Cochlear launches Cochlear™ Nucleus® Aqua+ the world’s first waterproof behind the ear solution for cochlear implants users – across Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) The Cochlear™ Nucleus® Aqua+ is a formfitting, easy-to-use, versatile accessory that allows Cochlear™ Nucleus® 5 and Nucleus 6 Sound Processor users to continue hearing while taking a bath, enjoying water activities, swimming or snorkeling. Aqua+ is a flexible, watertight sleeve that simply fits over the sound processor behind the ear. A speciallydesigned waterproof coil then connects to the sound processor within the sleeve. This is the most discreet and comfortable solution on the market (no need for cumbersome bulky extra parts or extra wiring), the manufacturer explains. While the Nucleus 5 and Nucleus 6 Sound Processors already have a high water resistance rating the Aqua+ provides much higher protection with its IP68 water resistance rating. It is safe to use in all types of water including in chlorinated swimming pools, fresh water lakes and rivers, oceans and soapy water. Additionally, the Aqua+ is a reusable solution allowing users to use the form-fitting sleeve numerous times without having to replace it. news update The Cochlear™ Baha® Attract System – an invisible link to better hearing
Important new product launches at BAA
The new Cochlear™ Baha® Attract System uses magnets to connect the sound processor to the BI300 implant. The sound processor attaches to the external magnet which transmits the sound to the internal magnet, hidden under the skin. Over 2500 patients have already benefited from the solution highlighting the benefits of the Baha Attract System. The company reports excellent results: • The professionals report a straightforward surgery without the need for extensive bone removal while the implant has good osseointegration. The fitting procedures are easy and the new Feedback Analyser decreases the risk of feedback. • The adult patients are pleased with hearing performance (both in quiet and in noise environments) while retention is good without compromising comfort over long wearing periods. • The paediatric population obtains similar benefits and outcomes while it provides peace of mind to the parents knowing this unique solution offers a transition path if the patient hearing needs change. The market feedback confirms the Cochlear™ Baha® Attract System is a success: it meets the patient needs in terms of hearing performance, wearing comfort and minimal soft tissue complications.

news update Visit to Myanmar – November 2014 In November last year, Professor Maung Maung Khaing, Head of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Yangon ENT Hospital invited Bevan Allen RHAD FSHAA and Dr Tony Sirimanna, Consultant Audiological Physician at Great Ormond Street Hospital, to give lectures in tinnitus management and audiological medicine to residents, ENT trainees and nurses at the hospital. These were well received, being the very first of their kind in Myanmar (Burma). The trip was sponsored by the Hearing Conservation Council who is also inviting Myanmar to continue to support the WHO in its endeavours to promote the Prevention of Hearing Impairment. For a population of 50.5 million people there are only about 175 ENT surgeons in Myanmar and there are no properly trained audiologists or speech and language therapists, although hearing testing is carried out by partly trained staff, including doctors. Currently, hearing aids are not freely available for anyone diagnosed with a permanent significant hearing loss. If a hearing aid is necessary then it has to be found from a private source, the cost of which is well beyond the reach of most working Burmese people. The ulitmate aim is to provide training for audiologists and speech and language therapists in Myanmar itself if appropriate funding can be sourced. DiaLog: informing patient care Presenting binax from Siemens: clinically proven to exceed normal hearing in difficult listening situations In January, Siemens Hearing Instruments UK will unveil their next generation of BestSound Technology, binax, which promises to take binaural hearing systems to a new level. Two independent clinical studies* have successfully proved that in the most challenging hearing environments, such as at a cocktail-party, binax wearers are able to understand speech better than people with normal hearing. Thanks to an unwavering development of the e2e wireless technology pioneered by Siemens, Siemens hearing aids can now exchange audio signals with one another to deliver superb speech clarity in noisy situations while maintaining spatial information, says the company. Wind noise management is again improved to ensure comfort for wearers in windy environments. All of this takes place fully automatically, and without compromising battery life; all features work with exceptionally low power consumption, even the new binaural features. For wearers, it provides a whole new binaural experience. *University of Northern Colorado, 2014; Oldenburg Hörzentrum, 2013: Speech Reception Thresholds (SRT) in cocktail-party situations improved up to 2.9 dB for wearers with mild to moderate hearing loss using Carat binax