LEARN TO MAKE & REPAIR GUITARS HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF MUSIC

As we celebrate over 45 years of teaching guitar making and repair we continue to build on a foundation of knowledge, experience, and creativity. Merging tradition with innovation, our goal is to keep pace with a changing art and industry. As an accredited institution our primary objective is to provide you with the skills and knowledge you will need to enter the world of professional guitar making and repair. Federal Student Financial Aid is available for those who qualify. Roberto-Venn is also approved for Veterans Benefits.

GUITAR MAKING & REPAIR COURSE (5 months) The Guitar Making and Repair Course consists of practical and theoretical training in acoustic and electric guitar construction and repair. The school offers two five-month (880 hour) courses each year, beginning in February and late August. Class size ranges from 25 – 40 students, with an average ‘student to teacher’ ratio of 6 to 1.

The workshop is equipped with specialized tools, jigs and fixtures. Instructors provide close supervision for all hands-on training, including safety instruction in the use of hand tools and power woodworking equipment, for all milling, cutting, routing and sanding of guitar construction operations.

BUILDING THE STUDENT PROJECT GUITARS The curriculum revolves around each student building a minimum of two ‘project’ guitars, including an acoustic steel string and an electric guitar (6 or 7 string), or a 4 or 5 string electric bass. The finest air-dried woods are made available for the students’ instruments. Wood choices include: rosewood, mahogany, ebony, maple, walnut, spruce, cedar, myrtle, bubinga, koa and other woods. No pre-made or ‘kit’ parts are used for guitar construction. Students choose from a wide selection of machine heads, bridges, pickups and other guitar accessories and components that are obtained from leading manufacturers. During the five month course, time is devoted to specialized training in guitar repair and the ‘start-up’ aspects of establishing a lutherie business, including special guest lectures from industry professionals, graduates and faculty.

GUITAR REPAIR Courses (10 weeks) Roberto-Venn also offers two accredited Guitar Repair Courses tailored to the individual interested in a career in guitar repair. The 10 week repair course and 10 week advanced repair course prepares graduates for a job with retail music stores and repair facilities. A secondary objective is to prepare graduates for road tech work and for apprenticeships and entrepreneurial start-ups.

ADDITIONAL SPECIALTY CLASSES Roberto-Venn offers a variety of two-day, evening, and week-long classes covering the following specialties: Pickup Winding Workshops, Mojotone Tube Amp Build, Guitar Effect Pedal Workshop, Set-up and Maintenance Workshop, Electric Guitar Case Building, Lap Steel Construction Course, and French Polishing Course.
