Ophthalmic image to be displayed at International Exhibition
Tomey UD-8000 ultrasonic B-scanner
The Royal Photographic Society’s annual Exhibition of Images for Science is to include a retinal angiogram, captured on the Heidelberg Engineering SPECTRALIS diagnostic imaging platform. Taken by Ophthalmic Science Practitioner, Richard Hancock, from Liverpool’s Royal Aintree Hospital, the image was one of 2300 submitted for consideration by hundreds of photographers. His shot is one of just 100 selected for the prestigious exhibition by a judging panel of scientists, photographers and imaging experts. “I am incredibly proud to have my work included in the exhibition. The actual area of my image is less than 5mm in diameter and it is rare to see such capillary detail,” he said. The exhibition opens at the British Science Festival in Bradford and will then tour, with the other winning images, to Manchester, Edinburgh and Cheltenham.
With its ergonomic design and intuitive software, Tomey’s UD 8000 digital ultrasonic technology is proving to be a popular choice amongst ophthalmologists. Features like the new high resolution touch screen operation, new generation of annular array probes and data communication via USB or LAN make the UD 8000 easy to use and efficient. One of the most obvious innovations in the UD is the use of up to four probes. The probes have a unique waterproof membrane cap which holds the liquid, therefore eliminating the need for messy water baths. The end of the probe is soft and smooth so the patient has a pain free, comfortable and speedy test. Due to its latest innovation, it is possible to test the patient in an upright position. The intuitive touch screen operation on a 15” TFT colour monitor offers versatile functions such as; automated video recording, zoom, area distance and angle calculation, thumbnail images, dual display and on screen annotation. For the ultimate ultrasound solution, you can connect the AL-4000 bio/ pachymeter and its software to the UD-8000.

Swept-source OCT: patent license agreement between Massachusetts General Hospital and Heidelberg Engineering
Tonosafe: the world-leading method of reducing the risk of cross-infection between patients
Heidelberg Engineering has entered into a patent license agreement with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston. The agreement grants global and exclusive rights to 77 basic patents and patent applications which relate to sweptsource OCT technology and its application in ophthalmology. Spectral domain OCT has become indispensable to eye care professionals worldwide to diagnose and follow-up patients with diseases of the posterior segment of the eye, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma. Swept-source OCT technology has specific characteristics which are ideal to acquire comprehensive information about a wide variety of properties of the anterior part of the eye, especially of patients who have to undergo cataract or refractive surgery. “Later this year we will introduce a new swept-source technology based platform product to examine the anterior segment of the eye,” said Dr Tilman Otto, Head of Research and Development of Heidelberg Engineering. “It integrates sophisticated imaging and measurement functions and will be the basis for a growing number of exciting analytical and imaging features in the future.” Along with the patent license agreement MGH’s Wellman Center for Photomedicine and Heidelberg Engineering have established a long-term relationship on OCT research. Heidelberg Engineering is supporting this research which is led by one of the inventors of the swept-source OCT technology, Brett E Bouma, PhD, Associate Physicist in the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor at Harvard Medical School. The intent of both partners is to transfer future research results into clinically relevant concepts and products.
Tonosafe is a disposable tonometer prism that reduces the risk of crossinfection between patients and eliminates the need to clean and disinfect prisms. With everything supplied in one pack, Tonosafe has been developed for single patient use. The prisms are supplied with prism holders, fully-sterilised, and are disposed of after each patient use. This avoids the need for the timely, and potentially damaging, disinfection and sterilisation associated with non-disposable prisms. Calibrated to Goldmann standards, Tonosafe has been specifically designed for use with Goldmann and Perkinsstyle tonometers. Quick and easy-to-use, it only takes a moment to position the prism, and the optical clarity provides a superb view of the florescent semicircles. MidVitreous lens for vitreolysis Applications Volk Optical’s new Idrees MidVitreous lens provides high resolution views and maximum focusing ability to reduce required laser energy during vitreolysis treatment. Developed in collaboration with Dr Mohammed Idrees of the Saudi German Hospital (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia), the lens was designed specifically for elimination of vitreous strands or opacities in the central mid-vitreous. With a 1.11x image magnification, and .90x laser spot, the Idrees MidVitreous lens provides the highest resolution and focusing ability of any commercially available vitreolysis lens. Less laser energy is required for treatment, improving patient safety. The flanged contact provides stability for laser delivery and prevents patients from squeezing it off the eye. The large ring diameter (36mm) and tall lens body allow for easy manipulation within the orbit, particularly in patients with deep set eyes. The direct contact lens requires the use of viscous coupling fluid during laser treatment. For further information contact: Volk Optical E: terry.cooper@volk.com www.volk.com

New cataract and refractive imaging platform unveiled at ESCRS Heidelberg Engineering will offer a preview of its cataract and refractive imaging platform* during this year’s Congress of the ESCRS in Barcelona. The platform is based on an upgradable, modular design, which allows to configure each product to the specific diagnostic workflow in a practice or clinic. Main options include: IOL biometry, corneal topography/ tomography, anterior segment biometry and anterior segment imaging. The new platform is based on swept-source OCT technology. An important characteristic of the new platform is the fact that all measurements and analysis are based on highresolution diagnostic images. This mitigates the effects of confounding factors such as coexisting abnormalities, which often cannot unambiguously be identified without diagnostic imaging. The new approach increases ophthalmologists’ confidence in the measurements. “You actually see what you measure and measure what you see,” summarises Dr Kester Nahen, Managing Director of Heidelberg Engineering. “We are presenting a single, userfriendly device with biometry, corneal topography and tomography as well as anterior imaging functions which is bound to enhance productivity. Productivity is one of the central challenges in today’s cataract and refractive world, ” adds Dr Nahen. For 25 years Heidelberg Engineering has been a leader in diagnostic imaging solutions for the posterior segment. With the new cataract and refractive imaging platform the company intends to achieve the same with the anterior segment. The cataract and refractive imaging platform fully integrates with the company’s HEYEX PACS*, the next generation Heidelberg Eye Explorer platform which provides centralised management of diagnostic images in ophthalmology. * Under development and not for sale yet. AngioVue: the only commercial OCTAngiography (OCT-A) system
The AngioVue is the only commercially available OCT-Angiography system capable of imaging and displaying function and structure of the ocular microvasculature, through a non-invasive procedure. The innovative system uses a unique dyeless technique to quickly evaluate the functional blood flow of the retina and optic nerve. This method allows the procedure to be performed in everyday clinical practice and unlike fluorescein angiography, can be repeated as often as required, with no risk to the patient. The AngioVue combines fast spectral-domain OCT (70,000 A-scans per second), motion correction technology (MCT) and split spectrum amplitude decorrelation angiography (SSADA) with CUDA parallel processing architecture and en face visualisation of 3D OCT data. These combined result in an innovative and unique solution for visualising ocular blood-flow in the vessels.
