Postoperative patients benefit from Vernacare disposable female urinal
Harrogate District Hospital has made a step change in continence care by introducing Vernacare’s new award-winning VernaFem disposable female urinal. The new single-use product provides an alternative to catheterisation for postoperative patients. It is a safe and hygienic method that can reduce the risk and cost associated with healthcareacquired infections, such as urinary tract infections.
Jennie Foster, Senior Ward Sister, said: "We assessed the benefits of the female urinal in improving patient comfort and dignity, as well as in reducing the need to use catheters and slipper pans. Gynaecological surgical patients are offered the VernaFem within an hour of returning to the ward, which means that some patients are able to toilet themselves without any assistance. This provides more privacy and dignity for patients and also releases nursing time for other elements of care." Bariatric gynaecology chair addresses ‘the new smoking’ Obesity was recently described as ‘the new smoking’ in terms of its impact on health, by the chief executive of NHS England. A report by the Centre for Maternal & Child Enquiries (CMACE), describes obesity as arguably the biggest challenge facing maternity services, with one in five pregnant women in the UK clinically obese. Yet the same report describes the availability of appropriate equipment as “generally inadequate”, stating the majority of equipment failed to meet the minimum safe working load of 250kg recommended by CMACE/RCOG guidelines. Plinth 2000’s regular Model 93 Gynaecology Chair complies with this 250kg SWL requirement - but its latest Model 50G Bariatric Gynae Chair has a higher 320kg SWL, with wider cushions, backrest and supports, designed to accommodate even the super-morbidly obese. This is priced around £2600 (ex-VAT), including a lifetime warranty on the frame mechanism and five-year guarantee on components. 32

Competence in Urodynamics Courses
The Course Attendees and some faculty members
The first three day Competence in Urodynamics Course at the University College London Hospital Education Centre was held on 10-13 December 2015. The attendees were awarded 18 CME points by BAUS. The unanimous appraisal by the urology and gynaecology consultants, nurses and trainees was that the course was most valuable and enjoyable. There was excellent participation among the very relaxed group. On the BAUS evaluation forms the average score on the educational value was 4.72 out of 5. The course is being repeated on 11-13 March and 9-11 September 2015 and
people have already booked their places. The number admitted to these courses is kept low to maximise training impact. Genesis Medical is proud to be selected to run courses for leading clinicians and organisations. In 2015 the company is so far committed to running two further urodynamics courses and three flexible cystoscopy training courses / workshops on 16 January, 2 March and 10 April. The Movember Foundation and Prostate Cancer UK launch largest ever study into the impact of prostate cancer The Movember Foundation in partnership with Prostate Cancer UK, announces the launch of a new research initiative - 'Life after prostate cancer diagnosis'. The project will commit up to £2.2 million to identify what life is really like for the 250,000 men living with and beyond the disease in the UK, and what steps can be taken to improve it.
The award has been granted to Dr Adam Glaser at the University of Leeds, and Dr Anna Gavin at Queen's University Belfast, who will be working with other researchers at Oxford Brookes University, the University of Southampton and Public Health England.
