MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Welcome to the Providence Performing Arts Center’s 2017/2018 Season! “Indulge your love of Broadway” with the Rhode Island premieres of seven award-winning shows and the National Tour Launches of LES MISÉRABLES and CIRQUE DREAMS HOLIDAZE. We are very excited about this year’s entire Taco/White Family Foundation Broadway Series and Encore Series schedules, which are sure to create an unforgettable season! With the support of our loyal patrons, donors, underwriters, and sponsors, PPAC undertook one major capital improvement project this year: replacement of the fabric wall covering throughout the entire Theatre. The previous fabric was installed almost 40 years ago and the new fabric is an exact replica. Our Community Outreach Initiative continues to provide free or low cost programs to individuals who would otherwise be unable to experience the magic of live theatre. We would like to thank Textron Charitable Trust for 17 years of continuing support of our ARTS Scholarships Program, which awarded 36 scholarships this year to talented students statewide with financial need. To date, over 540 scholarships have been awarded to Rhode Island students, making it possible for them to attend summer arts programs. PPAC’s Bank of America Arts Showcase brings Rhode Island middle school students, teachers, and artists together, embodying the true spirit of a community arts program. Each year, approximately 8,000 middle school students attend live performances of dance, music, or theatre at PPAC during regular school hours, creating a lasting educational experience that goes beyond the walls of a classroom. Last season, PPAC hosted almost 600 Rhode Island service members and their families to see a variety of shows through our Seats for Service Members program. PPAC’s Big Dreams Begin With Broadway program hosted several dozen “bigs” (mentors) and “littles” (children) from Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State to see MATILDA THE MUSICAL. Next Stop Broadway® is a week-long theatre arts program connecting professional artists with students aged 10-17 who are interested in the performing arts. In partnership with The Robert F. Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation, ten scholarships were granted to children to pursue their interest and develop their artistic talents. FIRSTFED also sponsors From Books to Broadway, a partnership between PPAC and Rhode Island schools which gives students the opportunity to experience the magic of Broadway by underwriting tickets and providing interaction with cast members and shows. Our free Wurlitzer Concert Series is still as popular as ever for young and old alike. This concert series is made possible thanks to the support of our Annual Fund donors. BE SAFE, BE SMART! The PPAC Box Office is your ONLY OFFICIAL ticketing source for tickets to a PPAC show. The only secure way to buy tickets to a PPAC production is via the Box Office window, online at ppacri.org and by phone. Purchasing from unauthorized sources can put you at risk for receiving counterfeit tickets. PATRON SAFETY NOTICE: PPAC requests that all guests arrive as early as possible and bring minimal personal belongings to the Theatre. Guests entering PPAC are subject to search at the discretion of management, which may include pat down or scan by metal detector wands. All bags are subject to search; bags that pass inspection must fit comfortably under a Theatre seat. PPAC does not provide an area to check bags, coats, or any personal belongings. Laptops, briefcases, suitcases, and outside food and beverages are NOT allowed in the building. Any items confiscated will not be returned. Please note that a Providence Police detail is on site at all PPAC events. PPAC Management reserves the right to change the security policy or implement any security measures required for any performance without advance notice. HOUSE MANAGERS are stationed at the House Manager’s Desk on the Orchestra Level in the Grand Lobby. If any problem should arise during the performance, please ask an Usher to see one of the House Managers; someone will assist you promptly. CAMERAS & OTHER RECORDING DEVICES are not allowed in the Theatre. Before coming to the Theatre, please inform someone of your exact seat location, so you may be located quickly in the case of an emergency CHILDREN’S POLICY: To ensure the enjoyment of all patrons, children under the age of six are not permitted to attend PPAC performances unless they are designated as a Family Show. DELAYED ARRIVALS: Please allow adequate time for travel and parking so you may be in your seat before curtain time. Touring shows mandate that we hold latecomers in the Lobby until an appropriate moment in the performance before seating them in order to minimize interruptions. ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES/ELEVATOR/ RESTROOMS: The Arcade, Grand Lobby, and Orchestra Level are fully accessible from the Weybosset Street entrance. An elevator is located on the first floor across from the Grand Lobby and adjacent to the Lobby Lounge. The elevator provides access to the Mezzanine, and First and Second Dress Balconies. Please notify the Box Office in advance of any physical limitations that may restrict seating assignments. First floor restrooms, payphone, and water fountain are fully accessible; restrooms off of the walkway behind First Dress Circle are also fully accessible. Ushers are available to assist patrons. Please ask for additional assistance at the House Manager’s Desk in the Grand Lobby.

