a whoosh and even a hovercraft built on stage. A surge in festival ticket sales before the summer holidays means that the afternoon schools show is selling well, but organisers South Kesteven District Council have reassured parents that the 6.30pm family show will still be available come September. History tells us that dreaded plague of the 1660’s never reached Newton’s home village of Woolsthorpe by Colsterworth, but 350 years on it’s about to! Happily it’s actors and the community putting on the show, but the Greenwich
and Lewisham Young People’s Theatre will make it look very convincing, complete with body collectors and Charlatan quacks with their horrid bird masks. A full educational programme includes a hands-on Family Science Day in Grantham’s George Centre. Defying gravity is what Oakham’s Razor is all about with their St Wulfram’s Church displays. And for those who love a hedgehog, naturalist Sasha Norris has a special show at the King’s School Old Hall on the same day.

Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School provides a first-class curriculum and nurtures talent to help all of its students achieve personal excellence. Together we can ensure that our young people are safe, happy and ambitious in every area of the school.
Banovallum School has been serving the local community for fifty years and is housed in a well-equipped, professional learning environment. The school is very well supported by parents and community partners are fully committed to offering an inclusive and open entry policy to local young people. The school is led on the principles of hard work and a personalised approach. We know our students as individuals and celebrate them as such. We strive to ensure that the conditions in school are created to allow the students to become the best they can be, not only in academic terms but in Sport, Creative and Performing Arts and citizenship as well. Banovallum places a great deal of emphasis on student leadership and our students are rightly proud of their school. We believe that young people learn

best when they are happy and our most important principle is that they enjoy and achieve. There has never been a better time to join The Vale Academy. That is the view of Principal Nicola Williams, overseeing an exciting period at the Brigg academy. Academic performance is strong – highlighted by Ofsted inspectors – while its £13.9-million new building opens in January. An opportunity for prospective students and their parents to hear about both is the Year 6 Open Day and Evening on Thursday, 6th October. Mrs Williams said: “I’ve always been incredibly proud of the quality of education our children receive. “Ranked against similar schools across the country, the Department

Academy values at the heart of the community The Priory Witham Academy provides a positive, inclusive and enriched environment which celebrates and values the success and effort of its community. Central to the academy’s ethos is challenge and progress for all which is upheld by an innovative skillsbased curriculum; placing high value on fostering a love of reading, mathematics and science along with the creative arts and modern foreign languages. Learners at The Witham Academy are provided with opportunities which stretch far beyond the curriculum to enrich their learning experience through an extensive extra-curricular offer and a vast array of educational visits.
Students in the Air Cadet Force (ACF) at The Priory City of Lincoln Academy have enjoyed another exciting year in school and in the local community.
Witham staff and students build positive relationships to create a foundation for learning where students are inspired and aspire to achieve.
Pupils teamed up with cadets from fellow Priory academies to complete Army field exercises and summer camps at RAF Honington and Beckingham training area, together with a Camo Day at Navenby Primary School where cadets taught classes for the day.
The academy’s strong community values promote responsibility and respect which nurture learners to become responsible citizens who are better equipped to succeed in the world around them; it is this sense of community which stays with Witham’s students for many years.

Branston Community Academy has rightly gained a reputation as one of the very best schools in Lincolnshire. This year our school has been awarded an “outstanding” rating by Ofsted, one of only six per cent of schools across the country to receive the top grading in the last year. In 2015 the school received two national awards for the academic achievements of our students: Top 10% school for value added progress at GCSE Top 10% of non-selective schools for attainment at GCSE We are most proud of the fact that academic excellence is achieved within a truly caring, supportive and nurturing environment. Our recent Ofsted report said “the school promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding extremely well…and encourages and celebrates success”. We look forward to welcoming you at our Open Evening.

celebration. Though all schools will need to wait for a confirmed Progress 8 measure it is clear that John Spendluffe will be comfortably above the national average. Success is down to excellent teaching and learning supported by wider curriculum opportunities for students. Over this summer, for example, students had the opportunity to take part in a water sports trip to France and successful Duke of Edinburgh and Young Enterprise schemes continue to thrive. With a positive climate for learning and a judgement of good or outstanding from Ofsted for well over 10 years there is plenty to confirm that the school is a good place to be!

