Thomson Software Solutions, Clinical Eye Tracker system shortlisted for the AOP Product of the Year The Clinical Eye Tracker system provides accurate measurements of the position of the two eyes, providing clinicians with a powerful new tool for diagnosing and managing eye movement and binocular vision anomalies, various neurological conditions and reading difficulties. The system is completely non-invasive, requires minimal setup / calibration and is very intuitive to use. Furthermore, by harnessing new image acquisition and analysis technology, the system is available at a breakthrough of £1245. The Clinical Eye Tracker uses a small detector bar which is attached to the lower bezel of a standard computer monitor. The detector bar illuminates the eyes with IR light and captures a ‘red eye’ image of each eye. By using advanced image analysis and triangulation, the system automatically calculates the gaze position of each eye to less than one degree, at a rate of 60 measurements per second. The software then calculates the exact position of each eye relative to the test stimulus and displays a recording of the precise fixation scan path throughout the recording allowing any anomalies of eye movements or binocular co-ordination to be
readily identified and quantified. The software is capable of generating a wide range of test stimuli for assessing different types of eye movements including saccades, pursuit movements, nystagmus and optokinetic nystagmus. A powerful module for assessing and analysing eye movements while reading is provided and an IR transparent cover system has been developed to assess eye movements during a cover test and modules for performing an objective Hess test and preferential looking in infants, are under development. Thomson Software Solutions also supplies a range of other software and hardware including the award-winning range of computerised vision Test Charts, a computerised Hess Screen, central visual field assessment software and animations for chair-side and waiting room patient education. Birmingham Sight Loss Council receives bespoke parliament tour On Friday 9 December, the Birmingham Sight Loss Council visited the Houses of Parliament for a tactile tour of Parliament. The fully guided tour of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords is designed specifically for those with sight loss. It grants those taking part unique, fun and interactive access to Parliament, including exploring models of the historic parliamentary estate before being taken on a tour of both chambers. The group from Birmingham Sight Loss Council were allowed to touch the interior design, and statues, and were able to sit in the Speaker’s Chair. Parliamentary tours do not usually incorporate these features but the tactile tour enables those who are blind or partially sighted to fully immerse themselves in the fascinating parliamentary experience. The day was enjoyed by all, and Mohammed Rashid from the Birmingham Sight Loss Council said: “I found the Tactile Tour of the Houses of Parliament very informative. We were encouraged
to interact with and feel every part of the tour, from the ornate wooden carvings to the Speaker’s chair and even some of the crown jewels that are worn as part of the formal uniform of the doorkeepers. This tour gave us a greater understanding of what happens in Parliament which will support our preparation for the work we are doing in the Birmingham Sight Loss Council.” The Birmingham Sight Loss Council helps to represent the 30,000 blind and partially sighted people living in Birmingham. Visually impaired people are recruited to act as mediators and sometimes as lobbyists to help bring about change for those living with sight loss. It is backed and funded by The Thomas Pocklington trust, which is a national not-for-profit organisation that supports people who are visually impaired. Arew Billingham, Network Engagement Manager for the Thomas Pocklington Trust, said: “The tactile tour of Parliament was a fantastic opportunity for the Birmingham Sight Loss Council to immerse themselves in the heart of
UK politics. It was an insightful and enjoyable day for everyone and we hope to be able to interact with Parliament more as a part of the Sight Loss Council’s work.” For further information contact: David Hall T: +44 (0)2034630823 E: david.hall@plmr.co.uk http://www.pocklington-trust.org.uk

NEWS AND PRODUCT UPDATE
Spectrum adds Diopsys ERG to its dynamic product portfolio Spectrum is pleased to announce a further addition to its ever expanding Diagnostic product range. In keeping with its history of bringing innovation to market, Spectrum has recently added the Diopsys range of non-invasive Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) and Electroretinography (ERG) testing to their Product portfolio. Diopsys® ERG vision tests use pattern electroretinography (pERG) technology to help gain objective, functional information about the performance of the inner retinal cells of the eye, especially in the macula. These tests provide indicative data which helps detect dysfunction that can precede evident structural defects, thereby contributing to earlier detection for more specific and timely management of diseases that impair macula and ganglion cells [1]. Diopsys® VEP tests use VEP to objectively measure the functional responses of the entire
visual pathway from the anterior segment of the eye to the visual cortex. Patients from six months old can be tested for vision and optic nerve disorders and also patients with neuro-visual problems caused by traumatic brain injury or stroke. •
• • •
Both objective and functional test results, no verbal response or ‘button pushing’ required. Colour-coded reports for rapid, intuitive report interpretation. Enhanced treatment tracking and patient management with quantitative data. All Diopsys VEP and ERG tests conform to the standards of the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV).
Merthyr Tydfil optician helping the less fortunate in Uganda with Keeler equipment Ophthalmoscope and retinoscope set used at clinic to screen over 700 people. Eye testing equipment donated by Keeler was recently used by Ruth Easton, an Optician from Specsavers in Merthyr Tydfil, on a charitable mission to Uganda. Ruth spent two weeks at the House of Joy charity’s school in the Kasala region running an eye clinic, where she and two friends set up a temporary eye clinic. While there they treated more than 700 people using the Keeler ophthalmoscope and retinoscope set. Almost 300 pairs of frames – all donated from her local south Wales community – were also given away. “I was inspired to arrange the trip to Uganda after I met the people who run House of Joy; I knew that I really wanted to do something to support them and their fantastic work,” explained Ruth. “As an optician I’m very aware of the importance of having a regular sight tests from a young age and understand that, sadly, not every child has access to eye care services. “And all this would not have been possible were it not for the kind contributions made by Keeler. So, from myself and from the people of Kalagi, ‘weebale’ (thank you) for your contribution – they have literally transformed the lives of hundreds of people less fortunate than ourselves!” Overwhelmed by the scale of need for eye care services and the positive impact her visit had on the families she met, Ruth is now planning her next trip abroad to help those less fortunate. “We’re always very happy to support this kind of charitable work,” says Laura Haverley, Keeler’s Sales and Marketing Manager. “Eye care and preventing vision loss are critical to overall health and quality of life.” For further information contact: Keeler Ltd T: +44 (0)1753 857177 E: info@keeler.co.uk www.keeler.co.uk
