Heidelberg Engineering launches new software upgrade Faster image acquisition and more intuitive analysis are key features of the new Heidelberg Engineering SPECTRALIS 6.00 OCT software. The free download reinforces the benefits of this technology being an upgradeable platform, believes the company. The upgrade allows SPECTRALIS users to interrogate and gain more information from both new and previously taken scans, providing full segmentation of the retinal layers and longitudinal section analysis for a top down view. Christopher Mody, Heidelberg Engineering Clinical Programme Manager, explained – “For those with a retinal interest the new software includes transverse section analysis and multi-layer segmentation. This multi-layer segmentation includes 10 different thickness maps. We believe this is the only commercially available means of segmenting GCL and IPL. This really demonstrates the benefit of investing in an upgradeable OCT platform.” Transverse section analysis provides the clinician with a birds-eye
view of the retinal layers. Both new and previously taken scans of the retina are segmented into individual retinal layers, which can then be viewed. This allows for visualisation of the extent of pathology across the retina, which when combined with OCT sections through the retina, provides a comprehensive analysis of the health of the eye. The transverse section analysis allows: • Extent of the pathologies view • Access to information on the integrity of specific layers • Highlighting of specific patterns • Visualisation of outer retinal tabulation • Outer retinal tabulation seen in later stages of wet AMD. The upgrade comes with a comprehensive tutorial, highlighting access to information on the integrity of specific layers. Heidelberg Engineering announces OCT Angiography: next generation vascular imaging Presentation at International Congress on ‘En face’ OCT imaging – Advances in OCT (12-13 December, Rome, Italy) Heidelberg Engineering demonstrated the next stage – yet to be released to market – of OCT Angiography for the SPECTRALIS diagnostic imaging platform. “SPECTRALIS OCT Angiography provides three dimensional reconstruction of the perfused microvasculature within the retina and choroid. In contrast to traditional fluorescein and ICG angiography the retinal and choroidal blood flow can be detected without the need to inject any dye. This facilitates analysis of layer-by-layer using the en-face visualisation. Although the clinical evaluation of OCT angiography is ongoing, the clinical potential of this new technology is tremendous,” explains respected authority on OCT, Prof Gabriel Coscas. The SPECTRALIS OCT Angiography performs sequential OCT cross-sectional scans to detect motion of scattering particles such as erythrocytes within the eye’s vasculature. Key for this technology are high-resolution OCT scans, and the ability to repeatedly measure the same location at the retina.
“The SPECTRALIS system combines a 70 kHz A-scan rate with Heidelberg Engineering’s proprietary TruTrack high-speed active eye tracking, to provide unmatched high-resolution OCT images. With the transverse section analysis the system is able to virtually dissect finest structures of the vasculature non-invasively,” says Dr Jan Dechent, Heidelberg Engineering Product Manager. The OCT Angiography feature will be based on the recently announced OCT2 module for the SPECTRALIS diagnostic imaging platform. All expandable SPECTRALIS systems, those purchased with the Advanced Upgrade Package or with the MultiColor module, can be upgraded to the OCT2 module and OCT Angiography. Depth selective OCT Angiography provides structural detail of the retinal vasculature without dye injection. Topcon is to unveil NEW generation of OCT technology Once again TOPCON brings the first of a new generation of OCT machines to the market, the NEW Swept Source DRI OCT Triton series*1 with 1,050nm wavelength and the world’s fastest*2 scanning speed of 100,000 A-Scans/ second. In addition to anterior segment scanning*3, the DRI OCT Triton can visualise deeper pathology, rapidly penetrating ocular tissues such as the choroid and even the sclera, without the light source being obscured by media opacities or haemorrhage. The DRI OCT Triton can visualise the entire tomogram from vitreous through to sclera at the press of a single button with high sensitivity and speed, without sacrificing the view of one structure over another. The instantaneous capture of 256 B-scans within the data cube, reduces interpolation between slices and allows the most revealing imagery of individual layers available. With greater signal penetration through the RPE the Triton is capable of full choroidal thickness mapping and coronal imagery. Powerful analysis tools are supported by a robust normative database. Wide field scanning (12 x 9mm) caters for both macular and glaucoma specialists, allowing fully automated mapping and illustration of both the macula and optic disc in one single scan and potentially halving
the number of scans the patient requires. The patient experience is further enhanced by the short capture time and the invisible 1,050nm light source, greatly reducing the impact of eye movements and improving scan success rates with less cooperative patients. Combining Swept Source OCT with a True Colour Fundus camera and being able to produce multimodal imagery in the form of FA, FAF and digital red free in one unit*1, the DRI OCT Triton can display high resolution fundus images with clear retinal vessel and macular mapping to allow pinpoint registration of the deepest pathology, further improving examination efficiency and supporting confident diagnosis. *1 DRI OCT Triton Series DRI OCT Triton – Swept Source OCT + Colour, Digital Red free DRI OCT Triton Plus – Swept Source OCT + Colour, Digital Red free + Fluorescein Angiography + Auto Fluorescein. *2 Investigated by TOPCON as of Oct 2014. *3 Anterior scanning function is optional.
