GREEN LETTER
Nº 6
JOBSHOP/IST’S DAY On May 9, PSEM went to Jobshop. In this fair organized by the IST Students’ Union, we were able to bring the GP17 and publicize our sponsors to the students and the several companies that also attended this event.
PSEM also had the opportunity to put both GP17 and GP14.EVOII on display on Dia do Técnico on the 23th. On this day in which IST celebrates its 107th anniversary, we gave the opportunity to countless interested people of all ages to know more about our project, the course of our team, the evolution of the components used in the construction of the cars and the competitions in which we participate internationally.
COORDINATOR’S REMARKS T h e te a m i s i n cre a s i n g l y enthusiastic about this season’s competitions. This ye ar we will participate in 4 qualifying events: September 2 nd in East Fortune; on the 9th of September at Dunsfold Park; September 16th at Castle Combe, and September 19 th at the Aintree Golf Center. Finally, we hope to end our journey with a great result in the events of the international final on the 5 th and 6 th of October in Rockingham. We will do our best to represent all those who support us and the Instituto Superior Técnico as students.
“WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE, I WANTED TO BE INVOLVED IN THINGS THAT WOULD CHANGE THE WORLD.”- ELON MUSK
OUR SPONSORS B&M Barros&Moreira is one of PSEM’s most recent partners. This group is dedicated to the production of a wide range of bathroom appliances and related accessories.
SKF SKF is a longtime partner of PSEM and one of the most prominent companies in its field of operation. Given this, SKF is one of the main supplier of materials for our prototypes. In the GP17.EVO, thanks to SKF’s extensive catalog, we have been able to replace the ball bearings used at the end of the drive shaft with self-aligning bearings. These are ideal for this situation and allowed us to increase the efficiency of the system, for which we are very grateful.
Using its parts production capabilities, Barros&Moreira machined the winglet mounts. These parts are important structural elements, since they establish the connection between the winglet, the part that covers the drive shaft, and either the monocoque or the cover of the wheel. This parts had been redesigned using the “generative design” function of Solid Edge, which led to weight reduction. For the manufacture of these parts we could not be more grateful.
In addition to this, we can not understate our gratitude for the contribution SKF has made to the construction of PSEM’s 3D printer.
WE THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORT GIVEN MONTHLY NEWSLETTER | PSEM | JUNE 2018
MORE NEWS... 3D PRINTER/ TESTING BENCH FOR THE ENGINE Two of the projects that are currentl y being developed by PSEM are the construction of a 3D printer and a bench for engine cooling tests.
SIEMENS PLM VISIT
The purpose of the printer is to produce simple, non-structural parts for the car, whose geometry is not easil y machined. It is imperative to acknowledge the support of FabLab EDP and SKF. FabLab EDP has agreed to machine the acrylic plates which will serve as the structural basis for the entire printer and SKF will supply all the bearings required for it. The design of the engine cooling test bench involves members of the mechanical, electronic and aerodynamic design areas. This bench will make sure that engine cooling is effective, so that the car’s performance is not compromised, both in the test and in the future.

The past month we were visited by Martin Koczmann, the academic project manager for the EMEA zone at Siemens PLM Software. On this visit we had the opportunity to show Martin Koczmann how we use Solid Edge and NX to design our car and also to make a presentation about last season - last year’s project, the construction of the GP17 and also the competitions in England. Along with Martin, we also had on our workshop CADFLOW and Siemens Portugal whose support has been essential through the past four seasons. We hope you enjoyed seeing the team, the GP17 and got as excited for the 2018 competitions as we are!
GETTING TO KNOW THE TEAM INTERVIEW
“WILL TO UNDERSTAND THE ENGINEERING BEHIND WHAT SURROUNDS US” “explore and strengthen the capacities of the departments that constitute the project”.
ALEXANDRE MENDES Alexandre Mendes comes from Alfragide. When confronted with the decision of what to pursue in university, he chose engineering above design because of his “will to understand the engineering behind what surrounds us.” Its entry into this project was due to the desire and interest of the practical application of theoretical knowledge and due to the “premises behind” PSEM, where Alexandre took to

He currently is the Jack of all trades in PSEM, ranging from human resources management, logistics, financial management and materials acquisition. Now in his second year at PSEM, Alexandre feels he has gained a lot of experience in the previous year. He feels that “it is part of the tasks to show the recruits our techniques and methods so that they have the bases that allowed us to grow” without ever changing the attitude of the team full of increasing the competitiveness of the project. As for the current team, Alexandre says that “it has the capacity needed to reach the objectives proposed at the beginning of the season” and that it will show even more tenacity during the competition. “The future is in the expansion of the project to different competitions outside England,” says Alexandre. And he is part of the team that intends to do what is possible.
