Reusable electrodes for tonsillotomy now available from Sutter
Tonsil resections are among the most common procedures in ENT surgery. Due to a lower risk of postoperative complications, many surgeons choose tonsillotomy, or partial tonsillectomy, to treat patients with tonsillar hyperplasia. Radiofrequency is a cost-effective, easy-to-use and time-saving alternative to a laser for this kind of treatment. Sutter offers a wide range of reusable monopolar micro-dissection electrodes, two of which were especially designed for tonsillotomy

Otopront introduces the new and pacesetting full-HD video endoscopy system PES Pilot HDpro The Pilot presents a high-end touchscreen video endoscopy system, designed to be elegantly integrated into the users working area, assuring efficient work. The main focus of development was to combine the latest camera technology with an intuitive and attractive yet complete software interface. Features like an easy to use patient database application, picture zoom function, ability to mark findings with the touch of a finger and the capability to grab pictures from recorded videos being just a few examples of its functionality. Regarding the design, the front-mounted 9 or 15 inch touchscreen guarantees that all functions can be conveniently operated without the need to move. At the same time, the compact size and simple set-up allows for mobile use. The system is extendable, with two further screens (examination and patient screen) and
143
two cameras (e.g. camera for microscopy). By placing a screen for the doctor at an angle behind the patient’s chair removes the need to turn the head during the examination. Detailed results can be shown to the patient via a second screen that can be turned on and off at the Pilot touchscreen. An automatic switch between endoscope and microscope
camera further elevates the efficiency. The latest 2015 C-MOS camera chip offers a full-HD resolution and maximum depth of illumination and so delivers an extremely sharp image of the highest contrast. Stroboscopic examinations can be fully optimised by the camera’s global shutter technology. Videos and images can be saved on the device’s internal storage or alternatively transferred to an external network. Numerous IT and connection ports and an optional handling via mouse and keyboard complete the Pilot’s technical strengths.

Turtle Beach launches HyperSound Clear™ audio solution Turtle Beach Corporation, a leadingedge audio technology company, has announced the introduction of its UK based EMEA & APAC organisation and preparations to launch their first hearing healthcare product, HyperSound Clear™ later this year. A first-of-its-kind directed audio solution for people with hearing loss, HyperSound Clear delivers rich, 3D sound to the targeted listener to improve sound clarity and speech intelligibility for a crisp, clear home entertainment listening experience. HyperSound® technology is a fundamentally new approach to sound delivery that utilises thin panels to generate an ultrasound beam that carries audio through the air. The panels direct sound in a narrow, controlled beam; much the way a flashlight directs a beam of light. When an individual enters the beam, they hear immersive 3D audio, similar to wearing a surround sound headset. Additionally, HyperSound Clear can be programmed to
an individual’s specific hearing profile by utilising NAL-R. The company also announced that Chris Auty assumes the role of Managing Director, EMEA and APAC, and will be responsible for HyperSound Clear’s rollout into emerging markets across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. Cochlear™ Nucleus® Aqua+ the world’s first waterproof behind the ear solution for cochlear implants users The Cochlear™ Nucleus® Aqua+ is a formfitting, easy-to-use accessory that allows Cochlear Nucleus 5 and Nucleus 6 Sound Processor users to hear while taking a bath, swimming or snorkelling. Aqua+ is a flexible, watertight sleeve that simply fits over their sound processor behind the ear. A special waterproof coil then connects to the sound processor within the sleeve. This is the most discreet, comfortable
solution on the market, the company explains, as there is no need for cumbersome bulky extra parts or wiring. Nucleus 5 and Nucleus 6 Sound Processors already have a high water resistance rating of IP571; with Aqua+, the rating achieved is increased to IP682. Aqua+ is safe to use in all types of water including in chlorinated swimming pools, fresh water lakes and rivers, oceans and soapy water. Additionally, the Aqua+ is a reusable solution that allows the form-fitting sleeve to be used numerous times without having to replace it. 1 Only when used with a rechargeable battery. 2 Rechargeable battery required. Bone conduction hearing systems by BHM
BHM’s core competence is the development and production of bone conduction systems. Contrary to air conduction devices, the bone conduction systems transmit the energy in the form of tactile vibrations to the mastoid via the bone receiver and conductor plate. From there the signal travels as structure-borne sound via the skull bone to the cochlea. Compared to AC hearing instruments, BC systems have a number of advantages: no ear mould, tubing or sealing problem, no irritation of the ear canal – the ear canal remains free. Bone conduction-hearing systems are an ideal solution without any risk of surgery.
151
Fitting strategy When the air-bone gap is between 25- and 30dB HL, bone-conduction is already appropriate. BC systems are the appropriate fitting for microtia / atresia auris, severe stenosis of the ear canal, chronic middle ear drainage, allergic reaction to earmold materials, middle ear and mixed hearing loss or after surgery of the middle ear. AN-Evo1 & contact star evo1 Due to the new technology of these spectacles the discomforting feeling of pressure could be eliminated, leading to a better life quality. Both spectacles can be combined with new fashionable and individual frames.
contact mini In order to give children, as well as adults, unilateral or bilateral hearing assistance at the right time, BHM has developed the contact mini. This discreet high-tech hearing system is particularly recommended in cases of aural atresia as well as anomalies in the auditory canal (microtia, anotia). The device is a preferred alternative treatment before surgery, or in cases when surgery is not the best solution. contact mini can be invisibly incorporated into a wide range of headpieces. Golfing for hearing dogs Vicki Skeels and The Hearing Care Centre of Colchester have raised £900 for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People at its annual Charity Golf Day held 1 July. Representatives from Hearing Dogs also gave a presentation, introducing one of its highly trained working dogs, ‘Pebbles’. “We are bowled over with the continuing generosity of our players and sponsors,” said Vicki. “In our daily work with hearing impaired people, we find that there is sometimes a limit to what hearing aids
can do for the profoundly deaf – and this is where a hearing dog can prove so valuable. We take great delight in supporting such a worthy cause.” Industry sponsors and participants included Phonak, Resound, Unitron, Puretone, Oticon, Widex and Starkey. Tinnitus Clinic leads with new integrative therapy Tinnitus Clinic patients are now supported with their emotional challenges thanks to a new integrative model of therapy. Tinnitus patients often experience anxiety, depression and isolationism, alongside psychoacoustic issues like hyperacusis which can depreciate quality of life. Tinnitus symptoms react to emotional stress (Baigi et al. 2011), a factor considered when the clinic developed the integrative pathway, which integrates CBT-like therapeutic support and psychodynamic models which improve the patients’ quality of life. Julianne Mullen, resident therapist at The
Tinnitus Clinic, said: “The majority of clients suffering from severe tinnitus feel isolated after experiencing a range of negative emotions. Patients benefit from sharing these struggles in a contained therapeutic environment with a suitably qualified professional.” An observational study is being run to document the therapeutic model’s efficacy.
