Associate Professor Jim Patrick awarded Order of Australia for cochlear implant development Cochlear asks readers to join them in congratulating Associate Professor Jim Patrick, Chief Scientist at Cochlear™ Limited, as he has been awarded the Order of Australia for distinguished service to science through the development of the cochlear implant; to biomedical research and engineering innovation; and to education and professional associations. In the Australian honours system appointments to the Order of Australia confer the highest recognition for outstanding achievement and service. The Australian system of honours and awards was established in 1975. At this time the Queen approved the institution of the Order of Australia: ‘an Australian society of honour for according recognition to Australian citizens and other persons for achievement or meritorious service’. In 1981, he was a founding member of Cochlear Limited, which is a global leader in implantable hearing solutions and where he is currently Senior Vice-President and Chief Scientist. “Cochlear implants truly change people’s lives,” said Associate Professor Patrick. “They bring people with hearing loss into a world of sound that the rest of us take for granted.” For further information contact: Cochlear AG, EMEA Headquarters, Tel: +41 61 205 04 04, Email: info@cochlear.com Web: www.cochlear.com

news update The next generation of Siemens’ BestSound Technology™: binax™ is launched in the UK
Professor Graeme Clark wins 2015 Russ Prize
In January, Siemens Hearing Instruments UK (SHI UK) launched the next generation of BestSound Technology: binax. Five days of launch road shows over two weeks began in Bristol before heading to Chichester, Milton Keynes, Leeds and finally Edinburgh. Dispensers were introduced to Siemens’ new, award-winning binaural technology that delivers a true binaural experience; with a world’s first in hearing technology – better than normal hearing in noise. Mark Laben, UK Product & Marketing Manager, said: “We were really proud and excited to launch our new binax products. Our customers will now be able to offer hearing instruments that are so sophisticated that wearers can understand speech in demanding environments even better than people with normal hearing as clinically proven by two independent university studies.” Introduced along with the binax technology are two Apps for additional wearer convenience. Wearers are able to remotely control any binax hearing instrument regardless of size, and without having to carry around an extra remote control. Thanks to the easyTek app and touchControl app, wearers can control all binax hearing instruments with a simple tap of their smartphone, whether it is on an android or iOS system. Adding additional technology adds more processing for the hearing instrument but with minimal additional power consumption! news update Outstanding quality coupled with fairness: smart optics presents 3D-Scanner duo scan and ds-Production
At this year’s AAA in Texas smart optics from Germany will present their scanners ds-Production and duo scan to hearing care professionals. Both scanners impress with their speed to generate accurate 3D-data of ear impressions, but also impress with their fairness, because follow-up costs or licence fees are completely eliminated, while maintaining ‘made in Germany’ quality. The new FTP module provides a simplified data exchange. Users can now upload their created data to a server in order to use the scans for further processing or visual purposes. Whether the prospective user is a beginner or a professional, the simple multilingual user interface simplifies the handling so that training can be omitted. The smart optics sales team Britta Welz and Matthias Koch (booth # 574) will be available to answer questions and give visitors an insight into the new developments. KARL STORZ IMAGE 1 SPIES™ named Innovation of the Year by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS), the largest society of minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgeons in North America and possibly the world, has named KARL STORZ IMAGE 1 SPIES™ as an Innovation of the Year for 2014. KARL STORZ provides innovative imaging solutions to enhance surgeons’ capabilities so they can deliver exceptional levels of patient care. The new IMAGE 1 SPIES™ system is the company’s latest solution to optimise the surgeon’s view of challenging anatomical areas during complex surgeries. In these days of ‘me too’ products, this award clearly demonstrates that KARL STORZ is still very much an innovator, leading the field in imaging technology, says the company. Combined with new FULL HD three-chip camera heads, IMAGE 1 SPIES™ includes the CLARA, CHROMA and SPECTRA modes, which activate proprietary image enhancement algorithms to provide optimum image quality. SPIES CLARA™ ensures optimal illumination of the endoscopic image in all areas. Dark areas are brightened dynamically, with each pixel being compared to the luminance information from its surrounding environment and, where appropriate, brightened. In this way, dark areas and deeper structures can be optimally visualised. SPIES CHROMA® enhances the colour contrast, without altering the surgeon’s natural colour perception. Each pixel’s environment is analysed with regard to the spatial colour changes and is emphasised accordingly. Colour changes and structures are thus represented more clearly, with the borders between different tissue types becoming easier to define. SPIES CLARA™ and SPIES CHROMA® can be utilised together to optimise image quality. This year, KARL STORZ IMAGE 1 SPIES™ will evolve with additional camera heads, 3D FULL HD technology, more developments in spectral imaging and completely new technologies, all based on its modular design, which provides a sustainable and future-proof platform. news update Autifony Therapeutics clinical study on new tinnitus treatment now recruiting Autifony Therapeutics is developing its lead compound AUT00063 for the treatment of tinnitus and age-related hearing loss. The company recently initiated a Phase IIa ‘proof of concept’ clinical trial in tinnitus subjects called the QUIET-1 study (QUest In Eliminating Tinnitus). This will be conducted in around 12 key hospital sites across the UK. Professor Jaydip Ray, ENT Surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, is national Coordinating Investigator, with Professor Deborah Hall at The University of Nottingham and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit (BRU) as lead academic collaborator. The study is co-funded by a substantial award from the UK government-backed Biomedical Catalyst, and will be recruiting participants until mid 2015. In a completed Phase I study to explore safety and pharmacokinetics, AUT00063 showed an excellent safety and tolerability profile, and the results confirmed once daily oral dosing. The QUIET-1 study will focus in particular on tinnitus associated with hearing loss following noise exposure or ageing, in people who have suffered from tinnitus for between six and 18 months. Subjects will undergo four weeks of once daily dosing. If the initial trial for tinnitus is successful, then further clinical trials will be carried out with people suffering from different kinds of tinnitus, so people at present not deemed eligible to participate in the QUIET-1 study, such as those with longer term tinnitus, may be able to join a later study. AUT00063 will also soon be tested for the treatment of age-related hearing loss in a clinical trial in the US. For specific queries about participating in the tinnitus clinical trial, contact the hospital site nearest to you, or the Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit (BRU) by calling the study team on 0115 823 2600 or by email: nhbru-enquiries@nottingham.ac.uk For further information contact: Autifony Therapeutics, Web: www.autifony.com
Tinnitus Clinic has new clinical offering in its sights Since its launch three years ago, The Tinnitus Clinic has become the UK’s largest private provider of tinnitus treatments and therapy, according to Josephine, as well as attracting patients from all over the world and contributing to the development of a wider range of tinnitus treatments. Josephine, who set up the business from scratch, became sole owner in December. “The care of patients has always been my primary personal concern,” said Josephine. “Ten percent of adults live with tinnitus symptoms, which are very distressing and can make every day a challenge. It was always my aim to extend our network through franchise and partnerships, working with the very best ENT and audiology providers. “Now The Tinnitus Clinic Ltd has the freedom to do that, by operating as an independent expert treatment provider for people with tinnitus. “The Tinnitus Clinic Ltd will continue to operate from our current consulting rooms, 121 Harley Street, London, in addition to our clinics in Cheltenham, Edinburgh and Manchester and our first franchise clinic in Leicester. We aim to establish a further eight franchises in the UK over the next 24 months, and to look further afield at other markets where people are asking for the services of The Tinnitus Clinic.” Mark Williams, Chief Audiologist at The Tinnitus Clinic, said: “I am excited by the opportunity that this independence will bring. We will be expanding the evidence-based therapy options that we provide while constantly assessing the quality of our clinical practice.” For further information contact: The Tinnitus Clinic, Josephine Swinhoe, Managing Director, Tel: +44 (0)203 326 1777
Radiofrequency in larynx surgery: a safe, cost-effective and easy to use alternative Radiofrequency in larynx surgery is a safe, costeffective and easy to use alternative to the CO2 laser. Clinical results are reported as comparable or even superior, at reduced cost and with shorter procedure and recovery time. The dedicated ARROWtip™ micro-dissection needles give surgeons tactile feedback of the target tissue. It is possible to feel soft tissue and cartilage. The comprehensive range of different angles allow for easy access to any surgical site in the larynx. Minimally invasive surgical approaches are enhanced, as it is now possible to “cut even around corners”. Surgeons are able to use full microscope light throughout the procedure as dimming is not necessary. Special safety precautions, such as armoured laser-tubing and covering of structures outside of the surgical field are not required. Preparation and set-up for the cases are faster and significantly less expensive. To find out more, please refer to page 18 in this magazine, visit our website or contact your Sutter representative. news update BSHAA gets new chief executive Professor David Welbourn has been appointed Chief Executive Officer for the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists. He will replace Alan Torbet who retires at the beginning of May. David is a visiting professor at Cass Business School, at London University and is founder and Managing Director of Eutropia Ltd, a change management consultancy. The Society is the professional body for independent hearing care providers who test hearing and prescribe hearing aids in the high street. Professor Welbourn is a specialist in governance, leadership and information, he has previously worked in the health sector for 12 years including the role of Executive Director of Performance and Chief Information Officer for a strategic health authority. He was also commissioned by NHS England to produce a good practice guide and by the Department of Health to develop evidence based guidance on best practice leadership of innovation. In a message to members, David says he’s delighted about the appointment: “My portfolio of interests focuses firmly on the link between excellence in leadership and governance. Against the increasingly difficult challenges of providing high quality healthcare these are the essential ingredients on which future success will be built. Nowhere is this more important than in raising the profile of professionals, and strengthening the part they play in both leadership and effective governance. “In recent times we have seen the pendulum of regulation swing to an extreme focus on process compliance. Some of the critical value of professionalism has been eroded as a result. This is happening right across the regulated industries with sometimes disastrous consequences to both service quality and public confidence. I look forward to the opportunity to work with the council and the wider membership to continue to make the case for a strong and respected profession.” For further information contact: BSHAA, Email: president@bshaa.com or marketing@bshaa.com
