Heighington Bushido Kai Karate-Do Heighington Bushido Kai Karate-Do is Lincolnshire’s oldest traditional karate club having been founded more than 40 years ago. We teach our students not only self defence, but also respect, discipline and self-esteem and encourage our students to perform to the best of their ability. We have, in the past, been very successful on the tournament circuit including having fighters included in the England squad. We are a non-profit making organisation with all our instructors giving their time voluntarily and are all first aid trained and CRB checked. We have also over the years raised many thousands of pounds for various charities including Cancer Research UK, Lincs/Notts Air Ambulance and St. Barnabas’ Hospice to name but a few. We offer a warm and friendly welcome to all new members regardless of age or fitness level at any one of our clubs. We currently train at 5 locations around Lincoln and its surrounding villages and we are a fully endorsed member of the English Karate Federation. The benefits for young people of learning karate can be huge including: • Improving physical and mental health • Building self-esteem and strengthening self-confidence • Improving academic performance by raising your level of energy, focus and concentration • Learning and mastering self-defence techniques • Making friends in the oldest karate club in Lincolnshire • We run weekly training sessions for people aged 4 and upwards from the following locations: • Birchwood Community Centre • Sudbrooke Drive Community Centre, Ermine • Bracebridge Heath Village Hall • Branston Village Hall • Hammond Hall, Bassingham Please see our website www.hbk-karate-club.co.uk for information regarding our clubs training times and locations, fees, our instructors, special events and social activities.

At Sir Robert Pattinson Academy we believe every student is an individual and we celebrate their successes and range of talents with them. At Sir Robert Pattinson Academy we continually strive to improve and we have a clear strategic vision for the future to ensure it continues to provide a world class education for students, allowing them to develop their potential and contribute fully to the life of the community. This summer we are again proud to support the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code (OKSSC); the UK’s only free sun protection resource bank and accreditation scheme, for all those who work outdoors with kids. This year the focus is on taking action; because as we all know, despite good intentions, sun protection doesn’t work in a kit bag! The Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund; the charity behind the initiative, has launched a campaign to recruit a team of OK Champions to help spread the word on the importance of sun protection and inspire others. OK Champions will be made up of people like you; coaches, volunteers, parents, carers, teachers and young people from all sports, who are keen to help create a healthier core nation.

Why? Melanoma is one of the fastest rising cancers in the UK today and can be sparked by over exposure to the sun, in particular sunburn. All children should grow-up without the risk of developing this, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, and the best way to achieve this is to take action and help Blow the Whistle on Sunburn!

OK Support The charity will provide promotional literature, badges, promotional whistles, PR support, help and advice to all those applying to become an OK Champion. If you simply want to improve your provision of sun protection to children visit oksunsafetycode.com/ok-champions.

Camping out for nature

RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout: 29 – 31 July 2016 Grown-ups and children alike are in for a treat over the upcoming summer holidays as the RSPB will once again be urging nature lovers to spend a night under the stars for its annual Big Wild Sleepout. The charity is challenging children and their families across the UK to go on a mini-adventure, get wild and discover what goes bump in the night with the amazing nocturnal wildlife on their doorstep. For the fourth year running, happy campers across the country will be encouraged to sleep out in their own gardens or outdoor spaces to get close to nature and discover which creatures they share their homes with. Thousands will be having Sleepouts in their gardens and back yards in addition to organised events taking place at RSPB nature reserves across the country, and partner sites for those that would prefer a guided experience teeming with wildlife. Evening activities will vary for each event, but a few will include stargazing, bushcraft, fireside cooking and fun with stories round the campfire. The Big Wild Sleepout is part of the RSPB’s ‘Giving Nature a Home’ campaign, which is aimed at inspiring everyone to do their bit for nature, wherever they live and however big their outside space. Nature is in trouble and by taking part in Sleepout and sharing your experiences with the RSPB, we’re getting a deeper understanding of the wildlife around us, as well as helping to give nature a home.” Rohan, designer and supplier of outdoor clothing and footwear, has leant its support to Big Wild Sleepout for the second year running. Sign up for a Big Wild Sleepout pack and register to take part from 15 June at www.rspb.org.uk/sleepout. Participants will be invited to let the RSPB know once they’ve taken part and to share their experiences on the website and on social media using #BigWildSleepout.

