H London Ambulance Service

Ambulance crews in London have begun wearing body cameras to protect them from violent assaults and threats. The new kit was rolled out as part of a trial, starting in areas where London Ambulance Service staff and volunteers are considered to be most at risk, based on previous incidents. Figures from London Ambulance Service show there were 529 violent incidents between April 2020 and January this year. Those attacks include kicking, punching, headbutting, biting and spitting and there have also been 31 assaults with weapons. Meanwhile, during the same period, there were 834 incidents of verbal abuse and threats. As well as the cameras, London Ambulance Service has recruited two violence reduction officers and launched the #NotPartoftheJob campaign, as part of its ongoing work to protect staff and volunteers.

H Royal Manchester Children's Hospital A recent project has seen youth workers embedded in A&E departments across hospitals in Greater Manchester to engage with people who have been affected by violence. Launched at four Greater Manchester hospitals in May, ‘GM Navigator’ is a youth-focused project which sees a team of youth workers based in hospitals alongside dedicated clinical leads to support vulnerable young people aged 10 to 25 who are admitted to Emergency Departments because of violence. They will work with the young person for up to six weeks, helping them to access local support networks and prevent further violence. The project has been commissioned by the Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) and is being delivered by the national charity, Oasis. Royal Bolton Hospital, Salford Royal Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital are involved in the 12-month pilot and researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University will evaluate the service.

H Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS

A 2020 Survey revealed that 26 per cent of NHS staff had experienced at least one incident of abuse or harassment in the last 12 months. Despite initial concerns, the decision to introduce body worn cameras at Chelsea and Westminster has been successful in reducing acts of aggression. The devices have helped to de-escalate many incidents and have made staff feel more confident at work.

H Guy's & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust
