PROFESSOR FRANCIS W. SMITH AN UPRIGHT STANCE FOR AN OUTSTANDING IMAGE

DR. PHIL HARRINGTON

GLOBAL LASER THERAPY EXPERT Come and listen to K-Laser USA’s Dr Phil Harrington as he delves into his extensive and expert knowledge of laser therapy, and explains the far-reaching benefits lasers can bring to all of your patients. Phil is head of Education and Clinical support at K-Laser. He earned his Certified Medical Laser Safety Officer accreditation and now lectures about Class IV laser science and physiology; treatment, implementation, and laser safety. Phil is responsible for the high level training of medical practices and professional sports teams using K-Laser, and has provided testimony and consultation to state health boards regarding Class IV therapy laser use. Dr. Phil has written several articles on laser therapy practice implementation and usage, and is also the author of K-Laser’s on-line laser safety certification course Fellow of the American Society for Lasers, Medicine and Surgery.

WEDNESDAY | COPA KEYNOTE THEATRE 1 15.00 - 15.45 Professor Francis W. Smith is a prominent consultant radiologist and qualified sports medicine physician. With three decades of working in MRI behind him, he delves into his extensive knowledge on why upright MRI is the future for spinal imaging. As a radiologist, Francis has worked with MRI since 1980, pioneering its use in clinical practice, especially for the spine and major joints. During the past twelve years he has worked to develop its use for imaging the body in the upright weight bearing position, demonstrating its value for the education of the spine and weight bearing joints.

How Class IV Laser Therapy Can Help Every Patient in Your Clinic Class IV laser therapy is a safe and effective treatment modality that delivers a therapeutic dosage of infrared laser deeper into the body and to larger volumes of tissue. Maximising cellular absorption will enhance circulation, tissue oxygenation and metabolic activity, so any condition, inflammation or tissue damage can benefit from Class IV Laser Therapy. Class IV laser therapy treatment techniques and outcomes will be discussed, along with suggestions on creating optimal patient flow to successfully implement the K-Laser in your practice and enhance your clinical outcomes.

Francis has written over 250 scientific papers and is a reviewer for both The Spine Journal and the European Spine Journal. He was the inaugural president of the Society of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and is a gold medal recipient of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

WEDNESDAY | COPA KEYNOTE THEATRE 1 12.00 - 12.45 Upright MRI- The Only Sensible Way To Image The Spine Upright MRI allows imaging not only when weight bearing, but also with the spine flexed and extended. This ability makes the diagnosis of specific problems more sensitive than is possible from a supine examination alone. The normal MRI appearances of the spine will be shown in different weight bearing positions. In addition a number of case studies demonstrating pathology not demonstrable from supine MRI alone will be demonstrated.

WHY WATER WINS

AQUA THERAPY INNOVATION FOR HEALTH, WELLNESS, AND REHABILITATION

Hydro Physio’s Innovative Products Therapists report that they prefer HYDRO PHYSIO units to pool based treadmills for several reasons; one is due to the ability to monitor and analyse the user’s movements and progression through the glass sides. The user can also watch their own movements on a media screen via a camera positioned around the outside of the unit. Access into HYDRO PHYSIO treadmills for patients with limited stability is easy and provides a confidence building environment for tailored therapy. HYDRO PHYSIO’s underwater treadmills are all registered in the UK as Class 1 medical devices; leading the market in innovation and quality. Throughout the world these devices are helping to reduce rehabilitation times and improve overall fitness.

The HYDROPHYSIO Lifestyle Treadmill At COPA Practice Growth, visitors will be able to witness for themselves HYDRO PHYSIO’s original and most specified hydrotherapy treadmill; The LIFESTYLE. See demonstrations of the device in action! LIFESTYLE treadmills are internationally recognised for patient achievement, sporting excellence, weight loss, wellness, and rehabilitation. As with all HYDRO PHYSIO devices, this model is at the forefront of innovation, providing the maximum level of comfort to users and helping them to achieve their goals. Water depth can be accurately set, which is useful to provide the appropriate level of buoyancy and resistance for users. The maximum water height is 1200mm. Treadmill settings include pre-set speeds for therapy and training. Speed can be set as low as 0.2kph (appropriate for the very first steps of rehab) and can go up to in excess of 10kph. Providing full control of treadmill speeds in 0.1kph increments plus reverse mode facilitates a flexible rehabilitation and

training environment; walking, running, side stepping, forwards, and backwards are all possible. Additionally, upper body rehab and conditioning is possible whilst seated. Water temperature can be adjusted from ambient to 38°C. The correct water temperature is critical for different types of patients or athletes, with a good rehab temperature being 32°C; when training or aqua jogging, 27°C would be more suitable. Resistance jets can be used to increase resistance; at low treadmill speed for water progressive rehab to the lower body and at higher treadmill speeds to increase the intensity of the user’s workout. Each of the treadmill’s functions are controlled via a touchscreen; Each treadmill function is controlled and recorded through this interface. Join us at COPA Practice Growth to see why HYDRO PHYSIO is the next step in upright hydrotherapy, wellness in water, and hydro training. To find out more, visit www.hydrophysio.com.

Why Water? Water offers far greater resistance to motion than air... As a result of this, the user’s confidence is far greater due to water’s supportive environment, promoting slower, more deliberate motion and aiding clearer analysis of the user’s movements.

Hydro Physio Water has been, and remains, the best environment to achieve full function, motion and flexibility regardless of the injury. HYDRO PHYSIO leads the way in aqua therapy treadmills to provide rehabilitation through the relaxing and pain reducing power of water.

Conservative Management of Hip Pathology: Continual Self-Traction, Manual Therapy and Exercise

Applications Of Neuromuscular Taping In Neurology, Lymphatic Drainage And Speech Therapy

Mark Dunwell & Dr Tony Rocklin Hiptrac UK Ltd

Joaquim Coutinho Aneid UK Ltd

Brackett stated in 1890 that “the value of traction in the treatment of the acute condition of hip disease has abundant evidence, both in its relief of the symptoms and in its influence on the course of the disease.” There are many manual therapy techniques that are used and are important in the treatment of hip joint pathology; however traction is one that can provide immediate pain relief to patients while also working to improve general mobility in the long term.

With the introduction of neuromuscular taping (kinesiotaping) in the late 1990s , the predominate applications have been in the area of sports injuries. However, in Southern Europe, there has been extensive medical applications in neurology (post stroke), lymphatic drainage (post-mastectomy) and in speech therapy (cessation of drooling). This workshop will provide healthcare practitioners with the rational and specific applications in neurology , lymphatic drainage and speech therapy.

OUT – BORING EXERCISES, IN – 3D VIRTUAL REALITY COMPUTER GAMES! BioGaming, an Israeli start-up, winner of the 1st prize Innovation Award at Medica 2014, is changing the way physiotherapy rehabilitation is performed.

STAND NUMBER E54 BioGaming has developed 3D virtual reality computer games for physiotherapy rehabilitation. It creates a motivational environment in which tedious, repetitive exercises are “disguised” within exciting personalized video games that direct the patient’s attention towards a fun activity and away from boring technical execution. BioGaming has created entertaining, interactive therapy sessions that look and feel like some of the best video games you’ve ever played. “YuGo makes you forget about your injury! It makes you think about getting to the next level” says 35 year old Nadav Zelber who is recovering from a hip fracture. BioGaming recognizes that doing an exercise the wrong way can sometimes prove worse than not exercising at all. Unprecedented research and development efforts have been invested in an innovative

gesture recognition technology, which analyses the quality of exercise execution. Using data collected by a Kinect camera, our algorithms analyze the performance input in real time so that auditory and visual feedback is provided to patients as they exercise. Therapists use an intuitive dashboard to build patient-specific training programs, and to access detailed qualitative and quantitative reports on patient adherence and status. BioGaming’s technology takes into account the subtle differences between patients in terms of ability, strength, body size, and progress in performance. The BioGaming team comprises both experienced physios who outline clinical needs and requirements, and gaming specialists whose sole purpose is to create the most engaging experience for the patient.

CLAVIBRACE®: TRANSFORMING THE TREATMENT OF CLAVICLE FRACTURES

To see us in action, visit: www.yugonow.com

ClaviBrace® is a patented brace and arm sling system developed as a specific treatment for all types of clavicle fracture. ClaviBrace® has been found to be effective in reducing a displaced fracture, making it a credible natural alternative to surgical plating.

How it Works Retracting the shoulders plays an essential role in removing weight from the fractured clavicle. Applying strong support to the shoulders and incorporating a waist-belt as an anchor, maximum shoulder girdle support has been achieved. For comfortable and safe retraction the brachial plexus must be protected. To attain this, ClaviBrace® has builtin specially shaped high resistance foam shoulder pads. As well as offering safe retraction, pad thickness provides protection against shoulder straps bearing down on the fracture site. Better fracture care prevents later life complications and reduces risk of arthritis & shoulder malfunction. Patient trials show that the trauma of a fractured clavicle causes the entire shoulder girdle to lock down in spasm. ClaviBrace® relaxes muscle spasm, which would otherwise last for several weeks within 10 minutes, encouraging blood flow and optimal muscle and tissue healing. Other features include: •