Tabby fest is a wonderful event – there is all sorts of music and fun to enjoy. I have been going to Tabby Fest for about 3-4 years now but it all started a long time ago when I just watched other people play the drums and wanted to be on stage. I have been learning to play drums for around 2 years and it is really fun. Once I went to Tabby Fest on my birthday and I have got to say it was the best birthday EVER!!!!!! There is all sorts of music to enjoy. When I played at Tabby Fest I played 500 miles, you are with a real band too! There are several bouncy castles to enjoy and a sweet shop plus Moomilk shakes. There are pizza places and burger bars too. I love Tabby Fest so come and join the fun! By Eleanor Bryceland aged 11 years.

Beat boredom this summer! At Wilko, we love family time and with the summer holidays just around the corner, it’s a great time to start thinking about activities to keep the kids (and adults) busy.

Wow £12!

Thinking of things to do to keep the 6 weeks action-packed can seem a bit daunting, and not to mention costly, but we’ve got some great ideas that’ll help keep the kids entertained, making memories that’ll last a lifetime and all without breaking the bank! As well as a host of super suggestions, we’re also giving your little scribblers a chance to win a Back to School Bumper Pack, which contains all the essentials, worth £50. You can find out more by visiting www.wilko.com/page/colourcomp – so what are you waiting for? Dig out the colouring pencils and get them to give it a go!

Start with a holiday planner Making a plan for each week is a great starting point. It’ll help keep you organised, space out activities and give everyone in the family things to look forward to. It’s also handy when you’re working to a budget and making arrangements for any childcare that’s needed – or roping in the grandparents! When planning, try and schedule in craft days, mini sports days or themed activity days throughout the holidays, leaving little to no room for the word ‘bored’ to make an appearance!

Be prepared – whatever the weather! We all know that the British weather’s unpredictable, raining cats and dogs one minute with glorious sunshine the next! So make sure you’ve got a few things up your sleeve – at your local Wilko you’ll find plenty of activities that can be enjoyed come rain or shine. Crafts – Crafting indoors and outdoors can be great fun, and craft kits are perfect for keeping kids busy. Visit wilko.com where we’ve got heaps to choose from, all at fantastic prices. Our favourite summer holiday heroes include the bumper craft kit which contains a whopping 700 pieces for just £5 – why not use it to create colourful creatures, cool cards and

24

fantastic photo frames? Our scrapbooks are also great for keeping little ones entertained all summer long. Encourage them to stick in bits and bobs from their summer adventures – think family pics, tickets from days out and dried flowers from the garden. Painting – Kids love getting messy and painting is a great activity for encouraging kids to get creative. Use our colourful child-friendly paints to make hand prints, foot prints, beautiful portraits and more! You could even roll out a length of lining paper and get the whole family to run along it with painted feet... you may not make a masterpiece, but it’ll be a priceless family keepsake and a whole load of fun!

Be a good sport It’s set to be a summer of sport with Euro 2016 in France and the Olympic Games in Rio, which may inspire your little ones to kick a ball about, run around the garden or throw a javelin... ok, maybe not the last one! Little ones love an assault course, and they’re super easy to set up. You’ll just need a bit of equipment like a hoop to climb through, a ball to kick or throw into a goal and somewhere to run. It’s a great way to get the kids to use their imagination and burn off a bit of energy. Check out your local store or visit us online at wilko.com where you’ll find a huge range of outdoor equipment – everything from trampolines to tennis sets, pools to playhouses!

Little hands, green fingers... There are bound to be some warm, dry days, so why not get the kids to help out in the garden? Gardening’s a great activity for all ages – if you can spare the space, dedicate a small patch that’s just for the kids, and get them started with our great range of compost, seeds and tools.

