It’s been a busy year so far at Phyllis Tuckwell, as we have continued to extend and improve our Hospice Care, funding these developments through our many events and activities. The successful transfer of Guildford’s Beacon Service to Phyllis Tuckwell earlier this year is at the heart of these developments and we are delighted that our different clinical teams are now working as one, to make it easier for patients, their families and referrers. We are very excited about the opportunities our strengthened clinical team brings and look forward to continuing to work with GPs, our hospital colleagues and other healthcare professionals, to improve supportive and end of life care services for local people. In May we launched an awareness campaign to challenge the misconceptions which many people have about Hospice Care, seeing it as simply providing medical and clinical care for last days in an In-Patient Unit. Our campaign highlights the wide range of other services which we offer, including therapies, counselling, chaplaincy support, social work advice, support for carers and relatives, and care for patients in their own homes, at the Hospice and Beacon Centre. Find out how we have cared for Roger and his wife Liz, in our patient story on page 3, and read more about how we helped patients like Karen and Ronald with both practical and spiritual matters, on page 10. We have also been busy redesigning all of our patient leaflets to provide up to date information about all our services, and introducing a new, distinctive look, which sees each leaflet feature a different member of staff or volunteer. The same design runs throughout this magazine and we hope that you will recognise many of the faces on the leaflets! These developments and improvements help us maintain our position as an outstanding provider of supportive and end of life care – but we wouldn’t be able to do any of it without you – so thank you once again for your generous support. Happy reading!

mobility. Acupuncture relieved the pain in his legs and knees, and an occupational therapist visited him at home to evaluate his need for specialized equipment. A keen sportsman, Roger Mockford had always been fit and healthy, but after a bout of pneumonia left him with breathing difficulties, July 2014 - Roger is referred to he was referred Phyllis Tuckwell. for a series of tests. Doctors discovered heart problems and a bone tumour, and Roger was started on a course of radiotherapy. However, he soon developed chronic stomach cramps, as the treatment had stopped his digestive system from functioning properly. The right side of Roger’s heart was failing and a pacemaker was fitted, but then his kidneys failed. He began to lose awareness of where he was and who people were. “He tried to escape from Intensive Care,” remembers his wife, Liz. “And another day he proposed to me – but we’ve been married for over 40 years!”
Roger was still very withdrawn though. He ate little, slept for hours and found it hard to breathe. Day Hospice staff referred him to the Patient and Family Support team, and he began seeing a psychologist and a hypnotherapist, to combat his anxiety. “That’s when the turning point came,” Liz smiles. “You just woke up.” Now, instead of using a wheelchair, Roger is able to walk with a frame, and for short journeys uses just one stick. He remembers with pride the day Liz stood with Hospice staff, as he walked from his car to the building on his own. “His face was an absolute picture,” beams Liz proudly. “His confidence and physical strength have increased so much.” We have also cared for Liz, who has attended a Carer’s Pampering Day, where she had a make-over, haircut and massage, and Wellbeing Workshops, where she and Roger have learnt relaxation techniques. “This is one of the happiest places,” says Liz. “Everybody is so positive. They have time to talk and make you feel special.” “Coming here has given us a future,” says Roger.
Roger was eventually discharged from hospital, but was back again just a week later. “We did every ward but Maternity!” he jokes. He was moved from observation wards to isolation wards, until eventually a consultant in the Palliative Care team referred him to Phyllis Tuckwell. “I just thought, ‘that’s it, my time’s up’,” he says. At the Hospice, Roger was given an assessment and the couple were shown around. “Everybody was smiling; there wasn’t one miserable face,” Liz remembers. Roger began a series of weekly Day Hospice sessions, where he received physiotherapy to strengthen his muscles and regain his

Strictly Having Fun!
The Height of Fundraising
Our annual Strictly Dancing event was once again hugely popular, drawing in an audience of over 600 and raising just under £28,000!
26 participants made a hair-raising abseil from the top of the Cathedral’s 160ft bell tower down to their supporters below, in our annual Guildford Cathedral abseil - raising a sky-high £9,000 for Hospice Care.
Held at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley, the evening was presented by ITV weatherman Alex Beresford, and featured Aljaž Škorjanec and Janette Manrara from BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, with performances from the University of Surrey’s Ballroom and Latin American dance class and live music from band Premier Cru. Six Photo: Paul Fitchett Images Strictly Learn to Dance couples also took to the floor - after just ten weeks’ of dance lessons - and were thrilled to receive a standing ovation for their Paso Doble and American Smooth! Thanks to Mr Bob Potter OBE for donating the use of his venue, Paul Fitchett Images, Andrea Crosby from All About Hair, Angela and Stephanie from Angela’s School of Dancing, Lisa Burns for helping with hair and make-up and all of our fantastic volunteers.

