LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to the Providence Performing Arts Center’s 2011/2012 Broadway season. We have an incredible schedule of shows for you this season including ROCK OF AGES, LES MISÉRABLES, and MARY POPPINS. We invite you to celebrate with us after the performance of MARY POPPINS at our Annual Gala on Saturday, February 18, 2012, so save the date! With the generous support of our loyal patrons, donors, underwriters, and sponsors, PPAC has made tremendous advances in completing major facility projects that increase the comfort and enhance the Theatre experience of our patrons. Some of these projects include the renovation of the Box Office, Lobby Lounge improvements, recessed concession stands which creates more floor space for patrons, and the installation of new LED screens in the Lobby and Arcade. All of these projects, and others like them, are possible thanks to your valuable support. Our Community Outreach Initiative continues to provide free or low-cost programs to individuals who would otherwise be unable to experience the magic of live theatre. We gratefully acknowledge the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the City of Providence for supporting these programs. We thank Textron for over 11 years of support of our ARTS Scholarship Program, which awards 25 scholarships to underprivileged students statewide. To date, over 375 scholarships have been awarded to Rhode Island students, making it possible for them to attend summer arts programs.

Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation, each year 10 scholarships are offered to children who would otherwise be unable to afford Camp tuition. The Robert F. Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation also sponsors From Books to Broadway – an educational partnership between PPAC and Rhode Island schools, which is designed to expose students to the magic of Broadway performances with a chance to “meet and greet” cast members. PPAC’s Arts Showcase, made possible in part by Bank of America’s ongoing sponsorship, brings Rhode Island middle school students, teachers, and artists together and personifies the true spirit of a community arts program. Each year, approximately 10,000 middle school students attend live performances of dance, music, or theatre at PPAC during regular school hours, creating a lasting educational experience that goes beyond the walls of a classroom. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I whole-heartedly thank you for your patronage and support of our presentations and programs. Your attendance and support is vital to PPAC. Our free spring and fall Wurlitzer Concert Series is still as popular as ever, with a record turnout last season. PPAC’s 2011/2012 Broadway Series includes seven vibrant productions, the majority of which are brand new to the Ocean State! Our POPS-PHIL-PPAC Series continues with a performance by acclaimed jazz musician Chris Botti and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. Dance specials include MOMIX: BOTANICA, which is part of the FirstWorks Festival 2011. Festival Ballet Providence returns to perform the holiday classic THE NUTCRACKER and the romantic tragedy of SWAN LAKE on the PPAC stage this season. The Veterans Memorial Auditorium, now known as “The VETS,” is undergoing phase one of its first major state of the art renovation plan, due to be completed in December 2011. The VETS Gala Concert: An Evening with Renée Fleming and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra in January 2012 will celebrate the rededication of The VETS. Festival Ballet’s The Nutcracker DECEMBER 9 – 11, 2011

Festival Ballet Providence, Rhode Island’s premiere ballet company, presents THE NUTCRACKER. This beloved holiday tale of a Nutcracker doll given to Clara takes the young girl from a grand Christmas party, complete with a tree that grows 25 feet in height, to a midnight battle of toy soldiers versus giant mice led by the villainous Mouse Queen. Clara’s protector, a life-sized Nutcracker, leads her through a snow-covered forest and dozens of dancing Swarovski snowflakes to the Kingdom of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier introduce the couple to brightly-costumed dancers from around the world. Festival Ballet & PPAC’s Swan Lake MAY 11 – 12, 2012

Festival Ballet Providence and PPAC presents what has been hailed as “the most impressive, moving, and enduring” of the classical ballets, SWAN LAKE. It is the story of good and evil, of beauty and love. An evil sorcerer has put a curse on young women so that by day they live as swans in a lake of their tears, but at night they are women again. Only true love can break the curse and free the Swan Queen. The critically acclaimed staging of SWAN LAKE by FBP Artistic Director Mihailo Djuric and Milica Bijelic, based on the original by Petipa and Ivanov, returns to Providence this season for the first time in four years.

CHANGES AT THE VETERANS MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM

In the spring of 2011, Professional Facilities Management (PFM) and the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority (RICCA) announced that the Veterans Memorial Auditorium would be referred to as “The VETS” and unveiled a new logo, designed by Malcolm Grear Designers, for the venue during a press conference. During the summer and fall of 2011, The VETS will undergo much-needed theatre renovations. The VETS Gala Concert: An Evening with Renée Fleming and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra (RIPO) in January 2012 celebrates the completion of the first phase of renovations and reaffirms The VETS as a cultural center in Providence.

A BRIEF HISTORY

The Veterans Memorial Auditorium (The VETS) has been a cultural staple in the state of Rhode Island since its inception in the 1920s. Conceived by the Rhode Island Freemasons, The VETS was to be the first performing arts venue in the state; however, the Great Depression halted work on the structure in 1929. After World War II, the venue was completed and dedicated as a living memorial for all veterans for their services.

Since its completion, The VETS has boasted such performers as Tony Bennett, the late Luciano Pavarotti, RIPO, and Festival Ballet Providence. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The VETS is renowned for its intimacy, excellent acoustics, and beautiful interior design.

This program is an educational partnership designed to expose students to Broadway shows through attendance at a show combined with a “meet and greet” with the cast members of that show. Combining sonnets and scenes from Shakespeare’s plays with a great American art form -- gospel music -- this performance will explore the joys and pain of the human experience. A Performance of the Arts to Stop Bullying

In collaboration with STOP BULLYING NOW! RI, URI Professor Rene de la Garza, Opera Providence, and various emerging local talents, this performance incorporates original poetry, music, and dance into an awareness theme of bullying prevention. Transforming these art forms into a socially relevant message, students will be educated on how to recognize and learn appropriate responses to various forms of bullying.

Head and Heart: Making the Right Decisions

Using four different dances, this program looks at several difficult social decisions we are often faced with in life. Through the movement and emotion of dance, issues of heartbreak, loneliness, and conformity are addressed in contrasts of sadness and whimsical humor, with ample food for thought for the middle school audience.
