CONTROLLER/ TEST BENCH One of the greatest project developments in the last few months was the controller as well as its programming so it is up to Greenpower’s standards and regulations. For the past days, the controller was finished and is now ready to be tested on track, with the final tests going towards extracting the most of our controller’s potential.
It was also decided to expand the uses of the previously constructed test bench. Apart from engine, controller and battery testing, the test bench is now suited for aerodynamic testing . For this purpose, the cooler was fitted with ten temperature sensors to ensure the highest degree of confidence in the cooling tests.

MOTIP MOTIP has been supporting PSEM since last year, with the supply of paint sprays for the surface finishing of the monocoque molds. This was essential because it allowed us to obtain a surface with a much greater quality. This year, MOTIP has provided sprays to the project, but this time they will be applied in the molds of the wheel caps that were redone.
Shimano has been PSEM’s partner since the beginning, and is a reference in the field of cycling. Throughout its over 90-year old history, it has constantl y been at the forefront of its field, developing cutting-edge technologies and products such as bicycle components, fishing tackle and rowing equipment. Neves & Neves Metalomecânica is a company specialized in the transformation of machine components and has been PSEM’s partner since last season. Last season, using its innovative technical resources, Neves&Neves machined both steering arms as well as the engine brackets. This season, Neves & Neves promptly machined the steering semi-axles that were redesigned and optimized for the new bearings. Through the precision work of Neves & Neves, the necessary tolerances and that the optimal shape that was designed were met.

MORE NEWS... ENGINE COOLINGAIR NOZZLES After last year’s competitions the team noticed that there was room for improvements in the GP17’s engine cooling. Thus, the team’s aerodynamics department decided to redesign the nozzle connecting the engine case to the air intakes. This nozzle, which narrows to favour airflow, was well studied computationally. In addition to this, special attention was given to the position of the pilot and its helmet. This is important because the air intakes are placed next to the pilot’s head and it is necessary to ensure that the air flows accordingly. Another detail that the team is paying special attention to is the nozzles’ construction. It is imperative to get a good surface. To accomplish, and to machine its intricate geometry, we are working with FabLab EDP, for it to be 3D-printed, For this support we are very grateful.

DIGITAL WEEK PSEM was at Siemens’ Digital Week, which was a week dedicated to showcasing the projects associated to the Siemens brand in a business environment with high-end companies and decision makers of several companies. In the two days in which it was present, PSEM exhibited its prototype and showed the technical drawings as well as the overall CAD of the project designed in SolidEdge. In display was the direction system we have designed for the new prototype. Alongside our display, Siemens has 3D-printed a few of our components. We want to thank Siemens for the enormous contribution that has been given to us as well as the availability during Siemens Digital Week!
GETTING TO KNOW THE TEAM INTERVIEW

TOMÁS FERNANDES In this month’s newsletter we present Tomás Fernandes, a 4th year student of the Mechanical Engineering course and one of the coordinators of the Electronics’ team. At the beginning of his 3 rd year, in November 2016, after deciding to occupy his time with the motorsports area, he meets PSEM, goes through the recruitment phase and becomes a

When questioned about his future and the project’s, he indicates that the goal is to present an increasingl y competitive car every year and that the project must also maintain the rigor in the elaboration of the portfolio and other documentation (rigor that has been providing awards over the past few years). This means that he intends to improve last year’s 6th place. Finally, Tomás indicates that the main objective of the project is learning and, consequently, the training of better qualified engineers, but cannot hide that he aims to win a race this year and continue in this evolving team.
