But we can never resist tinkering, adding, and just creating a better exhibition. So that’s what we did. And so you’re kept up to speed with everything happening, we’ve put all of that new stuff into this Stop Press, and we’ve also mixed in the essential stuff you shouldn’t be without, like seminar schedules, floor plans, exhibitor lists – that kind of thing. In the main, this is really a nod towards the great exhibitors, speakers, workshops, and features that were either too late to take pride of place in the show guide, or too good for us not to remind you of. the right card payment solution can help your business grow According to the UK Cards Association, there are now over 800m debit and credit card transactions each month in the UK – and in 2011 there were 165.1 million cards in issue1. For customers, cards are flexible, convenient and make it easy to keep track of spending. They are also ideal for high-value transactions because they offer purchase protection. Six in 10 people now say they prefer cards to cash for face-to-face purchases up to £202. it’s not surprising that card acceptance has become an essential part of business planning. here we look at just some of the ways you could accept card payments to help your business grow.
at your premises
At the very minimum, today’s customers expect to be able to pay face-to-face with a card at a fixed or portable Chip and Pin terminal. In fact, not taking cards at retail premises practically amounts to turning away business. New broadband technology means processing transactions can be faster than ever – and the very latest way for customers to pay face-to-face is Contactless, with a wave of a card over a reader.
out and about
If you work away from an office or shop, a mobile card terminal is a great way to make payments immediate and in a secure way for you and your customers. Compact and convenient, these advanced terminals use GPRS phone signals, so you can accept cards almost anywhere.
online
Taking your business online opens it up to new markets, 24 hours a day – and card acceptance is an essential part of that. Developments like Verified by Visa make online card payments more secure than ever for you and your customers – and with the right card partner, this is an easy way to expand your business with minimal outlay. 1 2
The UK Cards Association, July 2012, www.thisismoney.co.uk (Barclaycard research) August 2012

choosing the right card partner
to make the most of card acceptance, you need a card partner that works with your business. there are a lot to choose from and it’s a big decision, you need to consider:
✔ Scale
Opt for a company that enables you to take all the major cards, from Visa to Diners.
✔ reliability
Failed card payments can mean lost sales, so you need a company with almost zero ‘downtime’.
✔ a well-run helpdesk
Look for one that’s open whenever you are, and decide whether a UK-based team is important to you.
✔ value for money
Don’t get caught out by headline rates – they often hide expensive extras.
✔ Fast payment
The time it takes for card payments to reach your account can vary from one partner to another.
✔ a complete service
Now or in the future, your business may need more than one solution – perhaps a combination of mobile terminals and eCommerce. To keep things simple, go for a company that offers them all.

BUSINESSES FOR SALE LIVE
WHY NOT BUY AN EXISTING BUSINESS? As a visitor to The Business Show, you’re probably considering starting your own business. But have you considered the alternative route into business – buying an existing venture? While not for everyone, there are many compelling advantages to buying a going concern:
1. INCOME FROM DAY ONE An established business, assuming it’s a successful operation, will have a history of generating profit. So as long as the transition goes smoothly you’ll generate income from the outset. Compare this to starting from scratch, with start-ups rarely breaking even until year two, three or even longer.
2. LOWER RISK Again, this is contingent on the business’s finances, but careful due diligence and choosing a business you are well equipped to run puts you in a strong position to thrive. Although the failure rate for start-ups is often overstated, it’s widely acknowledged that more new businesses fail within five years than succeed.
3. RAISING FINANCE There seems little prospect of credit conditions easing any time soon and banks remain risk-averse when it comes to untested propositions whose value is only hypothetically set out in a business plan. An established business, by contrast, can promise to repay the loan from revenues projected from actual, historical profits. Seen as a safer bet, successful existing businesses can attract finance more readily and on more favourable terms.
4. TRAINING AND CONSULTATION Going into business alone, for all its rewards, can be a lonely adventure. In the formative stages you may have to build the business alone, acting as visionary, manager, accountant, administrator and salesperson all in one. Buy a business, however, and the seller may agree to remain at the company in an advisory position for a transition period post-sale.
5. BRAND RECOGNITION Already established in the market, your acquisition should come with a customer base and a level of repeat business. Inheriting brand-name recognition, it should be easier to attract new custom than if you started a new venture and had to convince potential customers to trust in an untested business.

WHY DO PEOPLE MAKE STARTING
UP AND GROWING A BUSINESS DIFFICULT? IF I WAS TO MENTION ”INTEGRATED SYSTEMS” TO YOU, IT WOULD BE NO SURPRISE IF YOU JUMP TO THE CONCLUSION THAT I MUST BE TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING TECHNICAL.
But let me give you a story about how most businesses get up and running and why “integrated” is a fundamental mind-set, not a business tool. When a person decides to start up a new business, it is common to either start on your own or with another person. Either way, at that very moment the entire business is completely integrated. All decisions and processes are in one place; your head. It’s what we like to call the honeymoon period because at that time it is easy to understand what needs to be done and where everything is. As the business grows over the upcoming months it gets increasingly hard to track everything in the head, so we start making lists. Slowly the business begins running from

lists on paper, lists in spread sheets and lists in documents or post-it notes. As demand for the company continues to increase, the business has to start hiring additional resources. This is when problems start to occur. Processes are in the mind and information is spread around. For someone else to come in and understand what needs to be done it gets very difficult, and the business owner Becomes frustrated that the business isn’t being run as it is in their head whilst at the same time is tied up in running the company. Overtime things get progressively worse. More staff will take on more responsibilities as pressure on existing resources increases. In the wake of this everyone forms their own processes based on bits of information they have; Processes between each stage typically runs via email, phone calls or perhaps shouting across a room. It is common for dedicated computer systems to be introduces to aid with individual jobs, such as an accounting package, but essentially everything has changed from being in one place, to now having lots of individual entities and information in several places. The business is no longer integrated.
This lack of integration develops new problems where it is difficult to track issues, slow to process orders and will put a huge strain on the business owner when trying to keep service levels up and ensuring that all the extra resources required are funded. It is typical for businesses to hit these issues at around 3 years trading, which is also commonly known as the time where many businesses fail. The issue in the past has been that it is too complicated and too expensive to have everything integrated in the business from the start. Fortunately this is exactly what Neetrix tackles. It is a system that
brings together all of your sales, accounting, front and back office management needs in a single online solution that is extremely easy to use and is affordable by all businesses. This means that you can start small and grow big without investing in expensive IT equipment or software.
You do not even have to worry about backing up as it is all taken care of for you. And most importantly, your business will stay continually integrated even if you and your staff work in completely difference places.
