St Hugh's students and staff have started the new academic year in a positive way. Lessons have benefitted from a more structured approach to learning, which will support the improvement in academic results over time. We are delighted to share that our lead teacher in maths is a nationally recognised educational author, who is encouraging other staff to share their excellent resources with a wider field. Quality training is provided for all our staff and they are very keen for all our students to succeed. Students are beginning to explore the benefits of using iPads in all their subjects, and we are seeing some excellent results in geography, French, Spanish and art‌ They are able to share their learning with home, as parents and carers can have access to the learning apps. In this way, everyone can be part of the secondary education experience. The clubs which are on offer for sport are many and varied, and we have many strong partnerships: Inspire+, Kesteven Rugby Club, Grantham Tennis Centre, Cliffdale Chandlers Table Tennis Club, Positive Futures, and Canoville Coaching. Taking part in fitness and engaging in team activities are widely encouraged. Our academic teams are also important and this year has seen the introduction of the House system. All staff and students are part of the House system which fosters a team spirit and embodies our values: creativity, responsibility and wisdom. After all, if we can help students to be more creative, responsible, and wise, we shall be preparing them well for the future. The URS Music Centre is all set for your Christmas and a musical new year
Budding musicians who think they could be the next superstar should consider the URS music centre for their training. The URS music centre is open to all ages offering lessons in drums, guitar, singing, piano and bass guitar as well as studio recording, and band mentoring. The centre covers all genres of music from indie and rock to pop, metal, RnB, classical and more giving potential chart-topping stars the chance to experience life as a professional musician. URS tutors offer support for pupils from the very first time they pluck a guitar string to the first time they walk on stage for a gig with their band and beyond. URS students become highly motivated and gain a life-long love of music. Founder, David Truelove says, "We aim to provide a unique musical environment where students can learn the kind of music they love whilst still gaining all the correct technique and understanding you would expect. We enjoy linking closely with local schools who are very supportive." The URS music centre is open every evening as well as Saturday and Sunday. To secure a place on the New Year/Christmas intake be sure to mention Primary Times when you call or text 07597093884 or email davidtruelove@fsmail.net

Time to get gardens ready as countdown begins to the 2017 Big Garden Birdwatch The Big Garden Birdwatch weekend may be at the end of January, but you don’t have to wait until then to start making wildlife welcome in your garden. The more you do now to help birds, hedgehogs and other wildlife through the cold winter months, the more wildlife you will have making a home in your garden. “There are so many simple things we can all do to make our gardens a bit more welcoming for wildlife,” says Rupert Masefield. “In the winter, making sure there is food and shelter for wildlife in your garden can really make a difference. Leaving leaves on the ground, creating log piles for hedgehogs to hide in, and have boxes for roosting birds and bats will all be appreciated by the wildlife that lives in your garden – and let’s not forget feeding the birds!” To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2017, watch the birds in your garden (or local park, or at the office!) for one hour over the weekend. Only count the birds that land in your garden, not those flying over. Tell us the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not the total you see in the hour. For your free Big Garden Birdwatch pack, text BIRD to 70030 or visit rspb.org.uk/birdwatch Share your photos with us on Twitter @RSPBintheEast using#BigGardenBirdwatch