Come and find out how your child can ASPIRE to a brighter future… Choosing a secondary school is one of the most important decisions you will have to make for you and your child. The decision
making process will be eased by gathering as much information about possible schools in advance of the October deadline. With this in mind, we would like to extend an invitation to parents/carers and your child to come and tour the Academy where you will see firsthand the excellent behaviour of our pupils and the high-calibre learning taking place in the classrooms. Sir William Robertson Academy is delighted as being judged as ‘Good’ in all areas of the school following its recent Ofsted inspection in June 2015. The inspection report praised developments across the school, highlighting the progress and behaviour of pupils and their engagement in their learning as a particular strength. All aspects of the school were inspected ranging from leadership and management; behaviour and safety of pupils; quality of teaching; achievement of pupils to its Sixth Form provision and found all areas to be ‘Good’. The school has been recognised as being one of the ‘Top 100 nonselective state-funded schools in England’ in a recent letter from a letter from Nick Gibb MP – Minister of State for Schools (February 2016). The Academy is a highly successful 11-18 school with a flourishing and rapidly expanding Sixth Form. The school fosters an aspirational ethos in which every child is expected to achieve the very best they can in all that they do. Situated in a unique rural location, SWRA provides a safe and idyllic learning environment with small class sizes and superb pastoral care and support. The Academy is easily accessible from Newark, Grantham, Sleaford, Lincoln, the A46 and surrounding villages – with school buses serving each of these areas. Our pupils are well supported through an engaging and dynamic academic curriculum that is tailored to the needs of the individual. The school is well resourced, with wonderful outdoor facilities for a wide range of sporting activities. We offer a full and active programme of musical and performing arts from our purpose built studios. Come and find out how your child can ASPIRE to a brighter future by booking a personal tour on 01400 272422 or join us at our Open Mornings 9.15am-11.15am 12th – 14th September 2016 and/or our Open Evening on Wednesday 14th September. The Best GCSE Results Ever for St Peter and St Paul! We are extremely proud of all of the students who took exams this summer. Year 11 students and staff were set the challenge of achieving the best GCSE results ever at St Peter and St Paul in 2016. The hard work has paid off and this has been achieved with over 60% of students achieving 5A* - C including English and Maths and our progress measures have improved significantly on 2015. Students should rightly be over the moon with all of their achievements and they are now well prepared to move on to Level 3 courses in St Peter and St Paul 6th Form or other education, training or employment. The results are a real testament to the excellent relationships between and dedicated work of staff and students. Getting Ready for Secondary
Application & Appeals Unfortunately many parents will be disappointed by not getting their first choice of school. In some places in the UK less than 20% of families (1 in 5) get a place in the secondary school they wanted. There is an Appeals Process available to parents who wish to dispute the decision of the Admissions Authority. Details of how to appeal are normally contained within the letter parents get about placement. The very first steps parents should take before beginning the Appeals Process is to check the deadline for the appeal and to put their child’s name down on the waiting list of the school they would like to attend. There is no guarantee that a place will open up but it does happen. For more information on the appeals process: ACE Centre for Education (www.ace-ed.org.uk, 0300 0115142) The Children's Legal Centre (www.childrenslegalcentre. com, 08088 020008).

The first day of ‘big school’ is a huge milestone for parents and children alike. We dress the newly minted school children up in their uniforms (usually a bit too big), take pictures to mark the occasion and send them off to start the next phase of their life. All that seemed like it happened yesterday and yet, suddenly, they’re entering their final year of primary school. As Year 6 begins parents have to start planning ahead for the following September when their children will start secondary school. A year sounds like a long time but, as parents know all too well, the school year flies and before you know it primary school will be in your children’s past. The first thing parents need to do is have their applications for secondary school completed by 31st October. If you haven’t already thought about secondary schools now is the time. The application process is explained online at www.gov.uk. Private schools often have a different application process so it is best to check in advance. Many parents are hampered in their choice by geography (there may be only one secondary school in your area), money, or a combination of both. However if you are lucky enough to have a choice try to make it with your child’s abilities – academic, physical and social, at the forefront of your mind. It is not always easy but parents need to assess their children realistically. Much as we may want our child
Primary Times Back to School Issue
to be a particular way we cannot force them to be sporty or swotty or artistic. In fact placing undue pressure on your child to conform to a role you have assigned them, and placing them into the wrong school as a result, will probably have severe negative consequences for everybody. Once the issue of where your child is attending secondary school is resolved the best thing that parents and primary school teachers can do for Year 6 students is to take as much of the mystery out of the next stage of their education as possible. Most secondary schools have open days for prospective pupils and parents to visit. Many primary schools have an annual ‘step up’ day, towards the end of the summer term, when Year 6 can experience secondary school. It is a good idea to find out now if your primary school and prospective secondary school participate in such a program. If not, talk to your PTA and the staff about starting one as spending a day at their new school can help allay many children’s anxieties. As a student in Year 6 your child is one of the oldest in the school and probably looked up to by some of the smaller children. Next year, they will go from being the most mature students to the youngest. For many children this can be a difficult and challenging time. Not only is their immediate environment new but they also have to get to know other students and teachers – all of this combined with different expectations about their school work
can cause stress. In order to keep the transition as smooth as possible use the coming year to talk to your child as much as you can about life in secondary school and your own memories of that first day. I was utterly terrified arriving at secondary as I didn’t know a single person. I soon made friends with girls who are still my friends today. If you had a terrible time at secondary school try to keep that to yourself, for now at least, as you don’t want to add to your child’s anxiety. Keep talking to them about next September and remember don’t dismiss any worries they have no matter how trivial they may seem to you. Try to remember that what an adult may see as silly and inconsequential may not appear the same way to an 11 year old on the verge of a major milestone. Do remind your child that whilst secondary school is a huge challenge it is also a massive opportunity – new friends, new subjects, a chance to be the person they want to be rather than the bigger version of the small child who started in Reception oh so long ago (from their perspective). Above all remind them that nerves are normal and part of any new experience. Whilst you are busy preparing for the first year of secondary school don’t forget to enjoy the last year of primary (and to encourage your child to do the same). Next year they are starting over and one step closer to adulthood even though in our mind we probably still think of them as the tiny person in the too-big uniform.

