Student of the Year award announced at AOP Awards

Image caption: Host Fergus Walsh presents the award to Shaimil Shah (centre), with Keeler’s Laura Haverley.

Keeler sponsored the Association of Optometrists ‘Student of the Year’ award at this year’s AOP Awards in November. Winners were revealed at a special black tie gala dinner and Shaimil Shah was announced as Student of the Year. A Cardiff University optometry undergraduate, Shaimil has been inspirational in establishing an optometry community among his fellow undergraduate peers. He achieved this by refreshing the optometry school’s buddy system and establishing the Boots Varsity Cup, a day of sports and socialising with the pharmacy school at the University. Laura Haverley, Marketing Manager at Keeler, commented: “Keeler would like to congratulate Shaimil on his well-deserved Student of the Year award. We are delighted to sponsor this award at the AOP event. It is important to recognise the good work of up and coming optometrists, they are the future of the industry and it’s exciting to see such bright talent around.” For further information contact: Laura Haverley at Keeler Ltd T: +44 (0)1753 827 160 E: sales@keeler.co.uk www.keeler.co.uk

Compass: The first fundus perimeter with true colour confocal imaging

The Compass is the first fundus perimeter on the market which combines visual field measurements with confocal colour imaging of the fundus. Fully-automated, the Compass is capable of performing 24-2 visual field testing. Boasting 25Hz retinal tracker technology, it allows for retinal movement and automatically adjusts stimuli projection to the patient’s current eye position. This ensures control of fixation losses, for highly-accurate test / re-test repeatability. The Compass provides high-quality colour, red-free and infrared confocal imaging, offering high-fidelity to real retinal appearance. The system produces information derived from visual fields testing, combined with structural information from the fundus images. This enables improved testing accuracy and diagnostic capabilities in the analysis and management of glaucoma. The Synoptophore: The all-in-one instrument for binocular vision

Keeler hosts students from Aston University

The Clement Clarke Ophthalmic (CCO) Synoptophore is the ideal tool for the assessment and treatment of ocular motility disorders. It reliably performs the most comprehensive binocular vision assessment available today, accurately measuring objective and subjective horizontal, vertical and torsional deviations in nine positions of gaze. The Synoptophore is the instrument of choice for any busy orthoptic clinic. Easyto-use, it provides precise measurements in a single, effortless examination, including; angle alpha, the objective and subjective angle of deviation, abnormal retinal correspondence and density of suppression. It assesses all three grades of binocular single vision (BSV); simultaneous perception, sensory and motor fusion and stereopsis. An extensive range of complementary hand-crafted slides are available, which are easily understood and recognised by patients.

Keeler recently hosted 40 optometry students from Aston University at its headquarters in Windsor. Keeler is the only ophthalmic instrument manufacturer in the UK which provided students with the opportunity to tour the factory and learn how ophthalmoscopes were made; students also had the chance to learn how to make their own. In-depth knowledge of the making and operation of these products helps equip students with the practical side of diagnostic care, allowing them to implement eye care with confidence. Attending students covered the first, second and third years of the Bachelors Optometry programme at Aston, a course reported as first in the UK in the Sunday Times University Guide 2015 and the Complete University Guide 2016. Laura Haverley, who hosted the students at Keeler, commented: “It was a privilege to meet with the future of optometry and host them here. We had a great day and I hope the students left with valuable knowledge that will help them with their course and future career.”

Record numbers attend 13th International and selecting SPECTRALIS Symposium ‘conference videos’. More than 400 participants from 49 countries attended the 13th International SPECTRALIS Symposium in Valencia, Spain, on 16-17 October 2015. “This success was partly due to the attractive venue” explained Dr Stephan Schultz, Head of the Heidelberg Engineering Academy, “but above all, it can be attributed to the high-level international faculty, the interesting scientific program, and the constructive discussions.” The program and the poster sessions were devoted to clinical applications and research work carried out with diagnostic imaging tools for retina and glaucoma. Several lectures covered MultiColor and autofluorescence imaging, and innovations such as the Widefield Imaging Module or the Glaucoma Module Premium Edition were also presented. The clinical application of OCT Angiography* was one of the newest topics under discussion. View the ISS video recordings by going to www.HE-Academy.com

New Oasis Collagen Corneal Shields - free sample

2WIN mobile refractor and vision analyser

Kestrel Ophthalmics is pleased to announce the launch of the dissolvable Oasis Collagen Corneal Shields. The thin, purified collagen shield (diameter 14.5mm) is designed to act like a bandage contact lens, offering ocular protection, comfort and lubrication following surgery, traumatic or non-traumatic corneal conditions. The shields come dehydrated and need to be soaked in fluid (e.g. saline, antibiotic or steroid) to rehydrate them prior to application. Oasis Collagen Shields come in boxes of 10 shields, offering four different dissolution times, a few hours, 12 hours, 24 hours and 72 hours. Once placed on the eye they gradually dissolve over the chosen time period in a uniform manner.

The 2WIN is binocular refractometer that measures both eyes at the same time, in real life vision conditions. The 2WIN measures: • Refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) • Pupil parameters (pupil size and distance) • Sight anomalies that may be related to anisometropia, anisocoria, strabismus and phoria. The 2WIN takes the refractive measurement of the patient from approximately 1 metre away. This eliminates the need to seat the patient at a desktop refractor. Simply ask the patient to fixate at the centre of the device, point and shoot, just like a camera. The 2WINs red / green system tells you when you are within the correct distance range, helping you to get the perfect reading. A scale of 1-9 tells you how reliable your readings are.

Obituary - Michael Crewe It comes with deepest regret that we have to announce that Michael Crewe sadly lost his battle with cancer in early December. Michael (Bill) will be sadly missed by those who both knew and worked with him and our thoughts are with his family at this time. A well known and respected individual, Michael’s personality was infectous and through the strong relationships he built both personally and professionally, Michael’s passing will be a loss to both Zeiss and the broader ophthalmic community.

During his 25 years at Zeiss, Michael became a key player of our team, who showed unerring loyalty to his work and to his customers, always going the extra mile to satisfy and support those that relied on him. His commitment, drive, loyalty and professionalism will remain in our memories and his time at Zeiss will be recalled fondly by all. Michael will be sorely missed, may he rest in peace.
