In the early 1800’s, on the Links of Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland — considered by many to be the birthplace of golf — members of the Thistle Golf Club stood out among the various clubs of the time. This unique group of Scots became known for the respectful way in which they conducted their activities both on and off the course. In 1824, these very members published The Rules of the Thistle Golf Club. This landmark book documented the official rules of play and conduct, and set the framework for the first tournaments to use the handicap system — forever changing the sport. Today, as an established coastal Carolina community, Thistle honors the legendary Thistle Golf Club of Scotland. Here golfers and visitors alike will see that this rich, uniquely Scottish heritage is evident in Tim Cate’s links-style golf course. This legacy continues throughout the architecture of the Thistle community, its homes and its Clubhouse. There is a distinct Old World European charm here, unlike anywhere else in the coastal Carolinas.