The Providence Performing Arts Center (“PPAC”) is a Rhode Island non-business corporation organized by the following: Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank, and Textron, Inc. The affairs of PPAC are administered by a Board of Directors, and representatives of the founders who, together with the Governor of Rhode Island and the Mayor of Providence, presently serve as members of the Board. THE VETS Under the guidance of Professional Facilities Management (PFM) and the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority (RICCA), The VETS recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation making it a state-of-the-art performance venue. PPAC THEATRE HISTORY The Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) presents a full roster of touring Broadway theatricals and contemporary engagements. Since 2008, a total of fifteen National Tours have launched at PPAC, including our 2017/2018 Season Opener LES MISÉRABLES and CIRQUE DREAMS HOLIDAZE. The Theatre has earned a special place in Rhode Island history as a beloved and notable landmark while remaining a vital contributor to the City’s continuing economic and cultural growth. Since opening its doors on October 6, 1928 as the Loew’s State Theatre Movie Palace, the Theatre has astounded visitors with its beauty and grandeur. The Theatre was designed by the esteemed Chicago architectural firm Rapp & Rapp. The architects were guided by Marcus Loew’s philosophy that tickets should be sold “to theatres, not movies.” The Theatre features columns of imported marble, a lavish interior, exquisite gold leaf plasterwork, a grand proscenium, and flawless structural integrity. After opening, the venue enjoyed several decades of success during the Golden Age of Movies; however, attendance declined with the birth of television in the early 1950s. The Theatre faced mounting economic hardships and suffered significant damage from Hurricane Carol in 1954. Under the names of the Loew’s Theatre and Palace Concert Theatre, the venue transitioned from screening films to hosting rock ‘n’ roll concerts. During this time period, the Theatre continued to fall into disrepair and, by the mid-1970s, faced demolition. Fortunately, in 1978, the Theatre was purchased and saved by seven founding members: Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank, and Textron, Inc. The Theatre became a private non-profit corporation and was known as the Ocean State Theatre from 1978 – 1982. It acquired the permanent name of the Providence Performing Arts Center in 1982 and has lived on to become one of the most highly-regarded theatres in the nation. PPAC has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1977. The Theatre has undergone a number of restoration projects in order to preserve the architectural craftsmanship that has amazed audiences since 1928. The theatre has also looked to the future of touring theatricals in their projects, including a full-scale stage house expansion in 1995, the installation of digital marquees, and a specially-commissioned chandelier by renowned designer Dan Dailey in 2004. The addition of the President’s Club, replacement of theatre seats, expansion of the main act curtain, and new this Season, the replacement of wall coverings that match the originals, all have contributed to PPAC’s place as a world-class venue in the heart of Providence. In the spring of 2008, PPAC initiated a pilot Seats for Service Members program to provide preferred orchestra seats to members of Rhode Island’s National Guard and their families for all of our Broadway and Encore performances. The program has been a resounding success The Rhode Island Commodores join members of the USO and is now entering its ninth New England prior to a Broadway performance, where over season! COMMUNITY OUTREACH INITIATIVE The Bank of America Arts Showcase brings Rhode Island middle school students, teachers, and artists together in the true spirit of a community arts program. Performances in the Bank of America Arts Showcase are presented by New England artists. The artists are selected by PPAC based on the cultural diversity and educational value of their productions and the positive, energetic responses of their audiences. All Rhode Island public, private, and parochial school children in grades six through nine are invited to attend Arts Showcase performances. Reservations are required and requests are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets to performances in the Showcase are FREE; however, these tickets are not available to the general public. Middle school teachers who are interested in bringing their students to a Showcase performance can email requests for registration materials to cgoldsmith@ppacri.org All performances begin at 9:40A and last approximately one hour.

October 26, 2017 Garry Krinsky: Toying with Science Ideally suited for the 5th through 7th grade curriculums, this fast-paced and varied program combines circus skills, mime, and audience involvement in the exploration of the scientific principles of gravity, leverage, fulcrums, and simple machines. First commissioned by Boston’s Museum of Science, “Toying with Science” investigates basic scientific concepts and demonstrates that by mastering those concepts, one can produce terrific results!

February 8, 2018 Andy Kelly’s Jazz Ambassadors: The History of Jazz Founded in 2004 by Andrew Kelly, the Jazz Ambassadors have traveled throughout the Northeast and internationally to present jazz education programs. Students will learn about the great composers and performers of jazz as well as the instruments used to create this unique American music. Incorporating many recognizable musical numbers, the musicians will show how jazz music surrounds us daily, even though we may not realize it!

January 4, 2018 Kaleidoscope Theatre: B.U.L.L.Y. – Level 2 (Better Understanding by Listening and Learning about You) This production focuses attention on the dangers of aggressive behavior that many children face every day in both public and private school systems and offers viable solutions and options on how to handle these situations effectively. Performed by young actors 12 to 18 years of age, this performance is geared specifically toward middle school students.

March 29, 2018 Providence Ballet Theatre: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs This original production of the classic Grimm’s fairy tale transforms the traditional story into a journey to discover the nature of true beauty, loyalty, and companionship through creative exploration of movement and sound. Students will experience creativity, imagination, and individuality in this performance, encouraging them to participate in conversation and their personal interpretation of the story.

PPAC SHOW SIGNATURES While a show is at PPAC, the Theatre’s backstage is abuzz with excitement. Each visiting company or artist leaves a memento – a mural of an individual show’s artwork and company signatures – on the backstage walls. Whenever people visit the backstage, they are impressed by the range of “show signatures” that decorate these walls. We are pleased to offer our patrons a behind-the-scenes look at these pieces. The backstage murals first started when the National Tour of Annie performed at PPAC in 2001, but took off when the National Tour of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was here in 2003. Prior to 2001, touring road crews would go up to the projection booth and draw a more basic version of the show logo. The tour’s house operators would then sign the artwork. When General Manager Alan Chille gave tours of the building, he brought guests to the booth and people would always get excited about seeing the show logos and reminisce about the various productions they had seen. Former Technical Director Bill Brackett thought that since hardly anyone got to visit the projection booth, it would be better to have the companies create art on the backstage walls, as more people accessed the backstage area. Each visiting company was asked to select a cast or crew member to create a mural. Our Show Signatures project has been evolving beautifully ever since!
