The Chairman We missed you and welcome back to the Providence Performing Arts Center for the 2021/2022 season. The COVID-19 pandemic created an economic and public health crisis not seen in the world for over a hundred years. Live entertainment venues were catastrophically affected by this emergency which closed our doors to the public in March 2020. The pandemic also changed the way we interact with our patrons, our co-workers, and our friends and family. Keeping you safe in the Theatre is our 100% commitment to you. PPAC is now a Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) STAR™ accredited facility which is the gold standard for cleaning, disinfection, and infectious disease prevention. PPAC has implemented a number of new health and safety precautions to keep our patrons and our staff safe. We have installed a bipolar ionization air filtration system and added hand sanitizers throughout the Theatre. PPAC implemented contactless ticket scanning, food and drink ordering, and payment processing. All of our event staff are fully vaccinated. We are constantly looking for ways to improve the Theatre experience and keep everyone in attendance healthy and happy. As it was for many of you, many of our Community Outreach programs were put on hold or made virtual over the last 18 months. Experience PPAC creates the opportunity for every 10th grade student in Rhode Island to see a select touring Broadway performance at no cost. Arts Showcase brings elementary and middle school students to PPAC to attend live performances of dance, music, or theater during regular school hours. These two programs went virtual last season and will continue to be for the upcoming season. The upside is that this allowed teachers from all over Rhode Island to share the magic of Theatre with many more of their students. PPAC celebrated the 25th anniversary of the ARTS Scholarships Program, which awarded 40 scholarships this year to talented Rhode Island students with financial need to attend a summer arts program. We would like to thank Textron Charitable Trust for 21 years of continuous support! In early August, PPAC successfully and safely hosted Next Stop Broadway® which is a week-long theater arts program connecting Broadway professionals with students ages 10-17 who are interested in the performing arts. In partnership with The Robert F. Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation, ten scholarships were granted to children to pursue their interest and develop their artistic talents. FIRSTFED also sponsors From Books to Broadway, a partnership between PPAC and Rhode Island schools designed to expose students to Broadway performances; this program was on hiatus last season, but we are excited to welcome it back this year. In 2019, Disney Musicals in Schools selected PPAC to partner with them to build sustainable theater programs over the course of several years in under-resourced Providence public elementary schools. This program was put on hold but will continue to evolve as schools reopen. We look forward to once again hosting spring and fall Wurlitzer Concerts that are free to the public and bringing back Rhode Island service members and their families to see a show sponsored by our Seats for Service Members program. The Big Dreams Begin With Broadway program will begin to again host “bigs” (mentors) and “littles” (children) from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island this season. We are thrilled to reopen the Theatre to our patrons and having you back to enjoy Broadway shows, concerts, and other entertainment on our stage. Welcome back to PPAC!
Joseph W. Walsh, Esq. Chairman, Board of Directors

The President & CEO Welcome back to the Providence Performing Arts Center! We are thrilled that Broadway and YOU are back at PPAC; we are celebrating Broadway’s return to Providence with a spectacular line-up of smash hit shows in our Taco/The White Family Foundation Broadway Series, Encore Series, and Broadway Specials. I would like to thank our title sponsor, Taco/The White Family Foundation for their long-standing support of the productions in our Broadway Series. We are grateful to Broadway season media sponsor WPRI CBS 12 and Encore Series media sponsor Cox Media for their continuing support. I would also like to thank title sponsor BankNewport and media sponsors ABC 6 and NOW 93.3 for their support of our Family Night performances. Special thanks also goes to Navigant Credit Union for sponsoring AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN and HarborOne Bank for sponsoring BLUE MAN GROUP. We would also like to welcome Consigli Construction as a new sponsor with us this season; more information to come. Our 2021/2022 Taco/The White Family Foundation Broadway Series opens with the National Tour launch of PRETTY WOMAN: THE MUSICAL which will mark our 20th National Tour opening since 2008. We are proud of this exciting milestone and are looking forward to hosting more national tour openings in the future. When a national tour opens at PPAC, it generates an economic boost not only to the Theatre but to the city of Providence as well. Next up, HAMILTON returns for a two-week engagement. The Taco/The White Family Foundation Broadway Series features four more hit productions: Drama Desk Award winner for Best Musical THE PROM, the Tony Award winner for Best Choreography AIN’T TOO PROUD – THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE TEMPTATIONS, the Tony Award winner for Best Revival of a Musical, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s OKLAHOMA!, and the Lincoln Center Theater Production of Lerner & Loewe’s MY FAIR LADY. Our Encore Series features the return of two audience favorites and a brand-new musical. The Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning modern classic RENT – THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY FAREWELL TOUR opens the Encore Series. AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN is a new musical inspired by the romantic film and the musical is set in Newport, Rhode Island! BLUE MAN GROUP returns in May 2022; the men are still blue but the rest is all new! Our Broadway Specials include the delightful family favorite CIRQUE DREAMS HOLIDAZE and two shows that were originally scheduled for the Spring of 2020 — we know that Providence has been eagerly awaiting these engagements as much as we have — the 50th anniversary (N.A.) tour of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and the Providence Premiere of DEAR EVAN HANSEN. PPAC has taken every measure possible to ensure patrons’ health and safety, so that we can enjoy live theatre together again. Visit ppacri.org/healthandsafety for current information on our safety measures; these may change throughout the season. “We Look to You”* from THE PROM was a very special song for our staff over the past year and half, especially the lyrics “The curtain goes up / and every now and then it feels as if we’re coming home again/ yes, coming home again.” So, as the curtain rises, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! It is great to welcome you all “home again!” Warmest Regards,
J.L. “Lynn” Singleton President & CEO, Providence Performing Arts Center * Music: Matthew Sklar, Lyrics: Chad Beguelin.