Pass the summer holiday test with flying colours! Research shows that even a bit of learning during the summer can help kids get ahead, no matter what their age. And to give you a helping hand, we’ve got a great range of exercise and activity books, covering everything from basic phonics to Key Stage 2 English, Science and Maths. After all that learning, why not relax with a bit of colouring? It’s a fantastically calming activity that also encourages creativity, which is crucial to your little one’s development – and it’s also great for helping adults to de-stress! So, pop into your local store where you’ll find a fantastic range of colouring books, activity books and stationery. For more ideas to keep the kids busy this summer check out our blog – life. wilko.com. And when it’s time to go back to school, visit your local Wilko store or wilko.com for all your stationery essentials.

Check out the Wilko Small Sketchers Colouring Competition for your child’s chance to win a Back to School Bumper Pack, worth £50. Visit www.wilko.com/ page/colourcomp for more information.

Get set for the

Olympics It really is hard to believe that it’s four years since the Queen and James Bond parachuted into history during the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. (Yes, we know it wasn’t really the Queen and that James Bond is an actor called Daniel Craig!). This year the Olympic torch passes to Brazil where the Games of the XXXI Olympiad (commonly known as Rio 2016) will take place in Rio de Janeiro. For many athletes this is the goal they have been training for, not only for the past four years, but in some cases, most of their lives. The 2016 Summer Olympic program features 28 sports, 41 disciplines and 306 events. The games organizers expect to host over 10,500 athletes from 206 countries. British athletes have competed at every single Olympic games since they were revived by Baron Pierre du Coubertin in 1896. Coubertin drew his inspiration from the Ancient Olympic games which took place every four years from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. The origins of these games are shrouded in mystery and many theories have been given for their existence. Scholars can’t even pinpoint exactly when they began but 776 BC is the most widely accepted date. (Similarly, there is no agreement about when these ancient Games stopped – the date that is most agreed on is 393 AD).

same year as the Summer Games but since then they now take place on a four-year cycle two years after the Summer Games. The genesis of the Paralympics came in 1948 when Sir Ludwig Guttman, in an effort to promote rehabilitation of soldiers wounded in World War II, organized a multi-sport event to coincide with the London Summer Games of that year. This event became known as the International Wheelchair Games. In 1960 Guttman brought 400 athletes to compete in ‘Parallel Olympics’ alongside the Summer Olympics in Rome - an event that ultimately ILJHTL [OL Ă„YZ[ 7HYHS`TWPJZ :PUJL [OLU [OL Paralympics has been held every four years alongside the Summer Games and, since 1988, in the same host city. The Youth Games began in 2010 to accommodate athletes aged 14-18. This year, the torch began its journey in April when it was lit at a ceremony in Southern Greece and spent a week travelling the country to Athens. It arrives in Brazil on 3rd May and will then embark on a 95-day tour of Brazil, visiting 83 cities, 26 state capitals and 500 towns. It is estimated that the torch will reach 90% of the population while covering approximate 20,000 kilometres (over 12,000 miles) of the country by road and 16,000 (approximately 9,940 miles) by air. The torch relay will involve around 12,000 torchbearers and will end at the Maracanä Stadium in Rio on 5th August for the Games Opening Ceremony. Many British athletes have taken home medals since the Games began. Cyclist Chris Hoy has won the most gold medals for Britain with 6, he also took home a silver. STAR READ

Uncle Gobb and the Dread S Shed - Michael Rosen (Bloomsbury, £5.99)

If you are looking for a sensible read — try another book! This is totally bonkers! It’s full of brilliant word play that will have you laughing aloud until everything aches.Things took a strange turn in Malcolm’s life when his Uncle Gobb came to live with them after his house blew up. He was very keen on homework, not only for Malcolm but everyone and everything. Life at school seemed to be full of worksheets with missing words to fill in which didn’t give Malcolm enough scope to put in all his ideas. One day he noticed they had Gobb Education written on them and decided to find out if it had anything to do with his uncle — with the help of a genie (of course!). What he discovers is quite shocking (as if finding a genie hadn’t been shocking enough) and results in a showdown (with another genie). Can roundabouty thinking win the day? The answer is in this book, somewhere amongst the madness. Beware, it’s going to be a series. If you’re lucky you may have recovered before the next instalment!

