Education for an impact

Study social innovation

In 2010, PSU School of Business founded Impact Entrepreneurs to unleash the power of business for social impact. Bringing together community partners, professors, students, and more, the center delivers initiatives that strengthen organizations, build entrepreneurial impactfocused leaders, and catalyze social innovation.

The Business of Social Innovation Certificate program brings together skills in social innovation, social entrepreneurship, and design thinking. Offered through Impact Entrepreneurs, it allows undergraduates, graduates, and professionals of all ages to gain a set of skills to launch, lead, or manage high-impact social change initiatives.

CHANGEMAKER CAMPUS

PSU IS 1 OF 24 INSTITUTIONS SHARING A VISION FOR SOCIAL CHANGE.

THINK & LEARN GLOBALLY Sameer Allabadi – PSU Grad ‘13 Graduate Student, London School of Economics (LSE) Fearless Changemaker When most people think of finance, they think of Wall Street wheeling and dealing. Sameer, a native of Kuwait who has lived in Australia and Lebanon, wants to change that perception. “My long-term career goal is to play a constructive role in alleviating global poverty by utilizing certain finance mechanisms. Though achieving this goal through the use of finance may be difficult to envision, informational sessions at Mercy Corps Global HQ here in Portland taught me otherwise.” Sameer credits both his experiences growing up and his time at PSU as instrumental to the development of his goals. “My background is actually a blessing in disguise because I’ve experienced a profound level of global consciousness. Now, I am proud to say that my journey toward global awareness culminates with a Bachelor of Science from PSU.”

Today’s business world is an interconnected, global marketplace. Tomorrow’s successful leaders will share a global perspective, understanding the impact of their business decisions on the world. PSU School of Business offers many ways for you to gain a global perspective, such as the International Business Studies Certificate and multiple study abroad opportunities.

Megan Ellis – PSU Grad ‘13 Project Coordinator, Bridgetown Natural Foods Fearless Explorer Megan, a Vancouver, B.C. native, visited Portland for a high school volleyball tournament during her senior year and fell in love with the campus and city immediately. “I loved how the campus was integrated into the downtown area, and it just seemed like a great place to live for the next four years.” In a new city (and country), the Food Industry Management Certificate program faculty played a major role in connecting Megan to industry. “They played a huge role. I was able to complete three internships. We weren’t just learning from text books.” And her experience at PSU’s business school has introduced her to diverse industries, cultures, and different people from all walks of life. “I got to interact with a lot of different groups of people. For me it was just a really great experience.”

” EXTREMELY WELL-CONNECTED TO THE PORTLAND BUSINESS COMMUNITY.” — The Princeton Review

Fun PDX Facts What rain? Portland receives less rain per year than cities like Seattle, Houston, and Atlanta. Meals on wheels. The city is home to over 700 food trucks. (Did we mention our Food Industry Management Certificate program has 100% job placement?) Feeling lucky? The world’s smallest park — and leprechaun colony — is inside the city limits. We have a football team. Well, you might call it soccer. But the Timbers are one hot ticket. We’re #2. PDX is the second safest city in America according to Forbes magazine.

Learn and Live in Portland Take advantage of studying in the heart of one of America’s most livable (and unique) cities. Portland is home to a dynamic business community and exciting recreation. Whatever your passion, Portland has a place for you.

Charlene Wesler – PSU Grad ‘14 Owner, The Gaufre Gourmet Fearless Momtrepreneur Charlene, a single mom of three kids, went back to school to get her degree in accounting after being laid off in 2009. During her time at PSU, she opened her business, the Gaufre Gourmet food cart, serving delicious Belgian sugar waffles. Charlene found the program options and reputation of PSU School of Business a perfect fit. “PSU helped me to be successful both working and studying full time because I used everything in my classes toward my business.” The first year of the cart business was difficult and challenging, earning Charlene a minimum wage income at best, but today business is booming. “We just appeared on a Food Network reality show called Food Cart Wars, and we just opened a second location after winning in the episode. As a mom and a business owner, I have a lot on my plate. I’ll be graduating in two weeks, my business is growing, and I know I’ll never be back at that place where I couldn’t provide for my family.”

Couple that with access to our world-class faculty and one of the mostaffordable degrees in the state, and you have a deal you can’t refuse.

Graduate in 4 years — guaranteed PSU promises that, if you sign the 4-year graduation agreement, you will get the support and courses necessary to graduate in four years or PSU will not charge you tuition for any remaining required courses. At PSU, you pay for only four years, guaranteed. (Transfers, never fear. We have a two-year program for you.)

David Pagliarulo – PSU Grad ‘10 CPA, Deloitte Fearless Career Changer Prior to attending PSU, David worked as a head- hunter for accounting talent. “Through my experiences in that role, I knew the PSU School of Business was well respected in the minds of hiring managers,” says David. Wanting to make a career switch and become a CPA, David enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate Accounting Certificate program in 2010. After graduation, he earned the highest score on the Oregon CPA exam and landed a role at the Big Four firm Deloitte. “The focused nature of the curriculum of the Post-Bacc Accounting Program was the perfect preparation for the CPA exam. Deloitte respects the merits of the PSU accounting program. Its reputation preceded my interview. The high quality of the education itself was paramount as preparation for the Big Four.”

Ted Khoury – Professor Fearless Mentor Professor Khoury teaches management and strategy at Portland State’s School of Business, including the Senior Capstone Strategic Management Course. “The diversity of projects is amazing. The common theme is that the community client partners are those that are in the most need. We have helped countless nonprofits, the City of Portland, food carts, app-based entrepreneurs, media outlets, low- and high-tech startups, several service-based firms, and many PSU-based clients. This has amounted to several business plans, marketing plans, patent-licensing plans, diversification strategies, and more,” says Professor Khoury. “This represents some of the more tangible growth that the students are able to see over the course of the term, but more intangibly, I see them learn to take ownership of their ideas and critical thinking skills and ultimately learn how to ‘sell’ themselves, the work of their peers, and their ideas more effectively.”
