Danger in the Dolomites (the Parnell Fund) The Parnell Fund raises funds for vital urology research at University College London Hospital (UCLH). The Fund was set up in 2009 by Neville Parnell and Jeremy Ockrim, Consultant Urological Surgeon of UCLH. The charity is committed to advancing the treatment and management of bladder conditions, whilst also raising public awareness of the bladder conditions that affect millions of people in the UK each year. The Parnell fund endeavours to break down the taboos surrounding urological conditions, encouraging people to seek help. Many fundraising events take place each year including an annual Quiz Night and Family Fun Day. The charity also runs an annual fund-raising challenge. The team members have conquered Mount Olympus in 2012 and Mount Etna in 2013. In 2014, the Parnell team took on the challenge to cycle through the Dolomite mountains to Venice over a period of four days to raise funds. Eleven team members managed the challenge,

Gepan®instill - latest updates In an independent review (Madersbacher, 2013) 0.2% chondroitin sulphate as used in Gepan®instill was shown to be the most effective treatment for GAG layer replenishment – a cornerstone in the therapy of Interstitial Cystitis (IC). Madersbacher noted that it has proven to be an effective treatment for Overactive Bladder (OAB), radiation cystitis, and recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). In a clinical trial for OAB (Garuder-Burmester, 2009), Gepan®instill was shown to be more effective than Tolterodine Tartrate. Gepan®instill comes in an easy-to-use prefilled syringe and now has a new innovative tip with a connector which is compatible with multiple numbers of customary catheters, making adapters unnecessary.

This makes it even easier to use, which is especially convenient for patients who are selfinstilling at home. To arrange a meeting to discuss options, or for any other queries, see us at Stand F at UKCS in Aberdeen, or contact us with the details below.

arriving in Venice mostly intact. The challenge was kindly sponsored by Vesica Urology and was a huge success, raising over £2000 for the Urology Unit. This year’s challenge is Monte Carlo or Bust! Cars filled with urologists could prove an even bigger challenge than previous years. Each car has a value of no more than £500, and must be piloted by the ten Parnell teams from University College London Hospital to Casino Royale, Monte Carlo within four days. To keep everyone on thier toes there will be several tasks to perform on route to ensure that no opportunities for embarrassment are missed... Thank you to all those that have supported the charity and continue to do so especially, Adrian English of Vesica Urology.

and significantly improve penile haemodynamics. The technology is a new modality in the treatment of ED patients. LSWT (Linear Shockwave Therapy) utilises a series of acoustic energy pulses. Renova is the only device on the market generating low intensity shockwaves which is specifically designed for ED treatment. Unlike other shockwave systems, Renova focuses the waves onto a linear segment conformal to the treated organ.

A treatment is delivered in several short sessions and is simple, non-invasive and pain-free. To date, no negative side-effects related to Renova treatment have been reported. The device will be on display in Madrid at the European Association of Urology (EAU) Congress, Booth H20, March 20-24, 2015. ProveDye, Class IIa medical device, obtained a CE marking as a visualisation aid for surgical procedures such as the delineation of tissues and operative pieces, seal tests for sutures, detection of leaks and fistula detection. ProveDye can be used for nonspecific colouration during surgical procedures in areas such as urology, gynaecology, gastroenterology or ENT. It allows the visualisation of anatomical structures and anatomical disorders by colouration and helps to detect seals, leaks or fistula and to test sutures patency. ProveDye meets general and specialist surgeons’ needs in the mentioned domains. ProveDye is a solution of Proveblue (European Pharmacopeia compliant methylene blue dye). It will be launched in 2015 on the European market in packs of 5 ampoules of 2ml. For more information, refer to the instructions for use. KARL STORZ IMAGE 1 SPIES™ Named Innovation of the Year by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS), the largest society of minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgeons in North America and possibly the world, has named KARL STORZ IMAGE 1 SPIES™ as an Innovation of the Year for 2014. KARL STORZ provides innovative imaging solutions to enhance surgeons’ capabilities so they can deliver exceptional levels of patient care. The new IMAGE 1 SPIES™ system is the company’s latest solution to optimise the surgeon’s view of challenging anatomical areas during complex surgeries. In these days of “me too” products, this award clearly demonstrates that KARL STORZ is still very much an innovator, leading the field in imaging technology. Combined with new FULL HD three-chip camera heads, IMAGE 1 SPIES™ includes the CLARA, CHROMA and SPECTRA modes, which activate proprietary image enhancement algorithms to provide optimum image quality. SPIES CLARA™ ensures optimal illumination of the endoscopic image in all areas. Dark areas are brightened dynamically, with each pixel being compared to the luminance information from its surrounding environment and, where appropriate, brightened. In this way, dark areas and deeper structures can be optimally visualised. SPIES CHROMA® enhances the colour contrast, without altering the surgeon’s natural colour perception. Each pixel’s environment is analysed with regard to the spatial colour changes and is emphasised accordingly. Colour changes and structures are thus represented more clearly, with the borders between different tissue types becoming easier to define. SPIES CLARA™ and SPIES CHROMA® can be utilised together to optimise image quality. SPIES SPECTRA™ is designed to enhance

certain areas of the colour spectrum with a colour shift. With this information, and using only white light from a standard endoscopic light source, it can support the surgeon in tissue differentiation: the background appears green so blood vessels and capillaries are highlighted, while the surgeon maintains a large amount of natural colour perception. This year, KARL STORZ IMAGE 1 SPIES™ will evolve with additional camera heads, 3D FULL HD technology, more developments in spectral imaging and completely new technologies, all based on its modular design, which provides a sustainable and future-proof platform.

The surgical department at Southampton General Hospital recently updated their ultrasound equipment in laparoscopic and general surgery applications with the purchase of a Hitachi Aloka ProSound Alpha 6. The system together with a high resolution, dedicated intraoperative probe and state of the art laparoscopic probe ensures enhanced ultrasound visualisation during surgery.

Vesica Urology launch a new, discreet Female Mini 12cm catheter

Right from the Start Did you know that most complications associated with intermittent catheterisation start to become apparent after five years1? Wellspect HealthCare, manufacturers of LoFric and experts in ISC, are currently examining the importance of getting catheterisations Right from the Start and in doing so prevent associated trauma and damage. Thinking about the length of time it takes for this trauma to become evident, it is important to understand that the problem is not acute, one-off damage to the urethra, but wear and tear from repeated catheterisation over several years. Typically, someone catheterising five times a day will use2: • 150 catheters per month • 1,825 catheters per year • Over 100,000 catheters in a life time. And if you assume it takes on average one minute to empty the bladder then that’s: • 5 minutes of urethral contact per day • 30 hours of urethral contact per year • 69 days of urethral contact during lifetime. Most catheters claim to have a low friction coating which reduces trauma on insertion. However, maintaining the low-friction coating during catheterisation, not just on insertion, is a key principle in avoiding trauma. LoFric, the name coming from the term Low Friction, has a unique hydrophilic coating with balanced osmolality, meaning it will not dry out or fasten itself to the urethra. LoFric clinical heritage spans 31 years and 13,684 clinical trial patients which means that it’s proven and trusted. Find out more about the science of ISC by contacting us directly. Together, we can get it right from the start.