Now in its sixth year, budding bakers are once again being championed to create tempting treats to sell at home, in the office or at school, in a bid to raise money for the charity. To kick start Bake it Better week (17-23 October 2016), Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity has put together a super fundraising kit, jam-packed full of bunting, cake toppers, posters, celebrity and patient recipes, baking themed games, stickers and top tips to ensure every bake sale is a sweet success. Laura Savory, Head of Community Fundraising at Great Ormond Street Children’s Charity, said: “The great thing about Bake it Better is that everyone can get involved - whether it’s at school, in the office or at home. Every bake sale, no matter how big or how small, will help us make a real difference for so many seriously ill young patients and their families from across the UK.” Money raised will help Great Ormond Street Hospital to provide worldclass care for young patients and their families. Money raised could help with the rebuilding of the hospital, supporting groundbreaking research, funding the most up-to-date equipment and providing accommodation and other support services for children and their families. For more information and to request a fundraising kit, visit www.bakeitbetter.org

Drivers please remember: STOP
for the lollipop
This September sees the launch of a brand new road safety awareness campaign from Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership (LRSP). The 'Stop for the lollipop' campaign aims to address the increasing issue of some drivers not stopping for School Crossing Patrols (or lollipops) around the county. We are seeking your support by ensuring you adhere to traffic law and stop when a School Crossing Patrol's stop sign is raised. Sadly in recent months there has been an increasing number of incidents where drivers have failed to stop for School Crossing Patrols; compromising the safety of everyone crossing the road, including young children and their parents.
ed,
Help us stop those who fail to respect the law and all those using the crossing by reporting this despicable and dangerous behaviour and making a drive-through taboo.

It’s the law! Vehicles must stop for a School Crossing Patrol. 01522 805800 Staying.alive@lincolnshire.gov.uk www.roadlincs.com @PTLincolnshire
Primary Times Lincolnshire
Road traffic law dictates that vehicles must stop when a School Crossing Patrol raises their 'Stop for children' sign. Vehicles that fail to stop are committing a road traffic offence; and in some cases, charges have been brought by Lincolnshire Police. The wording in the Highway Code in Rule 210 states that 'You must stop when a school crossing patrol shows a 'Stop for Children' sign'. As part of the campaign schools and parents in areas with a School Crossing Patrol are being reminded of their legal obligation to 'stop for the lollipop', in preparation for the new academic year. It is possible that many drivers have either become complacent or are simply unaware of their legal obligation to stop. LRSP's greatest concern is the safety for all those who use the road and not stopping when required puts everyone in danger. School Crossing Patrols must be able to carry out their work in safety, drivers not stopping jeopardises this. More sustainable and healthier options like walking or cycling to school are becoming increasingly popular, especially in areas where there is parking congestion. LRSP with parents help, strives to be able to offer Lincolnshire children a safe crossing option to and from school, without unnecessary danger. For more information on the School Crossing Patrol service contact Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership on 01522 805800.

The Great Dragon Bake Off - Nicola O’Byrne (Bloomsbury, £6.99)
Looking terryfying, Flamie Oliver was invited to join the Ferocious Dragon Academy. Unlike the other dragons who were very good at being bad, Flamie was very good at baking. This meant he was the only dragon to fail his assignments and the only way he could graduate was to kidnap and eat a princess. Not wanting to fail, he managed the first part of the task, but experienced great difficulty finding food that went with princess, as she pointed out, perhaps they aren’t mean to be eaten. See what solution they come up with in this very funny picture book with a few sentences on each page and colourful, mouth watering illustrations.

Her slightly odd appearance had already suggested as much and her unconventionality continued into her teaching. She often followed the children’s suggestions while managing to teach them a lot. They were enjoying learning without realising it and soon became very fond of her - unlike the headteacher. He was suspicious of her methods but could do nothing until a shock discovery gave him the ammunition to use against her. Read what happens in this highly entertaining story with a really endearing title character and plenty of funny moments.