S Rome AD94 and the evil Emperor Domitian sends soldiers to seize Juba’s family home. His parents stall them while Juba and his brother and sisters escape to their uncle in Britannia. But just getting out of Rome is fraught with danger and hindered by his baby sister and brother who finds it hard to deal with change. Robbed of their possessions and hounded by the Emperor’s men they have a constant struggle to survive, especially on a very tough sea crossing. They then have to face the barbarians in Britannia and try to find safety with their uncle. This is a very atmospheric, exciting story full of historical detail and surprises. First in a new series ‘The Roman Quests’. Medium length novel with fair size print.

Escape From Rome - Caroline Lawrence (Orion, £6.99)

County set for its biggest Heritage Open Days Festival! After a successful 23 years, Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days Festival 2016 is set to wow visitors with more than 180 free events across the county this autumn. Heritage Lincolnshire, a local charity based in Heckington, is co-ordinating the festival for the 23rd year and expects to attract thousands of visitors to over 180 heritage sites, talks and walks around the county. Events are predominantly organised and managed by volunteers who do a fantastic job bringing Lincolnshire’s history to life. This year’s Heritage Open Days will encompass heritage sites, buildings, towns and villages and for the first time all five National Trust properties will be open on at least one of the days, helping to make this the biggest and best festival yet Each year the county’s Heritage Open Days have a different theme with many of this year’s events covering ‘Natural Lincolnshire’. Events on offer range from tours of haunted Old King’s Head in Kirton and a new Heritage Music Microfestival to a rare opening of Dowsby Hall and Gardens. There will be lots of guided walks and talks to choose from such as the International Bomber Command Spire Memorial, ‘Lincolnshire’s Lost River’, Willow Tree Fen Bat Walk, plus a rare guided tour of Torksey Castle. Booking-only favourites such as tours of Harlaxton Manor are also back so book early! Children’s activities will be on offer at Temple Bruer Knights Templar Tower, many Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust reserves, Gainsborough Old Hall and many more venues. Beverley Gormley, Heritage Lincolnshire’s Cultural Events Officer said “Year after year, Lincolnshire’s Heritage Open Days prove a real winner with local people and visitors as they provide free, unique opportunities to go behind the scenes of heritage venues and discover the region’s hidden histories. The events are a wonderful way of bringing people together to learn about their local history, enabling our local heritage venues, nature reserves, organisations, towns and villages to develop a lasting relationship with people in the area. The Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days brochure is being launched at the Lincolnshire Show, so come along and pick up your free copy from Heritage Lincolnshire’s stand in the Countryside Ring.” For more information visit www.heritagelincolnshire.org from 22nd June or email htladmin@heritagelincolnshire.org

Storm Walker - Mike Revell (Quercus, £6.99) A year after his mother’s death, Owen is still hurting but is more worried about his father who isn’t coping at all. He is delighted when his father cheers up after counseling and starts writing again. But then something really strange happens, Owen wakes up with a new face and name in a terrifying world under threat from a devastating storm called the Darkness. The people there know him as Jack and slowly he is able to access some of Jack’s far from happy memories. Much relieved when he returns to his normal self in the real world, Owen starts to work out what he thinks is happening and realises his father’s recovery depends on his returning to fight the Darkness. This is a very unusual story full of suspense and shocking moments that will keep you guessing to the end. Full length novel for capable, older readers.

You Must Bring a Hat - Simon Phillip/ Kate Hindley (Simon and Schuster, £6.99)

You would think it is easy to go to a party where the only rule is you have to take a hat.Yes, unless you don’t own a hat and the shop’s sold out of them. Still, if you can take a monkey wearing a hat you’d be OK surely? Not if the hat wearing monkey needs a monocle. The rules of entry keep ridiculously expanding until the poor boy trying to get in is ready to explode, leading to an hilarious ending which made me laugh out loud. This is a nutty story made even more enjoyable by vividly expressive illustrations. With a few sentences on each page it’s perfect for new readers, but fun for all ages and abilities.
