all cell phones, pagers, and other electronic devices; please note, do not take any photos or recordings of the performance. • Please remove your hat so patrons sitting behind you can see. • Please limit the use of heavy perfumes or colognes – others around you may be sensitive or have allergies. • Please refrain from eating loud snacks during the performance and unwrap cough drops and candies in advance. • If you need to leave your seat during the show, please do so as quietly as possible.
• So that all may enjoy the show, please refrain from talking during the performance. • Please be kind and remain seated until after the cast bows. The performers work extremely hard to make each performance special. It would be greatly appreciated if you shared your enthusiasm! • If any problem should arise before or during the performance, please ask one of the Ushers to see the House Manager or the Assistant House Manager in the Grand Lobby; someone will assist you promptly.
If you have any other suggestions and/or comments, we’d like to hear from you. Administrative Office: (401) 421-2997, ext. 0 or email info@ppacri.org

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to our “AMAZING” 2013/2014 Season; our 36th Broadway Season features an exceptional line-up of top notch shows from Broadway and beyond! For the fifth consecutive year, Rhode Island Monthly readers named us “Best Theatre” in the magazine’s annual Readers’ Poll, and The Providence Phoenix readers also declared us “Best Theatre Venue” in their annual Best Readers’ Poll. Thank you for these great recognitions. Your ongoing support is integral to PPAC’s success and to making Providence a flourishing city for the performing arts! We are grateful to Taco/The White Family Foundation’s continued sponsorship of our Broadway Series and we are equally appreciative of the loyal support from WPRI 12, media sponsor of our Broadway Season, and Cox Communications, media sponsor of our Contemporary Classics Series. We’d also like to thank returning sponsors Navigant Credit Union, National Grid, and McLaughlin & Moran. The 2013/2014 Taco/The White Family Foundation Broadway Series features the opening of three National Tours. Our season kicks off with the National Tour opening of EVITA; this stunning new production of the beloved musical features some of theatre’s most beautiful songs. Next, ONCE, the eight-time Tony Award® winner, has electrified Broadway with its unforgettable story and ensemble of actors/musicians who play their own instruments on stage. The final National Tour opening is Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which will make its North American debut at the Theatre. GHOST THE MUSICAL, based on the Academy Award-winning film, will move audiences with its iconic love story. FLASHDANCE-THE MUSICAL celebrates the 80s pop culture phenomenon of the original film and WE WILL ROCK YOU is an homage to the music of Queen. The season closes with a two-week run of the nine-time Tony Award® winner THE BOOK OF MORMON. The 2013/2014 Contemporary Classics Series opens with a return three-week engagement of one of Providence’s most “popular” musicals, WICKED. The beloved classic MAN OF LA MANCHA returns for five performances only. Winner of five Tony Awards®, the musical play PETER AND THE STARCATCHER takes audiences on a fantastic journey to answer the question: How did Peter Pan become The Boy Who Never Grew Up? The VETS has been enjoying a wonderful resurgence – this season includes comedy acts like The Capitol Steps and Spank! The Fifty Shades Parody, dance artists like Savion Glover, and rock artists like Chris Cornell. Be sure to stay connected to PPAC while you are on the run! PPAC has launched a FREE state-of-the-art mobile app for iPhone and Droid devices – visit your App Store or Google Play Marketplace to download; we have also launched Print-At-Home for single tickets. On behalf of myself and the staffs at PPAC and PFM, thank you for supporting our shows and our beautiful Theatres! Enjoy the season!

