CHAPTER 1 Gesture
Territory and Boundary created by gestures
5
In nonverbal communication, gestures are body movements including eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, and posture. Body movement usually used to replace a word or phrase, for example, nodding to say yes; to illustrate or explain something; showing feelings, for example hitting the table to show anger; to regulate or control the course of a conversation; or to release tension.

CHAPTER 2 Presedence Study
House and Restaurant Cave-like Restaurant by Junya Ishigami
19
In 2013 a chef asked a Japanese architect, Junya Ishigami, to design a restaurant as well as a house in Yamaguchi, Japan. The chef asks Junya to design a building that looks like a cave, and Junya wants to create a primitive impression in this building. The process of designing this building takes up to 7 years, and will be completed by the end of 2019.

CHAPTER 3 Hygroscopy Space
Study about hygroscopic by using prototype models
41
Hygroscopic is an ability of some materials to tranform it’s shape when the humidity is increasing, and will back to the normal shape when it’s dry.
42
One of the materials that have hygroscopic ability is wood. Then

the function and mobility of the inner room.

The ability to return to shape when it dries will be decrease by the time.

facade.
Leaf shape allows shape changes to occur easier and return to its original form faster.
53
Prototype C
54
It’s took 10 minutes to completely changes, and return to the original shape in 35 minutes
+ Quite
extensive
changes
- The sideways wood position makes it
difficult to receive water from above, so the direction of incoming water needs to be adjusted to the desired direction of movement.
The arrangement of the wood which is sideways makes it difficult to be able to directing the movement of wood according to which movement is desirable.
55
Prototype D
56
It’s took 15 minutes to completely changes, and return to the original shape in 25 minutes
+ The changes of wood can move a space. - The weight that is able to be driven
by
the
wood
is
limited.
The changes are not only on the facade, however it also able to move a space, but with burden that needs to be calculated.
57
Prototype E
58
It’s took 15 minutes to completely changes, and return to the original shape in 30 minutes.
+ The wood which is diagonally positioned able to move according to the desired movement. So the movement will be more organized.
- Requires
a large enough space between woods, so the woods does not inhibit the movement of one another.
The woods which is arranged diagonally is more optimal for receive water from above and achieve that change desirable because it is able to move regularly.

Maket Detail

74

“whatever good things we build end up building us.”
"Living with New Territory and Boundary" is a required theme in the 1st Semester of the second year studio among 2018 students at Pelita Harapan University. Students were tasked to explore and analyze about territory and boundary. The goal was approach of each student. Each student has their own approach, therefore the produced works vary even though they start from the same theme. There will be 10 student portfolios that will be published with the theme "Living with New Territory and Boundaries", each with unique approach and outcome.