Video producers NRG-Digital filmed the day, including the abseils of our youngest and oldest participants: ten-year old Florence Luff and 76-year old Dr Charles Warner (see their video at www.pth.org.uk/fundraising). One of the participants enjoyed the abseil so much that she did it twice, but the surprise abseil of the day goes to the passer-by who casually asked if there were any spaces left. He was answered yes and kindly made a generous donation to Phyllis Tuckwell for his experience. If you fancy our next challenge, join us on Saturday 10th October at London’s 2012 Olympic Park, to abseil down the ArcelorMittal Orbit! Walking on Sunshine! Over 300 people took part in our Walk for the Wards, and they couldn’t have asked for better weather, as Hampshire’s stunning countryside was bathed in glorious sunshine. Starting in the picturesque village of Crondall, participants took either a five or ten mile circular route, with spectacular views stretching all the way to Bentley. We would like to thank all those who took part in the Walk and helped us to raise a fantastic £17,600. Thanks also to all of our wonderful volunteers for organising and marshalling the route, Andrew Lodge Estate Agents for sponsoring the event, Paul Fitchett for taking photos and Marks and Spencer for providing the delicious scones for the cream tea afterwards!
Pamper Day for Patients and Carers
Dove Lounge hosts Carers' Club
Deputy Mayoress Maureen Ward with Saturday Club members
Crossroads Care Surrey have launched their Farnham Saturday Club, which will now be held in the Dove Lounge at the Hospice every Saturday, from 11am-3pm. Crossroads Care Surrey provides respite breaks to unpaid carers. Its social clubs allow carers an extended, affordable break of up to five hours, during which they can pursue their own interests, knowing their loved one is in safe hands. At Phyllis Tuckwell, we support around 350 carers every year, so we understand how important these clubs are. For more information about the Saturday Club, please contact Sheila Hargreave on 07783 018391 or email sheila.hargreave@ crossroadscaresurrey.org.uk
The wife of a patient has her makeup done
Nine patients and three relatives came along to our Pamper Day in June, where visiting makeup artist Lee Pycroft and her team offered makeovers, hand massages, manicures and pedicures, while Sue a volunteer who leads armchair yoga sessions at the Hospice - held a meditation session. Afterwards, everyone was treated to a wonderful buffet lunch, provided by the Hospice catering team.
Lee Pycroft has been in the beauty industry for over 20 years and offers complimentary makeover sessions to women who are facing challenging circumstances, using makeup as a tool for boosting self-esteem and aiding healing. “It was really amazing,” commented one patient. “The ladies took so much time making us feel relaxed and comfortable”. This was the second Pamper Day which we have held for patients and carers this year, and we hope to hold another in the Autumn.

Take a Donation Station to work! De-clutter and donate! If your house has more ornaments than an antiques shop, or you look at your wardrobe with despair - why not Bag It And Give? Bag It and Give (BIAG) is a simple way to raise bags of cash to help us care for those affected by a serious progressive illness, such as cancer. Distributed throughout the local community, our distinctive purple and orange bags can be filled with all your unwanted items, and include Gift Aid forms, so that we can raise 25% more money at no extra cost to you! Simply leave your filled bag and completed Gift Aid form on your doorstep on your allocated day and we will collect it – or alternatively drop the bag off at your local PTHC shop, if you prefer.
Is your workplace looking for ways to support a good cause? As well as providing outstanding medical and nursing care, we also offer social work advice, counselling and chaplaincy support - and recently even organised a confirmation and a wedding blessing at the Hospice!
Hospice confirmation Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was just 39 years old. Initial treatments seemed to have beaten the cancer, but it returned, spreading to her liver and lungs. She came to the Hospice in April, just weeks after she was so ill that she was given last rites. “The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming,” she said. “They made me feel at home.” Whilst speaking to Rev. Sue Lattey - one of our chaplains - Karen mentioned that she wasn’t confirmed, and was delighted when Sue suggested that she could be confirmed at the Hospice. The service took place just a week later in the Hospice chapel, led by the Right Reverend Christopher Herbert, and afterwards those present celebrated with champagne and a beautiful cake made by the catering team. “Everything is well in my world,” Karen smiled. “I’m prepared for death I have no fear.”
Page Page10 10
Karen’s service in the Hospice chapel.
A Wedding Blessing Cancer patient Ronald Raymond Cox, former Lord Major of Westminster, was admitted to our In-Patient Unit at the end of April. He and his family were worried that he would not be well enough to attend his daughter’s wedding at the end of May, and spoke to our Patient and Family Support team about organising a wedding blessing at the Hospice. The service was arranged for the following week, and Ronald watched with pride as his daughter Alison and her fiancé Peter received their blessing from Phyllis Tuckwell chaplain Rev. Sue Lattey. With friends and family gathered round, the couple’s dog as ring bearer and glorious sunshine flooding in through the windows, it was indeed a very special service.
The couple’s dog was ring bearer.
Sadly both Karen and Ronald died in June. Their families would like to thank everyone at the Hospice for their wonderful care and support.
Many people think of hospices simply as buildings with rows of beds in them. But a huge 85% of our care is given outside of our In-Patient Unit, and 35% of patients in our IPU return home after having their pain controlled.
for sharing their story, and to Jack Taylor Productions for giving their time and skills to create this video for us free of charge.
We are working to challenge the misconceptions which people have about Hospice Care, starting with a video starring one of our very own patients… John Maturin has battled with cancer since 2001 and has been in and out of the Hospice since 2013, when he was first admitted to IPU. He and his daughter Hannah told local video producer Jack Taylor about how the Hospice came into their lives in their hour of need, offering emotional and practical support as well as medical and clinical care. They don’t see the Hospice as somewhere John nearly lost his life, but as a place which gave him his life back. And although we can’t cure John’s cancer, we have eased his pain, helped him to regain his independence and provided support and counselling for both him and his family. “I think people have a conception of hospices as places where people go to die,” John told Jack. “But they couldn’t be more wrong. This is a happy place. It’s not a place to die - it’s a place to live, and to live for as long as you possibly can.” Our thanks go to John and Hannah
Visit our website www.pth.org.uk to watch John’s video. Over the summer months, we continued to spread the word about our Hospice Care by teaming up with Eagle Radio, whose Love Tour saw them broadcasting from a different town in Surrey and Hampshire every day, for two weeks in June. With a series of awareness advertisements on Eagle radio, and the answers to their Breakfast Show’s £1,000 Minute competition displayed in all of our retail shops, we managed to reach over 173,000 people with our Misconceptions message.