or Pure binax hearing instruments with narrow directionality, compared to people with normal hearing. Through their partner network across the UK, Starkey will be offering current and former members of the RAF as well as their families and friends the opportunity to benefit from exclusive hearing packages. Starkey is extremely proud to support the people that have served and are currently serving our country. This initiative will be fronted by a marketing campaign to raise awareness to RAF Benevolent Fund members of the importance of looking after their hearing. The campaign will feature the first member to benefit from the service, Wally Banford, 84. Wally’s visit to Starkey Hearing Technologies where he was fitted with the latest hearing technology helped launch a new partnership between Starkey at the RAF Benevolent Fund. “Getting old isn’t for sissies. I didn’t want hearing aids! I didn’t want them whistling or stuck behind my ears. Aesthetically, it’s just not pleasing. But hearing loss is isolating,” said Wally. “These small hearing aids are just what I was looking for. Now, I can hear better and continue to be sociable and stay active.” “Starkey Hearing Technologies are very excited to be a chosen partner of the RAF Benevolent Fund,” said Roger Lewin, Managing Director, Starkey Hearing Technologies. “We are very proud to offer our ‘Just Hear’ package to support the people that have served and are currently serving our country.” The initiative comes fresh on the heels of a recent Royal British Legion report showing that veterans under the age of 75 are more than three times as likely to suffer hearing loss than the general public. Philippa Gullen, RAF Benevolent Fund Head of Corporate Fundraising, said: “We hope that this partnership benefits veterans and their families who might be in need of hearing aids and we appreciate Starkey’s support of the RAF Benevolent Fund.” To find out more contact a local Area Manager, visit http://www.justhear.co.uk/rafbf.php or the RAF Benevolent Fund www.rafbf.org.uk or keep in touch through Starkey’s social media channels. Changes at Otometrics UK David C M Smithson, General Manager, GN Otometrics UK, has accepted the post of International Sales Director for South East ASIA (SEA) and Australia/New Zealand (ANZ) based out of Singapore. He said: “It is with a mixture of emotions that I have to advise that I am moving on from my position as General Manager at GN Otometrics UK. This is an exciting opportunity and one which I cannot turn down. The mixture of emotions is due to a number of factors. The first of these is that I am very sad at leaving the UK business as I have made a lot of very good friends and colleagues in this sector of the UK marketplace. Another positive side to this is that, for some time, National Sales Manager, Matt Murray, has been developed as my successor in the UK and it is with tremendous pleasure that I can announce that he will be taking over my General Manager responsibilities upon my departure. There are also exciting times ahead with even more innovations. We presented on, and demonstrated the upcoming ‘OTOSCAN’ digital ear scanning solution at BAA this year, which could hit the market later in 2015. This is just one of the many innovations that we are working on at Otometrics and look forward to revealing them to you when they are ready to be introduced. Watch this space! It has been an absolute pleasure being acquainted with you and with your organisations. I have no doubt that our paths will cross at some time in the future and I very much look forward to that occurrence.” For further information contact: GN Otometrics, Tel: +44 (0)870 9000 675, Email: info-uk@gnotometrics.com Web: www.otometrics.co.uk

news update PATH medical GmbH announces winner of ‘Trip to Germany’ prize PATH medical GmbH has announced the winner of its competition to win a trip to Germany (all expenses paid) drawn at the EUHA congress on Friday 17 October. The lucky winner was Serguei Silva from Porto Alegre in Brazil who entered the draw at the PATH medical stand. Patricia Tedesco, PATH medical International Sales Manager for the Americas (pictured far left), said: “Serguei was absolutely delighted when we told him saying, what great news indeed! I am very happy! Thank you!” With over 350 entries competition participants were asked questions relating to the new developments in the extensive PATH medical range including the patented FMDPOAE technology (Frequency Modulated Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emission) a new method used to overcome the fine structure effect leading to unwanted ‘dips’ in the OAE response. In addition participants were asked about the multi-frequency DPOAE which reduces DPOAE test duration by up to four times, achieved by presenting two pairs of DP stimulus simultaneously in both ears. Conventional DPOAE recording only allows one pair of DP stimuli to be presented at a time, so this new development is extremely efficient, saving valuable test time. This works particularly effectively with the DPOAE threshold estimation providing a cochlear audiogram (for further usage in hearing aid adaption) in an objective way without the need of a co-operative patient.
