REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGE

The Benefits Are Plain To See

PORTER OPHTHALMOLOGY: THE CLEAR CHOICE FOR RLE SURGERY Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is an advanced surgical procedure that can restore your vision over the long term—often allowing patients to see clearly without glasses or contact lenses. At Porter Ophthalmology, our experienced surgical team has an unparalleled history of helping adults (typically age 45 or older) with vision disorders through corrective RLE surgery.

Are you ready to reclaim your vision?

WHAT IS RLE? Refractive Lens Exchange is an advanced vision correction surgery for adults suffering from age-related focus dysfunction, but who are not good candidates for other corrective procedures, such as LASIK, PRK, or ICL surgery. Unlike LASIK, which involves reshaping the cornea, RLE replaces the eye’s natural lens with a new intraocular lens (IOL). It is a proven, timetested procedure that in the vast majority of individuals provides long term vision correction. Best of all, it is a quick and safe procedure, similar to cataract surgery, and has a fast recovery period.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF RLE? The life-changing benefits of RLE are many. This transformative procedure has enabled thousands of mature adults to enjoy a whole new outlook. • • • •

Long term vision correction Reduces the need for corrective eyewear Quick procedure—less than 30 minutes per eye Designed for age-related focus dysfunction (presbyopia), nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism • Relatively pain-free procedure • No need for future cataract surgery • Stability over time • Relatively quick recovery—between 1-3 days typically • It is a safe procedure (similar to cataract surgery)

LENS (IOL) OPTIONS TO FIT YOUR EYES RLE lenses come in three types. We will conduct a thorough eye exam and determine which IOL is right for you based on your vision needs. Standard Lens Designed to correct nearsightedness or farsightedness, Standard lenses greatly improve your choice of distance, intermediate, or near vision. You may still need to wear glasses with this type of IOL. For instance, glasses will be needed for sharper near vision if you aim for distance vision. Toric Lens Toric lenses are designed for patients with moderate or high levels of astigmatism. They also correct nearsightedness and farsightedness. The patient must choose if this lens will provide distance, intermediate, or near vision. Extended Range Lens Multifocal and Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lenses are designed to deliver clear vision at a range of distances, including far, intermediate, and near. These IOLs may not be an option for some individuals, and they do require a period of adjustment for the patient.

We will help you determine what the best option is for your eyes so that your vision will be effective and comfortable.

ARE YOU A PORTER OPHTHALMOLOGY RLE CANDIDATE? If you are a mature adult— generally speaking 45 years of age and older— who suffers from nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, dysfunctional lens syndrome, or similar vision disorders, RLE could be the best option for you. It may even allow you to eliminate the need for prescription lenses.