PERFORMANCE
BEYOND EXPECTATIONS Like PPAC, the teams at Sansiveri, Kimball & Co., LLP and SK Wealth Management, LLC recognizes the importance of performance that exceeds expectations. Whether it is preparing the historic theatre for an opening night production that will bring a sold-out house to its feet, or making the right decision with your investments, performance is everything. To achieve and maintain peak performance — in business, in the arts . . . in life — requires dedication, perseverance, and teamwork. The members of PPAC exemplify those qualities, and that makes our partnership a natural fit.

2020 & 2021 Annual Fund Campaign for
Community Outreach
Each year, the Providence Performing Arts Center is faced with the challenge of raising enough funds to offset the cost of producing and presenting the valuable programs we offer as part of our Community Outreach Initiative. The Annual Fund is the vehicle that makes that possible. Annual Fund proceeds also help fund the development of new programs that specifically serve the needs of artists and audiences of demographic, ethnic, cultural, social, and professional diversity. A special THANK YOU goes to our Community Outreach Program underwriters who have made significant Annual Fund contributions designated to one or more specific outreach initiatives.

For
39 years, the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) has been "home" for presenting top-notch national Broadway tours. Every night a show is on stage at PPAC is like an opening night, especially at the moment when the lights dim and the curtain rises to reveal our magnificent stage.
by architectural firm Rapp & Rapp, has always been a visual marvel, and has astounded visitors with its beauty and grandeur. For more than nine decades, the Loew’s Theatre Building has not only survived, but ultimately flourished, while undergoing various name changes, storm damage, and ongoing architectural restoration.
This season, the Loew’s Theatre Building (the historic home of PPAC) will be celebrating its 93rd anniversary with a fresh façade! During the winter of 2020/2021, we installed new, custom terra cotta tiles and exterior lighting to the theatre’s Weybosset Street façade. This is the first time the façade has ever undergone a restoration project. The meticulous and historically accurate restoration and installation was performed by Consigli Construction, with beautiful lighting designed by Evelyn Audet Lighting Design, LLC. Preserve RI and the RIHPHC recently honored PPAC with a Rhody Award for a Historic Preservation Project.
After its opening in 1928, the Loew’s Theatre Building enjoyed several decades of success as a premiere movie palace. However, the venue began experiencing financial hardships and declining attendance with the rise of television’s popularity in the early 1950s. The Theatre also suffered damage from the New England Hurricane of 1938 and then Hurricane Carol in 1954. The damage from Hurricane Carol resulted in the removal of the Theatre’s original Morton pipe organ.
When Pretty Woman: The Musical opens its National Tour at PPAC in October 2021 and kicks off our 2021/2022 season, it will be the twentieth national tour to open here since 2008. This distinction of being the theatre of choice for twenty national tour openings has made us a nationally recognized and wellrespected cultural institution located in the heart of Providence. The Loew’s Theatre Building, now known as the Providence Performing Arts Center, opened on October 6, 1928. The Theatre, designed 40
In 1982, Lincoln W.N. Pratt assisted PPAC with finding our “Mighty Wurlitzer;” the 5/21 Wurlitzer Organ was built in 1927 and has five keyboards, twenty-one ranks and percussion that can produce many orchestral sounds, as well as sound effects that can be utilized when accompanying silent films. It is one of only three five-manual keyboard consoles built by Wurlitzer. The instrument was purchased by PPAC and has resided in the Theatre since 1982. Lincoln W.N. Pratt was our House Organist from 1982 until his passing in 1998. World-renowned organist and silent film accompanist Peter Edwin Krasinski became our House Organist in September 2020. We have worked with Mr. Krasinski on producing
Theatre History seasonal recorded concerts for all to enjoy for free; you can view these Wurlitzer concerts at ppacri.org/wurlitzer In 1972, the Theatre changed its name to the Palace Concert Photo courtesy of Peter Edwin Krasinski Theatre, where it mainly presented rock concerts. The venue continued to fall into disrepair and to lose revenue. In 1976, through the efforts of Mrs. B.A. (Sylvia) Dario, the Theatre re-opened as the Ocean State Theatre, where it returned to its historic movie palace roots. The Ocean State Theatre experienced limited success, and as a result, the building’s owner, B.A. Dario, considered demolishing the historic Theatre.
Local community figures, including then Governor J. Joseph Garrahy, then Chairman of PPAC’s Board of Trustees Bruce Sundlun (Governor of Rhode Island, 1991 – 1995), then Providence Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci, Jr., and Mrs. Dario, fought valiantly to save the building. Mrs. Dario said, “I remember coming here as a young person and thinking I was walking into a fairyland. I would like my little grandson to bring his grandson here. This will be here long after I am gone.” They began to discuss transforming the Ocean State Theatre into a center for the arts to preserve the Theatre and to also help renew the downtown Providence area. In 1977, the Loew’s Theatre Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1978, the Theatre was purchased and

