What do you think about companies that sell maintenance packages? D’Auria: Most of the pre-
ventative maintenance packages companies sell are complete crap. There is no ‘servicing a system.’ You can clear an outdoor condenser coil but as far as starting your heater, there is nothing to check or change until something goes wrong. What are the most common things that go wrong? D’Auria: With a heating system, the pressure switchers and igniters are the most common situations you run into in the beginning of the heating season. The air conditioning is a little more complicated. When you get a heat wave, these systems aren’t made to operate in those conditions and it causes the capacitor to explode. Bad fuses in the electrical disconnect is also a common issue. What do you prefer - hot weather or c old weather? D’Auria: I hate the cold. I would rather be on a roof in 110-degree weather than freezing cold. When people are purchasing their HVAC system, what brands do you think are the best? 38 • September 2019
D’Auria: There are a lot of good brands out there. They all
come with the same warranty length. I’m a Goodman dealer and I like their product. I can provide an efficient system, at an affordable price with a ten-year warranty compared to others who are trying to sell people a Carrier or Trane system where the cost of the equipment is a lot higher for no reason. You don’t get a better warranty so what’s the point? With the ten-year warranties throughout the manufacturers there is no right or wrong way to go. What part about your job makes you happiest? D’Auria: Being able to have the freedom to do things with my
son. From a business standpoint, I enjoy providing service to people. It gives me satisfaction when someone calls and I can fix their problem. Especially when they tell me another customer has recommended me. Sometimes I can save these customers thousands of dollars especially in situations where another HVAC business may have lied to them.

What are your biggest challenges? D’Auria: Employees. I have great employees but it’s very hard to find more employees. Unfortunately, especially with the construction and service industry, it’s been hit by the opioid epidemic.
