Eidon: the first true colour scanning ophthalmoscope on the market The Eidon is the world’s first true colour, widefield confocal scanner. This 2-in-1 device can be used for both diagnosis and screening. It offers true colour, infrared and red-free imaging, as standard. Boasting a 60° single field to 110° field retinal image, the Eidon utilises infrared light which can be used to detect early stages of AMD. Thanks to its confocal technology, the Eidon provides high-resolution and contrast capabilities to image the fundus through cataracts and media opacities, with no optic disc bleaching. The Eidon offers fully-automated
assessment (with manual override) and boasts easy-to-use tablet and toggle controls, all in a compact footprint. For further information on the Eidon please visit www.haagstreituk.com/eidon For further information contact: Haag-Streit UK Tel: +44 (0)1279 883829 Email: eidon haag-streit-uk.com Web: www.haagstreituk.com/eidon
Carleton Optical secure a substantial digital fundus camera order with the NHS Supply Chain
EM-3000 Specular microscope
After on-site evaluations Carleton Optical has recently secured a substantial order through the NHS Supply Chain for quantities of the Canon CR-2 non mydriatic camera. Since December 2006, two field digital retinal photography has been the only acceptable method of systematic screening for diabetic retinopathy in the NHS and it is estimated that this screening could save more than 400 people from sight loss per year in England alone. Carleton and Canon are delighted to have secured this business working in conjunction with the NHS Supply Chain. The CR-2 nonmydriatic camera marks the latest development in Canon’s unparalleled success story. In 1976, Canon developed and manufactured the world’s first non-mydriatic retinal camera – an innovation that set the standard for its time. From product generation to generation, Canon has continued to develop its cameras with the latest cutting edge technology. Canon has produced a new generation of fundus cameras by creating the CR-2. Its revolutionary compact and ergonomic design has yielded a small and light instrument that is exceptionally intuitive, safe and comfortable
With the Tomey EM-3000 Specular microscope, auto alignment and automatic analysis of the endothelium layer can be performed quickly and easily. Due to the low intensity light source needed for examination, the EM3000 ensures maximum patient comfort. Featuring: • Auto alignment/shot where the best of 15 images is automatically selected for display • Integrated non-contact pachymetry • Counts up to 300 cells • Seven measurement areas • Wide photographic range • Fast and automatic analysis • 8.4 inch colour touch screen • Morphology and density diagrams • LED light source • Various display functions for a visual understanding of the condition of the endothelium • USB connector for a printer or LAN connector for PC.
for the user and the patient. The illuminated control panel ensures hassle-free operation in darkened rooms and, weighing only 15kg, the CR-2 is the flexible solution designed to meet all mobile needs. Clanotech receives orphan drug designation in the EU Clanotech AB announced that its anti-fibrotic and antiangiogenic candidate drug CLT-28643 received orphan drug designation by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for prevention of scarring post glaucoma filtration surgery. Karolinska Development has an 80% ownership in Clanotech. Clanotech’s lead substance, an α5β1-integrin antagonist, has anti-angiogenic, anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory properties that are expected to benefit the wound healing processes following glaucoma surgery. The orphan drug designation will significantly shorten a future market approval process and reinforce market exclusivity for a launched product. “We’re delighted by the positive response from the EMA, which underpins the great need for products that can improve the outcome of glaucoma surgery,” said Patrizia Caldirola, CEO, Clanotech. “Therapies with potential for use in specialised care and orphan diseases are at the core of Karolinska Development’s investment strategy. The medical need for a safe and specific anti-fibrotic therapy in glaucoma surgery is substantial and the orphan drug designation will add significant value to this exciting pharmaceutical project,” said Bruno Lucidi, CEO, Karolinska Development. Santen announces positive outcome of the European Decentralised Procedure for approval of Taptiqom®
The world’s first injectable IOL for patients with macular pathologies was introduced by Oculentis in late 2013. It will now enter into a phase of controlled trials limited to three centres in Germany under the leadership of Professor Auffarth at the University of Heidelberg. The goal of these trials is to determine the inclusion criteria and the residual dependence on low vision aids for these patient groups. The early feasibility studies done by the University of Heidelberg show great potential for improving the quality of life for patients with AMD.
Santen announced the positive outcome of the Decentralised Procedure (DCP) for Taptiqom® in Europe. The announcement follows the issuance of the Final Assessment Report from the Reference Member State (RMS), the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices of Germany (BfArM), and the agreement of all the Concerned Member States (CMS) in DCP that Taptiqom® is approvable. The regulatory process will now enter the national phase of the DCP in which the RMS Germany and each of the CMS grants its national license. Taptiqom® is a preservative-free eye drop solution (in single dose containers) of a fixed dose combination of the prostaglandin tafluprost (15 micrograms/ml) and the beta blocker timolol (5 mg/ml). These two components lower intraocular pressure (IOP) by complementary mechanisms of action and the combined effect results in additional IOP reduction compared to either compound alone. Taptiqom® was codeveloped by Santen and Asahi Glass Co Ltd.