saved by seven founding members: Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank, and Textron, Inc. The Ocean State Theatre became a non-profit private corporation and was called the Ocean State Performing Arts Center. In 1982, the Ocean State Performing Arts Center changed its name to the Providence Performing Arts Center, as a way of honoring the City’s commitment to saving the venue. As the Providence Performing Arts Center, the Theatre has become a world-class venue through the efforts of past and current board members and administrative staff, making it one of the most successful, not-for-profit theatres in the United States. Significant projects include a full-scale stage house expansion in 1995 and an historically

accurate restoration of the Grand Lobby, Arcade, and House. These improvements allowed the Theatre to present large-scale touring productions like THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, MISS SAIGON, WICKED, and Disney’s THE LION KING in Providence. In 2000, the state-of-the-art electronic marquee was first “lit” by actor Robert Urich. In 2002, the Theatre commissioned former RISD professor Dan Dailey to design a magnificent chandelier, which hangs in the House Proper. The chandelier was installed in 2004. In 2005, the first-ever elevator was installed for patrons. In recent years, the carpet and wall fabric, faithful to their original designs, have been replaced. The Theatre was brought into the digital age with the installation of LED display screens on the Marquee and video digital boards in the Arcade in 2012.

Community Outreach & Engagement DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS Disney Musicals in Schools (DMIS) builds sustainable musical theatre programs in under-resourced public elementary schools by providing free performance materials and free professional development to select Title 1 elementary schools annually. REIGNITE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES The Reignite Professional Development Series, a new initiative funded by Disney, is a content video library for both our Disney Musicals in Schools elementary teachers and other elementary educators across the state. Each video is approximately 5-12 minutes in length and focuses on performance and technical theatre-based skills, covering all aspects of putting on a musical with a low to no-budget framework. This library will serve educators who teach in under-resourced schools and may be looking to introduce their students to the arts but do not know how or where to begin. Additionally, the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) is partnering with us and the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) to make these videos available to elementary teachers throughout the state in a segmented fashion for continuing education credits (PLUs) toward educators’ recertifications. This will be launching in March 2022…stay tuned.

ARTS SHOWCASE

The Arts Showcase is again committed to bringing school performances at no cost to the K-8 students of Rhode Island via our virtual platform in 2021-22. We began delivering pre-recorded live performances filmed at PPAC last year due to COVID-19 and were able to reach more students than ever before. Due to the uncertainty of field trips among school districts, we decided to stay safe and virtual for another year. We have been working with our national and local artists to have a fully filmed schedule of performances in place which will be released between October 2021 and April 2022. Schools/teachers must register to participate. For our lineup of performances, visit www.ppacri.org/outreach/arts-showcase.
EXPERIENCE PPAC Experience PPAC is PPAC’s flagship education initiative which ensures that every 10th grade student in the state can attend a select touring Broadway performance with their school at no cost, with busing provided. COVID-19 challenged us to reimagine how to deliver Broadway to Rhode Island students in 2020; we ultimately were able to license filmed Broadway productions and sent viewing links to the schools. This year, we will be sending licensed shows again, in addition to creating some live Broadway performance opportunities for students to attend. For more information, visit www.ppacri.org/outreach/experience-ppac. Experience PPAC photos by Samantha Gaus.

Seats for Service Members In the spring of 2008, PPAC initiated a pilot Seats for Service Members program to provide preferred orchestra seats to members of Rhode Island’s National Guard and their families for all of the performances in our Taco/The White Family Foundation Broadway Series and Encore Series. Now in its thirteenth season, we only hope that the Seats for Service Members program will continue to let the thousands of men and women, who unselfishly dedicate themselves to protecting our country, know how much we greatly appreciate their outstanding sacrifices and courageous efforts. If you are interested in sponsoring this program, please contact Claudia Zompa, Director of Development, at czompa@ppacri.org or (401) 574-3122.
