Joanne Elliott – Century 21 Veterans
Joanne served in the US Navy from 1978 to 2006 and retired as a Chief Petty Officer (E-7). Her rate was Yeoman and she also held a Top Secret, SCI clearance from 1999 until her retirement in 2006. Approximately two and a half years were active duty and the rest was Reserve. Joanne was stationed at NASJRB Willow Grove in Warminster, PA. As a Reservist, she performed Active Duty in Keflavik, Iceland, Cuba, and Bermuda. When recalled to active duty, she served in Stuggart, Germany; Naples, Italy; Vicenza, Italy; and London, England. In Naples, Joanne was assigned as the JULLS Coordinator where she was responsible for the collection of lessons learned for compilation into the Joint After Action Report for the Joint Chief of Staff and assisted with the archival of historical data. When assigned at 5ATAF, she was the Navy Cell Chief managing the arrival and departures of assigned personnel. In London, Joanne was the VITA Coordinator and led a team of ten to complete tax returns for active duty, reserve, and civilians stationed in London and outlying areas. Joanne personally completed over 200 complex income tax returns. She was assigned to Stuggart, Germany as the INTEL Administrative Supervisor Intelligence Plans and Requirements Division.

Joanne is currently the National President of the Naval Enlisted Reserve Association (with a membership of over 10,000). Additionally, she is the Commander of the John Billington VFW Post 6495 in Levittown, PA, and its Service Officer. She is also the service officer for the Jesse Soby American Legion Post in Langhorne, PA. Joanne has been a licensed real estate agent for over 42 years and works out of Century 21 Veterans in Bristol, PA. Being in the military has provided Joanne with many different skill sets and tools to thrive in real estate. Joanne completed over 20 transactions in 2019, so we asked her what she was able to take from her military experience and apply it to real estate. She says “I complete my missions and assignments in a timely manner, this I apply to everything in my daily life. Attention to detail is very important to me. I have a tendency to check and double-check and to follow through to make sure that whoever is on the receiving end does the same. I lead by example and make sure that everyone is treated as I would want to be treated. Because of this, my clients refer new clients to me and return to me for their next sale or purchase. Ken Murawski – Century 21 Veterans
Ken joined the US Navy in 1979 on what he thought would be a four-year “let’s check it out” kind of thing. He was promoted to his final rank of Senior Chief, (pay-grade E-8) in 2002 and retired in 2005 after 26 years of service. Ken was a P-3 Flight Engineer so his deployments were many and varied but included submarine hunting in the North Atlantic and Western Pacific, drug interdiction missions in Central and South America, and humanitarian relief efforts as far away as Africa. During his career, Ken was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, three Navy Achievement medals, an Aviation Warfare Specialist designation and numerous other awards and campaign ribbons. He was also designated a Naval Air-crewman and as a P-3 Flight Engineer, accumulated over 4,000 tactical and training hours. His most significant accomplishment while serving on active duty was being promoted to Chief, and then Senior Chief. Being a Chief in the Navy has no civilian comparison so it’s a bit difficult to describe other than to say it’s a management position with a lot of leverage.

Ken has been a licensed real estate agent since 1995. “I thought my Naval Career was going to end in 2000 which begged the question ‘now what?’ I was always interested in real estate and had I not been promoted in 1998, I would have retired in 2000 and gone into real estate full time.” Turns out, Ken was promoted twice and stayed in the Navy until 2005. Fortunately, the promotions put him into management positions which paved the path to owning his own company. “Two days after I retired from the Navy I took a position with Keller Williams as their training director and shortly thereafter moved into the team leader role. Nothing like being in charge of an office with over 150 agents during a recession, but you do learn a lot about people and more importantly yourself during adverse times. As the markets were coming back I found myself wanting to open my own office. Don’t get me wrong, the people in real estate that taught me the business were terrific and the companies I had been with are awesome, but I always felt that we could build a company that could give an agent all the tools they needed to succeed. In 2013 my business partner Melanie Banks and I opened an independent real estate company and in 2015 were awarded our first Century 21 franchise.” Ken says, “We chose the name Century 21 Veterans because when we first opened our doors, half of us were either veterans, had veteran family members or strong ties to the veteran community. In five years, Melanie and I have grown a very small office into three; in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey and are continuing to grow. We both started out as agents, so understanding what we liked and didn’t like about the business was easy to define, and building systems to suit the agents’ weaknesses gives them the opportunity to focus on their strengths. Our agents seem to like it.”