THE VETS: A GREAT SEASON IN A REMARKABLE VENUE! From the hilarity of SPANK! THE FIFTY SHADES PARODY and the political satire of THE CAPITOL STEPS to the kinetic energy of SAVION GLOVER, and from the evocative music of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra (RIPO) and the artistry of the Festival Ballet Providence (FBP), the VETS’ 2013/2014 season offers a range of fantastic performances, with more to be announced throughout the season! After more than sixty years, the VETS is in the process of a major transformation. Under the auspices of Professional Facilities Management (PFM) and the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority (RICCA), this beautiful concert hall has now entered its third phase of renovations; at this stage, the VETS will undergo additional aesthetic enhancements and will expand its recreational space. Three floors of reception space including a ballroom and President’s Club will be introduced with direct access to the Theatre Lobby through the walkway built during the now-completed phase two of renovations. The VETS now features new, state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems and improvements to the backstage area. With these improvements, the venue is now able to host a wider range of artistic guests and performers each season. Since a special Gala concert featuring the renowned Renée Fleming and RIPO in January 2012, the VETS has hosted contemporary artists like Byron Stripling and Regina Spektor, among many others! The Veterans Memorial Auditorium was founded by the Rhode Island Freemasons in 1929, but work was halted due to the Great Depression and did not resume until the end of World War II. On January 27, 1950, the venue officially opened and was dedicated by Rhode Island Governor John O. Pastore as a living memorial to all veterans for their services. Over the years, the venue has been known by various names – including most recently, the VMA Arts and Cultural Center – and has presented an impressive roster of performers, such as the late, celebrated tenor Luciano Pavarotti, actor Hal Holbrook, singer/songwriter Willie Nelson, and alternative rock group Death Cab for Cutie. The VETS has been the primary performance hall for RIPO and the Festival Ballet Providence. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been hailed as an example of magnificent interior design and acoustical excellence.

Annual Fund proceeds also help fund the development of new programs that specifically serve the needs of artists and audiences of demographic, ethnic, cultural, social, and professional diversity. A special Thank You goes to our Community Outreach Program Underwriters who have made significant Annual Fund contributions designated to one or more specific outreach initiatives.

PPAC THEATRE HISTORY SEND MY REGARDS TO PPAC SQUARE –
CELEBRATING ITS 85TH YEAR! The Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) presents a full roster of touring Broadway theatricals and contemporary engagements. PPAC has been the theatre of choice in recent years for opening a number of national tours; this 2013/2014 season, PPAC will open the North American tours of EVITA, ONCE, and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. PPAC celebrates its 85th birthday this season; the Theatre originally opened on October 6, 1928 as the Loew’s State Theatre Movie Palace, and was designed by esteemed Chicago theatre architects George and C.W. Rapp. The then awe-inspiring $2.5 million Theatre featured columns of imported marble, a lavish interior, exquisite gold leaf plasterwork, grand proscenium, and flawless structural integrity. After several decades of sustained success, the Theatre’s attendance declined mid-century with the rise of television’s popularity. The Theatre endured mounting economic hardships and suffered significant damage from the calamitous hurricanes of 1939 and 1954. The venue narrowly escaped demolition in 1970s: Mrs. B.A. (Sylvia) Dario urged her husband, who privately owned the property at the time, to reconsider this decision. In 1978, the Theatre was purchased by founding members Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank, and Textron, Inc., and became a private non-profit corporation. In 1982, the Theatre acquired the permanent name of the Providence Performing Arts Center and has lived on to become one of the most highly-renowned theatres in the nation. PPAC is a 3100 seat venue listed on the National Register of Historic Places; it has also been ranked by Pollstar as one of the Top Venues in the world (2012). The Theatre has been fully-renovated and is constantly being updated to retain its status as a world-class, state-of-the-art venue. The Theatre has earned a special place in Rhode Island history as a beloved, historic landmark while remaining a vital contributor to the City’s economic and cultural growth.

IN REMEMBRANCE OF MRS. DARIO (1911 - 2013) The Board of Trustees and staff of PPAC mark the passing of Mrs. Dario at th 2004 Annual e Mrs. B.A. (Sylvia) PPAC Gala. Dario. She was a tremendous advocate and champion for the Theatre, and we are immensely grateful for everything she did. Joseph W. Walsh, Esq., PPAC Board of Trustees Chairman, said, “Sylvia Dario was one-ofa-kind. She loved the Theatre and everything related to it, and her dedication to PPAC was apparent to anyone who met her. She was a great lady and will be truly missed.” J.L. “Lynn” Singleton, President of PPAC, said, “Mrs. Dario always looked forward to the PPAC Galas and she always charmed her large circle of family and friends to attend with her. At every event, she had a line of fans, eager to say hello. She was unfailingly gracious and future Galas will not be the same without her. P.J. Prokop, PPAC Marketing Director, said, “Mrs. Dario was beloved by all PPAC staff. A woman of style, she was the epitome of true beauty and grace. Sadly, her passing marks the end of an era. We will never forget her.”
